According to the theory of high refractive index of metamaterials, a composite structure of metal dielectric grating was designed to achieve high refractive index in infrared band. Based on the S-parameter inversion algorithm, we extracted the effective permittivity, the effective permeability, and the effective refractive index of the designed metamaterial. By changing the geometric parameters of the composite grating metamaterial structure, the effective refractive index of the designed metamaterial reaches more than 8.0 at the infrared resonance frequency. This is a high refractive index that many natural materials cannot achieve. It is noteworthy that the metamaterial structure has obvious polarization sensitivity. The metamaterial structure has both high refractive index and wideband zero refractive index properties when different polarized light is incident. At the same time, we further investigate the influence of metamaterial geometric parameters on the effective refractive index of metamaterials. Also, we propose a double grating metamaterial structure to obtain more degrees of freedom of metamaterial on the effective refractive index.

We investigate the evanescent field of a microfiber wrapped by colloidal crystals. The microfiber has the diameter of about 1 μm that is drawn from a single-mode fiber with an alcohol lamp. The colloidal spheres are further attached to the microfiber through thermal evaporation, then they self-assemble to crystal-like structures. The 400 nm, 590 nm, and 710 nm-diameter SiO2 colloidal spheres are used, respectively. The spectral responses are studied theoretically and experimentally, and the results agree with each other. It is revealed that the evanescent field of a microfiber could be modulated by the photonic band-gap of colloidal crystals. This characteristic is very useful in refractive index sensing for liquids.

Opis:
The explicit solution to the diffraction problem on a set of small particles, supplemented into homogeneous material, is used for modeling the materials with the desired refractive index. The consideration concerns to the case of acoustic scalar scattering and the solution to initial scattering problem is built using an asymptotic approach. The closed form solution is reduced for the scattering problem. This lets an explicit formula for the refractive index of the resulting inhomogeneous material to be obtained. The numerical calculations show the possibility of getting the specific values of refractive index including its negative values.

A stable composition (against crystallization) of germanate glass doped with Yb3+ for mid-infrared laser applications is presented. Broad emission spectrum of Yb3+ was obtained for the fabricated glass. Laser operation was demonstrated in 13 mm long waveguide written in the glass using a femtosecond laser operating at 524 nm center wavelength sending 250 fs ultrashort pulses. The resulting CW laser operated at 1.04 μm in the fundamental mode of the waveguide. The propagation loss through the waveguide was 0.6 dB/cm at 1550 nm for 45 μm diameter of the modified structure. The mode analysis of the developed waveguide structure is also presented in COMSOL Multiphysics to study the electric field distribution through different modes of propagation in the waveguide and the confinement loss associated to them.

Corresponding author: In this paper, the design and testing of a five-wavelength laser microrefractometer are presented. Five semiconductor lasers are used for the spectral region of 405–1320 nm. The presented device is based on the critical angle method. In this case, the critical angle of total internal reflection is determined with the help of a CCD camera detecting the disappearance of the diffraction pattern, created by a metal diffraction grating. The samples of a thin liquid layer (< 10 μm) are placed between a flint-glass prism and a chromium diffraction grating. The refractive indices of two matching liquid products of Cargille Laboratories are investigated for the approbation of the presented device. The measured values of the refractive indices are used for the dispersion curves construction. The obtained values of the refractive indices are compared with the catalog data given by the manufacturer.

The goal of this work was to investigate the influence of rare earth ions such as Tm3+, Yb3+ on physico-chemical properies of tellurite glass from the TeO2-WO3-PbO-PbF2-Na2O system. The thermal characteristic of tellurite glass Tm3+, Yb3+ doped have been presented. The effect of the glass crystallization on thermal stability of the glass and crystallizing phases formed upon heat treatment were investigated by DTA/DSC/, XRD methods. The spectral dependence of ellipsometric angles of the tellurite glass samples, have been studied. The influence of ions of rare earth elements, i.e. Tm 3+ and Yb3+, onto changes of refractive index of glass P1 (without RE admixture) were examined. The optical measurements were conducted on Woollam M2000 spectroscopic ellipsometer, in spectral range of 190–1700 nm.

Opis:
A method for probing refractive index changes in photorefractive crystals using an interferometric technique and digital image processing was proposed. Based on equal thickness interference in LiNbO3 crystal and Fourier transform profilometry, we obtained phase value changes in interferograms induced by a photorefractive effect, and further calculated refractive index changes. The maximal values for extraordinary light (e-light) and ordinary light (o-light) are 6.6×10–4 and 1.2×10–4, respectively.

The influence of the strain on the optical properties of Si-SiO2 system has been investigated by spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), interferometry and weighing methods. Subtle changes of densification (compaction degree) in silicon dioxide layers on silicon substrates have been determined by weight technique (relying on measurements of the silicon dioxide layer mass and calculations of the volume). Elastic stress in the oxide layers has been measured by Fizeau fringes image analysis method. A comparison is made between the density of the silicon dioxide (r) and the results of calculations made using r = f = (n) relations (where n is the refractive index) given in the literature.

