Opis:
Lagoon gyttja layers occurring in anomalously high position (up to 2.5 m above the present-day sea level) The transition phase between the Ancylus and Littorina stages of the Baltic Sea is an old controversial topic. With the newest data available we try to reach a compromise between the "dramatic" model, including a sudden and large drainage of the Ancylus Lake, and the idea of a non-existing Ancylus drainage through Denmark. This new model includes a minor, perhaps 5 m, sudden erosion and forced regression slightly before 10,000 cal. yrs BP. This was followed by a 200–300 yr long period when the outlet through Denmark and Great Belt (Dana River) was characterized by a variable fluvial environment creating fluvial, levée and lacustrine deposits. During this period of rapidly rising sea level, we postulate that the gradient between the Ancylus Lake and sea level gradually decreased from some 5 m until sea level had reached the Ancylus and Darss Sill level. After this point in time occasional pulses of marine water could easier enter into the Baltic basin, which is seen as brackish pulses as early as 9800 cal. yrs BP in records from the Bornholm and Gotland basins, but also from Blekinge. It would, however, take another c. 1500 years before the Öresund threshold was flooded by the rising sea level, causing a significant rise in salinity sometime between 8500–8000 cal. yrs BP, and marking the true onset of the Littorina Sea.

Opis:
The waters of the Celebes Sea are an area that has quite complex dynamics because it is influenced by several factors, either regionally or globally. This influence certainly has an impact on variations in oceanographic conditions in waters such as Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and sea currents. Currently, there are many observations of oceanographic data, one of which is by using remote sensing methods. The purpose of this study was to determine the seasonal variations in sea surface temperature and sea surface currents in the Celebes Sea using a remote sensing system in a time series for 5 years (2014-2018). The results of this study indicate data on seasonal variation of SST and sea surface currents have an average maximum SST value for 5 years occurring in the eastern season and the second transitional season (May, June, July) with an average value range of 30.6 °C - 31.1 °C and the average maximum sea current velocity for 5 years occurs in the western monsoon with a value range of 0.72 m/s - 0.77 m/s. The high SST value and sea current velocity are caused by the influence of the season which causes variations in the ongoing rainfall, also presumably due to the opposite direction between the monsoon wind and the direction of the main current flowing in the Celebes Sea.

This paper describes the application of methodology based on the artificial neural network technique to make short-term wave forecasts. The neural network model is used to predict significant wave height at a selected location on the Baltic Sea based on wave and/or wind data at ten points scattered on the sea. High quality hindcast data were used in the process of developing the forecast methodology. The data originated from the WAM4 wave model. The results show that the neural network technique allowed significant wave height to be predicted accurately. The agreement obtained by a comparison with a testing data set was sufficiently good to confirm the effectiveness of this approach.

Opis:
Salt is obtained in various regions of the world and using differing technologies. The origin of the salt and its production methods influence its composition, properties and application possibilities. In recent years, sea salt has attracted a lot of interest, as it is commonly believed that it is richer in minerals than pure evaporated salt. One of the oldest methods of extracting edible salt in the world is the evaporation of seawater. Salinas are found in coastal zones of seas and oceans around the world. The salt obtained in the salin is transported to its destination by various means of transport, including sea transport. Taking into account the classification of sea cargo, salt is classified as solid mass cargo, and due to the physicochemical properties of salt, the transport of this product by sea requires security. The aim of this study was to present selected quality parameters of sea salt that are important in its transport and storage. Parameters relevant from the point of view of transport, storage, technology and processing, which are important in shaping the quality of sea salts were compared in salts obtained in various European salinas vs. Himalayan salt. These parameters included water activity, degree of granulation and discharge angle and embankment angle. The paper also presents the characteristics of sea salts from microscopic analysis and an assessment of the correct labeling of the product, which is important for the consumer of the packaged product. In land transport, not only sea salt is transported in bulk, but also the product in commercial packaging, most often weighing 1 kg.

This article presents the results of diatom studies from three cores taken from the Arkona Basin. The main stages of the Baltic Sea evolution in the Holocene – Ancylus Lake, Mastogloia Sea, Littorina Sea, and Post-Littorina Sea – were identified in diatom assemblages. The transition stage between Ancylus Lake and Littorina Sea, called Mastogloia Sea, was not such a long period as in the Mecklenburg Bay but was essential in the evolution of the Baltic Sea. The most pronounced feature of this period was an increase in the number of halophilous species, which reflected the existence of the littoral environment at the onset of this stage. The appearance and development of halophilous species was stimulated by stepwise inflows of saline waters. The composition of diatom assemblages reflected natural eutrophication of the Baltic Sea during the Littorina Sea stage.

