    The aim of the paper is to present the history of the Moscow Linguistic Circle whose membershave laid the foundations for themodern, linguistic-oriented literary theory since 1915. The goal of the thesis is to follow the process of establishing the literary theory as an autonomous scientific discipline with its specific research subject, appropriate tools, and terminology. The case of the Circle illustrates that the scientific intuitions of young scholars from Moscow were often ahead of many trends in the twentieth century humanities (e.g. structuralism, statistical poetics, urban studies, sociolinguistics). For this reason the discussion on the intellectual heritage of the Moscow Linguistic Circle is also the reinterpretation of the history of the modern literary theory – necessary in the light of the available, yet poorly recognized archival documents.

    The paper The Fictions of Literary Criticism refers to a polemic between Manfred Kridl and Waclaw Borowy which was conducted in several articles published in the years 1936–1957. The polemic played a significant role in the development of modern Polish literary criticism. The matter of dispute was a new method of literary criticism announced by Kridl in his renowned Introduction to the Research of Literary Work (1936). The main topics of the discussion were the problems of the literary process, the evaluation of a literary work and the uses of scientific methods in humanities. The paper’s author pays attention especially to the rhetorical and literary means of argumentation which were used in the creation of this unusual form of non-fiction.

    This paper focuses on reconstructing the history of the so-called Russian Formalism and the avantgarde context of OPOYAZ’s inception in Petersburg in 1914. Victor Shklovsky’s lecture-manifesto titled “The resurrection of the word”, which he presented in the café “Brodyacha Sobaka” (“The Stray Dog”) in Petersburg, marked the symbolic beginning of this movement. The anniversary of the foundation of the Russian Formal School as well as the international congress commemorating this anniversary, which was organized in Moscow in 2013 (titled “The 100th Anniversary of Russian Formalism: 1913–2013”) provide a starting point for discussing the legacy and topicality of the Russian Formalism in contemporary literary studies.

    Niniejszy esej traktuje o rosyjskiej teorii formalistycznej z perspektywy humanistyki cyfrowej. Skupia się na podejściu do poetyki kwantytatywnej kilku członków Moskiewskiego Koła Lingwistycznego: Borisa Tomaszewskiego, Romana Jakobsona, a zwłaszcza Borisa Jarcho. Szczególny nacisk położony jest na opracowanej przez Jarcho metodzie, którą później Franco Moretti nazwał „czytaniem na dystans” – porównywaniu dużej liczby tekstów pod względem ograniczonej liczby cech formalnych.
    This essay approaches Russian Formalist theory from the perspective of the digital humanities. It focuses on the approaches to quantitative poetics made by several members of the Moscow Linguistic Circle: Boris Tomashevsky, Roman Jakobson, and particularly Boris Yarkho. A special emphasis is made on Yarkho’s invention of what Franco Moretti later referred to as “distant reading” – a comparison of a large number of texts by a limited number of formal features.

    The paper analyzes the elements and strategies of Russian formalism applied to the Russian avantgarde zaum poetic experiment of Alexei Kruchenykh and Viktor Khlebnikov. In futuristic tendencies to create a trans-rational language or zaum language lies the idea of a new voice, sounds and semantic meaning. According to Russian poets the new semantic meaning of the word is obtained only in the process of performing a poem. Also, according to Russian formalism, sound of poem, in the performing process, has its own independent meaning. In this sense zaum experiment in its printed form does not possess a fixed resolution of meanings, but only has potential of meanings. The function of fixed forms, that during the process of performing is to form a new movable semantic meaning.

    The article focuses on Russian constitutional ideology with overview of its historical preconditions and analysis of recent significant cases of the Russian Constitutional Court. There is a discussion of gay activist Alekseyev’s case and “foreign agents’ law” case in constitutional practice as most significant examples of positivistic way of legal reasoning. The paper argues that legal positivism through its form – legal formalism is the main ideology in the modern constitutional practice in Russia. This ideology is based on the assumption that constitutional justice can find social truth. German positivistic and Soviet Marxist views have strongly determined the modern Russian constitutional discourse.

    The article investigates references to Shakespeare in the works of Viktor Shklovsky, an outstanding representative of the Russian formalism. The author of the paper analyses literary studies by Shklovsky in which Shakespeare’s texts are interpreted. In his early works (dating to the 1920s–1930s) Shklovsky referred to Shakespeare to justify the new terminology of the Russian formalism, while his later works were devoted to the study of Shakespeare’s texts.
    В статье рассмотрен шекспировский дискурс в работах видного представителя русского формализма Виктора Шкловского. Автор анализирует литературоведческие работы Шкловского, в которых интерпретируются тексты Шекспира. В ранних работах 1920–30-х годов В. Шкловский обращался к Шекспиру для обоснования новой терминологии русских формалистов, а более поздние работы ученого уже непосредственно посвящены изучению произведений Шекспира.
