Opis:
The paper deals with the reception of the Russian character (mind and soul) by two prominent anglophone writers: Virginia Woolf and John Steinbeck. Virginia Woolf recognizes the Russians and their soul through the perception of the great Russian masterpieces of Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, and Chekhov (The Russian Point of View, essay, 1925); Steinbeck’s A Russian Journal, 1948, presents the Russians as they were observed by the American author in their everyday life, rebuilding their country after WWII. The genre specificity of each work, the differences of time, emotions and purpose of writing, the Russian “experience” of each author, determine a certain heterogeneity of understanding of Russia and Russians; nevertheless, both form a heterogeneous whole of the Anglophone perception.

Opis:
The present article regards the specificity of the realization of the Polish theme in N. Leskov’s prose. This element of the Russian writer’s artistic world is represented in his writing of the 1860s-1880s. N. Leskov had a personal experience of Poland which he visited at the beginning of the 1860s. Most vividly Polish thematics is represented in the novel Nowhere (1864), as well as in the stories and articles of his last years: Russian Democrat in Poland (1880), Interesting Men (1885), etc.The realization of the Polish motif in N. Leskov’s prose is, on the one hand, traditional for Russian literature, depicting international phenomena and topos of different cultures as „other” which are seldom perceived as foreign and hostile. The individuality of N. Leskov is manifested in the fact that his version of depicting Poland and Polish is opposed to the official state imperial position according to which Poland was regarded as a permanent source of danger. This stereotype is destroyed in N. Leskov’s prose.

The natural resource sector has become a dominant part of the Russian economy and thus affected the political developments of the state greatly. Understanding of the interplay of Russian politics and economics after the fall of the Soviet Union is integral for understanding why Russia has developed steadily into a more autocratic direction during the past few decades. The phenomenon through which we will be analyzing the intertwining of political and economic spheres of Russia is the natural resource curse concept. We seek to understand what factors have contributed to Russia’s failure to avoid the natural resource curse and give examples on how the natural resource curse manifests itself especially in today’s Russia political reality. Does the abundance of natural resources contribute to the emergence of a hyper-presidential, autocratic regime in Russia?

The authors reflect on the specificity of the filmmakers’ critical attitude towards the previous system. The story of the break-up of the Soviet Union turns to be a story of the great catastrophe – the tragedy of the whole society, abandoned by hypocritical intelligentsia and deceived by political elites. Rosyjskie kino rozpaduTekst podejmuje problematykę rosyjskiego kina rozliczeniowego po 1989 roku – słabo widocznego nurtu próbującego stworzyć zręby nowej narracji o Związku Radzieckim, która mogłaby stanowić alternatywę wobec narracji dominującej. Their interests were often focus on romantic poetry (A. Mickiewicz, J. Słowacki, Z. Krasiński and their poems written during the emigration). The main reason of this particular interests was the resemblance of Polish and Russian emigrants fate.

Thanks to the applied method, the following thesis concerning the poet’s idiolect were formulated: 1) Boris Poplavsky’s poetic world is of a definitely substantive structure; 2) the most important role in the specification of the presented world is played by senses - visual impressions and colours; 3) the lyrical subject acts mainly as a reporter of current events; 4) the used adverbs reveal the poet’s inclination to “stretching” time and space; 5) high frequency of the “I” pronoun testifies significant egocentrism of Poplavsky’s. *

Through the content of the social and literary activity of Ismail Bey Gasprinskii, I intend to deepen the point of view of the Crimean Tatar enlightener on the importance of the language of instruction in the inorodcy’s (aliens) school, a tool necessary to counteract cultural and political isolation of Russian Muslims, to encourage the sblizhenie (rapprochement) between the Russians and Tatars. The socio-political implications of the linguistic question allow us to go beyond its borders, to reflect on the vopros ob inorodcach (question about aliens) and the current samobytnos (self-being) in connection with the issue of identities in multicultural Russia.

