This article examines the different manifestations of alternative temporalities in Ali Smith’s Goldsmiths Award novel How to be Both (2014). My argument is that the novel ‘queers’ understandings of time in two significant ways: by highlighting new possibilities of narrative structure that challenge linear conceptions of time and by questioning regulated notions of developmental temporalities in terms of progression from childhood to heteronormative adulthood. Hence, by drawing on the compelling framework of queer temporalities, the main goal of this article is to analyze the mechanisms deployed by Ali Smith to generate unprecedented configurations of queer time.

The article discusses the motifs of queerness (homosexuality) in classical (English) Gothic novels and indicates a parallel with the modern practices of reading and writing queerness. Additionally, it defines the place of queer Gothic on the map of queer Modernism at the turn of the 19th century and in the 20th century. Simultaneously, he poses a question about the reason for pushing this aesthetics to the margins of that whichis “highly artistic”, or its presence only in the mainstream – basically through pastiche, grotesque, stylization or the sole use of formal elements in a polyphonic or Silva rerum structure.

This paper will analyse the process of the creation of an original script and a short performance focused on the relationship between the Catholic figure of Francis of Assisi and the body, as framed by queer theory. Over the centuries and in various cultures, the Catholic institution has been a body of oppression, particularly to minorities. On the other hand, the institution has produced a significant number of figures who were resilient and who have defied the system, both internally and externally. Frequently, these figures are depicted in a tame manner, so that they are seen in a more conservative and orthodox light. Francis of Assisi is one of these figures. Particularly in and after the administration of the Order under Bonaventure, Franciscanism developed in a way that the image of the Poverello was manipulated and softened down. By returning to the pre-Bonaventure documents on the saint, and reflecting on them through queer theory, this project attempts to show the defiant traits of this saint, particularly in the way how he perceived and related with the body and physicality, including deformation. This presents a liberated approach to the body and queers the way how the body has been oppressed both by the Institution, which suppresses the body, as well as by society, that celebrates only select body forms. The second part of the paper ‘translates’ into practice the theoretical framework through a case-study of a theatrical project.

Museari is an online museum dedicated to upholding human rights and sexual diversity through art, history, and education. Museari was born in 2015 and since then more than 70 exhibitions have been presented. This paper analyzes Museari's interest in teacher training, something that has been especially positive during the Covid-19 pandemic. The objective of the research is to reflect on the opportunity to use a virtual museum to address issues of art and education. For data collection, we used assessment instruments specific to the case study, such as diagnoses, discussions, focus groups, and participant observation. We highlight museum’s positive reception by the students, particularly the role it plays in overcoming stereotypes and conventional taboos to achieve inclusive environments.

The article compares two versions of Miron Białoszewski’s American journal. The first one is censored, literarily elaborated and published officially in communist times, albeit posthumously. The other is a crude piece from Białoszewski’s Secret Diary. Both versions are analysed as attempts to come out in literature. In his American journal written in 1982, Białoszewski searched for a “third way” between communism and the Solidarity movement – namely, in the (homo)sexual liberation which he found in porn cinemas, darkrooms, and sex shops.

W artykule autorka podejmuje problematykę połączenia perspektywy queer z analizą intersekcjonalną poprzez podkreślenie konieczności włączenia do studiów nad seksualnością wymiaru społeczno-ekonomicznego. W dwóch pierwszych częściach artykułu prezentuje krytyczne odczytania obydwu tych perspektyw odwołując się między innymi do analiz Stevena Seidmana i Rosemary Hennessy. W części trzeciej włącza pojęcie metronormatywności i przedstawia wyniki badań sytuacji społecznej lesbijek żyjących na terenach wiejskich w Polsce (na podstawie badań w ramach projektu „Niewidoczne (dla) społeczności”).
The author underlines the necessity of connecting queer perspectives with intersectional analysis through bringing the social-economic dimension into sexuality studies. In the first two sections entitled, Queer perspective and intersectionality and Class and sexuality, respectively she presents critical readings of both perspectives drawing on the analyses from Steven Seidman and Rosemary Hennessy, among others. In the third section she includes a discussion of the concept of metronormativity and presents the results of research on the social situation of lesbians living in rural areas of Poland (on the basis of a study done within the project „Invisible (to) societies”).

