Opis:
The number of empirical studies on German social work makes it difficult to gain a clear picture of them all. The increasing academisation of education and the expansion of study programs also reveal an increase in social work research in Germany. This article traces this development and discusses open questions. In addition, it demonstrates the importance of qualitative research, in particular for the development of professional casework. The paper proposes a systematization of German research in the field of social work and discusses this systematization based on the example of a study. Finally, the paper presents some further aspects and recent developments.

In this paper, I discuss how three funding agencies have presented or discussed the concept of cognitive innovation in formulating their research programs, calls or funding opportunities on their website. Gummerum and Denham recognize the association between the innovator, innovation and the contextual challenge of the concept of cognitive innovation and its impact on society (Gummerum & Denham, 2014). Research funders make decisions to allocate resources to certain research questions and not others. Researchers attempt to understand how these decisions are made and consider them in applying for funding to them. One of the information sources that researchers can use to inform what areas of research they can get funding for or how to formulate their research grants is the public information on the website of the funding agencies. In this paper, I only focus on the information presented on their website and not their internal processes or policies. The approach of funding agencies to present what is categorized as innovation or creativity has the potential to influence how researchers focus or frame their research.

The aim of this study was to verify the reliability and user-friendliness of some of the most popular ways of collecting information from respondents. The article provides a synthetic review of the use of various research methods and techniques, which is supplemented by results of the author’s own survey of 280 people who visited guest farms in rural areas of Mazowieckie province in 2019. The respondents found online and paper-based surveys the most user-friendly method while they rated telephone interviews as the least user-friendly. Asked to assess the reliability of data collection techniques, the respondents considered covert observation and mystery shopping to be the most reliable, while the telephone interview was regarded as the least trustworthy. The assessment of the user-friendliness and reliability of different data collection methods and techniques varied by gender, age and the level of education. It can be expected that insights from the study can help to improve the methodology of rural tourism research.

The article reflects on problems of an ethical nature faced by researchers utilising qualitative methodology in privately funded research – social and political opinion polls, or market research projects. The commissioning entity is at the same time an evaluator of the research project, its recipient, and a client, which may affect the research process. Utilising source literature, in the article I will present analyses carried out for a project concerning the patterns of professional careers of researchers who work in private research agencies (market and opinion polling researchers) which was the basis for my PhD thesis and examples from my own long-standing research practice. I hope this article represents a valuable contribution to a further discussion on this topic.
Celem artykułu jest refleksja nad problemami natury etycznej, przed którymi staje badacz, stosujący w swojej pracy metodologię jakościową, a pracujący w badaniach, w których zewnętrzny podmiot jest zleceniodawcą, ewaluatorem i odbiorcą badań, a zatem może wywierać wpływ na przebieg procesu badawczego. Z taką sytuacją mamy do czynienia w przypadku badań komercyjnych – badań społecznych i politycznych czy badań rynku i opinii. W artykule, posiłkując się literaturą przedmiotu, przedstawię zarówno analizy przeprowadzone do projektu na temat przebiegu karier zawodowych komercyjnych badaczy rynku i opinii, na którym oparłam pracę doktorską, jak przykłady z własnej wieloletniej praktyki badawczej. Mam nadzieję, że staną się one przyczynkiem do dalszej dyskusji na ten temat.

The origin of maritime research lies in a multi‐disciplinary approach. The philosophical grounding for academic research inherently shapes the methodological approach, data collection methods adopted, and analysis techniques deployed. Thus, there is a need for an insight into the philosophical underpinnings of maritime research for better understanding of research design in maritime context. The paper will examine social science and its grounding in philosophical concepts for qualitative research, and the relevance of philosophical approach to ‘values’ in social science, to maritime research by using qualitative methods. The aim is to apprise the novice maritime researchers ‐ in simplistic language, about the philosophical approach to values, as an alternative to complex descriptions of concepts available in philosophical articles and references.

Content presented in this article is focused on the reflection of the factors determining the choice of research strategy in the analysis of school environment. Some of the elements to be examined refer to the structural and functional model of a school, others to the interpretative model. As the assumptions about the nature of school reality are completely different within these models, depending on how the school is perceived, there are different ways of designing and conducting research. It is arguable whether derived from a structural and functional model of school (the school as an environment education, positivist paradigm) only quantitative analysis are justified, and after the adoption of the interactive model (the school as a system of socio-cultural, interpretative paradigm) only qualitative research should be conducted? The choice, at the first glance, quite obvious is a matter of more complex, because the strategy of research procedure also depends on some another factors: the order in which the study is carried out, the subject and the scope of the analysis, the experience of the researcher and to some extent, to the fact who are beneficients of the results. In the first part of this article author is trying to deal with these relationships, in the second part, there are presented a few examples of analysis when using qualitative methods or strategies. Most of them are realized within the model of so-called mixed research. They are only some examples presented and they should be understood as exemplifications, not in –depth exploration. Described problems might be explained and explored in the future using other methods and techniques, as well as combining them.

W artykule zaprezentowano dwa metodologicznie zaawansowane projekty badania przedsiębiorczości – Globalny Monitor Przedsiębiorczości (Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, GEM) oraz Panelowe Badania Dynamiki Przedsiębiorczości (Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics, PSED). Oba projekty powstały w odpowiedzi na potrzebę pozyskania materiału empirycznego wysokiej jakości, stanowiącego podstawę do przeprowadzania międzynarodowych analiz porównawczych oraz badań podłużnych. Oba projekty mają również przewagę nad oficjalnymi danymi statystycznymi, polegającą na pełnej porównywalności oraz możliwości głębszego wglądu w motywacje, postawy, zachowania i aspiracje przedsiębiorców. W artykule dokonano porównania metodologii badań w obu projektach. Przedstawiono również przykładowe możliwości tworzenia nowej wiedzy na podstawie danych empirycznych w nich zebranych, a także oceniono, w jakim stopniu odpowiadają one na zidentyfikowane zapotrzebowania badawcze. Opisano również mocne strony obu projektów, a także ich perspektywy w przyszłości.
The paper presents two methodologically advanced projects in the field of entrepreneurship – Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) and Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics (PSED). Both of them were created as an answer to the need for obtaining high-quality empirical material that could be the base for international comparisons and longitudinal analyses. Both projects also have an advantage over official statistics, namely full comparability and possibility of in-depth insight into motives, attitudes, behaviors and aspirations of entrepreneurs. In the paper a comparison of methodologies of projects is presented. I also show exemplary possibilities of creating new knowledge based on empirical data gathered in the projects and assess how they answer the identified research needs. Finally, the strengths and future perspectives of the projects are discussed.

The presented research is a microethnographic report from a visual ethnography undertaken in May 2016, in 6 Japanese schools and 1 adult support center with disabilities located on island Kyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture. The study deals with a issues of the educational material culture and refers to the study of space and school artifacts designed in schools for students with special educational needs – understood as intellectual disabilities and for adults with such potential as well. The research was grounded in E. Schein’s organizational culture, furthermore on the concept of private space and public space described by T. Tamura and my author’s concept developed at the reinterreted role of the handicapped human in stationary institution published by W. Wolfensberger’s (1969).

Gamified market research tools help to increase respondents’ engagement and obtain more indepth results. Up till now the eff ects of gamifi cation have been tested in the offl ine environment. The COVID-19 pandemic changed the world of the qualitative research and also triggered a need to replicate some previously presented eff ects. The article shows the results of two experiments proving the eff ectiveness of gamifi ed approach to the qualitative advertisement and product concept testing in an online environment. The experimental groups with a narrative context added to a question regarding the fi rst impression after viewing an advertisement or reading a product concept provided more elaborated answers to the open-ended questions than the control groups with a standard task. What’s important, for the advertisement test the eff ect was signifi cant for both online and offl ine conditions, whereas in the case of the product concept test only the online variant proved the superiority of the gamified task.

Aim/purpose - The paper explores the issue of building interdisciplinary research teams from the point of view of the evaluation requirements for Polish researchers and research units. The main aim of the paper is to determine the possibility of creating interdisciplinary research teams involving management and economics researchers. Design/methodology/approach - The author searched 30,404 journals. An assumption was made that team creation should reflect the evaluation requirements of several measurement factors of similarity between disciplines, these were duly developed. An analysis of the possibility of developing effective interdisciplinary teams to maximise the possible number of places for publications and points scored was performed and discussed. The analysis was performed by considering all of the scored journals useful for the development of young researchers and well-regarded journals publishing original research prepared by experienced scientists. Findings - The analysis indicates that the relevant journals are not evenly spread among the various scientific disciplines examined. Considering the possibility of finding many shared journals for publication while achieving favourable interdisciplinary research outcomes and scoring a high number of evaluation points, researchers in the fields of economics as well as finance and management and quality sciences should mainly cooperate with researchers in the field of socio-economic geography and sociological sciences. Research implications/limitations - The analysis was based on the Polish national research evaluation system, which may limit the generalisation of the results. Originality/value/contribution - The results presented in the paper may be useful for researchers, research team managers and authorities who run research units and create effective research teams.

The article provides a methodological review of research reports published in the main Polish journals of education. The query encompass the papers published in the seven journals from 2008 to 2011. Ones of the properties which have been observed are: research strategy, research question and hypothesis, type of sampling, size of sample, method of data collection and data analysis, and include type of statistical analysis. The results show that reports where quantitative strategy was used are overrepresented. In many cases generalization of research results has been done by authors. Moreover, this generalization was independent from type of sampling, research strategy and design. There was not differences in the scope of report transparency. The analysis also points out the diversity of research strategy due to affiliation of authors and overrepresentation of authors from two universities.

This article presents an ethnographic account of my day-to-day experiences as a survey researcher in men’s prisons in the United States. I outline challenges I encountered in the field and share personal reflections on interviewing people who are incarcerated. I then put forth a series of implications and suggestions for those who plan to conduct similar studies. Researchers’ firsthand accounts of the data collection process and research settings are crucial because they provide instruction for other scholars. Yet, these aspects of doing research are conventionally ignored in survey researchers’ scholarly publications. Accordingly, this article presents an examination of my work as a survey researcher through an interpretive frame, calls for reflective approaches to conducting quantitative research, and provides a primer on doing research in prison settings.

