Opis:
The author of the article stresses that what constitutes the purpose of humanistic education is showing the world from different perspectives and ambiguity as its inherent ingredient, which should be approached as both didactic and axiological challenge (especially in the light of concept of young people’s civic education). In this context he proposes to have a glance at cultural microcosm (of today’s Israel) described by Paweł Smoleński in his book published in 2019 entitled Wnuki Jozuego [Joshua’s Grandchildren]. The Polish author of reportages shows in the said book how - based on the example of Jewish Israeli settlers in the West Bank - dealing with religious, ethnic, and cultural diversity and experiencing them on the daily basis, paves the way for radical views and, consequently, for unifying the past, present, and the future. Many among Smoleński’s interlocutors/interviewees, however, touch upon the need for open dialogue, accepting otherness, and various outlooks on the most burning issues. Therefore, the story thus told may be treated as a warning against believing in only one righteous truth, as well as against the said belief’s negative influence on the sphere of public exchange of thoughts.

Sociological interpretations of the processes of “radicalization” should take into account the complex and interdisciplinary nature of the phenomenon of “radicalism” itself. This article illustrates some of the intricacies involved here. Radicalism is an intellectual and philosophical attitude that reaches the roots [radix] of things, and thus is supposed to enable a more thorough understanding and transformation of reality. In this form, radicalism was for some the embodiment of humanism and progressiveness, for others it led to “spiritual intoxication.” Still others saw in it a neutral attitude of quasi-religious prophetism. In psychological interpretations, radicalism had its roots in the depths of the human psyche. It was interpreted as an expression of infantile emotionality, resentment or neurasthenia, it was associated with repressed needs, madness, conspiracy thinking or hatred. Interpreted as a culturally and historically relative phenomenon, radicalism reflects the power of hegemonic ideas and the phenomenon of specific public spheres. From this perspective, it has been interpreted as an expression of the democratic culture of narcissistic individualism, the progress of liberal democracies, left-wing revolutionary movements and reactionary right-wing movements, as well as a strictly modern phenomenon. As a social phenomenon, radicalism has been interpreted in numerous ways, especially in the sociology of social movements. An original contribution to its understanding was made by the ahistorical anthropology of the Polish philosopher Grażyna Żurkowska, whose concept is discussed in the main part of this article.

Democratic states use these tools to protect democratic values, while the Russian Federation also uses them to suppress political opposition and as a part of a larger system of armed struggle against Ukraine. Regardless of the political regime, each country has a ‘self-defence’ structure which ensures the stability of the system.

The article discusses the extent to which the three multicultural learning strategies implemented to promote multiculturalism differ and how the initiatives takes into account religious differences and Islam. Methodologically, the article focuses on thematic content analysis of the three multicultural education projects. The thematic content analysis makes it possible to study what is being discussed in the multicultural context and how it is being interpreted through these ideas and concepts. The aim of these school projects is to create a common language environment and a new (well-integrated) national identity. Based on the Estonian super-secular society (less than 19% Estonians considered themselves to be a part of some congregation or religious), the peculiarities of religion orientation are not so much taken into account in these multicultural learning strategies and Islam occurs in connection with radicalism.

The symbolic imaginary of counterculture was fostered by dissent towards the cultural roots of the Western world, by a challenge to traditional norms, values and symbols, and by the rejection of historical identity and national sovereignty. This article aims to discuss some of the aftermaths of the counterculture of the 1960s as resulting from the transformations of its symbolic imaginary. The transformation of the symbolic imaginary of the counterculture is reflected in specific historical changes which had a profound impact on social relations, manners of perceiving or experiencing the world, and the shape of the public sphere within modern society. The dissent of the 1960s is framed in terms of its ability to take over and impose symbolic power, along with transformations of a given cultural model, a process which has roots in the concept of historicity and a new symbolic universe. Special attention is given to the institutionalization of multiculturalism, one of the most important outcomes of the transformation of the symbolic imaginary of counterculture and the normalization of countercultural radicalism. The aftermaths of the radicalism of the 1960s, when presented against the background of the transformation of the symbolic imaginary, underscore a ubiquitous and profound transformation of the entire culture and ideological dynamics in Western societies.

