Globalisation in education sector, intense competition between universities in Latvia, increase in requirements of applied teaching from private companies, growing exactingness from students – it all makes base to improve University curricula using different active teaching techniques for better knowledge capture. In the case study of University of Latvia tourism study programme authors included practice of active teaching method application used to improve student understanding and competences including research, surveys, observations, shadowing, monitoring and register of the tourist tracks, expert interviews and industry seminars, discussions and interviews with industry stakeholders, field trips, different tourism sector enterprise and organisation visits inspections, colloquiums, research result presentations in seminars and conferences, knowledge enhancing for sustainability, best practices and systems used by other countries. Many of active learning methods are as additional activities for students not included in the compulsory part of studies, therefore it is needed to establish an additional separate entity for tourism and sustainability activities for applied teaching and research at university – Tourism and Sustainability Research Laboratory. Separate research entity gives possibility to involve interested students from different study programmes and cooperation with other faculties.

Alongside other disciplines in social sciences, management researchers use mixed methods research more and more in conduct of their scientific investigations. Mixed methods approach can also be used in the field of production engineering. In comparison with traditional quantitative and qualitative research methods, reasons behind increasing popularity of mixed research method in management science can be traced in different factors. First of all, any particular discipline in management can be theoretically related to it. Second is that concurrent approach of mixed research method to inductive and deductive research logic provides researchers with opportunity to generate theory and test hypothesis in one study simultaneously. In addition, it provides a better justification for chosen method of investigation and higher validity for obtained answers to research questions. Despite increasing popularity of mixed research methods among management scholars, there is still need for a comprehensive approach to research design typology and process in mixed research method from the perspective of management science. The authors in this paper try to explain fundamental principles of mixed research method, its typology and different steps in its design process.
Obok innych dyscyplin w naukach społecznych, również w dyscyplinie nauk o zarządzaniu naukowcy coraz częściej korzystają z metod mieszanych w prowadzeniu swoich badań naukowych. Metody mieszane mogę również znaleźć zastosowanie w badaniach z zakresu inżynierii produkcji. W porównaniu z tradycyjnymi ilościowymi i jakościowymi metodami badawczymi, przyczyn zwiększającej się popularności mieszanych metod badawczych w naukach o zarządzaniu jest wiele. Po pierwsze każdy obszar w zarządzaniu może być teoretycznie związany z nimi. Po drugie w mieszanych metodach badawczych jednoczesne podejście indukcyjne i dedukcyjne umożliwia naukowcom generowanie teorii oraz testowanie hipotez w jednym badaniu jednocześnie. Ponadto zapewnia lepsze uzasadnienie wyboru metody badawczej i wyższą wiarygodność uzyskanych odpowiedzi na pytania badawcze. Pomimo coraz większej popularności mieszanych metod badawczych, nadal istnieje potrzeba kompleksowego podejścia do projektowania procesu badawczego z punktu widzenia nauk o zarządzaniu. W niniejszym artykule autorzy starają się wyjaśnić podstawowe zasady leżące u podstaw metod mieszanych, ich typologii i różnych etapów w procesie ich projektowania.

The present article is a thorough politological analysis of the contemporary international relations. It is aimed at presenting and attempting to assess Polish foreign policy in the years 1989-2009, giving special consideration to the policy towards small East-Central European countries, i.e. closer and further neighbors of Poland. Showing successes and failures of Polish foreign policy in the years 1989-2009, the author tries to answer the question about the new Polish foreign policy strategy after 2004, i.e. after its accession to the European Union. He proposes many interesting theses, including one that Poland, as a medium size country with its demographic, economic and military potential, could successfully play a role of a leader in East-Central Europe, or even function as a regional superpower gathering around it such countries as Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and even Hungary, Slovenia, Romania and Bulgaria, as well as Scandinavian countries. Taking into account the changing power order at the international arena at the beginning of the 21st century and the development of a new, multi-polarized international order, the author suggests that apart from the co-operation with the small countries of the region, Polish foreign policy should be based on the following assumptions: firstly, the European Union must be a foundation stone of Polish foreign policy; secondly, NATO must be the foundation for Polish security policy; thirdly, Poland should develop co-operation and versatile relations with the United States but it should not support those aspects of American foreign and security policy which do not serve the interests of the West, nor international stability, and question UN's credibility and are aimed at creating divisions in Europe and the world. The author used such research methods as an analysis of documents and international processes and a diagnostic comparative method.