W artykule opisano początki chemii radiacyjnej w IBJ, w tym pierwsze źródła promieniowania, pierwsze badania napromieniowanych związków nieorganicznych i organicznych. Omówiono instalację komercyjnego źródła promieniowania i liniowego akceleratora elektronów oraz rozszerzony w związku z tym program badań. Prace poznawcze obejmowały badanie roztworów soli nieorganicznych i węglowodorów alifatycznych, a oparte były na technice radiolizy impulsowej i wykorzystaniu niskich temperatur (ciekły azot, ciekły hel). Zostały rozwinięte oparte na technice EPR badania sterylizowanych radiacyjnie przeszczepów kostnych. Wdrożono sterylizację radiacyjną sprzętu medycznego oraz prowadzono badanie napromieniowanych polimerów, w tym szczepienie folii monomerami, sieciowanie i degradację. Efektem tych prac było wdrożenie i uruchomienie produkcji rur i taśm termokurczliwych.
First step in radiation chemistry including construction of home-made Co-60 irradiation sources and the preliminary experiments on inorganic and organic systems are described. Installation of commercial Co-60 irradiator and linear electron accelerator followed by extended research program is discussed. Basic studies were focused on liquid solutions of inorganic salts and aliphatic hydrocarbon based on pulse radiolysis and low temperature irradiations (liquid nitrogen and helium). The EPR study on radiation sterilization of bone grafts was developed. Radiation sterilization of medical devices was implanted while polymer study i.e. radiation induced grafting of foils with monomers, cross-linking and degradation of irradiated polymers were extensively studied resulting in the implementation and further production of shrinkable tubes and tapes.

W artykule przedstawiono założenia do budowy warsztatu badawczego w naukach o zarządzaniu. Omówiono kierunki rozwoju metod i technik badawczych w naukach o zarządzaniu. Scharakteryzowano proces badawczy i metodykę badawczą. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na powiązanie nauki i praktyki w procesie zarządzania oraz triangulację metod badawczych. Podkreślono, że badań naukowych nie należy rozpoczynać w przypadku, gdy stawiane pytania są społecznie bez znaczenia czy wręcz zbyt proste, by być tematem badań.
The following article presents assumptions for elaborating a set of research tools to be used in management science. The author of this paper described trends in the development of research methods and techniques in management science. A research process and research methodology were characterised. A particular emphasis was placed on combination of science and practice in the management process, as well as triangulation of research methods. It was underlined that scientific research should not be initiated in case where the questions asked are meaningless in the social context or too simple to be a subject of research.

Purpose: Developing a procedure for the course of the research process for management science and practice. An original procedure for the course of the research process in management and quality sciences was presented. Design/methodology/approach: Based on the analysis of domestic and foreign literature, as well as the model of the research process, five stages have been defined, which should be included in the procedure of the research process. They included: selection of the research subject, determination of the nature of the research, determination of the transparency of the research purpose, selection of the method of conducting the research, determination of the size of the studied sample. Findings: Taking into account the model of the research process, a procedure for conducting research was developed. Research limitations/implications: The developed procedure is a premise for conducting further research in the direction of assigning research methods and techniques to individual elements of the research process stages in management and quality sciences. Selection of appropriate methods and research techniques will translate into the verification of research hypotheses, such as and answers to research questions. Practical implications: First of all, it is important to develop a procedure for the course of the research process for management science and practice, and then, for individual stages of this process, assign appropriate research methods and techniques. Social implications: The author's procedure for the course of the research process presented in this article is a response to how to operationalize phenomena in the sciences on management and quality and thus translate into research related to Industry 4.0. Originality/value: The developed procedure for the course of the research process allows for detailed familiarization and carrying out of scientific research, and in particular for a precise presentation of the characteristics of the tested entity, dispelling doubts regarding the transparency of the conducted research, appropriate description of the method of conducting the research, and determining the size of the research sample.

The paper presents practical execution of a course The Qualitative Research Methods at the two-year master’s programs 3+2 (MA) in pedagogy at the Faculty of Education of University of Białystok, conducted according to premises of research-based learning (RBL). The aim of The Qualitative Research Methods is to develop research competence of students in the area of designing, conducting and reporting qualitative research. During classes the students prepare team projects of qualitative research dealing with their everyday life. The paper presents the results of analysis of 161 projects of qualitative research done over three-year period (2017–2020). Methodological premises done by the students at the stage of research planning were reconstructed: 1) the topic of research; 2) the subject and the goals of research; 3) motivation of a subject choice; 4) research problems. The analysis allowed to establish that linking research with teaching enables students to gain knowledge of: 1) conducting scientific research; 2) the scientific field they study as well as the fields related to it; 3) team work (including one dealing with executing and presenting the scientific research); 4) themselves as researchers.

The article describes the innovative method of qualitative research, Collective Biography Writing (CBW), which is not well known or not known at all in the pedagogical research of the region of Central and Eastern Europe. This method is especially useful in the re-exploration of issues connected with being, becoming, development, and learning in the context of education and pedagogical research. The article presents the theoretical foundations of the CBW method and its basis in the notions of being as emergent within the encounter, intra-action, entanglement of agencies, and the significance of matter. An outline of the scientific procedure is also presented.

This paper presents the results of the studies on a special vehicle Polaris Ranger 6×6 800 equipped with the ”Crossbow” antiaircraft rocket launcher, manufactured by TELESYSTEM-MESKO Sp z o. o. Implementation and Manufacture Centre. The supporting structure of the launcher made the main object of the analysis. The essential goal of that undertaking was to obtain a structure of resistance assuring reliable system operation in various conditions of use. In order to reach that goal, the experimental as well as the model tests have been performed on the launcher vehicle. The experimental tests were carried out during multi-variant rides on the paved roads and in the wilderness of significant level of unevenness. Significant information on the level, directions and nature of affecting dynamic loads and the effects of their influence on the vehicle elements. The analysis of obtained results also provided the data required for a development of a model of the object of the studies. A MES model of the object of the studies was prepared in the LS-DYNA system. A high pressure was put on modelling a complex chassis of the launcher and mutual reaction of assemblies and parts. A generalized issue on the own properties was solved – frequencies and associated forms of vibrations of own main assemblies were designated. Resistance calculations were carried out for assumed loads. In principle, loads imposed by normative requirements for a particular class of armament and military equipment were assumed. Loads resulting from potential conditions of use and installation on other carriers were also included. The tests were performed for various load variants. Sensitive elements of the chassis were modified and highly satisfying results were obtained. It gives a reason to think that the chassis is resistant to expected and difficult operation conditions and assures that the whole system will work reliably.

This article presents results of the research on developed innovative protective structure for vehicles. The fundamental objective of executed work was to check the correctness of assumed assumptions, shape and geometry of the solution and configuration of components that affect the protective effectiveness during the impact of the explosive. In order to reach that goal, both model tests and experimental tests were carried out. The experimental tests were carried out on the real object. Significant information about the level, directions and nature of affecting dynamic loads were obtained as well as information about their impact on particular structure elements. The MES numerical model of the research object has been developed in LS-Dyna system. Special emphasis was placed on the mapping of complex geometry, configuration of components and their interactions. Test calculations were carried out and then the resistance calculations were made. As a load, generating post-explosion impact wave, the load imposed by normative requirements concerning the way of explosive arrangement as well as the shape and weight. The analysis of obtained results of the experimental and numerical tests allows for high evaluation of effectiveness of proposed solution.

This article deals with fieldwork in challenging research contexts that make preparation for field research particularly difficult. Challenging contexts include generally insecure places, politicized contexts, and unknown settings. Drawing on our experience in the field, we discuss four challenges that are common across these contexts: access, positionality, researcher well-being, and research design and data collection. Bringing together insights from fieldwork with urban elites and in the countryside, this paper describes problems that occurred in both settings and identifies a set of interpersonal skills that helped the authors to tackle the challenges of the field and seize the opportunities it offered. This article posits that recognizing the importance of certain interpersonal skills, namely: openness, empathy, humility, and flexibility, precedes the identification of practical tools. Interpersonal skills, instead, focus on a general attitude that underlies researchers’ capacity to make informed choices about specific courses of actions, preparing fieldworkers to be prepared to confront problems once they arise.

Opis:
Vibroacoustic phenomena occurring in power transmission systems affect the durability and quality of the driven devices, and also allow for evaluation their technical condition. The article presents the results of laboratory tests aimed at comparing the vibroactivity of the toothed gear, in which the pairs of wheels differ in geometric parameters. The results of research carried on test stand are supplement with results of computer simulations. The proposed test method can be used to determine general vibration and noise reduction guidelines for power transmission systems with toothed gear. The results of the numerical and laboratory tests carried out at the transmission system with circulating power system show that the uncomplicated transformation of the gear geometry used in the toothed gear from the manufacturing point of view allows to reduce the level of vibroacoustic phenomena accompanying their work.

New principles of financing scientific research in Poland are analysed. The main reasons for necessary changes in the existing system are indicated. Tasks that can be financed from budget resources allocated to scientific research as well as the main criteria for their selection are listed. The structure of the Council for Science, the consultative and advisory body to the Minister of Science and Information Society Technologies is presented.

Polish linguistic research into religious language has been developing dynamically after 1988. From the beginning, they have been conducted in a wide context, and although the process of their integration is limited, it has been consistently advancing. The research in religious language in the last fifteen years have concentrated in two tightly cooperating research centres: Kraków and Poznań. Religious language, as discussed in studies published there, is widely understood as a variety of standard language used in all situations related to the sacrum. The results of research initiated and conducted by the Zespół Języka Religijnego [Religious Language Group] and the proceedings of conferences organized by the Department of the Grammar of Contemporary Polish Language of the Institute of Polish Philology at the Adam Mickiewicz University, are published in a Teolingwistika series, and in continuing volumes of Język religijny dawniej i dziś [Religious Language Now and in History]. Researchers in religious language set many tasks for themselves. They search for reasons for the contemporary crisis of religious language in Poland. They are also faced with the fact that there is no dictionary of religious language, and no synthetic study that would describe religious language in a historical perspective. Researchers also want to investigate the language of young religious persons, and of new evangelism, and the influence of contemporary media on the ongoing changes in religious communication. It is particularly important that the research is not limited to the religious language used in Catholic Church in Poland.

