Opis:
One of the main reasons of using a rule-based approach to program control systems is that they can be formally verified. For such systems communication with the environment is often encoded within the knowledge base. Such inclusion may lead to issues with portability, extendibility, maintainability, and interoperability. The paper proposes a four layer architecture to solve these issues. A proof-of-concept RBS, targeted at control systems, and an example case are also given.

Opis:
Due to the vast and rapid increase in the size of data, data mining has been an increasingly important tool for the purpose of knowledge discovery to prevent the presence of rich data but poor knowledge. In this context, machine learning can be seen as a powerful approach to achieve intelligent data mining. In practice, machine learning is also an intelligent approach for predictive modelling. Rule learning methods, a special type of machine learning methods, can be used to build a rule based system as a special type of expert systems for both knowledge discovery and predictive modelling. A rule based system may be represented through different structures. The techniques for representing rules are known as rule representation, which is significant for knowledge discovery in relation to the interpretability of the model, as well as for predictive modelling with regard to efficiency in predicting unseen instances. This paper justifies the significance of rule representation and presents several existing representation techniques. Two types of novel networked topologies for rule representation are developed against existing techniques. This paper also includes complexity analysis of the networked topologies in order to show their advantages comparing with the existing techniques in terms of model interpretability and computational efficiency.

A large number of different tags, limited corpora and the free word order are the main causes of low accuracy of tagging in Polish (automatic disambiguation of morphological descriptions) by applying commonly used techniques based on stochastic modeling. In the paper the rule-based architecture of the TaKIPI Polish tagger combining handwritten and automatically extracted rules is presented. The possibilities of optimization of its parameters and component are discussed, including the possibility of using different methods of rules extraction, than C4.5 Decision Trees applied initially. The main goal of this paper is to explore a range of promising rule-based classifiers and investigate their impact on the accuracy of tagging. Simple techniques of combing classifiers are also tested. The performed experiments have shown that even a simple combination of different classifiers can increase the tagger's accuracy by almost one percent.

This paper presents a new root-extraction approach for Arabic words. The approach tries to assign for Arabic words a unique root without relying on a database of word roots, a list of word patterns or a list of all the prefixes and the suffixes of the Arabic words. Unlike most of Arabic rule-based stemmers, it tries to predict the root-letters positions one by one based on some rules and relations among the word letters and their placement in the word. This paper focuses on two parts of the approach. The first one introduces some rules to distinguish between the Arabic definite article and the permanent component that may found in any Arabic word. The second one classifies Arabic letters in to groups according to their positions in the word. The proposed approach is a system composed of several modules used to extract the word root. The approach has been evaluated using the Holy Quran words. The evaluation results show a promising root extraction algorithm.

Aim: This paper presupposes a purely Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) based system. Its aim is to describe how such a system facilitates complete new possibilities to design a suitable monetary policy. More specifically, the purpose is to show that the available monetary tools can be used to design a rule-based monetary policy that guarantees stability of purchasing power and interest rates. Research methods: The paper is design oriented. It describes how the monetary system could function The important monetary variables are defined and their relationship is described. To illustrate these variables and their relationship, simulation results of their behavior are added. Conclusions: It is shown that it is indeed possible to design a monetary policy that is rule based and guarantees stability of purchasing power and interest rates. Crucial elements in the design are linking the balances of the CBDC-accounts to a proxy of the domestic product and replacing the use of government bonds by allowing the government to borrow from the Central Bank and giving households and businesses the opportunity to open a savings account at the Central Bank. Originality: The approach is completely new. It is the result of rethinking the possibilities of a complete transition of bank money to CBDC. Implications: The paper shows that a more absolute transition to the use of CBDC makes it possible to establish a clearer and more stable monetary practice, and that it is necessary therefore to revise monetary theory.

Electronic waste generated from Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) has become a global issue as this represents a negative impact on both environment and human health. Consequently, it is noticeably useful to develop tools to soften such impact. Therefore, this article presents a rules-based system implemented in Prolog aiming at guiding ICT devices users towards good practices on electronic waste management to diminish the negative impact. The methodologies employed include exploratory, descriptive, and experimental. Even though the system developed in Prolog was found to be deficient with user interface, it is also functional and efficient, including features like usability and maintainability. In conclusion, it was found that waste recollection systems may be useful for both environmental management processes in different countries and also positive business opportunities.

Rules are one of the most important knowledge representation methods. Rule-based expert systems proved to be a successful AI technology in a number of areas. Building such systems requires creating a rule-base, as well as providing an effective inference mechanism that fires rules appropriate in a given context. Building and maintaining such a rule-base is a very difficult task and can be supported by a sepcially designed tools. Due to the fact that inference engines usually are parts of such tools it is difficult to integrate such expert systems with external software. In this paper a custom inference engine was presented, that implements three inference algorithms and can be easily integrated with other systems. Its usage in selected intelligent systems was also described.

