Opis:: The situation of Christians in Iraq and Syria has been problematic for many years. The article first deals with the issues of social tensions caused by religious diversity. The repercussions of these conflicts are presented, with an emphasis on the problems of immigration from regions affected by the war. The article then describes the forms of aid provided in Iraq and Syria, with an emphasis on medical and humanitarian aid. The work also includes reports from these places and outlines the problems of Christian clergy in persecuted communities.

Opis:: This paper suggests how translation processes can be integrated in qualitative interviews in multi-lingual research fields. While theoretical and methodological problems of language and translation have been thoroughly reflected upon from different perspectives in qualitative research, the literature provides little guidance for the practical gathering and handling of multi-lingual material. As a contribution to filling this gap, the paper suggests a systematic, comparative combination of oral and written translations of interviews, which would serve both a diagnostic and a heuristic function. Based on an ethnographic study in Zambian refugee camps and conceptual distinctions between schemes of translation, I identify, in oral translations, five forms of translator’s decision to depart from the literal wording in favor of a pragmatic translation intended to aid continuation of the conversation. As an important element of the suggested procedure, the comparison of the translation modes is systematically discussed with the translating research assistant, leading not only to reflection on further translation practices, but, most importantly, to an awareness of important substantial aspects of the material. This heuristic function of the comparative combination of translation modes thus leads to an enhancement of the research process.

Opis:: The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to the often phenomenon of refugees resorted to violence. Refugee-warriors who defy the stereotype of passive inmate refugee camps. The reason for their appearance are always the bad conditions in the camps or even the very existence of them, where the so-called culture of resistance and new identity of nations in exile born. Therefore, international actions for security should also cover general change in the refugee protection policy. Permissions to self settle should definitely replace the policy of concentration of refugees in the camps.

Opis:: The aim of the article is to outline the specifics of places and spaces – refugee camps and centers, where children constitute the majority. Through reference to activities implemented there and oriented towards children, we discuss their problematic character connected with e.g. the absence of participatory, rights-based approach (art. 12 CRC) that serves children’s emancipation and equality. In the second part of the article, we propose the implementation of Janusz Korczak’s methods – solutions for participatory work with children (“underprivileged” groups), which seem both timeless and universal. An ethical and contextual adaptation or inspiration based on Korczak’s methods in work designed for backgrounds connected with children remaining in closed and semi-closed systems, provides a chance for children’s basic participation in decision-making in matters that concern their lives. At the same time, it is an opportunity to learn children’s opinions and an expression of respect for the child as a per-son who functions here and now, in the place and space of his or her temporary stay – a refugee camp, where an international protection system for children and adults is far from effective.

Opis:: W artykule podjęto próbę analizy wspomnień Danuty Ireny Bieńkowskiej, które jako nastolatka napisała w Iranie (od października 1942 r. do połowy stycznia 1944 r.), gdzie przebywała z matką w obozach dla deportowanych z Rosji. Jej wspomnienia, tworząc ogólny obraz warunków i atmosfery w obozach w Teheranie i Ahwaz, akcentują ważne dla pisarki kwestie - zaangażowanie w naukę, harcerstwo, życie „społeczne i emocjonalne”. Juwenalia Bieńkowskiej, mające znaczenie dokumentu historycznego, w istotny sposób uzupełniają obraz tego mniej znanego poety emigracyjnego.
The paper attempts to describe the memoir of Danuta Irena Bieńkowska, which she wrote as a teenager in Iran (from October 1942 to the middle of January 1944), where she stayed with her mother in camps for the deported from Russia. Herwritings, by creating a general image of conditions and atmosphere in the camps in Teheran and Ahwaz, emphasise issues important to the writer – involvement in science, scouting, “social and emotional” life. Bieńkowksa’s juvenilia, having the importance of a historical document, complement significantly the image of this lesser-known emigrant poet.