Opis:
Immigration from German-speaking countries to the United States rose dramatically after the mid-1840s, especially after the failed revolution of 1848-49. By the outbreak of the Civil War close to one million Germans had settled especially in Midwestern territories and states. The group contributed increasingly to the numbers of eligible voters, since Midwestern states, hoping to attract new settlers, liberalized their naturalization laws which allowed immigrants to vote even after receiving their “first papers,” i.e. after applying for naturalization as early as twelve months after their arrival in the new country. The votes of both groups were increasingly sought by the political parties. While the immigrant vote overwhelmingly favored the Democratic Party, because it offered protection and patronage in the face of nativist sentiments, the new Republican Party also made inroads into the German vote. The article points to the reasons for involvement of German radicals in antebellum politics and immigrants’ activity in the Republican Party despite apparent ideological and generational differences. The issue that helped unite liberals, radicals, and workers in this decade, was slavery and the fight for the abolition of this institution: whether in the media, or the political, and later, the military battleground.

With the populist tide on the rise, comparisons of contemporary right-wing governments to fascist regimes are increasingly common. The rise of the populist right-wing politics has created a number of reactions, using either new or established forms of political resistance. One of such examples is the anti-fascist movement whose strength grows in many national contexts. The recently observed political swing to the right results also in a radicalization of politics. Radical actors intersect and cooperate with moderate ones, influence one another and bring new ideas and repertoires of contention to the streets and into mainstream politics. This trend can be observed in Poland where the 2015 elections (presidential and parliamentary) resulted in the radicalization of the mainstream discourse. This article focuses on the case study of the broadly understood anti-racist movement in Poland that has recently had to remodel itself to face new challenges – in particular the institutionalization of xenophobic rhetoric and the growth of the far-right sector – and has undergone substantial changes in general. The article presents the internal radical- moderate dynamics within the specific context of the anti-fascist movement in Poland. In particular, it explores the role of changes in political opportunity structures for the reinvigoration of the anti-fascist movement in Poland, radicalization in some of its sectors, and change in its priorities and focus.

Jeszcze inny rodzaj radykalizmu w architekturze przedstawił Lebbeus Woods. Inny wariant architektury radykalnej to współczesne awangardowe realizacje. Metody badawcze obejmują wieloletnie studia nad dorobkiem współczesnej architektury, w rezultacie których dokonano analizy i syntezy wybranych zagadnień pozwalająca na uszczegółowioną prezentację wyników badań.
The aim of the paper is to recall several phenomena in the 20th - century architecture. One can evoke the avant– garde achievements of the first half of the century and projects whose intention was to radically discard the past. Others refer to the phenomenon of creative changes in art in Italy at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s. Yet another kind of radicalism in architecture was presented by Woods. He created a series of drawings proposing the restoration of places destroyed by war. His unreal creations were intended as versions of radical reconstruction. Another variant of radical architecture are contemporary avant–garde realizations. Research methods include long–term studies on the achievements of modern architecture, as a result of which an analysis and synthesis of selected issues is carried out allowing a more detailed presentation.

Political radicalism as a threat to the reborn Republic of Poland. The interwar period in Poland was characterised by the occurrence of real threats to the internal security of the state, the source of which was radicalism and political extremism. It was both left-wing and right-wing radicalism. We should mention here communism supported by Bolshevik Russia, Ukrainian nationalism supported by unfavourable countries such as Germany or Czechoslovakia, and Polish right-wing radicals who sought to change the political system of the country but not to annihilate it. All these political trends may have contributed to the destabilization of the Second Republic, but reborn Poland managed to create an appropriate internal security system, which included the Political Police, and on the other hand, the Polish society, as the history of the Second Republic shows, was not seduced by the political extremes.

