Opis:
The paper deals with the reception of the Russian character (mind and soul) by two prominent anglophone writers: Virginia Woolf and John Steinbeck. Virginia Woolf recognizes the Russians and their soul through the perception of the great Russian masterpieces of Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, and Chekhov (The Russian Point of View, essay, 1925); Steinbeck’s A Russian Journal, 1948, presents the Russians as they were observed by the American author in their everyday life, rebuilding their country after WWII. The genre specificity of each work, the differences of time, emotions and purpose of writing, the Russian “experience” of each author, determine a certain heterogeneity of understanding of Russia and Russians; nevertheless, both form a heterogeneous whole of the Anglophone perception.

Opis:
The present article regards the specificity of the realization of the Polish theme in N. Leskov’s prose. This element of the Russian writer’s artistic world is represented in his writing of the 1860s-1880s. N. Leskov had a personal experience of Poland which he visited at the beginning of the 1860s. Most vividly Polish thematics is represented in the novel Nowhere (1864), as well as in the stories and articles of his last years: Russian Democrat in Poland (1880), Interesting Men (1885), etc.The realization of the Polish motif in N. Leskov’s prose is, on the one hand, traditional for Russian literature, depicting international phenomena and topos of different cultures as „other” which are seldom perceived as foreign and hostile. The individuality of N. Leskov is manifested in the fact that his version of depicting Poland and Polish is opposed to the official state imperial position according to which Poland was regarded as a permanent source of danger. This stereotype is destroyed in N. Leskov’s prose.

The natural resource sector has become a dominant part of the Russian economy and thus affected the political developments of the state greatly. Understanding of the interplay of Russian politics and economics after the fall of the Soviet Union is integral for understanding why Russia has developed steadily into a more autocratic direction during the past few decades. The phenomenon through which we will be analyzing the intertwining of political and economic spheres of Russia is the natural resource curse concept. We seek to understand what factors have contributed to Russia’s failure to avoid the natural resource curse and give examples on how the natural resource curse manifests itself especially in today’s Russia political reality. Does the abundance of natural resources contribute to the emergence of a hyper-presidential, autocratic regime in Russia?

The authors reflect on the specificity of the filmmakers’ critical attitude towards the previous system. The story of the break-up of the Soviet Union turns to be a story of the great catastrophe – the tragedy of the whole society, abandoned by hypocritical intelligentsia and deceived by political elites. Rosyjskie kino rozpaduTekst podejmuje problematykę rosyjskiego kina rozliczeniowego po 1989 roku – słabo widocznego nurtu próbującego stworzyć zręby nowej narracji o Związku Radzieckim, która mogłaby stanowić alternatywę wobec narracji dominującej. Their interests were often focus on romantic poetry (A. Mickiewicz, J. Słowacki, Z. Krasiński and their poems written during the emigration). The main reason of this particular interests was the resemblance of Polish and Russian emigrants fate.

Thanks to the applied method, the following thesis concerning the poet’s idiolect were formulated: 1) Boris Poplavsky’s poetic world is of a definitely substantive structure; 2) the most important role in the specification of the presented world is played by senses - visual impressions and colours; 3) the lyrical subject acts mainly as a reporter of current events; 4) the used adverbs reveal the poet’s inclination to “stretching” time and space; 5) high frequency of the “I” pronoun testifies significant egocentrism of Poplavsky’s. *

Through the content of the social and literary activity of Ismail Bey Gasprinskii, I intend to deepen the point of view of the Crimean Tatar enlightener on the importance of the language of instruction in the inorodcy’s (aliens) school, a tool necessary to counteract cultural and political isolation of Russian Muslims, to encourage the sblizhenie (rapprochement) between the Russians and Tatars. The socio-political implications of the linguistic question allow us to go beyond its borders, to reflect on the vopros ob inorodcach (question about aliens) and the current samobytnos (self-being) in connection with the issue of identities in multicultural Russia.

In 1921-1923 Berlin was a centre of Russian emigration. Many poets and writers from Russia, like Maksim Gorki, Aleksy Remizow, Andriej Bieły, Ilja Erenburg, Aleksy Tołstoj, Władysław Chodasiewicz, Borys Pasternak, and for a short time also Marina Cwietajewa and Siergiej Jesienin, connected their life with this city. It was just in Berlin where was working one of the most interesting and the most intriguing writer of XX century (1922-1937) - Vladimir Nabokov. These period was characterized for him not only by happy moments (first love, marriage, birth of son), but also by tragic ones (death offather). His stay in Berlin marked out really important stage in creativity of Nabokov. It was theplace of his debut in the pages of Berlin’s newspaper “Руль” in 1921, in which he published his first poems under the pseudonym Sirin. In Berlin Nabokov wrote his first story and first novel. Itwas where he achieved his fame and formed his unique style of writing. Nabokov’s emigrant prose from 20’s constitutes an extraordinary guidebook to Berlin. In his art pieces he recreated the topography of Berlin by using architectural codes. Most often he related the code of home to a closed, domestic and peaceful circle. It is a circle tight in the meaning of space, but profound in the meaning of sensations. The lack of real home was a reason to lookingfor surrogate and it effected disorientation in the world in which poet had no place. The city hasa role of open, then foreign and hostile space. Here for the most part we can see the code in the shape of street or houses in city. This kind of code used by Nabokov, but also by other emigrantpoets, creates a feeling of disharmony, artificiality and unnaturalness.