Rule languages and inference engines incorporate reasoning capabilities to Web information systems. This paper presents an approach for the specification and development of Web applications performing the usual functionalities of data management and incorporating a rule engine for reasoning capabilities. The proposed approach is based on the definition of a high-level representation of the semantics of rule-based applications through a formalism for conceptual modeling combining lightweight ontologies and production rules. These models are used as the source for a model-driven method that applies several transformations to conceptual models generating the rule-based Web application code in an automatic process. As a result, the rule-based Web application embeds a rule engine suitable for deducing information by applying an inference process. The structure of the information managed by the Web application is based on ontology classes, whereas the logical expressions applied in reasoning are obtained from production rules of the model. A rule-based Web application has been developed and evaluated using a supporting tool that implements the ideas presented in this paper.

Towards the Methodology for Extending Princeton WordNetThe paper presents the methodology and results of the first, pilot stage of the extension of Princeton WordNet, a huge electronic English language thesaurus and lexico-semantic network based on synsets, ie. sets of synonymous lexical units, or lemma sense pairs. The necessity for such extension arose in the course of mapping plWordNet (Polish WordNet - Słowosieć) onto Princeton WordNet, which produced a large number of inter-lingual hyponymy links signalling differences in the structure and lexical coverage of the two networks. The proposed strategy uses I-hyponymy links as pointers to presumed gaps in the lexical coverage of PrincetonWordNet and offers strategies of filling them in with new lexical units and synsets.

The paper discusses an approach which is targeted at obtaining maximal benefits of contemporary advanced lighting systems. The benefits are expressed in terms of improved energy efficiency (i.e. lower power consumption) or citizens ąuality of life. Applying proposed solution one could use intelligent control methods which functionality goes far beyond simple preset lighting scenarios as it is present in existing commercial systems. The main problem tackled here is a high complexity of control algorithms related to a size of a state space compound of lighting profiles, fixtures' working parameters and varying environment conditions. The proposed method, designed for solving this issue, is using decom-posable graph representations of the environment under control, and multiagent system deployed on it. An important component of the system is a rule-based engine, adapting lighting control parameters to actual environment needs.

Although the first rule-based systems were created as early as thirty years ago, this methodology of expert systems designing still proves to be useful. It becomes especially important in medical applications, while treating evidence given in an electronic format. Constructing the knowledge base of a rule-based system and, especially, of a system with uncertainty is a difficult task because of the size of this base as well as its heterogeneous character. The base consists of facts, ordinary rules and meta-rules, which differ from each other regarding both the syntax structure and the semantics. Having no tool to aid designing and maintaining the knowledge base of a rule-based system with uncertainty, we propose the algebra of rules with uncertainty which gives us theoretical foundations to build such a tool. Using the tool, it will be possible to indicate the facts and rules of a redundant character, as well as the pairs of facts and the pairs of rules which are contradictory to each other. The above tool is used in designing and maintaining the knowledge base of a system intended to prognosticate the effects of a medical treatment of the bronchial asthma disease.

A programmable controller suited for automation applications of highest safety criticality is presented. Its features are input conditioning by low-resolution analogue-to-digital converters, inference by look-up in rule set tables, strictly periodic and jitter-free operation, high speed and simplicity of design. A fail-safe supervisor immediately initiates an emergency shut-down in case of a malfunction. The software in form of rule base tables can easily be verified by inspection. This device is used to implement control algorithms working with set-point preprocessors, which calculate internal set-point graphs of controlled variables in such a way that very high controller gains are attainable and, thus, stability is increased. The performance of these „SPP” controllers is closer to the „best physically possible”, and much more predictable than the one of conventional control structures. The otherwise conficting design objectives stability, safety, high speed, small energy consumption, or steady and harmonic temporal controller output values can nearly all be achieved.

Opis:
This paper describes a new approach, the HeKatE methodology, to the design and development of complex rule-based systems for control and decision support. The main paradigm for rule representation, namely, eXtended Tabular Trees (XTT), ensures high density and transparency of visual knowledge representation. Contrary to traditional, flat rule-based systems, the XTT approach is focused on groups of similar rules rather than on single rules. Such groups form decision tables which are connected into a network for inference. Efficient inference is assured as only the rules necessary for achieving the goal, identified by the context of inference and partial order among tables, are fired. In the paper a new version of the language-XTT2-is presented. It is based on ALSV(FD) logic, also described in the paper. Another distinctive feature of the presented approach is a top-down design methodology based on successive refinement of the project. It starts with Attribute Relationship Diagram (ARD) development. Such a diagram represents relationships between system variables. Based on the ARD scheme, XTT tables and links between them are generated. The tables are filled with expert-provided constraints on values of the attributes. The code for rule representation is generated in a humanreadable representation called HMR and interpreted with a provided inference engine called HeaRT. A set of software tools supporting the visual design and development stages is described in brief.