I think Prof. Brzeziński has described some important issues facing Polish psychology and other disciplines. Moreover, I think that many of the issues he raises such as the rise of bibliometrics and honesty in conducting research apply to all countries and disciplines, not just Poland and psychology. In my comments I describe my broad agreement with the Professor’s evaluations. The only difference between us is that I think that solutions to the problems science (and academia in general) face need to emphasize the roles of values and norms more than the Professor described. Academia is in danger of being conceptualized as just another service business, a view that I think portends very poorly for the future. Noting this, I suspect he will agree with what I suggest, and that this difference is not one of substance, just relative emphasis.

Współcześnie coraz częściej w badaniach jakościowych nawołuje się do wychodzenia poza sztywne kanony metodologiczne i poszukiwań badawczych rozwiązań poza utartymi dotąd ścieżkami (np. etnografia performatywna, etnografia CAP, pisanie jako metoda badawcza). Ostatnie dziesięciolecia ukonstytuowały także art based research, czyli jakościowe badania oparte na sztuce, wykorzystujące procesy artystyczne w celu zrozumienia i wyrażenia subiektywności ludzkiego doświadczenia. Przenikanie się nauki i sztuki może prowadzić do interesujących badawczo wniosków, stąd też pojawia się prezentowana w niniejszym artykule koncepcja połączenia sztuki zaangażowanej i action research we wspólnych działaniach.

The Polish sociologist and philosopher Florian Znaniecki, well-known by his research together with W. I. Thomas on Polish immigrants in the United States, explicated the principles of his “analytic induction” in a later publication The Method of Sociology. This is a method in which research units are examined one by one and in which theoretical insights are adjusted to each observation. This process of continuous re-formulation of the research hypotheses completes when new observations do no longer offer new insights, i.e., when theoretical saturation takes place. In this paper a treatment of the original view of Znaniecki is offered. His starting-points-inductive approach, respect for the facts, dynamical fundamental attitude, special treatment of exceptions, attention for validity and intensional approach-are explained, as well as his formulation of analytic induction in four steps and the principle of structural dependence and the principle of causality. Starting from this original view, the advantages and disadvantages of analytic induction are balanced against each other and this method is examined with the aim of application. Critiques of the approach in the period around 1950, by Robinson, Lindesmith and Cressey and, later in time, by Peter Manning, are discussed and additional research examples from Belgium and the Netherlands serve as illustration of the arguments.

A specific problem in the work of a psychologist is caring for the voluntary participation of patients and clients in research. The first part of the article presents and scientifically analyzed the term "voluntary". The concept in opposition to voluntariness is arbitrariness. An arbitrary person is characterized by an optional attitude. Voluntariness, in turn, is an attitude of active participation in one's own life and the surrounding reality. The second part of the article deals with the issue of voluntariness in psychological research. The psychologist must obtain an informed and voluntary decision by the patient regarding his or her participation in the research. The examined person has the right to withdraw from the research at any time. People addicted to alcohol and drugs constitute a specific research group. In the third part of the article, attention was paid to voluntary research of students and children. A special place and significance is played by voluntary activity in research conducted by an academic psychologist on their own students. Voluntariness in children involves not only the cognitive but also the emotional sphere. Therefore, the psychologist must first obtain the child's parents' written consent to participate in the research.

Along with the development of Christianity in Poland, there was a need to deepen and maintain it, which is why funded monasteries began to play such an important role. The complexes from the very beginning focused the attention of researchers not only from a social, geographical or religious point of view, but above all archaeological and architectural. Therefore, this work will address emerging and still experiencing problems in researching the oldest conventual assumptions in southern Poland. To this day, many issues focusing on monasteries need to be analyzed in terms of timeliness and possible solutions. Attention should also be paid to the complexity of the problems of medieval convents, as their specificity requires a different development of research, conducting work and analyzing the results. That is why it is so important to proper approach the topic and eliminate or, if possible, reduce the problems that at various stages of operation can significantly hinder research processes.

Alongside other disciplines in social sciences, management researchers use mixed methods research more and more in conduct of their scientific investigations. Mixed methods approach can also be used in the field of production engineering. In comparison with traditional quantitative and qualitative research methods, reasons behind increasing popularity of mixed research method in management science can be traced in different factors. First of all, any particular discipline in management can be theoretically related to it. Second is that concurrent approach of mixed research method to inductive and deductive research logic provides researchers with opportunity to generate theory and test hypothesis in one study simultaneously. In addition, it provides a better justification for chosen method of investigation and higher validity for obtained answers to research questions. Despite increasing popularity of mixed research methods among management scholars, there is still need for a comprehensive approach to research design typology and process in mixed research method from the perspective of management science. The authors in this paper try to explain fundamental principles of mixed research method, its typology and different steps in its design process.
Obok innych dyscyplin w naukach społecznych, również w dyscyplinie nauk o zarządzaniu naukowcy coraz częściej korzystają z metod mieszanych w prowadzeniu swoich badań naukowych. Metody mieszane mogę również znaleźć zastosowanie w badaniach z zakresu inżynierii produkcji. W porównaniu z tradycyjnymi ilościowymi i jakościowymi metodami badawczymi, przyczyn zwiększającej się popularności mieszanych metod badawczych w naukach o zarządzaniu jest wiele. Po pierwsze każdy obszar w zarządzaniu może być teoretycznie związany z nimi. Po drugie w mieszanych metodach badawczych jednoczesne podejście indukcyjne i dedukcyjne umożliwia naukowcom generowanie teorii oraz testowanie hipotez w jednym badaniu jednocześnie. Ponadto zapewnia lepsze uzasadnienie wyboru metody badawczej i wyższą wiarygodność uzyskanych odpowiedzi na pytania badawcze. Pomimo coraz większej popularności mieszanych metod badawczych, nadal istnieje potrzeba kompleksowego podejścia do projektowania procesu badawczego z punktu widzenia nauk o zarządzaniu. W niniejszym artykule autorzy starają się wyjaśnić podstawowe zasady leżące u podstaw metod mieszanych, ich typologii i różnych etapów w procesie ich projektowania.

The purpose of the publication is to indicate the need for a well thought-out combination of quantitative marketing research with qualitative research. The result of this research approach should be a fuller understanding of the research problem and the ability to interpret results more closely, while maintaining the reliability of the whole research process. In the theoretical part of the article, the essence of quantitative and qualitative research, with particular emphasis on the limitations and strengths of both research approaches, is presented. The increasing popularity of qualitative research does not absolve researchers from the prudent attitude towards the whole marketing research process − including the need to verify hypotheses or research questions. Excessive simplification in the approach to qualitative research can distort the essence of marketing research. In the empirical part of the article, the authors presented an example of combining quantitative marketing research with qualitative research − for this purpose, the results of their research will be used (scientific grant from National Science Centre). The CAPI technique (n = 1103) was used in the quantitative study, and observation diaries (n = 110) were used for qualitative research.

The aim of this article is to discuss on a few antropology of literature conceptions from a different research circles and debate about proposed relations between involved disciplines. I paid a special attention on the manner of defining the research field of the antropology of literature in particular projects. This issue should be concidered in a wider context - the question is: in what extent, the research on antropology of literature is a part of an interdisciplinary or transdyscyplinary research tradition? Transdyscyplinary research should be considered as based on a professional specialization, but undertaking problems immpossible to solve within the framework of the particular disciplines. In this way it leads to a new reserch field constitution. Analysis of the presented examples implicates that antropology of literature research tends toward transdiscyplinarity.

Teaching, community involvement, and conducting research are the three functions of higher education institutions (HEIs). This exploration aims to develop constructs of instructors’ engagement or non-engagement in research as basis for developing a training framework. This study employed exploratory factor analysis. Eighty-four (84) instructors answered the questionnaires. The findings revealed four (4) factors of instructors’ research engagement: administrative support, recognition and promotion, motivation, and institutional requirement. It further showed instructors’ non-engagement in research could be due to four (4) factors such as time constraints, lack of experience and training, financial limitation, and lack of motivation. The scales have copious sampling adequacy and a high level of reliability. The instruments can be useful in assessing the level of instructors’ engagement and non-engagement in research.

The purpose of the article is to analyze the idea of interdisciplinary research involving pastoral theology and sociology. This is one of the methodological proposals for research projects carried out under pastoral theology. Interdisciplinarity is understood as combining research methods for the cooperation of scientists from both disciplines in the process of planning, implementing and interpreting the results of empirical research. It is inspired by a problem identified in pastoral theology that requires exploration. The presentation consists of three parts. The first is devoted to the location of empirical research within pastoral theology. The second concerns the assumptions and significance of interdisciplinary research involving pastoral theologians and sociologists. In the final part, the areas of interdisciplinary cooperation among the research teams are pointed out. The potential of qualitative research as a space for cooperation among representatives of both sciences and as an important source of knowledge from the viewpoint of pastoral theology is shown. The comparative and synthetic method was used. The analysis shows that interdisciplinary research in the field of pastoral theology has great potential related to the acquisition and interpretation of multi-faceted empirical data and the designation of new research fields, which will significantly enrich the theological analysis process as well as the presentation and application of pastoral models.

The specificity of the 21st century filled with economic and social problems, acts of terror as well as armed conflicts downrightly necessitates undertaking the research in the field of security sciences. However, each time defining a subject of scientific research is of the utmost importance in order to systemize research works and mainly concretize interests. Such the aim was chosen by the author of the current article who, while presenting the orientations of individual scientific theoreticians and researchers dealing with security issues, answers the subject matter question: What does constitute the subject of the research in security sciences? The author’s inquiries were preceded by the explanation of the types of security and its scope within individual cases, which includes the essence of national and international security. In the further part of the article the author’s attention was focused on the sphere of methodology in security sciences. The author notices that the subject of research in the security science is of multidimensional character hence explanation, description, analyzing, assessing and forecasting the consequences of ongoing processes and events in the security sphere, together with initiation of activities which serve for ensuring security, require applying the knowledge from various scientific disciplines, domains and fields. In the following part of the article the attempt to define the subject of research in security sciences and drawing the conclusions within that field was undertaken. The author cites the orientations by A. Dawidczyk and T. Jemiolo according to whom the subject of research in security sciences is defined as the threat coming from human surroundings and all the activities aiming at ensuring and maintaining security for a man. The article is summarized by the conclusions where it was determined that in security sciences, the security, its components, ratio, level and relations with respect to the subject of research are studied.