Artykuł wprowadza nieznaną na polskim gruncie kategorię "gay gothic" czy "queer gothic" i wskazuje jej antycypacje w badaniach Marii Janion. Zasadniczym przedmiotem rozprawy jest interpretacja powieści w odcinkach "Skandal w Wesołych Bagniskach" Michała Choromańskiego, wydana książkowo kilkadziesiąt lat po premierze prasowej. Jedna z hipotez sugeruje, że powieść ta mogła zainspirować Witolda Gombrowicza do napisania "Opętanych". Powieść Choromańskiego czytana jest jako pastisz powieści gotyckich i zarazem nagromadzenie ówczesnych kulturowych tropów homoseksualności (aluzje do dzieł Iwaszkiewicza, Witkacego, Czechowicza, Sobańskiego).
The article introduces the category of "gaygothic " or “queer gothic”hitherto unknown in Poland and indicates its anticipations in Maria Janion’s work. The textfocuses on interpreting the episodic novel “Skandal w Wesołych Bagniskach [Scandal in Merry Swamps] by Michał Choromański, published in book form several decades after its original release in newspapers. One hypothesis suggests that this novel could inspire Witold Gombrowicz to write "The Possessed". Choromański’s novel is read as a pastiche of Gothic novels and at the same time contemporary accumulation of cultural tropes of homosexuality (allusions to works by Iwaszkiewicz, Witkiewicz, Czechowicz or Sobański).

Who (and what) was silent about the story told by heteronormative society? And how is the fragment of this story seen by “Others”? The article shows that the time of “queer before gay” includes (in Polish) not only well-known names such as: aunt or pedal, but also slang: ‘lala’ (doll), ‘przyjaciółki’ (friends), ‘siostry’ (sisters in Polish, girls in English), gays “from the outside of society”, as well as heterosexuals who got a ticket to the alternative world of the excluded. I tell this story from the perspective of the performative function of language (Althusser, Austin, Butler) and mechanisms of knowledge/power (Foucault). I focus on the activities of homosexual men encoded in their “hiding language” (sociopolitan gay). I show how the creation of the “homosexual” identity closed the community of aunts and pedals in a precisely defined form. And how camp and queering reality allowed them to function in this form. This article is thus another element of decoding the so-called language of concealment, so-called sociolect of Polish gays (aunts and pedals) and queering history of Poland (part of the queering history of Central and Eastern Europe).

Queer Theory and Polish cinema There has never been the Polish version of “Gay Cinema” or “New Queer Cinema”. However, in the Polish movies one can easily trace numerous nonstandard characters, elements, and themes permeated with queer desire and rendered in queer aesthetics. They were simply ignored by the research community. The notion of queer, which owes its theorization to Judith Butler and Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick and which is commonly defined as nonnormative expression of the sexual “strangers” beyond binary oppositions, has rapidly gained popularity in film studies. The researchers have begun to focus on neglected and/or censured unstable sexualities, on film characters’ construction, on authorial voice as manifested in the film, and on the different forms and styles of reception. They have looked for queer codes of nonnormative sensibility in the movies of which the authors were or were not homosexuals. Interpretation of two camp scenes from the movie Piętro wyżej (1937, dir. Leon Trystan) demonstrates that the tools which have been developed by queer theory appear helpful when applied to the Polish cinematic texts as well.

This paper explores Sara Ahmed’s Queer Phenomenology from a disability studies perspective. In addition to her emphasis on race and desire, I ask how we might use Ahmed’s queer, cultural phenomenology to ask about the sociomaterial basis of disablement, reflecting on the interactive emergence of these subjectivities more generally. In the first section of this paper, I examine¬¬ the three main chapters in Ahmed’s important book. I then ask what Ahmed might have asked, if she had explored disability therein. Next, I turn to some phenomenological disability studies, interrogating how subjectivity is put to work in the shared world, rather than universally accorded to all persons at all times. In the final section of this paper, I return to the basis of the phenomenological project itself, and ask what this revised version of subjectivity means for the phenomenology of Heidegger and Husserl, with an eye to future work.
Niniejszy tekst stanowi refleksję na temat ważnej książki Sary Ahmed, Fenomenologia queer, z perspektywy studiów nad niepełnosprawnością. Sama Ahmed kładzie nacisk na kategorie rasy i pożądania. Warto się jednak zastanowić, czy istnieje możliwość wykorzystania jej queerowej fenomenologii kulturowej w rozważaniach na temat społeczno-materialnego podłoża niepełnosprawności i interaktywnego powstawania niepełnosprawnych podmiotowości. Pierwsza część artykułu analizuje trzy główne rozdziały książki Ahmed. W kolejnej części autor zastanawia się, jakie pytania zadałaby Ahmed, gdyby badała niepełnosprawność. Następnie zwraca się ku fenomenologicznym badaniom niepełnosprawności, zadając pytanie, jak funkcjonuje podmiotowość w świecie dzielonym z innymi, nie jako atrybut dany raz na zawsze wszystkim osobom. W końcowej części artykułu autor powraca do głównego zadania fenomenologii, by poszukiwać odpowiedzi na pytanie, co takie zrewidowane pojęcie podmiotowości oznacza dla fenomenologii Heideggera i Husserla, oraz jak może zostać wykorzystane w dalszych badaniach.