Radical movements of the Polish far-right consist, as elsewhere, mainly of young men. The strict gender binarism, the exaltation of men’s power, homosociality, brotherhood, physical strength and subordination of women are omnipresent among 'angry white men' everywhere, Poland included. However, these general characteristics have always its local variants, trajectories, and particularities. This article is an attempt to explain the phenomenon of Polish radical right movements in its local context: cultural, social, economic. The article focuses on ‘The March of Independence’ – a cyclical celebration for radical groups, which proliferates the discourses of far-right radical masculinity. In the first part, the author focuses on the social and economic background, worldview and ‘masculinist’ ideology of Polish' angry white men’ (Kimmel 2013). The second part focuses on the historical and cultural coding of their 'aggrieved entitlement' (Kimmel 2013). The third part of the essay draws on Steve's Garlick (Garlick 2016: 163−193) concept of ‘spectacular masculinity’. It analyzes how modern technology contributes to the construction of ‘spectacular’ masculinity among the participants of the march/members of radical groups.
Radykalne ruchy polskiej prawicy mają zasadniczo męski charakter i grupują wielu młodych mężczyzn. Przestrzeganie podziału ról płciowych, egzaltacja męską siłą, homospołeczność, braterstwo, fizyczna sprawność podporządkowanie kobiet jako rodzicielek i gospodyń domowych to powszechne wśród "wściekłych młodych mężczyzn" nastawienie tak globalne, jak i specyficznie polskiej. Ta uogólniona charakterystyka ma swoje lokalne warianty, trajektorie i osobliwości. Artykuł stanowi próbę wyjaśnienia fenomenu popularności polskich ruchów prawicowych w lokalnym kontekściez uwzględnieniem czynników społecznych, kulturowych i ekonomicznych. W pierwszej części przedstawiam społeczne i ekonomiczne tło procesu radykalizacji, odtwarzam poglądy i maskulinistyczną ideologię polskich "wściekłych mężczyzn". W drugiej części uwaga kieruje się ku kulturowemu i historycznemu kodowaniu "zawiedzionego poczucia uprzywilejowania" (Kimmel, 2013). Część trzecia sięga do koncepcji "męskości spektakularnej" (Garlick, 2016, 163 - 193) i analizuje sposób, w jaki nowoczesna technologia wpływa na konstruowanie męskości przez uczestników Marszów Niepodległości.

This study was focused on the increasingly widespread phenomenon of radicalism among government officials in Indonesia. The perspective adopted an evaluation of government legal policies designed to curtail the proliferation of radicalism through counter-radicalization, and deradicalization measures. These anti-radicalism policies were aimed to reintegrate government officials who had been influenced by radicalism, aligning their thinking, attitudes, and behaviour with the principles of the Indonesian Pancasila. Presently, the envisioned ideal conditions remain elusive. Therefore, this study adopted a normative approach to assessing the precision of the implementation of anti-radicalization and deradicalization policies, with a focus on comprehensive regulations and targeted methods. The proposed remedy involved a shift in legal policy, with greater emphasis placed on counter-radicalization efforts developed through a screening process that identified potential instances of radicalism in the cyber realm through early detection. Subsequently, these cases were directed to the legal process, with a deradicalization attempt, which emphasized an understanding of the ideology of Pancasila.

Power is a fundamental category in the field of political and security sciences. It occupies a key position in practically every theory of international relations. Some of the categories that describe power can be defined using similar terms, although there are also those that define similar categories in a completely different manner. This is what happens when you find similar definitions for terms such as ‘power, ‘strength’, ‘authority’, or ‘influence’. Identifying the factors that make up a state’s power is no less problematic. Even if some elements of power seem to be unchanged (military or economic factors) and important for all currents of the theory of international relations, the differences in their rank may be significant and crucial for understanding the differences between particular theoretical approaches. The aim of the article is to show both the fixed elements of individual theories (primarily realistic and liberal, but also radicalism and postmodernism) as well as the differences in defining the power of their individual representatives.