Opis:
Rapid deployment of IT brings about new issues with software usability measurement. Usability is based on users’ experience and is strongly subjective, having a qualitative character. The users’ comfort is usually collected by surveys in their daily work. The present article stems from an experimental study related to the evaluation of the usability of tools by a rule-based system. The work suggests a robust computational model that will be able to avoid the main problems arising from the experimental study (a large and less-legible rule base) and to deal with the vagueness of IT user experience, different levels of skills and various numbers of filled questionnaires in different departments. The computational model is based on three hierarchical levels of aggregation supported by fuzzy logic. Choices for the most suitable aggregation functions in each level are advocated and illustrated with examples. The number of questions and granularity of answers in this approach can be adjusted to each user group, which could reduce the response burden and errors. Finally, the paper briefly describes further possibilities of the suggested approach.

Opis:
In the paper an algorithm for automatic knowledge acquisition is proposed. The knowledge is acquired from aggregate data stored in different repositories. The algorithm operates by means of semantic data integration, allowing both syntax and semantic differences between data coming from different sources. If only we know data taxonomies, can interpret data schemas and design schema mappings, then the differences are not an obstacle to integration. The acquired knowledge is being defined in a form of production rules with uncertainty. The considerations are illustrated with medical examples.

Opis:
This paper presents a novel learning methodology based on the hybrid algorithm for interval type-2 (IT2) fuzzy logic systems (FLS). Since in the literature only back-propagation method has been proposed for tuning of both antecedent and consequent parameters of type-2 fuzzy logic systems, a hybrid learning algorithm has been developed. The hybrid method uses recursive orthogonal least-squares method for tuning of consequent parameters as well as the back-propagation method for tuning of antecedent parameters. The systems were tested for three types of inputs: a) interval singleton b) interval type-1 (T1) non-singleton, c) interval type-2 non-singleton. The experimental results of the application of the hybrid interval type-2 fuzzy logic systems for scale breaker entry temperature prediction in a real hot strip mill were carried out for three different types of coils. They proved the feasibility of the systems developed here for scale breaker entry temperature prediction. Comparison with type-1 fuzzy logic systems shows that the hybrid learning interval type-2 fuzzy logic systems improve performance in scale breaker entry temperature prediction under the tested condition.

Opis:
Analogies between the life cycle assessment (LCA) and multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) methodologies have been discussed as well as LCA as an MCDA problem for resolving the trade-offs between multiple environmental objectives. The objective of this study is to compare a variety of specialised multicriteria methods and knowledge-based methods used to aggregate the results from LCA. The studies were conducted using examples of LCA on private passenger vehicles. The research used two classical methods for multicriteria decision making (AHP and TOPSIS), the method of conventional (crisp) reasoning and Mamdani’s method of fuzzy inference. The results demonstrate that among the methods analysed, only crisp reasoning does not provide satisfactory results.

Opis:
In the presented work two variants of the fuzzy clustering approach dedicated for determining the antecedents of the rules of the fuzzy rule-based classifier were presented. The main idea consists in adding additional prototypes (’prototypes in between’) to the ones previously obtained using the fuzzy c-means method (ordinary prototypes). The ’prototypes in between’ are determined using pairs of the ordinary prototypes, and the algorithm based on distances and densities finding such pairs was proposed. The classification accuracy obtained applying the presented clustering approaches was verified using six benchmark datasets and compared with two reference methods.

Opis:
Decision-making processes, including the ones related to ill-structured problems, are of considerable significance in the area of construction projects. Computer-aided inference under such conditions requires the employment of specific methods and tools (non-algorithmic ones), the best recognized and successfully used in practice represented by expert systems. The knowledge indispensable for such systems to perform inference is most frequently acquired directly from experts (through a dialogue: a domain expert - a knowledge engineer) and from various source documents. Little is known, however, about the possibility of automating knowledge acquisition in this area and as a result, in practice it is scarcely ever used. lt has to be noted that in numerous areas of management more and more attention is paid to the issue of acquiring knowledge from available data. What is known and successfully employed in the practice of aiding the decision-making is the different methods and tools. The paper attempts to select methods for knowledge discovery in data and presents possible ways of representing the acquired knowledge as well as sample tools (including programming ones), allowing for the use of this knowledge in the area under consideration.

Opis:
This paper proposes the usage of the fuzzy rule-based Bayesian algorithm to determine which residential appliances can be considered for the Demand Response program. In contrast with other related studies, this research recognizes both randomness and fuzziness in appliance usage. Moreover, the input data for usage prediction consists of nodal price values (which represent the actual power system conditions), appliance operation time, and time of day. The case study of residential power consumer behavior modeling was implemented to show the functionality of the proposed methodology. The results of applying the suggested algorithm are presented as colored 3D control surfaces. In addition, the performance of the model was verified using R squared coefficient and root mean square error. The conducted studies show that the proposed approach can be used to predict when the selected appliances can be used under specific circumstances. Research of this type may be useful for evaluation of the demand response programs and support residential load forecasting.