How knowledge of students’ conceptions of social research can influence the pedagogy of research methods is the focus of this article. This study explains how students’ conceptions of social research changed over the course of a two-semester research programme. Twenty-nine graduate students participated in focus groups, interviews, and open-ended surveys to inform the instructor’s pedagogical decisions in developing the course. Data were analyzed phenomenographically, and the categories that were identified defined changes in their conceptions of research related to affect and attitudes, the processes involved with conducting research, and the end products of their research projects. Pedagogical inferences were derived from the findings, and implications for future research were outlined.

The paper presents practical execution of a course The Qualitative Research Methods at the two-year master’s programs 3+2 (MA) in pedagogy at the Faculty of Education of University of Białystok, conducted according to premises of research-based learning (RBL). The aim of The Qualitative Research Methods is to develop research competence of students in the area of designing, conducting and reporting qualitative research. During classes the students prepare team projects of qualitative research dealing with their everyday life. The paper presents the results of analysis of 161 projects of qualitative research done over three-year period (2017–2020). Methodological premises done by the students at the stage of research planning were reconstructed: 1) the topic of research; 2) the subject and the goals of research; 3) motivation of a subject choice; 4) research problems. The analysis allowed to establish that linking research with teaching enables students to gain knowledge of: 1) conducting scientific research; 2) the scientific field they study as well as the fields related to it; 3) team work (including one dealing with executing and presenting the scientific research); 4) themselves as researchers.

In 2008 the Department of Marketing Research of the Poznan University of Economics conducted a survey among the most important centres dealing with economic tendency surveys. Thematically the survey consisted of two blocks. First of them concerned the popularity of particular methods, ways of obtaining results (including self-conducted surveys and externally commissioned surveys), experience (years) in application of those methods, their most important advantages and areas of practical use. Second block consisted in the evaluation of predictive validity obtained by means of particular methods and the cost assessment of their use. The survey also dealt with a way of solving methodological problems, related to the use of particular methods, employed by the research centres i.e. popularity of ways of elimination of seasonality and trends from time series and effectiveness assessment of those filters. Whilst it is true that research community of economic trends cyclically, in connection with biennial CIRET conferences, exchanges information on the use of methods, the fact remains that this is the first survey which is a more formal attempt to sum up the applied research toolbox.

Teaching methodology of social research in pedagogic programmes we have experienced students’ great interest in the possibilities of using photography and photographing practices in the research projects carried out by them. Also the personal interest in photography and the attempts of using it in our research were a reason for us deciding to prepare a project of workshops devoted to the research strategies that use photography. Our aim was to make the most of students’ individual interests and their conscious transfer into the space of research activities. Simultaneously, the suggested classes were also a specific didactic provocation. This article discusses our project, which was carried out in the summer semester of the academic year of 2010/2011.

The purpose of the article is to analyze the idea of interdisciplinary research involving pastoral theology and sociology. This is one of the methodological proposals for research projects carried out under pastoral theology. Interdisciplinarity is understood as combining research methods for the cooperation of scientists from both disciplines in the process of planning, implementing and interpreting the results of empirical research. It is inspired by a problem identified in pastoral theology that requires exploration. The presentation consists of three parts. The first is devoted to the location of empirical research within pastoral theology. The second concerns the assumptions and significance of interdisciplinary research involving pastoral theologians and sociologists. In the final part, the areas of interdisciplinary cooperation among the research teams are pointed out. The potential of qualitative research as a space for cooperation among representatives of both sciences and as an important source of knowledge from the viewpoint of pastoral theology is shown. The comparative and synthetic method was used. The analysis shows that interdisciplinary research in the field of pastoral theology has great potential related to the acquisition and interpretation of multi-faceted empirical data and the designation of new research fields, which will significantly enrich the theological analysis process as well as the presentation and application of pastoral models.

The following paper presents a method of determining the angular position of the pilot’s helmet based on the measurement of magnetic field components, artificially generated on board the aircraft (similarly to the helmet-mounted cueing systems of the F-16 aircraft). We presented a mathematical model, which describes determining of the angular position of the pilot's helmet, based on the measurement of the magnetic field components in various moments of powering orthogonally fixed magnetic coils. We also defined modelling capabilities of the helmet-mounted cueing system, which uses the magnetic method to determine the angular position of the pilot's helmet. It has been shown that the direction cosine matrix can be used for determining the angular position of the pilot's helmet, specified based on the matrix formed from the magnetic field components in various moments of powering orthogonal magnetic coils. The paper ends with an outline of simulation tests, which enable to identify the errors of the system, using such a method.