Rozwój przedsiębiorstwa jako przedmiot badań doczekał się wielu opracowań literaturowych (patrz: Birch, Storey, Davidsson, Demar, Wiklund, Coad, Matejun, Gutkova, Wasilczuk itd.), jednak cały czas brakuje odpowiedzi na pytanie, dlaczego małe firmy wzrastają i jakie czynniki na ten wzrost wpływają. Brak wiedzy na ten temat nie wynika z braku chęci badawczych, a raczej z nadmiaru problemów związanych z takimi badaniami. Osoby prowadzące badania dotyczące przedsiębiorczości, jak też jednego z jej przejawów, jakim jest wzrost przedsiębiorstwa, niekoniecznie zdają sobie sprawę z tego, jak duży wpływ na wyniki mają subiektywne decyzje podejmowane przez badacza w trakcie całego procesu badawczego. Autorka zajmuje się od wielu lat tematyką wzrostu/rozwoju MŚP, na podstawie własnych doświadczeń opisuje te subiektywne wybory, dowodząc jednocześnie, iż są one jedną z przyczyn braku odpowiedzi na wiele pytań związanych ze wzrostem przedsiębiorstwa, ale także szerzej – przedsiębiorczości.
The development of the company as a subject of study is explained in many works (see Birch, Storey, Davidsson, Demar, Wiklund, Coad, Matejun, Gutkova, Wasilczuk etc.), but still there are no answers to the question why small businesses grow and what factors influence this. The lack of knowledge on the subject is not due to the lack of willingness to conduct research, but rather is a result of an excess of the problems associated with such studies. Persons engaged in research on entrepreneurship, as well as one of its manifestations which is growth of the company, do not necessarily realize how much subjective decisions throughout the research process influence the results. The author has been studying the subject of growth / development of SMEs for many years; therefore, this paper is based on her own experience and describes these subjective choices, while demonstrating that they are one of the reasons for the lack of answers to many questions related to the growth of the company, but also to questions concerning entrepreneurship.

It is necessary to create new knowledge for the development of the economy. The source of new knowledge are research: basic, applied and industrial, which complement each other to form one whole. Each of these research has other sources of financing and other purposes. Due to the large influx of foreign technology to Poland industrial research is not growing as we would expect. To balance this deficiency the Research Institutes may provide services on the world market. It would be advisable to seek the provision of services on the global research market so that it could became a Polish smart specialization. This specialization would include the sale of intellect, which should never run out of customers.
Dla rozwoju gospodarki niezbędne jest tworzenie nowej wiedzy. Źródłem nowej wiedzy są badania: podstawowe, stosowane i przemysłowe, które wzajemnie się uzupełniają tworząc jedną całość. Każde z tych badań ma inne źródła finansowania oraz inne cele. W związku ze znacznym napływem do Polski zagranicznych technologii badania przemysłowe nie rozwijają się tak jak można by oczekiwać. Dla zrównoważenia tego niedoboru może być świadczenie przez instytuty badawcze, usług na rynku światowym. Byłoby celowym podjęcie starań świadczenia usług na światowym rynku badań tak by stało się to polską inteligentną specjalizacją. Specjalizacja ta obejmowałaby sprzedaż intelektu, na który nigdy nie powinno zabraknąć klientów.

I developed a method of ‘Impressionistic research’ during the Covid pandemic to enable non-contact data collection and its ethical dissemination. During daily lengthy walks, I added material observed and overheard to that gleaned from personal contacts, practising a form of rural flanêurie. To ensure anonymity for my direct, but limited, sources, I then created composite fictionalised stories that demonstrate human adaptation and resourcefulness throughout the life-course. Incidental learning is evident in these stories imagined but also in my researcher narrative as I was finding a new way of working when social distancing proscribed biographical interviews. Thus, this article describes a methodological innovation alongside the snapshots of life in lockdown in England.

Looking at today’s research practices applied in the area of social sciences one can notice a clear interest in biography. Observation of the lives of individuals, (re)cognition of social micro worlds from the perspective of individual biographies and analysis of and searching for meanings of individual life experiences are the subjects of great interest as well as confidence among researchers. It is also noticeable that researchers, with even greater attention and concern, contemplate the methodological legitimacy and correctness of the projects they carry out. This is especially important when there is a necessity to problematize and further specify the methodological identity of the biographical approach. This text is a voice in the discussion about the types and nature of the so-called biographical research conducted in the area of andragogy. Its starting point is viewing the research that uses biography through the lens of the biographical research perspective, which may adopt at least three forms: biographical approach, auto/biographical approach and autobiographical approach. The considerations revolve around reflections about specifying the individual approaches in relation to certain research projects taking into account the specific role/roles played in them by the researcher-andragogue. The text also addresses the topic of understanding the research process from the perspective of the learning process. The reflections are based on the individual experiences of the researchers acquired during the project in which the auto/biographical approach was applied.
Przyglądając się współczesnym praktykom badawczym realizowanym w obszarze nauk społecznych, można dostrzec wyraźne zainteresowanie biografią. Obserwacja losów jednostek, (roz)poznawanie mikroświatów społecznych z perspektywy indywidualnych biografii, a także analiza i poszukiwanie znaczeń indywidualnych doświadczeń życiowych człowieka cieszy się dużym zainteresowaniem, ale również zaufaniem wśród badaczy. Można także dostrzec, iż badacze z coraz większą uwagą i rozwagą zastanawiają się nad prawomocnością i poprawnością metodologiczną realizowanych przez siebie projektów, co jest szczególnie ważne w sytuacji konieczności problematyzowania i dookreślania tożsamości metodologicznej podejścia biograficznego. Niniejszy tekst jest głosem w dyskusji na temat rodzajów tzw. badań biograficznych realizowanych w obszarze andragogiki oraz ich istoty. Punktem wyjścia jest postrzeganie badań z wykorzystaniem biografii przez pryzmat biograficznej perspektywy badawczej, która przyjmować może przynajmniej trzy formy. Są nimi: podejście biograficzne, podejście auto/biograficzne i podejście autobiograficzne. Osią rozważań staje się refleksja związana z dookreśleniem poszczególnych podejść w odniesieniu do konkretnych projektów badawczych, z uwzględnieniem specyficznej roli/ról, jaką pełni w nich badacz. W tekście zostaje również zasygnalizowany wątek odnoszący się do rozumienia procesu badawczego z perspektywy procesu uczenia się. Źródłem podejmowanych rozważań są indywidualne doświadczenia badaczek, płynące z realizacji projektu, w którym wykorzystano podejście auto/biograficzne.

Artykuł prezentuje podstawowe założenia dotyczące dylematów etycznych w wykorzystujących fotografię badaniach biograficznych. Punktem wyjścia jest wskazanie na tradycję wykorzystania fotografii w badaniach biograficznych oraz wyszczególnienie specyficznych cech kultury wizualnej w kontekście badań biograficznych. Następnie opisane zostają główne dylematy etyczne badań wizualnych – świadoma zgoda oraz procesy anonimizacji. Zostają one skonfrontowane z opartymi na wynikach badań empirycznych dylematami użytkowników fotografii jako medium zachowywania i komunikowania biografii.
The paper presents basic assumptions concerning ethical dilemmas in biographical research using photography. The starting point is the indication of tradition of using photography in biographical research and the specification of features of visual culture in the context of biographical research. Then the main ethical dilemmas of visual research are described – informed consent and anonymisation processes. They are confronted with dilemmas based on empirical research results that arise from the users of photography as a medium for preserving and communicating biography.

Zaprezentowano modelową strukturę konspektu badań jakościowych oraz zasady ich prowadzenia. Artykuł zakończono podsumowaniem, które ma charakter wniosków.
The article discusses selected problems of qualitative research, received the applied logistics, its essence, the specifics. The article gives the definition of qualitative research, which is accepted by most scholars of the quality. Discusses the principle of suitability with respect to choice of methods, techniques and research tools. Has been interpreted to be situations in which you can combine quantitative and qualitative studies. Lists the schematics of the research process for qualitative research, qualitative methods used in the research of applied logistics issues. Shows the implementation of the outline structure and qualitative research of conducting these studies. The article was completed, that is the nature of the applications.

In the process of implementation of international studies researcher faces a choice of approach (emic vs etic) that are associated with the dilemma: to standardize or adapt the process of research, standarding or adapting methods and techniques of collection and processing of data in countries where research is carried out. The aim of the article is an indication of the standardization factors and process of research on the various markets. The article set out the essence of the process of international research, described the approach of the etic and emic to research on different markets and are examples of research projects undergoing standardisation on a European scale.
W procesie realizacji badań międzynarodowych badacz staje przed wyborem podejścia do badań (emic vs etic), które związane są z rozstrzygnięciem dylematu: standaryzować czy adaptować proces badawczy. Celem artykułu jest wskazanie czynników warunkujących standaryzację i adaptację procesu badań na różnych rynkach. W artykule określono istotę procesu badawczego o zasięgu międzynarodowym, scharakteryzowano podejście etic i emic do badań na różnych rynkach oraz przedstawiono przykłady projektów badawczych poddanych standaryzacji w skali europejskiej.

In this paper I give an overview of recent developments in the L2 motivation field, in particular the movement away from quantitative, questionnaire-based methodologies toward smaller-scale qualitative studies incorporating concepts from complexity theory. While complexity theory provides useful concepts for exploring motivation in new ways, it has nothing to say about ethics, morality, ideology, politics, power or educational purpose. Furthermore, calls for its use come primarily from researchers from the quantitative tradition whose aim in importing this paradigm from the physical sciences appears to be to conceptualize and model motivation more accurately. The endeavor therefore remains a fundamentally positivist one. Rather than being embraced as a self-contained methodology, I argue that complexity theory should be used cautiously and prudently alongside methods grounded in other philosophical traditions. Possibilities abound, but here I suggest one possible multifaceted approach combining complexity theory, a humanisticconception of motivation, and a critical perspective.