In 1921-1923 Berlin was a centre of Russian emigration. Many poets and writers from Russia, like Maksim Gorki, Aleksy Remizow, Andriej Bieły, Ilja Erenburg, Aleksy Tołstoj, Władysław Chodasiewicz, Borys Pasternak, and for a short time also Marina Cwietajewa and Siergiej Jesienin, connected their life with this city. It was just in Berlin where was working one of the most interesting and the most intriguing writer of XX century (1922-1937) - Vladimir Nabokov. These period was characterized for him not only by happy moments (first love, marriage, birth of son), but also by tragic ones (death offather). His stay in Berlin marked out really important stage in creativity of Nabokov. It was theplace of his debut in the pages of Berlin’s newspaper “Руль” in 1921, in which he published his first poems under the pseudonym Sirin. In Berlin Nabokov wrote his first story and first novel. Itwas where he achieved his fame and formed his unique style of writing. Nabokov’s emigrant prose from 20’s constitutes an extraordinary guidebook to Berlin. In his art pieces he recreated the topography of Berlin by using architectural codes. Most often he related the code of home to a closed, domestic and peaceful circle. It is a circle tight in the meaning of space, but profound in the meaning of sensations. The lack of real home was a reason to lookingfor surrogate and it effected disorientation in the world in which poet had no place. The city hasa role of open, then foreign and hostile space. Here for the most part we can see the code in the shape of street or houses in city. This kind of code used by Nabokov, but also by other emigrantpoets, creates a feeling of disharmony, artificiality and unnaturalness.

The poet’s admiration for Polish language and especially his fascination with the literature of the Renaissance period (Kochanowski, Sęp-Szarzyński, Rej and others) and modern poetry (Miłosz, Herbert, Szymborska and others) have been one of the main focuses of the article. The author highlights that fact that thanks to the presence of Polish motifs the poetry of Iosip Brodsky, in the times of important events in the history of Poland, had a special appeal for Polish readers. Brodsky’s eminent friends associated with the Solidarity movement, such as Barańczak, Drawicz and Woroszylski, pointed to its intertextual and, at times, documentary character. The article offers also an insight into Brodsky’s friendship with Miłosz, the friendship which greatly contributed to the Russian poet’s fascination with Polish culture.

In contrast to Boris Yeltsin, who inefficiently tried to integrate the Russian diaspora, his successor Vladimir Putin actively supports Russian diaspora organizations to promote Russian cultures and values. It is why the subject of the article is international organizations of the Russian diaspora founded after 2000. Doubtless institutions of the Russian diaspora are up and running, with the majority of them being national, while a few of them are international. The method of comparison allowed for the researching of the process of their foundation, membership, activity, relationship to (dependence on) the Russian Federation, as well as the international role in protecting the rights of Russian minorities. Data bases on the organizations’ statutes and statements provided the source material for the analysis.

Alluding to Nina Berberowa’s wellknown formula, it is not about exile, but about the mission. Spiritual values of the „mission” of the Russian diaspora are becoming a part of the national culture in contemporary times.

Opis:
The article is an attempt to answer the question whether there is a cultural specificity of humour not in form and content, but in the context of pragmatics. Discussing humour from the point of view of its orientation to the addressee, we can distinguish three main options described by the Russian philosopher V. S. Solovyov in connection with humour, these are relations to the highest, to the equal, and to the lowest. Considering that such a simplified scheme exhausts all possible vectors of constructing a message according to the method of interpretation of the addressee (as higher, as lower, as equal), such a seemingly simple classification, however, determines not only the narrative position, but also the content and form of the message, as well as sets other restrictions. The scheme of relations (vectors) rooted in culture and reproduced by it determines not only how a humorous message is constructed, but also in many respects the readiness of the addressee for an adequate reaction in the form of laughter, and whether the author of the humorous message expects this reaction. Thus, one of the tasks of the article is an attempt to explain the specifics of the (unsuccessful) humorous interaction between the carriers of subjects and objects of power. Russian culture is the focus of the article, which is based on Russian sources.

Imperialism is the foundation of the Russian mentality and nation. Researchers are considering if the Russian Federation is a continuation of the imperial traditions of previous forms of Russian state. There is no unambiguous assessment whether the Russian Federation can be described as an empire. The aim of the article is to answer the question about the imperiality of modern Russia, through the use of the analysis of sources, history and social environment. The result of the analysis is a cross-sectional view of the issue of the Federation’s superpower. The imperial tradition, the ideological expansion of the Soviet Union, the Russian mentality and imperial nostalgia, and now foreign policy and the need for a strong leader, speak for recognizing Russia as a kind of empire. At the same time, economic weakness, declining influence in post-Soviet areas and the uncertain situation on the international arena prove that imperialism is only the past of the Russian nation. The evaluation of Russian imperialism depends on the perspective, because taking into account the determination to be perceived as in the time of the Russian Empire, their mentality and the fact that the “empire” is one of the few common elements for the entire nation – despite the undisputed weaknesses – The Russian Federation is a specific form of the modern empire.