This paper attempts to bridge the gap between contemporary scholars of democratization and researchers studying the political history of Ancient Greece. Although these two subfields already share important commonalities, they have remained indifferent to each other’s work. I argue that the dēmos can serve as yet another area of convergence between them. The increased dialogue between these two research traditions should enrich scholarly debates in both subfields and it also offers an opportunity to address their methodological drawbacks. Specifically, contemporary democratization research tends to undervalue the significance of ordinary people in the democratization process. Conversely, scholars of the ancient Greek world have a tendency to be enigmatic about their use of research methods, which potentially perpetuates the perception that political theorists engage in anachronistic research. Thus, bridging these two camps offers a real opportunity to enrich them individually, as well as the democratization paradigm that underpins both of them.

Over the last two decades the attention given to the research on Public-private partnerships (PPPs) has been steadily increasing. Literature surveys on the research trends of PPP in English language publications suggest some emerging trends in the topics dedicated to the PPP. A similar compilation of PPP literature is not readily available on the grounds of national scientific research. That is why the aim of the article is to present contemporary trends that are being developed in Poland in the PPP filed. The indication of possible further research in the area of PPP is also an essential issue tackled in this article.

The main aim of the article is to argue the need for better focus of researchers conducting their research in the field of political science on some digital analytical tools used in social network analyses. Additional objectives are to outline the historical context of SNA’s development in this discipline, as well as to present possible fields of exploration and using of this method, both in basic and in applied research. Particular attention was paid to the potential of SNA in the study of the processes of cabinet coalitions formation, as well as to the important limitations of this method. The article was constructed as a methodological essay. We inevitably accept - because of its focus on network analyses a structural perspective on social reality. We verify the hypothesis that the greatest potential of SNA could be currently to create a visualization of social relations based on large data sets, but at the same time the most important barrier to the development of the method are limitations in the access to these data, which could be used as a basic analytical material for visualization of the network and generalization of the statistical conclusions. Presenting some political science research in Poland and around the world, in which SNA tools are used, we used the historical as well as the case study method.

The subject of project managers' competencies was very popular in scientific research over the past decades. A great number of academic researchers studied the field of project manager's competencies, its impact on project success and correlation to project performance and key characteristics of a project environment. The aim of this literature study was to analyze methodological aspects of aforementioned studies in order to identify research patterns applied, research instruments used, respondents' profiles and others. It's understandable that publications related to competencies of project managers can be found in leading project management journals. These articles constituted also a basis of the analysis. Furthermore, publications considered were narrowed to those focused on at least one of three appointed aspects, namely identification of competencies, their evaluation or relative importance assessment. Over a dozen of articles were obtained as the outcome of journals review. Key characteristics of selected studies were systematically analyzed and compared, including, among others, construction of the respondents group, examined subset of competencies and the approach adopted to identification and evaluation of competencies. As a result some patterns and repeatable elements were found. Moreover, two identified contentious practices were discussed - usage of a self-assessment to evaluate performance of respondent and usage of project success criteria aimed at assessing the performance of a project manager.

W artykule przedstawiono założenia do budowy warsztatu badawczego w naukach o zarządzaniu. Omówiono kierunki rozwoju metod i technik badawczych w naukach o zarządzaniu. Scharakteryzowano proces badawczy i metodykę badawczą. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na powiązanie nauki i praktyki w procesie zarządzania oraz triangulację metod badawczych. Podkreślono, że badań naukowych nie należy rozpoczynać w przypadku, gdy stawiane pytania są społecznie bez znaczenia czy wręcz zbyt proste, by być tematem badań.
The following article presents assumptions for elaborating a set of research tools to be used in management science. The author of this paper described trends in the development of research methods and techniques in management science. A research process and research methodology were characterised. A particular emphasis was placed on combination of science and practice in the management process, as well as triangulation of research methods. It was underlined that scientific research should not be initiated in case where the questions asked are meaningless in the social context or too simple to be a subject of research.