An increased interest in qualitative research is connected with the revival of the discussion on reliability and credibility of research conducted by qualitative methods. The aim of the article is to present certain selected issues related to conducting qualitative research. Relatively common research methods used in this area are a case study and, well established in the literature on educational research, participatory action research. Other important methods are observations and interviews that are often used as a way of collecting qualitative data, which, supplemented by actual writing, are already recognized as research methods. Finally, the article describes problems of researcher’s positioning towards subjects and the social justice pedagogy based on the concept of service learning (learning in the service of society).

The article attempts to diagnose teaching effectiveness of social research methodology in case of pedagogy students from the University of Zielona Gora. The authors analyse the educational standards of social research methodology valid in the education of educators. What is more, they address the issue of the indicators of its effectiveness. The students do a pedagogical methodology course on the first cycle studies and on the second cycle studies they do a methodology of the social sciences course, which broadens their knowledge of sociology and psychology. The article contains the presentation of the results of a double test of methodological knowledge and skills of pedagogy students, and the changes in this area after four months. One group of students was tested in February and June 2010, and the other in February and June 2011. The applied test consisted of 23 questions related to methodological knowledge concerning pedagogy and methodological skills necessary to conduct social research and to interpret its results. The questions were also connected with general methodological knowledge.
W artykule podjęta została próba diagnozy skuteczności nauczania metodologii badań społecznych studentów pedagogiki Uniwersytetu Zielonogórskiego. Autorki analizują standardy kształcenia z metodologii badań społecznych obowiązujące w kształceniu pedagogów oraz stawiają pytania o wskaźniki skuteczności jej nauczania. Studenci zapoznają się z metodologią pedagogiki na studiach pierwszego stopnia, a na studiach drugiego stopnia uczą się metodologii nauk społecznych, poszerzając wiedzę dotyczącą warsztatu naukowego socjologii i psychologii. Artykuł zawiera prezentację wyników dwukrotnego badania metodologicznej wiedzy i umiejętności studentów pedagogiki oraz zmian w tym zakresie po upływie czterech miesięcy. Badania przeprowadzono w lutym i czerwcu 2010 roku oraz z drugą grupą studentów w lutym i czerwcu 2011 roku. Zastosowany test składał się z 23 pytań, dotyczących wiedzy metodologicznej z zakresu pedagogiki, umiejętności metodologicznych potrzebnych do prowadzenia badaniach społecznych i interpretacji ich wyników oraz pytań obejmujących wiedzę ogólnometodologiczną

Is it possible to look at something without actually noticing it? Is it possible to see something in the picture that is not really there? The answers to these philosophical questions can be obtained by comparing the results of eye-tracking tests combined with interviews based on sociological theories. The answers, however, have more than the philosophical dimension in that they can provide insight into everyday processes of social perception and its application, also for commercial purposes. In the design phase of the present study, we chose a popular advertising folder available for free for the average consumer. While showing the selected photographs to the respondents (all the pictures included people portrayed during everyday activities), we asked them to pay particular attention to the situations presented. Afterwards, each participant took part in a standardised interview. In our view, the conclusions formulated on the basis of the obtained results are relevant not only to the investigated catalogue, but can also be treated as an indicator of how people usually browse through advertisements and what kind of inferences they make about the world on that basis. While most attention should be given to watching the advertisements, we constitute our dreams of a perfect life, environment and the items that furnish it.

Interviews are a widely used method in maritime research using qualitative methodologies. Expert interviews are conducted with people who have special knowledge because of their professional position. The status of the interviewer when using expert interviews brings forth certain distinct nuances due to the specific nature of the interview methodology and epistemological considerations. A renowned and senior maritime specialist or a veteran maritime professional researching the nuances of their own field encounter methodological challenges while interviewing other experts during data collection. The paper aims to examine the impact on qualitative data collected in interviews when the interviewers themselves are experts in the field of research. The concepts from the social science research from various disciplines have been examined and discussed highlighting the methodological challenges.

Ewaluacja wpływu badań naukowych na środowiska pozanaukowe stała się w ostatnich latach przedmiotem dużego zainteresowania rządów, instytucji zajmujących się dystrybucją funduszy oraz badaczy akademickiej ewaluacji. Na świecie opracowano kilka modeli takiej oceny, różniących się celami i metodologią. Najbardziej kompleksową inicjatywą jest brytyjski system Impact Agenda, wprowadzony w 2014 r. jako element cyklicznego systemu oceny Research Excellence Framework (REF). „Wpływ społeczny” (impact) jest w jego ramach oceniany za pomocą jakościowej metodologii opartej na studiach przypadku (case studies), zaś wynik ewaluacji stanowi 20% końcowej oceny jednostki naukowej. Artykuł przedstawia kontekst wprowadzenia oceny „wpływu społecznego” w Wielkiej Brytanii oraz opisuje metodologię REF, kładąc szczególny nacisk na ewaluację elementu „impact”. Następnie na podstawie literatury oraz badań własnych autorki omawia pozytywne efekty oraz ograniczenia Impact Agenda. Ostatnia część tekstu zawiera sugestie co do „lekcji wyniesionych z REF 2014”, które mogą stanowić punkt odniesienia dla podobnych inicjatyw w Polsce. Tekst zamyka teza, że szerokie rozumienie „wpływu społecznego” nauki jako wpływu nie tylko na gospodarkę, lecz także jako dialogu ze społeczeństwem obywatelskim, mediami, sferą kultury i edukacji, może stanowić wyjście poza dychotomię: nauka utylitarna vs. nauka bezużytyczna.
Recent years have seen a growth of interest in the evaluation of research’s “social impact” on the side of national governments, research funding bodies and scholars in the field of academic evaluation. While several models of impact evaluation have been developed around the world, the most robust one is the British Impact Agenda, introduced in 2014 as element of the cyclical Research Excellence Framework (REF) exercise. Within this system research impact is assessed using a qualitative methodology based on case studies. The result of the impact assessment represents 20% of the final score of the unit of assessment. The article presents the context of the introduction of impact assessment in the United Kingdom and describes the advantages and challenges of the Impact Agenda. The last section of the text focuses on the “lessons learned from REF 2014” that can be relevant in the Polish context. The author closes with a reflection: a broad understanding of “social impact” of research – conceived as influence not only on the economy but also on NGOs, media, culture, education etc. – can help overcome the dichotomy between “blue skies” and utilitarian research.

Thesis. Ethnographic research and research in action are used in many fields of science. However, they rarely appear in pedagogy. The author of the article describes these methodologies, indicating the possibilities of their use as well as triangulation. Discussed concepts. The article discusses the essence and course of research in action as well as the types and levels of educational ethnography. Results and conclusions. Educational ethnography resembles the idea of research in action. Similarly to research in action, it focuses on recognizing the need for change and introducing streamlining solutions. Originality. Both types of research are participatory research, characterized by the involvement of the researcher and the respondents. Keywords: educational ethnography, ethnopedagogical research, action research, observation, diagnosis.
Teza. Badania etnograficzne oraz badania w działaniu wykorzystywane są w wielu dziedzinach nauki. W pedagogice pojawiają się jednak rzadko. Autorka artykułu przybliża istotę tych metodologii, wskazując na możliwości ich stosowania, a także triangulacji. Omówione koncepcje. W artykule omówiono istotę i przebieg badań w działaniu oraz rodzaje i poziomy etnografii edukacyjnej. Wyniki i wnioski. Etnografia edukacyjna przypomina ideę badań w działaniu. Podobnie jak badania w działaniu skupia się na dostrzeżeniu potrzeby zmiany i wprowadzeniu usprawniających rozwiązań. Oryginalność. Oba typy badań są badaniami uczestniczącymi, cechującymi się zaangażowaniem badacza i badanych.

In studies on second language acquisition in formal settings, techniques characteristic of both qualitative and quantitative research paradigms are applied. In the first part of the article, we present general reflection on the methodology of studies on second language acquisition, with a particular emphasis on the role of exploratory research in the analysis of the process of second language teaching/learning in formal settings. In the second part, we present the concept of task, stressing its usefulness as a basic unit of analysis of the corpus of linguistic data obtained in the classroom.

Artykuł kierowany jest przede wszystkim do osób uczestniczących w planowaniu badań zachowań transportowych mieszkańców w jednostkach zamawiających takie badania. W tekście wskazano na elementy kluczowe dla uzyskania wysokiej jakości danych z badań, będących wiarygodną podstawą do budowy założeń dla modeli transportowych. Artykuł prezentuje działania, które można podjąć na etapie przygotowywania dokumentacji przetargowej i wyboru oferentów, omawia możliwe sposoby doboru próby badawczej oraz budowy kwestionariusza, zwraca także uwagę na kluczowe elementy w procesie opracowywania wyników badań. W tekście opisano również najczęściej napotykane podczas realizacji badań problemy i sposoby, w jakie można ograniczać ich wpływ na jakość gromadzonych danych.
Article is aimed primarily at people involved in the planning the public transport behaviour research, working in the insti tutions contracting this research or acting on its behalf. The article indicates key elements guaranteing high quality research data, providing reliable basis of the construction of the assumptions for transport models. The article indicates activities to undertake during preparation of public procurement documentation and selection of bidders. It discusses possible methods to select a research sample and to prepare a questionnaire. The attention is paid on the key elements in the process of development of the research results. The article describes the most often occured problems of the research process, as well as methods to reduce their impact on the quality of collected data.

Aim. Digital technologies support learning, so the search for innovative approaches is ongoing. The aim of the research is to study the role of digital technologies in developing research competencies of future Doctors of Philosophy (PhDs). The aim was achieved through the Likert scale, calculation of the variability coefficients, the level of acquired knowledge and Cohen’s kappa coefficient, correlation index. Methods. Continuous study of the methodological foundations of scientific research was provided through the iSpring Market, and Comindwork online programmes. Learning English involved using the BBC Learning English application, while OpenLearning was used to develop knowledge on the dissertation topic. Results. It was determined that the respondents who studied pedagogy, psychology, social work (Group 1) expanded their basic knowledge the most (21%). Respondents who studied journalism (Group 2) developed autonomous learning (23%). The future PhDs acquired knowledge in three subjects at a high level, contributing to developing professional competencies. Conclusions. The practical significance of the research is in developing training for PhDs with the use of digital technologies. The research prospects are related to comparing the effectiveness of training of first- and second-year PhDs as a result of the use of innovative technologies.