„A tornado flew around my room before you came” – black queer studies and querring black masculine Starting off with Frank Ocean’s coming out story, author shows the limits of identity politics discourse. Referring to Siobhan B. Somerville’s theories, he discusses complicated intersections between race and sexuality and offers a brief history of their meaning. Grounding his argument in the methodology gathered under the umbrella term of „black queer studies”, Stępniak presents E. Patrick Johnson’s theory about appropriating blackness. Uncovering heteronormative ideology standing behind the production of the „authentic blackness” discourse, he goes on to criticize the notions of patriarchal black masculinity. To illustrate his point, instead of reading „against the grain” of some straight cultural representations of black men, Stępniak offers an insight into two performance pieces by Afro-American homosexual theatre group, Pomo Afro Homos, and tries to show the process of performing black gay masculinity. He avoids essentialist stances though by insisting on the performative nature of the group’s work.

The review sums up Piotr Seweryn Rosół’s book devoted to the relation between Witold Gombrowicz and Jean Genet. Despite his critical overtone, the author does not explicitly assess Rosół’s book. He argues with the general idea but notices ambitious intentions and interesting interpretations, which prevents him from rejecting the book as such. On the one hand, Rosół’s work bears the hallmarks of Gombrowicz studies truisms, and on the other hand, it renews some interpretations as it suggests that Gombrowicz uses Genet to “outline” the shape of generally avoided issue of homosexuality. Rosół’s book proves that certain way of critical reading of Gombrowicz is no longer valuable and although he attempts to transgress the traditional critical approach, he does it inconsistently.

Ideas Lost in Time: LGBT Politics vs. Queer Theory and Practice in Poland and in the ‘West’ The text explores ways in which “Western” ideas of LGBT and queer politics travel and are nested in Poland. I am here particularly interested in the functioning of the notion of time. I claim that Polish LGBT activism cannot be simply categorised as “identitarian” or “queer,” because it exists in much different geo-temporality than that of “the West.” I focus on Campaign Against Homophobia, the largest and best-know Polish LGBT organisation. Their choice of strategies and discourses can be considered a certain queer mixture of ideas as represented through various historical stages of Western LGBT activism. I will explore reasons for this. Upon the emergence of LGBT activism in Poland in the 1990s, “Western” ideas were unanimously applied without much attempt at understanding their cultural and historical context. At one point in the Polish history, “Western time” simply took over, becoming a “universal time” for both the West and CEE. However, what is continuity from the Western perspective, here is a knotted and de-historicised cultural phenomenon – as much imposed as welcome – of which Polish LGBT activists and academics are trying to make sense. Thus, rather than repeating dominant discourses of CEE trying to “catch up with” Europe, I intend to look into much finer processes of  eaving and sawing geo-temporal realities into Polish LGBT activism.

El presente trabajo explora la producción artística de Marcelo Pombo, Fernanda Laguna y Omar Schirilo, artistas nucleados en el Centro Cultural Rector Ricardo Rojas de la ciudad de Buenos Aires durante los años noventa, a través de operaciones plásticas, materiales, contenidos y referencias visuales vinculadas a la infancia como modo político de interferir con la normatividad y con las ficciones normativas que regulan el canon artístico. Mediante estas ideas, se pensarán las imagénes a partir de los reordenamientos estéticos y políticos provistos por las temporalidades queer.
This paper explores the works of art by Marcelo Pombo, Fernanda Laguna and Omar Schiliro, artists working in the Centro Cultural Rector Ricardo Rojas in Buenos Aires during the 1990’s. Their plastic operations, materials, contents and visual references are related to childhood as a political way of interfering with heteronormativity and normative fictions that regulate the artistic canon. Through these ideas, we will think of the images from the aesthetic and political rearrangements that provide queer temporalities.