Bringing a complex systems perspective to bear on classroom-oriented research challenges researchers to think differently, seeing the classroom ecology as one dynamic system nested in a hierarchy of such systems at different levels of scale, all of which are spatially and temporally situated. This article begins with an introduction to complex dynamic systems theory, in which challenges to traditional ways of conducting classroom research are interwoven. It concludes with suggestions for research methods that are more consistent with the theory. Research does not become easier when approached from a complex systems perspective, but it has the virtue of reflecting the way the world works.

Quantitative research methods of theatre audience in CracowThe article undertakes the problems of theatrical audience research. It describes the spectator’s role in the process of creating a performance, but most of all it stresses the spectator’s value as an institution’s customer, thus justifying the necessity of undertaking such research. The article describes the theoretical foundations of quantity audience research based on social and marketing research and shows it’s utilization on the example of three theatres in Kraków: Bagatela Theatre, Ludowy Theatre and KTO Theatre.

Opis:
Purpose: Developing a procedure for the course of the research process for management science and practice. An original procedure for the course of the research process in management and quality sciences was presented. Design/methodology/approach: Based on the analysis of domestic and foreign literature, as well as the model of the research process, five stages have been defined, which should be included in the procedure of the research process. They included: selection of the research subject, determination of the nature of the research, determination of the transparency of the research purpose, selection of the method of conducting the research, determination of the size of the studied sample. Findings: Taking into account the model of the research process, a procedure for conducting research was developed. Research limitations/implications: The developed procedure is a premise for conducting further research in the direction of assigning research methods and techniques to individual elements of the research process stages in management and quality sciences. Selection of appropriate methods and research techniques will translate into the verification of research hypotheses, such as and answers to research questions. Practical implications: First of all, it is important to develop a procedure for the course of the research process for management science and practice, and then, for individual stages of this process, assign appropriate research methods and techniques. Social implications: The author's procedure for the course of the research process presented in this article is a response to how to operationalize phenomena in the sciences on management and quality and thus translate into research related to Industry 4.0. Originality/value: The developed procedure for the course of the research process allows for detailed familiarization and carrying out of scientific research, and in particular for a precise presentation of the characteristics of the tested entity, dispelling doubts regarding the transparency of the conducted research, appropriate description of the method of conducting the research, and determining the size of the research sample.

The scientific discipline of archeology has gone through various stages of its development and improvement of research methods. First, it was combined with ancient history and the history of art. In the mid-nineteenth century, the base of its chronology was on biblical events. Modernist archeology of the twentieth century focused on classifying monuments and reconstructing cultural processes. In the second half of the twentieth century, archeology inspired other disciplines of culture and science to “stratigraphically” look at their own history. In this way, the stratification of scientific thought (archeology of knowledge), the history of photography (archeology of photography), and the media (archeology of media) began to be analyzed. Archeology has become a cognitive metaphor in contemporary culture. Lack of knowledge of the theoretical and methodological achievements worked out by archaeologists may, after some time, lead to the trivialization and petrification of the archaeological metaphor, although today it still seems fresh and innovative for “archeology of media,” “archeology of photography,” or “archeology of modernism.”

The origin of maritime research lies in a multi‐disciplinary approach. The philosophical grounding for academic research inherently shapes the methodological approach, data collection methods adopted, and analysis techniques deployed. Thus, there is a need for an insight into the philosophical underpinnings of maritime research for better understanding of research design in maritime context. The paper will examine social science and its grounding in philosophical concepts for qualitative research, and the relevance of philosophical approach to ‘values’ in social science, to maritime research by using qualitative methods. The aim is to apprise the novice maritime researchers ‐ in simplistic language, about the philosophical approach to values, as an alternative to complex descriptions of concepts available in philosophical articles and references.