Secondly, the ideological background and motivations of the perpetrators were shown. It was possible to analyze the manifestos that the perpetrators left, and thus their way of thinking, their ideologies, and the purposes of organizing the attacks. Thirdly, issues related to the publicizing of the attacks by the perpetrators were shown. The goal of the article is to show that radical ideology of right-wing extremists (expressed in manifestos) leads to tragedies. In analyzed cases radical appointment of the perpetrators caused three deadly attacks. The article shows that the radical actions are preceded by radical speech, expressions, manifestos. The second goal is to pay attention to hate speech (also expressed in manifestos), which is just as dangerous as bullets or improvised explosive devices. The third goal is to show how the attackers used acts of terror to spread the ideologies to which they were devoted.

There is a strong conviction about social radicalism carrying serious threats to the public spere, similiar to all manifestations of extremism, fundamentalism and other extreme attitudes. Meanwhile, subject literature indicates how misleading such interpretations are and deviate from the complex nature of this phenomenon. Various examples of the concept of radicalism understood as philosophical, psychological and social predicament, reviewed in this article, should lead to a necessary revision of the dominant conventional interpretation of radicalism.

The 2015 immigration crisis became a driving force for movements and parties that negate the current political order, including those that do not conceal their xenophobic slogans and ideas. In retrospect, there are more and more signs that the decision to accept the uncontrolled refugee influx was more an expression of wishful thinking than a rational decision, taking into account the actual political situation. Thus, Europe finds itself in a dangerous situation with far-right movements on the one hand, and radical Islam on the other. Each of these formations legitimises its existence and methods of operation by the existence of the other side, trying to polarise society and create a situation that will somehow force citizens to opt for one of the two options. Paradoxically, Chancellor Merkel’s decision to admit immigrants significantly increased the risk of such a scenario, hence the perception of Islamic and right-wing extremism by the German authorities as posing an equal threat to state security. However, it was only the recent terrorist attacks in October and November 2020 in France and Germany that changed the political narrative.

Opis:
This article discusses the most recent publishing projects devoted to the history and intellectual accomplishments of the Polish cooperative movement before 1939. It illustrates the political dimension of the concept of cooperation, the need to deepen the research on the symbolic universe of the movement and the effect which defining the peripheral status of the Polish economy had on the development of the economic analyses of the Polish cooperators. The political philosophy of Polish cooperativism, created primarily by Edward Abramowski, in many respects exceeds the limitations characteristic for the classical modern ideologies of the political left-wing, thanks to which it inscribes in the process of ―inventing tradition‖ by the modern emancipation movements in Poland.

Powołanie zakonne jest darem dla całego Kościoła. Jest ono przedmiotem szczególnej troski poszczególnych papieży. Zarówno św. Jan Paweł II, jak i papież Franciszek otaczają osoby zakonne szczególnym szacunkiem. Niniejsze opracowanie stanowi próbę ukazania życia zakonnego w perspektywie powołania, radykalizmu i posłania w ujęciu Jana Pawła II i Franciszka.
Religious vocation is a gift to the whole Church. It is a matter of particular concern for popes. Both St. John Paul II and Pope Francis have a special respect towards religious people. This study is an attempt to show religious life with respect to vocation, radicalism and mission taking the teaching of John Paul II and Francis into account. The right direction of consecrated persons’ lives is determined by their thoughts. It is necessary here on the Earth to point out the eternal perspective.

The magnitude of the disaster of September 11, 2001 brought to bear a general recognition that terrorism is a global problem that required urgent attention. The response of the international community was a war on terror against murderous, oppressive, violent and hateful groups. Since then failed states have been considered as cradle and fertile grounds of terrorism, which threatens national as well as global security. This premise is based on the assertion that there is a direct link between failing states and international terrorism. However, the following text disputes this claim by using quantitative data and empirical research, and thus denies the whole concept of the war on terror leads by the USA and Great Britain.