In queer studies, both socially- and literature-oriented, theatrical metaphors are used to formulate ontological and epistemological research basis and its object. According to Judith Butler’s gender theory, performance and performativity are the basic concepts regarding a constructive understanding of identity. On that account, this article presents different uses of theatrical vocabulary, ranging form Judith Bulter’s differentiation between “performance” and “performativity”, to Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s project of “reparative performance”, which goes far beyond Butler’s exclusion of artistic context.
W społecznych i literaturoznawczych teoriach queerowych metaforyka teatralna określa ontologiczne i epistemologiczne podstawy badawcze oraz ich przedmioty. W źródłowej dla badań teorii płci Judith Butler performans i performatywność funkcjonują jako centralne pojęcia konstruktywistycznego rozumienia tożsamości. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przyjrzenie się przemianom, jakim podlegają w zróżnicowanych dyskursach queer studies konteksty i słowniki teatralne. Główną osią są queerowe praktyki interpretacji tekstów kultury, których ewolucja ukazuje emancypacyjną i wspólnotową funkcję teatralizacji języków teoretycznych, pozwalających na wykorzystanie scenicznej estetyki do lektur afektywnych i naprawczych.

The article is an attempt at addressing the problem of "masculinity" as a historically privileged category in the social and philosophical tradition. In the dichotomous gender system, femininity is usually valued as aesthetic quality, while masculinity stands as an ethical value. This distinction, suggesting the subordinated and disadvantaged position of "femininity" derives from ancient philosophy and biblical tradition and was strengthened not only by philosophical writings but also by symbolic, legal, economic and social practices. By sketching a review of positions and confronting the stereotypical image of "masculinity" with the complex reality of multiple forms of masculine expressions, the article brings the situation of "masculinity" in the world organized by the phallogocentric symbolic order.

Opracowaną przez Jacka/Judith Halberstam koncepcję metronormatywności rozumiem w dwójnasób: z jednej strony jako krytykę nadmiernej uwagi, jaką studia queer poświęcają miastom, a w konsekwencji braku zainteresowania przestrzeniami, ciałami i tożsamościami niemiejskimi, z drugiej zaś jako krytykę linearnej narracji, zgodnie z którą miasto jest niejako ostatecznym celem fizycznej i duchowej podróży każdej osoby odmieńczej – swego rodzaju Ziemią Obiecaną, w której każda tożsamość i pragnienia mogą być w pełni zrealizowane. O ile drugie z przywołanych zastrzeżeń jest uzasadnione, a miasto nie tylko ma potencjał wyzwoleńczy i jest źródłem możliwości, ale może również ograniczać, czy to poprzez działalność służb porządkowych, inwigilację czy represje, pierwsze jest zdecydowanie bardziej problematyczne, gdyż pomija mnogość odmieńczych urbanizmów (jak choćby lesbijski, metropolitarny/niemetropolitarny, robotniczy itd.), ich hierarchiczny charakter oraz mechanizmy alienacji w obrębie miejskich studiów queer. Aby udowodnić powyższe tezy, odwołam się do już istniejących krytycznych opracowań koncepcji metronormatywności oraz moich własnych badań dotyczących przestrzeni odmieńczych w Niemczech weimarskich (1919-1933), aby zaproponować bardziej zniuansowane podejście do tej idei, jak również podróż przez bary, pikiety, mieszkania i komisariaty weimarskich miast—podróż bynajmniej sentymentalną czy nostalgiczną, biorąc pod uwagę ówczesne, nierzadko bezwzględne realia osób odmieńczych, ale tym niemniej emocjonującą.

La narrativa de Etxebarria desvela las insuficiencias de las definiciones tradicionales de género y de roles sexuales. Sobre la base de las aportaciones de estudiosas como Monique Wittig, Christine Delphy, Colette Guillamin, Lucy Irigaray, Adrienne Rich, Gayle Rubin, Moe Meyer, Joanna Mizielińska y Barbara Smith nos proponemos extraer, describir y analizar la función de los signos feministas, lésbicos y queer en las novelas Beatriz y los cuerpos celestes y Cosmofobia.
The novels Beatriz y los cuerpos celestes and Cosmofobia by Lucía Etxebarria are filled with queer concepts—not only do the novels present gay and lesbian characters but they also depict heterosexual characters, mainly women, who transgress patriarchal norms and reject the hetero/homo dichotomy. Etxebarria’s narrative reveals the insufficiencies of traditional gender and sexual role definitions. Basing on the theoretical contributions of Monique Wittig, Christine Delphy, Colette Guillamin, Lucy Irigaray, Adrienne Rich, Gayle Rubin, Moe Meyer, Joanna Mizielińska, and Barbara Smith the article aims to extract, describe and analyze the function of feminist, lesbian and queer signs in the novels Beatriz y los cuerpos celestes and Cosmofobia.

