Opis:
Let X be an infinite-dimensional complex normed space, and let B and S be its closed unit ball and unit sphere, respectively. We prove that the identity map on B can be expressed as an average of three uniformly retractions of B onto S. Moreover, for every 0≤ r < 1, the three retractions are Lipschitz on rB. We also show that a stronger version where the retractions are required to be Lipschitz does not hold.

Opis:
For any infinite dimensional Banach space there exists a lipschitzian retraction of the closed unit ball B onto the unit sphere S. Lipschitz constants for such retractions are, in general, only roughly estimated. The paper is illustrative. It contains remarks, illustrations and estimates concerning optimal retractions onto spherical caps for sequence spaces with the uniform norm.

Let 1 ≤ p ≤ ∞ and let $w_0, w_1$ be two weights on the unit circle such that $log(w_0w_1^{-1})∈ BMO$. We prove that the couple $(H_p(w_0), H_p(w_1))$ of weighted Hardy spaces is a partial retract of $(L_p(w_0), L_p(w_1))$. This completes previous work of the authors. More generally, we have a similar result for finite families of weighted Hardy spaces. We include some applications to interpolation.

Opis:
This manuscript intends to review types, pathogenesis, associated risk factors, and potential methods of prevention and treatment of the retraction pockets in adults and children. The importance of retraction pockets (RP) lies in loss of original histological and anatomical structure which is associated with development of ossicular chain erosion, cholesteatoma formation and potentially life threatening complications of cholesteatoma. The trans-mucosal exchange each gas in the middle ear (ME) is towards equalizing its partial pressures with the partial pressure in the environment. MEs that have abnormalities in the volume and ventilation pathways in the epitympanic may be more susceptible to retraction pockets. Sustained pressure differences and/or inflammation leads to destruction of collagen fibers in the lamina propria. Inflammatory mediators and cytokines lead to release of collagenases result in viscoelastic properties of the lamina propria. The process of changes in the tympanic membrane structure may evolve to the cholesteatoma formation. There are many different staging systems that clinicians prioritize in their decision making in the management of RP. The authors discuss the management possibilities in different clinical situations: RP without and with ongoing or intermittent evidence of Eustachian Tube Dysfunction (ETD), presence of adenoid hypertrophy or re-growth of adenoids, presence or absence of effusion, invisible depth of RP without effusion. invisible depth of RP with effusion, ongoing RP after VT insertion, and finally suspicion of cholesteatoma in a deep RP with ME effusion. A decision algorithm regarding the management of TM retraction and retraction pockets is provided.

Opis:
A prevailing lay understanding of retraction in the scientific literature is to correct for misconduct and honest errors. Nonetheless, though historically rare, retractions to limit the spread of results deemed socially harmful (i.e., information hazards), have gained increasing traction and become increasingly common. This study sought primarily to determine the extent to which information hazard-based retraction is supported in the scientific community and as a secondary goal whether individual difference variables moderate receptivity. We tasked a diverse sample of researchers across various disciplines who use social media to evaluate scenarios in which a paper was retracted for misconduct, honest errors, and information hazards. Overall, support for retraction on the basis of information hazards was low, suggesting that researchers overwhelmingly support academic freedom as a concept. Nonetheless, left-leaning ideologies predicted slightly greater defensibility of the practice among individuals early in their careers. We provide training suggestions to mitigate reactance toward controversial scientific findings.

Opis:
Pursuit-evasion games study the number of cops needed to capture the robber in a game played on a graph, in which the cops and the robber move alternatively to neighbouring vertices, and the robber is captured if a cop steps on the vertex the robber is in. A common tool in analyzing this cop number of a graph is a cop moving along a shortest path in a graph, thus preventing the robber to step onto this path. We generalize this approach by introducing a shadow of the robber, the maximal set of vertices from which the cop parries the protected subgraph. In this context, the robber becomes an intruder and the cop becomes the guard. We show that the shadow can be computed in polynomial time, implying polynomial time algorithms for computing both a successful guard as well as a successful intruder, whichever exists. Furthermore, we show that shadow function generalizes the concept of graph retractions. In some cases, this implies a polynomially computable certification of the negative answer to the NP-complete problem of existence of a retraction to a given subgraph.

Opis:
In this paper we discuss asymptotic behavior of solutions of a class of scalar discrete equations on discrete real time scales. A powerful tool for the investigation of various qualitative problems in the theory of ordinary differential equations as well as delayed differential equations is the retraction method. The development of this method is discussed in the case of the equation mentioned above. Conditions for the existence of a solution with its graph remaining in a predefined set are formulated. Examples are given to illustrate the results obtained.

Opis:
Purpose: The present research aimed to determine whether and how the aluminium chloride – based materials affect the cell line of the bacterial line and fungi. Methods: Cytotoxicity of haemostatic astringents: Alustat (liquid), Alustat (gel), Alustat (foam), Alustin, Hemostat, Racestyptine and Traxodent containing AlCl3 was conducted on L929 cell line with the use of MTT and SRB assays. The antimicrobial activity (CFU and MIC) against C. albicans, S. mutans, L. rhamnosus was determined. Results: In the MTT results, cell viability for all agents were very low. In SRB, the lowest cytotoxicity was demonstrated for Hemostat and Alustat (foam), Traxodent and Racestyptine. Total reduction of the CFU of S. mutans was observed. Alustat (gel) and Alustat (liquid) completely inhibited the growth of C. albicans, S. mutans and L. rhamnosus. Conclusions: The viability of L929 cells obtained in the SRB assay is more reliable than that obtained in the MTT assay, in the case of gingival haemostatic agents.

A non-empty set X of a carrier A of an algebra A is called Q-independent if the equality of two term functions f and g of the algebra A on any finite system of elements a₁,a₂,...,aₙ of X implies f(p(a₁),p(a₂),...,p(aₙ)) = g(p(a₁),p(a₂),...,p(aₙ)) for any mapping p ∈ Q. An algebra B is a retract of A if B is the image of a retraction (i.e. of an idempotent endomorphism of B). We investigate Q-independent subsets of algebras which have a retraction in their set of term functions.