Opis:
This study aims to describe and reveal ocean system dynamics in Sulu and its surrounding seas. Data were used based on historical in-situ datasets which involve their physical characteristics with temperature and salinity data downloaded from the World Ocean Database (WOD). Sea surface temperature, sea surface salinity, seasonal T-S plots, and caballing coefficient were used to distinguish water-mass types. At the same time, water column stability was analyzed based on the Brunt-Vaisala Frequency (N2). The results revealed that the three areas were influenced by a seasonal variation. The Sulu Sea affected by the SCS and the Pacific Ocean, including local waters from the Philippines. The SCS waters have lower SST (28 °C) and salinity (33.4 psu) compared to other regions. During the South-East Monsoon, the thermocline layer is thicker compared to the North-West Monsoon in the Celebes Sea. Similarly, in the same area, there is a layer that is thicker than the others. There are at least five main water masses in these waters that originate from the SCS and the Pacific Ocean. There are five water-mass types found in the three regions. The most stable area is SCS with a buoyancy value of around 12 cycl/h in a 100-meter depth, and the buoyancy during SEM is more stable than NWM. Finally, WOD updated 2018 is valuable to analyze water mass dynamics, especially using temperature and salinity.

Opis:
The aim of the paper is to review the ancient sources devoted to the sea monster called κάμπη (f. ā-stem). Some researchers believe that it is also attested as κάμπος (n. es-stem). The zoonym in question, so named by the reason of a similarity of the marine animal to a caterpillar, evidently derives from the verb κάμπτω ‘to bend, curve’. The dramatist and philosopher Epicharmus of Kos (ca. 530–440 BC) was probably the first Greek writer who mentioned the sea monster κάμπη. Such a supposition is confirmed by the gloss κάμπη· κῆτος παρὰ Ἐπιχάρμῳ, registered in Hesychius’ lexicon (5th–6th c. AD). According to most modern lexicographers, the alternative form κάμπος n. ‘a sea monster’ is attested in one literary work in the form of the genitive plural καμπέων (Lyc., Alex. 414). The author intends to verify whether the alleged variant κάμπος (n. es-stem) is an authentic lexical item or a doubtful guess.

The main findings of studies of the physical oceanography of the Gulf of Finland (GoF) during 1997–2007 are reviewed. The aim is to discuss relevant updates published in international peer-reviewed research papers and monographs, bearing in mind that a comprehensive overview of the studies up to the mid-1990s is available (Alenius et al. 1998). We start the discussion with updates on the basic hydrographical and stratification conditions, and progress in the understanding of atmospheric forcing and air-sea interaction. Advances in the knowledge of basinscale and mesoscale dynamics are summarised next. Progress in circulation and water exchange dynamics has been achieved mostly by means of numerical studies. While the basic properties of circulation patterns in the gulf have been known for a century, new characteristics and tools such as water age, renewal index, and high-resolution simulations have substantially enriched our knowledge of processes in the Gulf of Finland during the last decade. We present the first overview of both status and advances in optical studies in this area. Awareness in this discipline has been significantly improved as a result of in situ measurements. Our understanding of the short- and long-term behaviour of the sea level as well as knowledge of the properties of both naturally and anthropogenically induced surface waves have expanded considerably during these ten years. Developments in understanding the ice conditions of the Gulf of Finland complete the overview, together with a short discussion of the gulf’s future, including the response to climate change. Suggestions for future work are outlined.

In this work long-term probability of occurrence of maximum sea levels in some points of Polish Baltic Sea coast, was determined. Use was made of multi-year series of measurement data on maximum yearly sea levels, and their probability distributions were determined. To the analysis Gumbel’s distribution and Pearson distribution of 3rd type as well as quantile methods and the highest credibility method, were applied. Kolmogorov test was used to examine conformity of the theoretical distributions with real random variable distribution. As results from the analysis, the highest sea levels of 1000- year return period can be expected in Polish ports of the west part of the coast , i.e. Kolobrzeg (750, 2 cm , i.e. 2,5 m above the average sea level) and Swinoujscie (723,6 cm) . Lower sea levels of the same return period can be expected in Ustka (720,2 cm), Wladyslawowo (709,7 cm) and Gdansk (716, 7 cm), respectively.