This paper is a short history of presentation of Russian emigrant literature in Polish textbookssince the 1970s. The author emphasizes that even in the period of Marxist views the best specialistson the subject tried to overcome the pressure of the dominant ideology and to give a completethough necessarily brief analysis of the most important writers of the „first wave” of Russianemigration. In the 1990s starts the process of „rediscovery” of many unknown names in the „thirdwave” of Russian emigrant literature which have also found their way into the textbooks. Theauthor believes that the ever increasing development of scientific research in the field will result inthe appearance of a new Polish textbook which will be able to fully satisfy the students’ needs.

The paper aims at investigating the demonstration of Russian intuition in the contemporary Russian speculative fiction. The research thesis is that the Russians, both presented in literature and within the frames of the national character studies, manifest themselves as the intuitive introvert type according to Carl Gustav Jung’s classification. For validating the thesis, as far as the proposed literary works are concerned, one should use the instruments offered by cultural literary criticism along with the support of non-literary disciplines, such as intercultural communication and ethnopsychology. Moreover, one should consider also notes on Russian national character taken by Jung himself as well as studies on the sociocultural aspect of the analysed works. A wide range of methods and perspectives allows deep research of the “feeling – intuitive” Jungian scale as manifested within literary characters representing the Russian element (also called Russianness) in the selected works, which belong to the most significant and/or popular pieces of contemporary speculative fiction in Russia.

The second part of the article draws the readers’ attention to some great Polish characters who provided the inspiration for Cvetaeva’s poems, e.g. the pretender for the Russian throne called Dymitri the Impostor, Marina Mnishek, Isabella Chartorysky and the poet’s grandmother. Besides her poetic inspirations this part of the article is also focused on the process of creating and rethinking the conception of characters, that took place in her poetic mind after sometime. The analysis of the poetical pieces is supplemented with commentary and some remarks, taken from the poet’s memories and essays as well as some other sources.

Alexander Sokurov is considered to be a creator who often attempts to settle with the uncomfortable past, at the same time revealing the mechanisms of the functioning of power and politics, including the policy of remembrance. The Russian Ark (2002) and Francofonia (2015), which divides over a dozen years and which seemingly concern two different countries and situations, are no different in this respect. And yet, using the same motif in them, i.e. the motif of the museum, Sokurov in Francofonia returns to events that he could not, for various reasons, deal with in a prior movie. We mean here the role of museums, “silent” witnesses of history. The evacuation of works of art from the Hermitage and the Louvre during the war is a source of pride and an element of the victorious narrative, but in the case of Hermitage it is impossible not to think about the price that the city and its inhabitants paid during their siege. They could not be evacuated as efficiently as the museum collections. And thus the idea of saving valuable works of the Hermitage will be invariably associated with the inept evacuation of the people of Leningrad. And it must be admitted that this is not the first opportunity when it comes to Sokurov to remind the world of the painful wound inflicted on the city of Neva and its inhabitants, not only by the Germans, but also to ask about the price of survival.

Finally, the material layout consists of simultaneous isolation of difficulties during the systematic introduction of the new phonetic elements.

The article is an attempt to explore the vision of Russian history in Alexander Pushkin’s The Bronze Horseman. The key role in the poem is played by the figure of Peter I, who is shown as a despot on the one hand, and a bold visionary on the other. In The Bronze Horseman, Pushkin presents a suggestive image of the flood in St. Petersburg, referring to such problems as the clash between an ordinary man and history or the essence of rebellions and revolutions. Deciphering the meaning of individual motifs allows us to perceive Pushkin’s coherent and multidimensional historiosophical vision. The main conclusion of the article is the statement that Russian imperialism in The Bronze Horseman is shown as an organic element of Russianness, without which Russia could not have formed as a strong and modern state. Moreover, the poem can invariably be seen as a key to understanding the essence and vitality of Russian imperialism.