W artykule walory metodologiczne studium indywidualnego przypadku i autobiografii zilustrowane zostały przykładami prac badawczych i książkowymi publikacjami pod względem ich potrójnej wartości, jako: świadectwa historii, wyznania prawdy wewnętrznej autorów i jako przesłanie dla potomnych. W studium przypadku chodzi zawsze – jak wykazano na przykładzie „Samotności i kultury” autora i jego uczniów – to wnikliwy opis nietypowego, przełomowego zdarzenia w życiu konkretnej osoby czy grupy ludzi. Głębokie, intymne przeżycia mają zawsze wymiar subiektywny i cenny w ukazaniu prawdy wewnętrznej. Dobór większej próby badawczej pozwala na dokonanie uogólnień. Z analizowanych 13 autobiografii (przywódców i polityków, ludzi sztuki i nauki) wyodrębniono dwie grupy: 1) pisanych na zamówienie (polityczne czy w celu kreowania własnego wizerunku) – dokonujące selekcji niewygodnych faktów i tworzące mity wokół postaci; 2) autobiografie autentyczne: opisujące z dystansu realną rzeczywistość, a także szczere aż do bólu w rozrachunku i ocenie własnego życia, dzięki czemu będące cennym źródłem wiedzy.
In this paper methodological values of case study and autobiography are described by examples of research works and monographs in terms of their triple advantage, as: evidence of history, confession of author’s internal truth and message to posterity. The case study – based on “The solitude and the culture” by author and his students – is an accurate description of an unusual, critical event in someone’s life. Deep, intimate experiences always have their valuable and subjective role in revealing internal truth. Choice of wider research sample enables to make some generalizations. 13 analyzed autobiographies (of leaders and politicians, people of art and science) were divided into two groups: 1) written on demand (political demand or to create someone’s image) – omitting uncomfortable facts and creating myths about the person; 2) authentic autobiographies: describing reality from a distance and absolutely truthful in eva- luation of own life, therefore being a valuable source of knowledge.

Artykuł ten analizuje kwestie metodologiczne kluczowe dla prowadzenie badań jakościowych, opierając się na osobistych doświadczeniach mieszkającej i pracującej w Polsce badaczki z niepełnosprawnością. Wykazuje on również, że autoetnografia jest właściwą metodą badań dla badaczy, którzy muszą obejść fizyczne i/lub kulturowe przeciwności, związane z niepełnosprawnością, aby przeprowadzić badania. Ponadto, artykuł ten udowadnia, że autoetnografia jest naturalnie osadzona w warunkach socjokulturowych praktyki badawczej i wskazuje na potrzebę dalszych badań, które pozwolą osobom niepełnosprawnym zabrać głos i opisać swoje doświadczenia.
Reflecting on my own experiences as a researcher with a disability who lives and works in Poland, I examine methodological issues critical to conducting qualitative research. I argue that autoethnography is a viable method for researchers who must overcome physical and/or cultural obstacles associated with a disability. I also maintain that autoethnography as well as its usefulness as a research method is inherently situated within the sociocultural conditions in which research is being conducted. Concluding, I imply that further studies are necessary for people with disabilities to re-gain voice and articulate their experiences.

The article presents and discusses the way of teaching sociology of the body whose aim is to allow students to become familiar with embodied methodology and make them methodologically sensitive. The research tasks given to the students are based on analytic autoethnography which influences the students’ methodological development. Examples of the students’ works are presented and discussed, particularly in terms of the advantages they might bring in the educational proces and difficulties that they may cause to both the student and the teacher. As the most valuable benefits deriving from this way of teaching the authors indicate: raising methodological sensitivity, the ability to link embodied experience and knowledge with theoretical concepts, self-understanding in terms of social processes, but also putting into practice the perspective of embodiment in the social sciences. The courses of the sociology of the body in Poland and their status at Polish universities are presented as the context. The authors claim that the skills learnt during this course are crucial for students of sociology and for their methodological competencies, not only in the field of sociology of the body.

Wraz z rozwojem światowej sieci www tworzonych jest coraz więcej aplikacji internetowych o różnorakim charakterze - od czysto rozrywkowych, poprzez serwisy społecznościowe, na rozbudowanych systemach bazodanowych skończywszy. Warto jednak zauważyć, te nieintuicyjny interfejs użytkownika może okazać się o wiele większą przeszkodą dla niedoświadczonego użytkownika niż błędy w kodzie. Niniejszy artykuł stanowi próbę analizy metodyk wykorzystywanych do badania jakości użytkowej interfejsów aplikacji internetowych oraz stworzenia ich spójnego zbioru.
Along with the development of the World Wide Web, more and more web applications are being built - from entertainment, through social networking to complex professional database systems. However it should be noted, that non-intuitive user interface may be a bigger obstacle for an inexperienced user than errors in the code. This article attempts to analyze the methods used for testing the usability of web application interface and tries to built their coherent set.