Autor dokonuje analizy dwóch filmów litewskich (Kolekcjonerki [Kolekcionierė, reż. Kristina Buožytė, 2008] oraz You Can’t Escape Lithuania [Nuo Lietuvos nepabegsi, reż. Romas Zabarauskas, 2016]), badając możliwości filmowych reprezentacji tematyki afektywnej z perspektywy autoreferencyjności medialnej. Inspirując się psychoanalitycznymi koncepcjami Jacquesa Lacana oraz feministyczną refleksją Laury Mulvey i Mieke Bal, autor artykułu na przykładzie wymienionych dzieł udowadnia, że afektywność jest w dużym stopniu zmediatyzowana, co jest swoistym znakiem współczesności. W artykule ponadto został zarysowany kształt współczesnego kina litewskiego, twórcy którego w swoich dziełach często odnoszą się do problematyki afektu i zmysłu. Niebagatelnym założeniem badawczym było również zwrócenie uwagi na kino litewskie jako takie, refleksja nad którym w Polsce jest rzadka i powierzchowna.
The author analyzes two Lithuanian films (The Collectress /dir. Kristina Buožytė, 2008/ and You Can’t Escape Lithuania /dir. Romas Zabarauskas, 2016/), exploring the possibilities of cinematic representations of affectivity from the perspective of media self-referentiality. Inspired by the psychoanalytical concepts of Jacques Lacan and the feminist reflection of Laura Mulvey and Mieke Bal, the author of the article used the example of the above-mentioned films to prove that affectivity is largely mediated, which is a peculiar sign of the our time. The article also outlines the shape of contemporary Lithuanian cinema, whose creators often refer to issues of affect and senses in their works. Another important research assumption is to draw attention to Lithuanian cinema, which is only rarely and superficially discussed in Poland.

Nawiązując do idei zawartych w dziele Michela Foucaulta Nadzorować i karać, autor na przykładzie dwóch powieści: Matka Boska Kwietna francuskiegoautora Jeana Geneta oraz Brat serbskiego pisarza Davida Albahariego, analizuje sposób manifestowania się represyjnych systemów nadzorowania i karania ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem kwestii queer. Ponadto w artykule poruszony został problem figury męskiej przyjaźni lub bratocentryzmu (androcentryzmu), która – zgodnie z rozpoznaniami Jacques’a Derridy zawartymi w książce The Politics of Friendship – jako filar zachodnich systemów filozoficznych wyklucza przyjaźń heteroseksualną lub kobiecą.
This paper, based on an idea of Michel Foucault from the book Discipline and Punishment, examined how the repressive systems of discipline and punishment are present in selected literary works: on the concrete levels in the novel Our Lady of the Flowers by French author Jean Genet, and on the symbolic levels in the novel Brother by Serbian writer David Albahari, primarily in relation to the moved, queer masculinity, or more precisely the transvestite or transgender persons. At the same time, attention was given to the figure of male friendship, or androcentric figure as the basis of Western philosophy and theory, the figure that excludes heterosexual friendship and friendship among women, as described by Jacques Derrida in his book The Politics of Friendship.

This article explores the political implications, both at the time and for present-day readers, of the way La Princesse de Clèves calls into question gender norms/roles. Analyzing plots and characters in Lafayette’s text and readers/critics’ reactions in various contexts, it foregrounds the unsettling potential of a text that paradoxically moved from the position of hapax-cum- media-sensation to that of a paradigm of the early-modern novel. By focusing on its continued efficacy in disturbing heteronormative stereotypes, it sheds light on the way literature from before the modern era can contribute to identifying and analyzing queerness and gender dissidence in past historical contexts.

From the Arab Spring to the Umbrella Revolution, the last cycle of citizen protests has widely shared the strategy of occupying public spaces through the settlement of protest camps. Although one might imagine a homogeneous unity amongst the protesters, these encampments have been the scenario of multiple inner conflicts in relation with different vectors of oppression. This article discusses the conflicts faced and the coalition-building developed by queer activists in different encampments, with a focus on the relation between the occupation of queer spaces and the space of the protest as a whole. The Foucauldian concept of heterotopia is used here as a guide in order to understand the ambivalences and inner tensions of the space of the protest without losing, nor idealizing, the utopian impulse of these movements.