Opis:
The Russian Language of the 1920s and 1930s in the Distorting Mirror of the Three Translational DictionariesThe author compares key word entries of three translational dictionaries: Russian-German, Russian-Polish, and Russian-Lithuanian. These are moderately-sized dictionaries published about 1930. For their respective authors (a German, a Pole, and a Lithuanian), Russian was not their native language, and yet they each mastered it wonderfully, having spent part of their lives in the Russian Empire and in the USSR.The dictionaries studied were compiled in a period of unprecedented growth in new Russian lexis. Lexical resources expanded rapidly due to violent socio-political changes and the new phenomena they brought about that needed to be named, as well as the concomitant, equally dynamic scientific and technical advances, which also caused a substantial increase in new lexis. The level of difficulty in constructing a list of key words was increased by the lack of current Russian definition dictionaries at the time. The author has shown that the editors of the Russian-German and the Russian-Polish dictionaries, that appeared in Moscow, included abundant neologisms: the most variegated Sovietisms (e.g., агитпункт, cоциал-предатель), scientific and technical vocabulary (авиация, автомобиль), acronyms (нэп, Главрепертком), as well as borrowings from the national languages of the USSR (арык, аул). At the same time, the Russian-Lithuanian dictionary published in Kovno (Kaunas) does not include a single Sovieticism, no acronyms, no “Soviet” orientalism, even a suprisingly modest showing of scientific and technical lexis (merely a few percent of the resources included in the Moscow dictionaries). This dictionary includes numerous archaic and regional vocabulary units (e.g., чаемый, чапыжник), omitted in the remaining dictionaries. These dictionaries present a false picture of the Russian vocabulary of the 1920s and 1930s. Whereas the Kovno (Kaunas) lexicographer reflected lexis that was to a large degree anachronic, belonging to another, irrevocably past era, the Moscow lexicographers were overzealous in the inclusion of political neologisms, often quite fresh, impermanent, even “for a day,” overloading the list with the code of the new authorities disproportionately. Język rosyjski przełomu lat 20. i 30. XX wieku w krzywym zwierciadle trzech słowników przekładowychAutorka porównuje siatki haseł trzech słowników przekładowych: rosyjsko-niemieckiego, rosyjsko-polskiego i rosyjsko-litewskiego. чаемый, чапыжник), z którego pozostali słownikarze słusznie zrezygnowali.Badane słowniki prezentują fałszywy obraz słownictwa rosyjskiego lat 20. i 30. XX w. Leksykograf kowieński odzwierciedlił leksykę w znacznym stopniu anachroniczną, przebrzmiałą, z innej, bezpowrotnie minionej epoki, słownikarze moskiewscy zaś nadgorliwie wprowadzali polityczną leksykę neologiczną, nierzadko bardzo świeżą, nieutrwaloną, „jednodniową”, przeciążając siatki kodem nowej władzy i naruszając proporcje.

The coronation of Marina awakened fears of Russians and hope on the part of the Polish since this could enable to gain control over Russia. Many playwrights make a mention of this important event, but not always is it the base for construction of their plays. The purpose of this paper is to show the plays in which plays the motif of Dimitri and Marina is essential, and, without which the architectonics of the plays would be disrupted, this motive appeared there only due to the political and historic role it played.

This article deals with formulas of Russian chronicle texts and their functions. According to the article, a chronicle is a specific type of Old Russian texts representing the synthetic genre and style. It is proven that speech formulas used in chronicles influenced the formation of the stylistic system of the Russian language. The formulas take both the stylistic function, marking certain parts of the text, and the semantic function, esta-blishing a semantic link between chronicle and precedent texts.

Moscow as the Third Rome is the basis of Russian thinking about the state and the Russian nation and also Russian geopolitics. It is a solid foundation of anti-Western tendency in Russian geopolitics. The belief about Russia’s providential mission is a tool of differentiation between the two types of civilizations and cultures – the “rotting” western world and the Russian world, which manifests as a cradle of traditional, conservative values that individualistic, materialistic Western civilisation has rejected.

This article examines the dangers posed by the presence of a large Russian minority in the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The detailed analysis of the situation in the period from 1991 to 2021 has made it possible to identify not only the dangers, but also the ways in which the Kremlin takes advantage of this issue to exert major pressure on Kazakhstan’s political decision makers to promote Russia’s vital interests. The paper looks at the measures taken by the authorities in Nur-Sultan, the main purpose of which is to limit Russian influence in the republic, as well as the negative impact of the adopted mechanisms on the growth of participation of ethnic Kazakhs in the socio-political life of the state.

The main focus of this essay is creative ways of depicting contemporary Russian reality in Ludmila Ulickaja’s play Russian Preserves. The image of reality is created on the basis of quotations, topical references and reminiscences from classical literature, books of history and popular culture. The assessment of reality is made through clue words, sublime words, witticisms and paradoxes, usually used with a hint of irony. The inclusion of the interlude with its parody function contributes to the ideological meaning: the contemporary Russia is on the verge of catastrophe.