Opis:: Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie sytuacji kobiet w kalifacie ISIS i w strukturach Państwa Islamskiego przez pryzmat arabskojęzycznych doniesień medialnych opublikowanych na stronach internetowych serwisów informacyjnych. W artykule autorka przedstawia obraz kobiet w Państwie Islamskim ukazany w arabskich oraz zachodnich mediach. O ile część z nich przypisuje kobietom marginalne role gospodyń domowych, matek i żon, i w ten sposób przedstawia ich rzeczywistość w tym kalifacie, o tyle inne doniesienia skupiają się na aktywnym zaangażowaniu kobiet w działalność organizacji. Najwięcej przywołanych artykułów pochodzi z 2019 r. Wynika to z tego, że wraz z upadkiem kalifatu ISIS wiele mediów zaczęło dokonywać rozliczeń i podsumowań działalności terrorystycznej Państwa Islamskiego.
The aim of this article is to present the situation of women in the caliphate and in the structures of ISIS (the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, ar. Ad-Dawla al-Islāmiyya fῑal-’Irāq wa aš-Šām) through the prism of Arabic-language media reports published on websites information services. In the article, the author presents the media image of women in ISIS showed by the Arabic and Western media. While some of them assign marginal roles to women as housewives, mothers and wives, and thus present their reality in this caliphate, there are also other media reports focusing on the active involvement of women in the organization’s activities. Most of the articles are from 2019. This is due to the fact that with the fall of the caliphate, many media began to make some kind of accounts and summaries of the activities of the terrorist organization ISIS.

Opis:: Wieloaspektowa złożoność współczesnego świata uniemożliwia, na podstawie licznych przesłanek, wyprowadzenie generalnej syntezy, na bazie której możliwe było by profilowanie rzeczywistości w kierunku zapewnienia względnie całkowitego bezpieczeństwa globalnego, regionalnego, wewnątrzpaństwowego i personalnego. W związku z tym nie można wykluczyć, że w przyszłości, podobnie jak obecnie, będą się pojawiać militarne sytuacje kryzysowe "generujące" znaczną liczbę uchodźców oczekujących wsparcia humanitarnego. Autorzy w artykule przedstawili ewolucję współczesnych zagrożeń o naturze militarnej i scharakteryzowali w tym kontekście działania pokojowe i humanitarne, które mogą być podejmowane przez międzynarodowe siły zbrojne z mandatu uprawnionych organizacji. W dalszej części artykułu autorzy dokonali analizy dostępnego materiału analitycznego poświęconego skali uchodźstwa w militarnych sytuacjach kryzysowych. Następnie na podstawie zebranych danych przedstawiono koncepcję przestrzenno-funkcjonalną obozu dla uchodźców. Ostatnia część artykułu to autorski zarys klastrowej koncepcji organizacji strefy humanitarnej dla uchodźców w militarnej sytuacji kryzysowej o znacznym zasięgu. Wykazano także potencjalne zalety zaproponowanego podejścia klastrowego do rozwiązania problemu humanitarnego uchodźców.
Nowadays it is not possible to assume that one can ensure global, regional and personal security. The geopolitical situation is changing all the time. Moreover, one cannot exclude the fact that in the future military crisis situations will appear generating a significant number of refugees. Those refugees will expect humanitarian aid. In the initial part of this article, the authors describe and characterize peaceful and humanitarian actions carried out by international military forces. Next, the authors analyze the available data connected with the scale of refugee problem during selected military crisis situations. Based on the data collected, the authors introduce the functional concept of a refugee camp. Finally, the authors of this article outline the cluster concept of humanitarian zone organization for refugees in future military crisis situations. This proposed method may allow one to better overcome the refugee problem in the future. What is more, the authors mention a few advantages of this concept as an attempt to solve the humanitarian problem of refugees.

Opis:: The article presents the situation of the child refugees in the refugee camps in the Sub-Saharan Africa. Children in this region are strongly affected by the armed conflicts. Furthermore, their situation does not improve after acceptance to the refugee camps. Violence, sexual harassment, complex humanitarian emergency resulting in lack of the basic facilities are encountered by children in the camps on the daily basis. It is estimated that in the Dadaab refugee complex, children represent 70% of the overall camp population. Many of the child refugees in the camps in the Sub-Saharan Africa suffer not only from malnutrition and contagious diseases, but also PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) caused by their traumatic experiences during the armed conflict as well as their stay in the camps. One should also remember that child refugees in the refugee camps in the Horn of Africa are also the factor strongly destabilizing region as unaccompanied children can become potential recruitment source for the asymmetric organizations active in this part of the continent.