W artykule przyglądam się krytycznie swojemu procesowi badawczemu opartemu na wywiadach swobodnych z osobami o doświadczeniu życia jako kobiety. Rewiduję powzięte wcześniej postanowienia, inspirując się już nie tylko metodologią feministyczną, ale przede wszystkim teorią queer. Sporo miejsca poświęcam problemom etycznym związanym z relacją badaczka-badana, w szczególności sytuacjom głębokiej zażyłości czy więzi sek¬¬sualnych, jakie mogą występować w tym układzie przed, w trakcie czy po realizacji wywiadu. Zainspi¬rowa¬na doświadczeniami akademiczek i akademików spoza Polski docieram do momentu, w którym jedynie ujaw¬nienie kontekstu rozmowy, w formie komentarza, oraz publikacja całego wywiadu, bez jakichkolwiek inter¬wencji z mojej strony mogą uczynić relację mniej hierarchiczną, wciąż jednak nie na tyle, by w zupełności poz¬być się moralnych dylematów towarzyszącym badaniom społecznym.
In the article I critically examine my own research process based on unstructured interviews concerning the interviewees' lives as women. Inspired by feminist methodology and, above all, by queer theory, I reassess my prior resolutions. I pay attention to the ethical problems ensuing from the interviewer-interviewee relation, particularly in cases involving deep intimacy and sexual relations before, during, or after the interview. Having contemplated the experiences of foreign academics, I arrive at the conclusion that only revealing the context of the conversation in the form of a commentary and publishing the full, unedited interview can make the interviewer-interviewee relation less hierarchical, though even this is not enough to dispel all the moral dilemmas accompanying social research.

The article presents the analysis and interpretation (in the form of a close reading) of Witold Gombrowicz’s short story The Premeditated Crime from his debut collection Memoirs from a Time of Immaturity , 1933 (later published under the title Bakakaj  or Bacacay  in the English translation). The main theoretical framework is the concept of „paranoid Gothic” by Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, which is based on the reinterpretation of Sigmund Freud’s classic essay Psychoanalytical comments on autobiographically described paranoia . From that perspective Gombrowicz’s narrative is interpreted as a paranoid homosexual narrative, and paranoia itself as a form of love.

Indian women’s writing from the mid-twentieth century that doesn’t fit the dominant tropes of resistance in postcolonial and feminist literary critiques have largely been untranslated and undiscussed. Especially neglected are narratives of native queerness, stories of transgressive desire and sexual alterity. In this essay, I explore Yamini’s complex desire in Chudamani Raghavan’s eponymous novella and its potential to complicate feminist and postcolonial discourses on women’s sexuality. Drawing on aspects of queer theory and poststructuralist notions of subjectivity, I examine how Yamini’s asexuality challenges and destabilizes cisheterosexist gender hierarchies and colonization. By examining language and silence in Yamini through the devices of Indian literary criticism and intertextuality, I locate Yamini’s queerness within the subcontinent’s long history of multivocal desire. I build on the precolonial notion that desire is not necessarily located in the body, and suggest that the transgressive desires of Yamini’s mind, the desire of ideas, is also a manifestation of queerness – capable of subverting hegemonic discourses of sexual and psychic normativity.

Głównym celem artykułu jest ukazanie złożoności problematyki transseksualności. Autorka szczególnie zwraca uwagę na kwestie teoretyczne związane z badaniem, definiowaniem transseksualności. Ukazuje także, jak badania nad transseksualizmem ewaluowały w czasie, w jaki sposób dyskurs medyczny zdeterminował postrzeganie tego zjawiska. Podkreślone tu zostaje to, że transseksualność nie daje się w prosty sposób przedstawić za pomocą jednej, wybranej teorii. Specyfika transseksualności komplikuje odczytywanie tego zjawiska poprzez pryzmat feminizmu, socjologii ciała czy teorii queer.
The main aim of this article is to show the complexity of transsexuality. The author draws particular attention to the theoretical issues related to the audit, defining transsexuality. She also shows how research on transsexualism tended to develop over time and how the medical discourse determined the perception of the phenomenon. It is empasized here is that transsexualism cannot be easily represented by one particular theory. The specificity of the transsexual complicates the reading of this phenomenon through the lens of feminism, the sociology of the body, or queer theory.

The author offers a critical judgment of Lacanian psychoanalysis, pointing out its normativizing aspect. He acknowledges the impossibility of reconciliation of psychoanalytic thought with the theory of radical difference, the example of which is queer, which has been postulated by such scholars as Judith Butler, Lee Edelman or Leo Bersani. As Eribon claims, queer theory constitutes a continuation of (antipsychoanalytic) philosophy of Michel Foucault, and it would be theoretically much more inspiring – Eribon further argues – to try to juxtapose Foucault’s thought with Sartre rather than with Freud or Lacan.