The research of the oldest churches belonging to Kraków agglomeration have been continuously conducted since the second half of the 19th century. In Kraków there have been about thirty churches including the sacral building from the 11th–13th century. Most of them were recognized during the archaeological and architectural research and the others are known from the written sources. The main discoveries include three pre-Romanesque rotundas in the area of a burg city of Kraków, and a St. Benedykt’s rotunda on the Lasota Hill. Further research provide more information regarding the process of using secondary material. The development in the research field makes it possible to change the knowledge about the function of some buildings e.g a semicircular wall from over the Smocza Jama (earlier an apse of the church, now a circular fortifying tower). In literature we can find a number of reconstructions of early medieval sacral buildings with relics in some of them and the remained ones are only theoretical ideas. A few temples are still undiscovered and unrecognized, and some are waiting for its architectural structure to be verified. There could be an attempt of reconstructing a Romanesque Benedictine Abbey in Tyniec and a part of bishop’s residence or cathedral’s capitol in Wawel. The main task for the future is to recognize a settlement background of the churches in Okół and its area.

Many researchers argue that the analysis process of any narrative and biographical inquiry is a delicate, arduous and complex stage and requires creativity, advanced skills and the technique of the researcher. This research note, based on a research project carried out in Spain, makes a unique contribution to this debate by reflecting about the Cross-Narrative Model, whose father was Lewis (1973), introducing two concepts: Biographical Units and the Analysis Units. Furthermore, it describes the analysis process laying emphasis on the particular methodological challenges and possible benefits of using these units to build up a two-part biographical account. This research note concludes that the use of the Cross-Narrative Analysis model could be considered as a possible alternative to the on-going discussion on advancing the rigorous and resourcefulness narrative qualitative analysis endeavour.

In the last few years, the newly opened Czech Arctic Scientific Infrastructure in Svalbard – Josef Svoboda Station – has closely collaborated with UiT – The Arctic University of Norway on very productive research related to climate change and the impact of the sea and land ice disappearance. Professor Josef Elster, the Head of the Czech station and a researcher in the diversity, ecology and ecophysiology of polar algae and cyanobacteria, and the glacial microbiologist Marie Šabacká and their team try to find the answer to questions concerning how the Arctic ecosystem responds to global warming and how global warming affects human activity. The results of their research can be used, for example, in the treatment and refinement of drinking and sewage water, the pharmaceutical industry and medicine, livestock nutrition including aquaculture and in the production of nutritional supplements for people. However, even the most exciting scientific information and results are not readily available to a non-professional audience. Interdisciplinarity and a suitable cultural framework can bring new life to the results of scientific research. If the presentation of science is interconnected with cultural disciplines such as literature, art, music or theatre, its account can be enriched and media interest can be increased. The scientific-cultural festivals AT HOME IN SVALBARD 2018 and ARCTIC FESTIVAL 2019 are just two good examples. The presentation of scientific research through culture is a very distinctive and innovative attempt. Moreover, the interest of the public can influence the stakeholders’ approach to providing and increasing finances for further scientific research.

The objective of the analysis conducted and described in this article was to take a closer perspective of the contemporary research trends that refer to the discipline of technology management. The Author based the analysis on keywords defined by the authors of the publications that refer issues of technology management. Scopus was the database which provided data for the analysis. The Author focused on publications indexed in the selected database in 2011-2016. The resulting database keywords have been ordered and partially aggregated. Based on them, the VOSviewer tool was used to prepare a graphical presentation of frequency and co-occurrence with the rest of the analysed group. The analysis led to an indication of current research trends within the discipline of technology management.

The aim of this article is to look at the analyses of the body/corporeality carried out by Polish sociologists and at the currently pursued studies in the area. The article presents the dilemmas that the researcher of the body/corporeality faces, mainly due to the nature of the research object, but also resulting from associated methodological difficulties. Secondly, the paper also points at some important empirical omissions – that is, areas or methods of research that have not, so far, gained enough attention of the researchers. Thirdly, a list of recommendations for possible, potentially attractive new fields of exploration for the sociology of the body is presented.

This article presents the most important aims and conduction of the “Patriotic Studies” project, carried by us. Research was carried out in Poland, Russia, Turkey, Georgia and Romania. We present the foundations of our decisions, and methodological solutions in fields of: aims, identification of the most important ideas, state of knowledge, research inspirations. We present the chosen research method, sample, and tested environments. In addition, the article contains the reconstruction of selected aspects of Pierre Bourdieu’s theory, on which we based our strategy. The described research has the comparative and international nature. Three main aims were established: measuring the level and scope of identification with the state and society among the university students, measuring the level of social, economic and cultural capital of the examined youth and examining the correlation between them and the level of identification with the state and society manifested by the respondents, as well as determining and examining the possible correlations between the patriotic attitude (the degree of identification with the state and society) and the field of study, the country of residence and the level of symbolic capital.

In this concluding paper to the special issue (SI) we seek to achieve three main goals. First, based on the papers it included in the SI, other recent publications as well as our own ideas, we point to the future directions of research into language learning strategies. Second, we comment upon the methodological issues that such research inevitably has to face, stressing in particular the need to combine a macro-and micro-perspective. Third, we emphasize the pedagogical orientation of such empirical investigations and make a plea for intensive efforts on the part of specialists to find ways in which the findings of LLS research can in fact inform classroom pedagogy.

Globalisation in education sector, intense competition between universities in Latvia, increase in requirements of applied teaching from private companies, growing exactingness from students – it all makes base to improve University curricula using different active teaching techniques for better knowledge capture. In the case study of University of Latvia tourism study programme authors included practice of active teaching method application used to improve student understanding and competences including research, surveys, observations, shadowing, monitoring and register of the tourist tracks, expert interviews and industry seminars, discussions and interviews with industry stakeholders, field trips, different tourism sector enterprise and organisation visits inspections, colloquiums, research result presentations in seminars and conferences, knowledge enhancing for sustainability, best practices and systems used by other countries. Many of active learning methods are as additional activities for students not included in the compulsory part of studies, therefore it is needed to establish an additional separate entity for tourism and sustainability activities for applied teaching and research at university – Tourism and Sustainability Research Laboratory. Separate research entity gives possibility to involve interested students from different study programmes and cooperation with other faculties.

Ukończenie studiów i uzyskanie tytułu zawodowego (licencjata, inżyniera, magistra) związane jest z koniecznością stworzenia pracy dyplomowej. W literaturze metodologicznej można spotkać wiele rodzajów prac dyplomowych. Najczęściej podaje się następujący podział: prace o charakterze teoretycznym (oceniające praktykę w świetle literatury i monograficzne), prace o charakterze aplikacyjnym, prace o charakterze projektowym i prace o charakterze badawczym. Celem publikacji jest przedstawienie przygotowania koncepcji badań w pracach dyplomowych o charakterze badawczym. W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawiono etapy fazy koncepcyjnej procesu badawczego. W następnych omówiono po kolei wszystkie fazy: wybór tematu pracy (przedmiotu badań); określenie celów badań; sformułowanie problemów badawczych i/ewentualnie hipotez; wyłonienie zmiennych, ich wskaźników i kategorii (jeśli prowadzimy badania ilościowe); wybór metod, technik i narzędzi badawczych. W zakończeniu przedstawiono przykład koncepcji badań, którą student powinien oddać promotorowi do oceny przed podjęciem dalszych etapów tworzenia pracy dyplomowej (przygotowanie narzędzi badawczych, przeprowadzenie badań, opracowanie materiału badawczego i redagowanie tekstu pracy dyplomowej).
Graduation and completion a university degree (Bachelor Degree, Engineer’s degree, Master Degree) is connected with writing a diploma thesis. There are different kind of diploma thesis in methodological literature. Most frequently they are divided into several types: theoretical diploma thesis, applied diploma thesis, project diploma thesis and research diploma thesis. The objective of this publication is preparation of a concept for research diploma thesis. In the first of this article author shows stages of research process in preparation phase. In the second part of the analysis every step was discussed: the choice of theme (subject of research); the aims of the work, the wording of the research problem or hypothesis, show different variables and categories(if we perform a quantitative research); the choice of methods, research techniques and research tools. In conclusion the example of such concept of research is shown. The student should give this kind of document to the promoter before starting another stages: preparing research tools, conducting research, development research material and text editing).

The book’s target audience is postgraduate HDRs, emerging scholars and higher-degree supervisors, lecturers in methodology seeking to enhance their reflexivity. According to the authors, it is the reflexive approach that differentiates this book from other methodological books, especially those intended for researchers who are in the process of development regardless of their academic status. Among Polish methodological books there is no publication which as clearly as the book Research Paradigm Considerations… encourages the development of cognitive research curiosity by applying and developing already known paradigms but also by modifying them depending on the socio-cultural context of the research. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for practical applications of paradigms, but the subject of their research cannot be clearly categorized.

Indigenous Research
Opis:
The purpose of this article is to draw critical attention to the use of photovoice as an anti-oppressive method in research with Aboriginal peoples. In response to the historical vulnerability of Aboriginal peoples to research that “wants to know and define the Other,” anti-oppressive methods deconstruct taken-for-granted research models and focus on privileging Indigenous voices, political integrity, and justice strategies. Anti-oppressive approaches are connected to emancipation and cannot be divorced from the history of racism. Theoretically, photovoice aligns well with anti-oppressive goals, using photographs and storytelling as a catalyst for identifying community issues towards informed solutions. Having roots in Freireian-based processes, photovoice has the goal of engaging citizens in critical dialogues and moving people to social action. Drawing on our recently completed photovoice study, Visualizing Breast Cancer: Exploring Aboriginal Women’s Experiences (VBC), we demonstrate that photovoice seems successful in enhancing critical consciousness among participants, but that outcomes may not be disruptive. While photovoice has the potential to develop counter-hegemonic anti-oppressive knowledge, this may be lost depending on how the research process is encountered; thus, we propose the implementation of a revisionary model which incorporates a culturally safe anti-oppressive lens.