Effect of viscosity of a liquid on the far-field diffraction pattern due to spatial self-phase modulation is investigated. Chlorophyll extract in acetone at different concentrations is used as the low viscous nonlinear samples and commercial engine oils, synthetic and natural. It is also used as high viscous media. In the case of chlorophyll solution, the self-induced diffraction ring pattern in the far-field is a series of circular rings at the beginning; but later it is transformed to half circular symmetry. But for the high viscous engine oils we have observed circular fringes and there is no time dependent structural variation in the pattern. The coefficient of the intensity dependent nonlinear refractive index for all the liquid samples is evaluated.

In this paper, we will discuss the Goos–Hänchen shifts properties of reflected and transmitted light beams from the cavity with four-level InGaN/GaN quantum dots nanostructure. We find that the Goos–Hänchen shifts properties of reflected and transmitted light beams can be controlled via adjusting the refractive index of four-level quantum dot nanostructure. Here, we show that by tunable infrared laser field the negative refraction index can be possible at certain values of probe frequency. Therefore, the large Goos–Hänchen shifts for reflected and transmitted light beams are possible for negative refractive index condition.

A series of fluorotellurite glasses based on 70TeO2–5MxOy–10P2O5–10ZnO–5PbF2 in mol%, where MxOy = (WO3, Nb2O5) doped with 2400 ppm of Er2O3 have been prepared by the conventional melt quenching method. The influence of modifiers on thermal and optical properties of glasses has been analyzed. Thermal characteristics of glasses like the glass transition temperature Tg, the temperature for the crystallization onset Tx, the maximum crystallization temperature Tc, and the thermal stability parameter were determined by the DSC method. The ellipsometric data have provided Sellmeier-type dispersion relations of the refractive index of the investigated glasses. The optical parameters are used to calculate the molar refractivity, molar polarizability, oxide ion polarizability, molar cation polarizability, and a number of polarizable atoms per unit volume for every glass composition in order to interpret the refractive index of these glasses.

We propose a design of series-connected one-dimensional photonic crystal nanofiber cavity sensor (1-D PC-NCS) and one-dimensional photonic crystal nanofiber bandgap filter (1-D PC-NBF). The proposed structure can get a single air mode for refractive index sensing with its extinction ratio of 58.64 dB. It filters out the high order mode and reduces the interaction between signals. By 3D FDTD, the calculated sensitivity is 848.18 nm/RIU (RIU – refractive index unit). Compared with general silicon on-chip nanobeam cavity, the sensitivity is increased by eight times. The additional 1-D PC-NBF will not change the sensitivity and the position of the resonance wavelength. Therefore, the new design we propose addresses the issue of crosstalk, and can be applied to ultra-high sensitivity index-based gas sensing and biosensing without the need for complicated coupling systems.

The transmission spectra of one dimensional metallic photonic crystal containing defects are studied using a transfer matrix method. We consider silver as a defect layer with a refractive index dependent on wavelength and temperature simultaneously. Since the loss factor of silver is the function of temperature, we should find a structure that has sharp transmission peaks to model a filter. We present the structure with a coupled defect. It is found that the number of transmission resonant peaks is equal to the number of coupled defects and they are tunable with temperature and incident angle.

In this paper we show the results of a study of the effects of high-temperature stress annealing in nitrogen on the refraction index of SiO2 layers and electrical properties in metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) devices. We have experimentally characterized the dependence of the reduced effective contact potential difference (ECPD), the effective oxide charge density (Neff), and the mid-gap interface trap density (Dit) on the annealing conditions. Subsequently, we have correlated such properties with the dependence of the refraction index and oxide stress on the annealing conditions and silicon dioxide thickness. Also, the dependence of mechanical stress in the Si-SiO2 system on the oxidation and annealing conditions has been experimentally determined. We consider the contributions of the thermal-relaxation and nitrogen incorporation processes in determining changes in the SiO2 layer refractive index and the electrical properties with annealing time. This description is consistent with other annealing studies carried out in argon, where only the thermal relaxation process is present.

The nonlinear optical properties of nematic liquid crystal material have been studied at different concentrations using Z-Scan technique. Experiments are performed using continuous wave (CW) diode solid state laser at 473 nm wavelength and 20 mW power. The nonlinear absorption coefficient β is calculated using open aperture Z-Scan data, while its nonlinear refractive index n2 is measured using the closed aperture Z-Scan data. In this work, six concentrations were prepared for (Di-Cinnamylidene Benzidine), these concentrations were (9×10-5, 8×10-5, 7×10-5, 6×10-5, 5× 10-5 and 4×10-5)M. The optical absorption and transmission spectra for these concentrations were measured by using UV-VIS spectrophotometer. Our results show that the nonlinearity are changed significantly with concentrations, in addition, the optical limiting behavior has been studied. The results confirmed the capability of the sample to be used as optical limiter device.