This article discusses the presence of railway epiphanies in the works of Miron Białoszewski, in particular their reference to queer events, understood as the presence of non-heteronormative meaning or desire. I examine the presence of trams, subways and railways in Białoszewski’s trips to Paris, Budapest and New York. Travelling by train can induce transgressive impulses and is often an occasion for expressing hidden tendencies, for instance homosexual behaviours. The experience of the train journey, which builds up weariness and drowsiness, can contribute to people experiencing a lack of boundaries and limits around them, with the consequence of everything becoming more confusing, obscure, and fluid. The movement of the train can cause a trance state, and due to the walking between the world of the conscious and subconscious mind, passengers evolve into “transpersons”, that is to say people “in the transition”, “on the way”, and “between”. Their gender becomes fluid, mobile, and “in motion”. This paper also analyses the figure of “derailed person” used by Artur Sandauer when comparing Białoszewski to Genet as a means of encoding homosexuality, here understood as a figure of the queer “derailment” of heteronormativity.

Artykuł jest próbą dokładniejszego zmapowania queerowo--rewolucyjnego potencjału teologii chrześcijańskiej, mającego podwójne źródła: historyczno-polityczne (antyimperialne korzenie chrześcijaństwa w sytuacji kolonialnej, generujące permanentną opozycję wobec imperialnych ideologii „wiecznego porządku”, cnoty i władzy, a także rozbudowane strategie parodystyczne) oraz religijno-imaginacyjne (teologia Wcielenia i Zmartwychwstania jako rewolucyjne dyskursy zwrócone przeciw całej antycznej tradycji metafizycznej, pracującej wokół „natury” i pozytywnych, determinujących porządków bytu / kosmosu, stabilizujących polityczneporządki imperialne, homonoia). Projekty chrześcijańskie okazały się zarazem „dewiacyjne” i „reapropriacyjne”: kryptopolityczny radykalizm chrześcijańskiej teologii Wcielenia i Zmartwychwstania wytworzył niesłychane napięcie, które prawie natychmiast rozładowywane było w ramach naturalizacji wyższego rzędu, ale napięcie to nie może zostać usunięte bez zniszczenia samych kontrimperialnych i antynaturalistycznych fundamentów tej teologii. Chrześcijańska erotyczna eschatologia „zbawiennych porażek” jako religijno--polityczna utopia nie ma nic wspólnego z „naturalnym porządkiem” oraz wspólnotą republikańskich / imperialnych podmiotów i ich cnót – dlatego polityczne ciała eklezjalne to ciała queerowe, niezdolne do bycia regularnymi organami„doskonałego ciała” jako wiecznego schēma.
The article is an attempt to map more closely a queer revolutionary potential of Christian theology, which has two sources: historico-political (anti--imperial roots of Christianity in a colonial situation, generating a permanent opposition against the imperial ideologies of the „eternal order”, virtue and power, as well as some comprehensive parodistic strategies), and religio-imaginative (theology of Incarnation and Resurrection as revolutionary discourses set against the whole ancient metaphysical tradition working around the concept of „nature” and the positive, determining orders of being / universe, which stabilize the political imperial orders, homonoia). The Christian projects turned out to be both „deviant” and „reappriopriative”: crypto-political radicalism of Christian theology of Incarnation and Resurrection has produced an enormous tension being relieved by some naturalization of a higher order, but that tension cannot be erased without destroying the very anti-imperial and anti-naturalistic foundations of the theology. Christian erotic eschatology of the „saving failures” as a religio-political utopia has nothing to do with the „natural order” or community of republican / imperial subjects and their virtues, which is why the political, ecclesial bodies are the queer bodies, un able to be regular organs within the „perfect body” as an eternal schēma.

Desde la primera década del siglo XXI en la Argentina, y frente a la saturación de representaciones normativas del género y de la sexualidad dentro de la industria cultural, resulta significativo que el discurso cinematográfico haya producido imágenes alternativas respecto a los géneros, las sexualidades, los vínculos eróticos y amorosos, la familia. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo poner en relación este fenómeno con la discusión en torno al surgimiento de un Nuevo Cine Queer. Para ello se presenta una breve introducción a esta noción en relación con las representaciones en torno a los cuerpos intersex, utilizando como corpus de trabajo dos películas estrenadas recientemente en el país: XXY (Lucía Puenzo, 2007) y El último verano de la boyita (Julia Solomonoff, 2009).
Facing a saturation of normative representations of gender and sexuality in the culture industry, the cinematographic discourse has managed, ever since the first decade of the XXI century in Argentina, to produce alternative images as regards genders, sexualities, erotic and affectionate bonds, family. This paper has the aim of setting the link between this phenomenon and the discussion on the emergence of the New Queer Cinema. For this purpose, a brief introduction is issued related to representations of intersex bodies thus presenting as corpus two films recently released in the country: XXY (Lucía Puenzo, 2007) y El último verano de la boyita (Julia Solomonoff, 2009).