The poet’s admiration for Polish language and especially his fascination with the literature of the Renaissance period (Kochanowski, Sęp-Szarzyński, Rej and others) and modern poetry (Miłosz, Herbert, Szymborska and others) have been one of the main focuses of the article. The author highlights that fact that thanks to the presence of Polish motifs the poetry of Iosip Brodsky, in the times of important events in the history of Poland, had a special appeal for Polish readers. Brodsky’s eminent friends associated with the Solidarity movement, such as Barańczak, Drawicz and Woroszylski, pointed to its intertextual and, at times, documentary character. The article offers also an insight into Brodsky’s friendship with Miłosz, the friendship which greatly contributed to the Russian poet’s fascination with Polish culture.

In contrast to Boris Yeltsin, who inefficiently tried to integrate the Russian diaspora, his successor Vladimir Putin actively supports Russian diaspora organizations to promote Russian cultures and values. It is why the subject of the article is international organizations of the Russian diaspora founded after 2000. Doubtless institutions of the Russian diaspora are up and running, with the majority of them being national, while a few of them are international. The method of comparison allowed for the researching of the process of their foundation, membership, activity, relationship to (dependence on) the Russian Federation, as well as the international role in protecting the rights of Russian minorities. Data bases on the organizations’ statutes and statements provided the source material for the analysis.

Alluding to Nina Berberowa’s wellknown formula, it is not about exile, but about the mission. Spiritual values of the „mission” of the Russian diaspora are becoming a part of the national culture in contemporary times.

Opis:
The article is an attempt to answer the question whether there is a cultural specificity of humour not in form and content, but in the context of pragmatics. Discussing humour from the point of view of its orientation to the addressee, we can distinguish three main options described by the Russian philosopher V. S. Solovyov in connection with humour, these are relations to the highest, to the equal, and to the lowest. Considering that such a simplified scheme exhausts all possible vectors of constructing a message according to the method of interpretation of the addressee (as higher, as lower, as equal), such a seemingly simple classification, however, determines not only the narrative position, but also the content and form of the message, as well as sets other restrictions. The scheme of relations (vectors) rooted in culture and reproduced by it determines not only how a humorous message is constructed, but also in many respects the readiness of the addressee for an adequate reaction in the form of laughter, and whether the author of the humorous message expects this reaction. Thus, one of the tasks of the article is an attempt to explain the specifics of the (unsuccessful) humorous interaction between the carriers of subjects and objects of power. Russian culture is the focus of the article, which is based on Russian sources.

Opis:
Imperialism is the foundation of the Russian mentality and nation. Researchers are considering if the Russian Federation is a continuation of the imperial traditions of previous forms of Russian state. There is no unambiguous assessment whether the Russian Federation can be described as an empire. The aim of the article is to answer the question about the imperiality of modern Russia, through the use of the analysis of sources, history and social environment. The result of the analysis is a cross-sectional view of the issue of the Federation’s superpower. The imperial tradition, the ideological expansion of the Soviet Union, the Russian mentality and imperial nostalgia, and now foreign policy and the need for a strong leader, speak for recognizing Russia as a kind of empire. At the same time, economic weakness, declining influence in post-Soviet areas and the uncertain situation on the international arena prove that imperialism is only the past of the Russian nation. The evaluation of Russian imperialism depends on the perspective, because taking into account the determination to be perceived as in the time of the Russian Empire, their mentality and the fact that the “empire” is one of the few common elements for the entire nation – despite the undisputed weaknesses – The Russian Federation is a specific form of the modern empire.

This paper is a short history of presentation of Russian emigrant literature in Polish textbookssince the 1970s. The author emphasizes that even in the period of Marxist views the best specialistson the subject tried to overcome the pressure of the dominant ideology and to give a completethough necessarily brief analysis of the most important writers of the „first wave” of Russianemigration. In the 1990s starts the process of „rediscovery” of many unknown names in the „thirdwave” of Russian emigrant literature which have also found their way into the textbooks. Theauthor believes that the ever increasing development of scientific research in the field will result inthe appearance of a new Polish textbook which will be able to fully satisfy the students’ needs.

Opis:
The paper aims at investigating the demonstration of Russian intuition in the contemporary Russian speculative fiction. The research thesis is that the Russians, both presented in literature and within the frames of the national character studies, manifest themselves as the intuitive introvert type according to Carl Gustav Jung’s classification. For validating the thesis, as far as the proposed literary works are concerned, one should use the instruments offered by cultural literary criticism along with the support of non-literary disciplines, such as intercultural communication and ethnopsychology. Moreover, one should consider also notes on Russian national character taken by Jung himself as well as studies on the sociocultural aspect of the analysed works. A wide range of methods and perspectives allows deep research of the “feeling – intuitive” Jungian scale as manifested within literary characters representing the Russian element (also called Russianness) in the selected works, which belong to the most significant and/or popular pieces of contemporary speculative fiction in Russia.

Opis:
The article introduces new results of the genealogy research into Marina Cvetaeva’s family, particularly of its Polish line that can be traced back to the poet’s grandmother Maria Bernacka (Mayn). The approximate life periods of the poet’s Polish ancestors such as: grand grandmother Marianna Leduchovska and grand grandfather Luka Bernatsky, as well as grand grand grandfather Stanislav Leduchovsky and grand grand grandmother Elzhbeta Hoffman till the dynasty’s legendary founder Nestor Halka Leduchovsky count Shalava (Salava) (who was lived in the middle of the 15th century) have been set. The second part of the article draws the readers’ attention to some great Polish characters who provided the inspiration for Cvetaeva’s poems, e.g. the pretender for the Russian throne called Dymitri the Impostor, Marina Mnishek, Isabella Chartorysky and the poet’s grandmother. Besides her poetic inspirations this part of the article is also focused on the process of creating and rethinking the conception of characters, that took place in her poetic mind after sometime. The analysis of the poetical pieces is supplemented with commentary and some remarks, taken from the poet’s memories and essays as well as some other sources.