Opis:
In the 2016 Lithuanian parliamentary election the established political parties suffered an unexpected and crippling defeat at the hand of the Lithuanian Peasant and Green Union (Lietuvos valstiečių ir žaliųjų sąjunga, LVŽS), a populist one-size-fits-all formation. The aim of this article is to identify and analyze major reasons of the populist victory in Lithuania in the context of global trend of trumpisation of politics. The traditional message of the establishment parties to take care of the economy, to advance foreign investment and improve business climate did not appeal to voters, while the LVŽS made a point of talking about issues people wanted to hear: the need to tackle social exclusion and poverty; to address the privileged position of big business; to fight endemic corruption; to deal with the underfunding of education and culture. The electoral message of the winner combines the hard left promise of radical change on socioeconomic issues and the far right conservative approach to identity politics, human rights, minority rights, gender equality, and refugees. The LVŽS did its best to look as an anti-establishment, anti-party politics force, a loose and wide amalgam of contrasting personalities and contradicting messages. At the same time, the major factor behind the ‘revolutionary’ victory for radical change seems to be the inability of the mainstream parties to sense the change of sentiment of the electorate and to address the growing grievances of the public. The Lithuanian anti-establishment revolt is being compared with Donald Trump’s victory in the US, Brexit in the UK, Poland after the last election in 2015, and Hungary under Victor Orban.

The village in Polesie: Transformations of the 1930s in the view of Józef ObrębskiThe article deals with political and social themes of Józef Obrębski's texts, which were written in the second half of the 1930s and were devoted to Polesie. Obrębski made his ethnosociological research in 1934-1937. It was the last phase of the great depression. Obrębski noted changes in political consciousness of inhabitants of the Polesie village. He described the consequences of the implementation of Polish-language education. He perceived the role and nature of communist influence. He wrote very critically about the attitude and role of local administration representatives. He did not limit himself to listing these problems. Instead, he tried to formulate proposals for activities that would have changed the attitude of inhabitants of Polesie voievodship towards the Polish State. Dostrzegał rolę i charakter wpływów komunistycznych.

Opis:
The object of this article is to discuss various forms of political radicalism in Central Europe after 1989. This issue is made important by this region’s impact on the Old Continent in its modern history and particular intensification of this phenomenon in countries undergoing dramatic social changes, system transformation in this case. Focusing his attention on Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria, the author classifies radical groups as “classic autocrats” and “evolutionary populists.” Differences in ideology, programmes and organization between them as well as their immanent qualities indicate that the popularity of radicals is but a transient phenomenon and poses no threat to the bases of democracy. However, one can consider it a lasting feature of this system, which materializes in the form of changing, disintegrating and yet again reborn groups.

Opis:
The main issue of this article is the radical political thought and the security of contemporary European democracies. In this article, this problem is analyzed on the example of programs of nationalist parties and other organizations, e.g. National Democratic Party of Germany, National Revival of Poland, Golden Dawn from Greece, New Force from Italy, British National Party, Right Sector and Svoboda from Ukraine and others. Radical nationalist parties undermine of the principles of modern democracies. They attempt to change the international order and change the borders of countries in Europe that exist since the end of World War II. According to the author, only the reduction of defects of democracy and the development of knowledge about democracy, the development of civil society, the elimination of material disparities between social groups and the development of the middle class in Europe, can be an effective remedy for political radicalism.

What has been less visible to observers over more than Iran’s thirty years political events or, in other words, what was actually formed the motivation power of government system after the 1979 revolution, was located under the shadow of a vast tree of religion, is a kind of xenophobia and, in its particular form, is anti-Western. It can be argued that the contents, capacity and role of this religion without any “anti-Western” anticipation were useless and deficient to the Iranian Shiite rulers. The basis of the discussion in this article is the context in which a kind of anti-modernization grew from within and became the dominant discourse of society headed by traditional clergy. What is being discussed in this article is to fingers on the main stimulus and the central tool of production of legitimacy, and its role and application in conjunction with the political ideology of rule in Iran. In this regard, the present article seeks to explain how this primary stimulus has evolved and how it is used as a political tool but in the form of ideology.