Klasyczne kino rosyjskie często utożsamiane jest z komunistycznymi filmami pro-pagandowymi z lat dwudziestych i trzydziestych XX wieku. Jednak początki tamtejszego przemysłu filmowego sięgają czasów z przed rewolucji październikowej. W następnych latach bolszewicy często sięgali do doświadczeń i osiągnięć swoich poprzedników, tworząc dzieła programowo polityczne. Poniższy tekst stanowi prezentację wyników analizy czterech filmów, powstałych w latach 1911-1917: Obrona Sewastopola (1911), Rok 1812 (1912), Trzechsetlecie dynastii Romanowów (1913) i Ojciec Sergiusz (1917).
The classical Russian cinema is very often identify with communist propaganda films from 1920s and 1930s. But, beginning of this film industry was in the time before Octo-ber Revolution. In the next years Bolsheviks often drew on the experiences and achieve-ments of pre-revolutionary filmmakers during creating programme political movies. This article is presentation results of analyse four films of the years 1911-1917: Defence of Se-vastopol (1911), 1812 Year (1912), Tercentenary of the Accession of the House of Romanov (1913) and Father Sergius (1917). The main goal of research is answer on the question: did soviet propaganda cinema had its equivalent in movies from the time of tsar Russia? Author of this consideration took attempt of indicate patterns and inspirations to which filmmakers had referred in their work. In this case also important was a question about motivation, that would affect them during creation discussed movies.

The article is a synthesis of the research on a spider creation in Russian folklore as far thread mythologem is concerned. As traditional oral folk composition genres analysis proves there are spider relations to a sphere of sacrum. The spider, able to weave and move in all directions, is seen in fairy-tales as a saviour. The result of its activities is restoring of order in the world. Christian legends of aethiology show the spider as a trickster acting against God. In many genres of folk literature its web functions as a guide, saviour or liason between earth and heaven. Folk ideas connected with the spider stored in traditional folklore are genetically connected with mythological weaving-cosmogony idea and demiurge-weaver creation.

Approximation and suppositionThis article compares exponents of approximation (expressions like Russian около, примерно, приблизительно, более, свыше) and the words expressing supposition (for example Russian скорее всего, наверное, возможно). These words are often confused in research, in particular researchers often mention exponents of supposition in case of exponents of approximation. Such approach arouses some objections. The author intends to demonstrate in this article a notional difference between approximation and supposition, therefore the difference between exponents of these two notions. This difference could be described by specifying different attitude of approximation and supposition to the notion of knowledge. Supposition implies speaker’s ignorance of the exact number, while approximation does not mean such ignorance. The article offers examples proving this point of view.

The establishment of the PRC opened the new chapter in the Sino-Soviet/Russian relations. For many years the existence of the problem of the common border was not openly expressed. In 1957 the first announcements about the territorial disputes between USSR and PRC were issued in China. And in 1960 Zhou Enlai stated that there were insignificant disrepancies in the Russian and Chinese maps, very easy to solve. Over the next nearly 30 years the problem of determination of the border has become a victim of tense and hostile Soviet-Chinese relations and unproductive talks. Gorbachev’s rise to power in the Kremlin enabled to negotiate a solution to the Soviet-Chinese border problem. And consequently to sign “The agreement on the eastern section of the Sino-Soviet state border” on May 16, 1991. The agreement on the western section of the border was signed on September 3, 1994. The demarcation of the western section of the border was finished by Joint Russian-Chinese Demarcation Commission on September 10, 1998. After six years of negotiations on October 14, 2004 the Complementary Agreement on the Eastern Section of the China–Russia Boundary was signed in Beijing. On its basis the Russian side ceded the whole of Tarabarov island (ch. Yinlongdao), half of Bolshoy Ussuriyski (ch. Heixiazidao) and half of Bolshoy (ch. Abagaitu) island. Another halves of Bolshoy Ussuriyski and Bolshoy islands were kept by Russia. Both sides shared disputed territory almost equally. The ceremony of installation of the border landmarks between Russia and China on Bolshoy Ussuriyski island (on October 14, 2008) finished the long process of demarcation of the Russian-Chinese border.

The article highlights certain phenomena as well as objects of the current Russian reality, which are recognized, isolated and appraised by the Russian hip-hop artists, whose lyrics were analysed. The hip-hop subculture, unlike any other modern subculture, emphasizes the right to an unrestrained choice of one’s own style, way of thinking and experiencing of the world. The appraisal of the current Russian reality, functioning on the level of the lyrics and the style, depends on the assumed interpretative vision of the world of the Russian rappers. The analysis has revealed that the language of the Russian hip-hop artists is in most part filled with the negative appraisal. The axiological language, often addressed to the people, is most conspicuous. It often is manifested in insults and vulgarizm.