Celem opracowania jest opis strategii badawczych podejmowanych przez badaczki i badaczy z obszaru nauk społecznych i humanistycznych w czasie pierwszej fali pandemii COVID-19. Badania empiryczne będące podstawą artykułu realizowane były w kwietniu i maju 2020 roku przy użyciu techniki ankiety jakościowej online. W wyniku jakościowej analizy treści wypowiedzi uczestników i uczestniczek naszych badań scharakteryzowałyśmy cztery strategie badawcze: rezygnację, zawieszenie, kontynuację i (re)konstrukcję badań. Wyniki analiz opisujemy w odniesieniu do cech charakterystycznych nurtu disaster research. Pokazujemy, że badania w pandemii są bliższe perspektywie slow disaster research niż disaster research.
The aim of this paper is to describe the research strategies carried out by female and male researchers in the social sciences and humanities during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. The empirical research which the article is based on was conducted in April and May 2020 using an online qualitative survey. As a result of the qualitative content analysis of our research participants’ statements, we characterized four research strategies: resignation, suspension, continuation, and research (re)construction. We describe the results of the analyses in relation to the characteristics of disaster research. We indicate that research in a pandemic is relatable to the slow disaster research perspective more than to the disaster research perspective.

Wskazują na istotne elementy dotyczące znajomości metodologii badań pedagogicznych, w tym zasad prowadzenia badań ilościowych i jakościowych. Odnoszą się także do samej sylwetki badacza, zwracają uwagę na elementy własnych uwarunkowań psychologicznych, mogących wspierać bądź utrudniać prawidłowe zastosowanie modelu triangulacyjnego. Autorki zarysowują szczegółowo strony za i przeciw zastosowaniu strategii triangulacji w badaniach pedagogicznych i pozostawiają badaczowi otwarte pole decyzyjne, jak też skłaniają do refleksji nad pogłębioną oceną zasobów własnych.
The subject of the authors considerations is to present the triangulation as a strategy that can be used in a pedagogical research. The starting point for discussion is the set of definition concerning triangulation, includes the possibilities and opportunities for using it in a pedagogical research. The authors touch upon key areas for the researcher’s decision of use triangulation strategy in conducted research. The elements of methodology of pedagogical research are indicated as important, including the rules of conducting quantitative and qualitative research. The authors refer also to general figure of the researcher, paying attention to psychological conditions that may support or hinder use of application model correctly. The authors describe sides for and against using the triangulation strategy in pedagogical research. They leave the researcher open-minded for decision making and with deeply reflection of owned resources.

Preparations from rhizomes of Petasites hybridus (L.) Gaertn., B. Mey. & Scherb. (common butterbur) have a long history of use in folk medicine in treatment of several diseases as anti-inflammatory and spasmolytic drugs. Extracts from this species are of interest to researchers in the field of phytopharmacology due to their biologically active compounds, particularly two eremophilane sesquiterpenes (petasin and isopetasin), which are contained not only in rhizomes and roots, but also in leaves. Moreover, P. hybridus contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which showed hepatotoxic, carcinogenic and mutagenic properties. Hence, special extracts devoid of alkaloids obtained by sub- and super-critic carbon dioxide extraction were used in the preclinical, clinical studies and phytotherapy. Our review aims to provide a literature survey of pharmacological as well as clinical trials of P. hybridus, carried out in 2000–2013. Also several studies of other species used in non-European countries have been included. Besides, the botanical description of Petasites genus and phytochemical characteristic of P. hybridus and toxicological studies of pyrrolizidine alkaloids as well as chemical profile of patented commercial extracts from rhizomes, roots and leaves of this species used in European phytotherapy have been performed. In this review, attention has also been paid to the promising and potential application of special extracts of P. hybridus not only in the prevention of migraine, treatment of allergic rhinitis symptoms, asthma and hypertension, but also in prevention and slowing the progression of neurodegenerative diseases developing with the inflammatory process in the CNS as a new therapeutic strategy. In fact, there is already an evidence of promising properties of P. hybridus extracts and sesquiterpens – decrease in the prostaglandins and leukotrienes release, inhibition of COX-1 and COX-2 activity, as well as antagonism of L-type voltage-gated calcium channels. In order to explain the new mechanisms of action of P. hybridus extracts in the CNS and their future application in phytotherapy of diseases with neuroinflammatory process, further studies should be performed.
Przetwory z kłączy lepiężnika różowego (Petasites hybridus (L.) P. Gaertn., B. Mey. & Scherb.) mają długą historię stosowania w medycynie ludowej jako środki o działaniu przeciwzapalnym i spazmolitycznym w leczeniu różnych chorób. Ekstrakty uzyskane z omawianego gatunku są interesujące z punktu widzenia badań fitofarmakologicznych ze względu na obecność licznych związków biologicznie czynnych, głównie seskwiterpenów z grupy eremofilanów: petazyny i izopetazyny. Wspomniane substancje występują nie tylko w kłączach i korzeniach, ale także w liściach lepiężnika różowego. Ponadto, P. hybridus zawiera alkaloidy pirolizydynowe, które wykazują właściwości hepatotoksyczne, karcinogenne oraz mutagenne. Dlatego w badaniach przedklinicznych i klinicznych oraz fitoterapii są stosowane ekstrakty specjalne pozbawione tych związków, które otrzymuje się metodami ekstrakcji dwutlenkiem węgla w stanie podkrytycznym lub nadkrytycznym. Celem niniejszej pracy był przegląd danych bibliograficznych, z zakresu badań farmakologicznych, toksykologicznych oraz klinicznych lepiężnika różowego, przeprowadzonych w latach 2000–2013. Uwzględniono również kilka prac dotyczących gatunków stosowanych poza Europą. Dokonano opisu botanicznego rodzaju Petasites oraz charakterystyki fitochemicznej P. hybridus, a także przedstawiono profil chemiczny opatentowanych komercyjnych ekstraktów z kłączy, korzeni i liści lepiężnika różowego, stosowanych w europejskiej fitoterapii. W pracy przeglądowej zwrócono uwagę na możliwość zastosowania specjalnych ekstraktów z P. hybridus nie tylko w prewencji migreny, leczeniu objawów kataru alergicznego, astmy czy nadciśnienia, lecz także w zapobieganiu lub spowalnianiu postępu chorób neurodegeneracyjnych, przebiegających ze stanem zapalnym w OUN. Istnieją już dowody na obiecujące właściwości seskwiterpenów i ekstraktów z lepiężnika różowego – zmniejszanie uwalniania prostaglandyn i leukotrienów, hamowanie aktywności COX-1 i COX-2 oraz antagonizm wobec kanałów wapniowych bramkowanych napięciem typu L. Konieczne jest jednak przeprowadzenie dalszych badań farmakologicznych ekstraktów P. hybridus, celem wyjaśnienia nowych mechanizmów działania w OUN oraz ich przyszłego zastosowania w fitoterapii chorób ośrodkowego układu nerwowego przebiegających z procesem zapalnym.

The article describes chosen, yet key parts of newly established European, infrastructural research and development project ARIES (2017-2020) - Accelerator Research and Innovation for European Science and Society, to be realized inside the framework of the H2020 programme. Two institutions from Poland participate in ARIES – these are Warsaw University of Technology and Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology. ARIES is a topical continuation of the previous infrastructural accelerator projects realized uninterruptedly since 2003 – FP6 CARE – Coordinated Accelerator Research in Europe and FP7 TIARA – Test Infrastructure and Accelerator Research Area, EuCARD – European Coordination for Accelerator Research and Development, and EuCARD2. The article is simultaneously a part of a series of papers concerning the participation of Polish doctoral students and young researchers, especially from the Warsaw University of Technology, in large European and world experiments of the discovery class, including building large research infrastructures like: FLASH and EXFEL, ESS, ITER and DEMO, IFMIF, but also satellites built by the ESA, etc. ARIES embraces, among others, the following subjects: energy efficiency and management, cost lowering, miniaturization and ultra-high field gradients, promotion innovation, industrial applications, societal implications, new materials and components, new methods of particles acceleration including laser-plasmaparticles interaction, and building new generations of systems.

Purpose: To propose a framework for choosing a project management approach for student research projects, taking into account the individual objectives of the advisor and the student, their personalities, the project type, and its environment. The proposed approach should increase the success rate of student research projects. Design/methodology/approach: Student research projects are characterized, and the relevant literature is reviewed. The theory concerning recent project management developments that could be potentially useful for student research projects is presented. A case study is analyzed. On the basis of the case study and the literature findings, a conceptual framework for the selection of a student research project management approach is proposed. Findings: It was found that student research projects, although apparently nonproblematic, need a conscious, individualized, situation-based selection of project management approach in order to assure a high success rate, according to the individual success understanding of project stakeholders. Research limitations/implications: The proposed framework is a conceptual one. It was developed on the basis of theory and under consideration of student research projects in one area and homogenous culture. Further research is needed to add new aspects to the approach, expand it to other research areas and cultures, and validate its usefulness in practice. Practical implications: Higher education institutions should promote project management knowledge among teachers and students, and conscious decision-making on the way student research projects will be performed. They should elaborate tailor-made frameworks for student research project management. Social implications: Student research projects, if managed improperly, may cause students and advisors dissatisfaction and stress. The approach we propose may, in the long term, increase the quality of life of students and advisors. Originality/value: The framework supporting the conscious selection of the way student research projects are managed, comprising recent developments in project management and taking into account the specific features and environment of each individual project, is an original contribution of the paper. It is addressed both to student project advisors and students themselves, as well as the managers of higher educational institutions.

This paper presents the research results on declarative ship domains in restricted areas. The research was conducted for vessels of different sizes and speed relations. In order to determine the declarative ship domain, data were collected in the form of questionnaires. The influence of ship length and speed on the size and shape of its domain were analyzed. The detailed processes of data development and further approximation are shown. Declarative domains for ships of different sizes and speed relations are compared. As a result of the research, a mathematical model of a declarative ship domain showing the elliptical shape of the domain is presented. The intermediate and summary research results are presented and conclusions drawn.

The use of computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) for the organization and analysis of qualitative data has been a hotly debated topic among qualitative researchers since the inception of the technology in the 1980s (Smith & Hesse-Biber, 1996; and Bong, 2002). Proponents of the software claim that QDAS can help strengthen the validity, reliability, and accuracy of data analysis, whereas critics have cautioned that the use of such software distances the researchers from the data and attempts to make the data objective (Saldaña, 2013). The debates surrounding the use of qualitative software have contributed to a lack of student training in academic settings. Consequently, few studies have examined the student experience and decision-making process regarding the use of QDAS in the university setting (Paulus, Woods, Atkins, & Mackin, 2015). Using reflective response data collected from participants of a beginner qualitative coding workshop, this paper adds to the limited literature on student experiences using QDAS by examining gender differences in how participants critically reflected on their first experience using QDAS and examines the likelihood that participants would use QDAS in their future work. Findings from this study indicate that participants who used QDAS for the first time perceived that there are more potential benefits to using QDAS versus manual coding. Gender differences were present with female participants strongly believing that the software would allow them to be more effective and efficient researchers, and male participants believing that they would be better able to gain deeper insights into their data.

This qualitative research study takes a closer look at developing competent researchers and thus buildingresearch capacity within Europe. The rapidly changing research environment driven by globalisation,internationalization, technological advancements, and the use of innovative methodologiesimpacts how research is designed, conducted, and reported on. We argue that the current complexresearch environment calls for globally competent researchers able to engage in research projects andresearch communities across disciplines and across geographic borders. However, there is scarceempirical evidence about research knowledge and competencies which global researchers need toconduct quality research. Relevant literature is also almost silent on what kind of educational opportunitieswithin higher education institutions allow graduate students to acquire these competencies.To address the existing gap in the literature, this article brings perspectives of twenty-three novice andexperienced scholars from ten European countries. The findings showcase a spectrum of competenciesrequired by globally competent researchers as well as opportunities and challenges associated withthe acquisition of these competencies. According to the respondents, efforts need to be maximized tobuild research capacity via emerging talents. This implies paying close attention to the research learningspaces, practices, and polices where future globally competent researchers can be nurtured andshaped. Considering the small sample size of participants, the findings are not meant to be conclusivebut rather informative in nature for those involved in research.

The historical experience of forming the national model of research and research pedagogical staff of higher qualification training in 1919-1929 is enlightened in the article. It differed from Russian one in field scheme and structure, had its own managerial vertical. The historical and educational analysis of the problem under research is made on the basis of systems and structural, historiographical, cultural, historical reconstruction of knowledge, historical and national, historical and educational approaches. Main trends influencing specialists training through aspirantura (post graduate studies) in the socio political sphere, higher education, in the sphere of scientific activities, training and attestation of research and research pedagogical staff of higher qualification are grounded.

The article emphasizes the theoretical and methodological significance of such territorial brands research which take into account multidimensional links between the theory of society and the theory of culture. Such a perspective of research allows for greater integration of methodologies of various social and humanistic sciences, especially those that positively evaluate the binding of quantitative research methodologies to the methodology of qualitative research. This type of methodological integration should fit to the approaches to local borderland communities which emphasize their subjectivity and agency. The article postulates the research’s attitude which leads to building not only the brand’s construction but – similarly to the culture of memory – the brand culture. On the other hand, the research of the culture of brand engages in a critical analysis of imaginaries of capitalism in the local communities of late modernity.

In this article, the authors present the geometry and measurements of the properties of an acoustic metamaterial with a structure composed of multiple concentric rings. CAD models of the structure were developed and subsequently used in numerical studies, which included the study of resonant frequencies using the Lanczos method and an analysis of sound pressure level distribution under plane wave excitation using the finite element method. Subsequently, experimental tests were carried out on models with the same geometry produced with three different materials (PLA, PET-G, and FLEX) using a fused deposition modeling 3D printing technique. These tests included: determining insertion loss for a single model based on tests using the measurement window of a reverberation chamber and determining transmission loss through tests in a semi-anechoic chamber. Sound wave resonance was obtained for frequencies ranging from 1700 to 6000 Hz. Notably, the experimental studies were carried out for the same structure for which numerical tests were conducted. The physical models of a metamaterial were manufactured using three different readily available 3D printing materials. The results of laboratory tests confirm that the created acoustic metamaterial consisting of multi-ring structures reduces noise in medium and high frequencies.

W artykule opisano historię 50 lat badań rozruszników wiroprądowych prowadzonych na Wydziale Elektrycznym Politechniki Wrocławskiej. Przedstawiono opisy budowy opracowanych rozruszników wiroprądowych. Przedstawiono sylwetki głównych uczestników zespołu badawczego rozruszników wiroprądowych i podano tematykę prowadzonych przez nich prac badawczych. Wyszczególniono najważniejsze osiągnięcia badawcze i wdrożeniowe zespołu badawczego.
The article describes the history of 50 years of research on eddy current starters conducted at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology. Descriptions of the construction of the developed eddycurrent starters are presented. The significant advantages of eddy current starters are: simple structure, small dimensions, low production costs, high operational reliability, no moving parts and no coolant, no need for service and maintenance. The eddy-current starters can be operated as the rotor starters at the connection to the slip-ring induction motor or as the stator starters at connection to the stator terminals of squirrel-cage induction motor or to the armature terminals of synchronous motor. As a result, the advantageous stepless waveforms of the starting torque of the motor are obtained and the value of the starting current of the motor is reduced. The composition of research team for studies of eddy-current starters was presented. The profiles of the main participants of the research team were described and the topics of their research were given. The developed Ph.D. thesis, scientific articles, technical reports and patents were mentioned. The most important industrial implementations of eddy-currents are listed and discussed.

This article is a proposal of identity research through its process and narrative character. As a starting point I present a definition of identity understood as the whole life process of finding identification. Next I present my own model of auto/biography-narrative research inspired by hermeneutic and phenomenological traditions of thinking about experiencing reality. I treat auto/biography-narrative research as a means of exploratory conduct, based on the narrator’s biography data, also considering the researcher’s autobiographical thought. In the final part of the article I focus on showing the narrative structure of identity and autobiography. I emphasise this relation in definitions qualifying autobiography as written life narration and identity as a narration of autobiography.

The article is a form of reflection upon the research subject, the research methods and the aim of research on social movements and political thought. The author of the article suggests that in the research being carried out one should use methods characteristic of other scientific disciplines and the terms used in other sciences, for example in medicine, cognitive science or sociology. Replying to the question of the aim of research, the author explains that science is to serve the cognition and understanding of the world. Science is not supposed to be an art cultivated by a small circle of scholars in order not to contribute to the degeneration of the social system.

EU Defence Ministers have adopted a joint Strategy on Defence Research & Technology (R&T) that includes a 2 % goal for defence R&T expenditure. Th is paper discusses the feasibility of such a goal for a small country, including the motivations for undertaking defence R&T work in small countries, and asks are they different from the large countries? New and improved weapons systems that create a technological advantage in the battlefield are grounded on research in technology. However, as capability models demonstrate, there are also other aspects of military capability than the materiel which can therefore be a topic for research. Through reviewing a selection of strategy documents from large and small European countries, the fact that only large countries have financial possibilities for major weapons system development and production is highlighted, while in small countries, this link from R&T through development to production and operation is broken. Both defence research and defence industrial base figures support this view. Small countries may still have a number of other reasons to engage in R&T in either technology or other areas, but these appear not to be able to sufficiently motivate R&T expenditure even close to the 2% level.

Although the second half of the 20th century is the period of development of economic geography in Poland, in the first post-war decades geography of construction did not function as a separate geographical subdivision. More significant development of spatial research in this field was brought about a quarter of a century ago. In the article devoted to the problems of geography of construction in Poland, the subject scope, main directions of research and the achievements of this sub-discipline are discussed. Geography of construction is a branch of economic geography, which examines spatial aspects of construction and assembly ‘production’, with special attention to spatial organisation of investment processes, as well as conditions and effects of location and spatial structure of construction investments. The literature review allows for isolating the main directions, among which the following can be listed: conditions for the development of construction of different functions, also in the context of the accompanying phenomena (e.g. in the social sphere), location factors and effects of construction investments, as well as research devoted to the spatial structure of construction projects and their links with geographical environment. Research topics of geography of construction are part of the spatial processes within the interests of other geographic sub-disciplines, as well as of related social, economic and even technical disciplines. The achievements of Polish geography of construction of the last quarter of a century are important from the point of view of a better recognition of the conditions and course of the socio-economic transformation in Poland in different contexts and different spatial scales.

The text presents the course and conclusions of the discussion on evaluation of research in social sciences and humanities. The results of social sciences and humanities research can, on the one hand, be of significant local importance, and, on the other, require an appropriate international context. These conflicting trends are difficult to balance. A further difficulty is the attempt to reduce the evaluation of research results in social sciences and humanities to the effects of publication in ranking journals. This trend gives rise to many pathological phenomena (related, for example, to the increase in the cost of publication in journals and other ranked publications). The dominance of the ranking system of journals within the framework of financing scientific disciplines has negative impacts on aspects of academic activity beyond the publication of research results. Teaching activities and university relations with the wider world may suffer. In the course of the discussion an attempt is made to respond to these threats.
W tekście przedstawiono przebieg oraz wnioski z dyskusji dotyczącej sposobów ewaluacji badań naukowych w naukach społecznych i humanistycznych. Wyniki badań w naukach społecznych i humanistycznych z jednej strony mogą mieć istotne znaczenie lokalne, a z drugiej wymagają odpowiedniego kontekstu międzynarodowego. Te kolidujące tendencje trudne są do pogodzenia. Kolejna trudność polega na próbie sprowadzenia oceny wyników badań naukowych w naukach społecznych i humanistycznych do efektów publikacji w czasopismach punktowanych. Trend ten powoduje powstanie wielu zjawisk patologicznych (związanych przykładowo ze wzrostem kosztów publikacji w czasopismach punktowanych). Dominacja systemu oceny punktowej czasopism w ramach finansowania nauki wpływa z kolei negatywnie na inne aspekty działalności akademickiej niż publikacja wyników badań. Ucierpieć może działalność dydaktyczna oraz kontakty uczelni ze światem zewnętrznym. W toku dyskusji próbowano odpowiedzieć na powyższe zagrożenia.