Celem artykułu jest przegląd najważniejszych teorii przybliżających zjawisko porażki w grach cyfrowych, a następnie zaproponowanie nowej metody jego opisu. Analizie zostały poddane teoria przepływu autorstwa Mihály Csíkszentmihályi oraz książka Jespera Juula Sztuka przegrywania, w których badacze skupiają się na motywacyjnym aspekcie porażki; opisane przez Iana Bogosta retoryka porażki oraz jej perswazyjna rola; a także podejście reprezentowane między innymi przez Shuen-shinga Lee, Jacka Halberstama oraz Bonnie Ruberg, zwracające uwagę na pozytywne aspekty porażki. Autorka proponuje alternatywną analizę porażki z sześciu różnych perspektyw, opartą na modelu zaangażowania gracza Gordona Calleji oraz łączącą opisywane wcześniej teorie. Celem wypracowanego modelu jest zwrócenie uwagi na różne funkcje spełniane przez mechanizm porażki w grach cyfrowych, które nie ograniczają się jedynie do jej edukacyjnego aspektu.
The aim of the article is to present examples of already existing theories about the experience of failure in digital games and then propose a different approach to it. Firstly, it shows the way Csíkszentmihályi’s flow theory and Juul’s The Art of failure describe the motivational role of failure; then it points out the persuasive aspects of Bogost’s rhetoric of failure used in serious games industry; and lastly Lee’s, Roche’s and Halberstam’s approaches trying to recognize the positive features of failure are examined. The author then introduces six dimensions of failure based on Calleja’s Player Involvement Model. Through them, an alternative way of thinking about failure is proposed, in which the failure is perceived not (only) as an occurrence which needs fixing, but as a possibility for a different experience of gameplay.

W artykule szukam odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy spuścizna Michela Foucaulta jest wciąż aktualna, czy stanowi już tylko szacowny zabytek humanistyki. Wpisuję myśl Foucaulta w „logikę farmakonu”, to znaczy środka, który jest zarazem lekarstwem i trucizną. W polemice z poglądami Ewy Domańskiej pokazuję, że myśl Foucaulta nadal pozostaje aktualna. Pozwala bowiem tak pytać o podmiotowość, status norm i normalizacji, by z jednej strony dostrzegać mechanizmy władzy i wiedzy, które warunkują procesy upodmiotowienia, a z drugiej zdać sprawę z autonomii i samosterowności podmiotów, w tym z wpływu, jaki podmioty mogą wywierać na społecznie funkcjonujące normy.
In my article, I will try to find an answer to a question: Is Michel Foucault’s oeuvre still up to date or has it become one of the respected but foregone relics of humanities? I would inscribe Foucault’s thought into the “logic of pharmakon,” that is, a means being, at the same time, both a poison and a cure. I will show, polemically to Ewa Domańska, that Foucault’s thought remains valid nowadays. It allows us to question the subjectivity, status of norms, and normalization in such manner that we can perceive, on the one hand, mechanisms of power and knowledge and, on the other hand, we can give an account of subjects’ autonomy and self-determination, including their impact on norms at work in society.

The presentation of the work of the now forgotten writer concentrates on three key issues: Wilhelm Mach’s homosexual biography and the problems arising from it, ambiguity of the categories of masculinity, brotherhood and fatherhood, used by Mach, as well as “family anti-utopias,” whose portrayals can be found in Rdza [Rust] or Jaworowy dom [Sycamore House]. The author attempts to restore Mach’s name as an important figure in the history of the struggles of the Polish modernity with nonnormative sexuality; the writer’s political involvement is read as a consequence of the faith in the emancipatory power of the new order.

Przedmiotem analizy w tekście jest specyfika doświadczenia i cielesności osób transgenderowych. Wychodząc od definicji tego rodzaju tożsamości i jej uwikłania w normy genderowe i seksualne, autor pokazuje, że obecnie nie mieści się ona w sztywnych ramach, a bardziej polega na nieustannej negocjacji sensów i znaczeń. Zamiast jednak odwoływać się do codziennego życia subkultur queer czy społeczności transgenderowych, narażając się przy tym na fetyszyzujące, etnograficzne niemal spojrzenie na wybrany problem, autor skupia się na interpretacji kulturowych reprezentacji jednostek trans, jakie można odnaleźć we współczesnym amerykańskim kinie. Przeprowadzając komparatystyczną analizę filmów: Cal do szczęścia oraz Transamerica, autor tekstu krytycznie odczytuje konkretne zabiegi narracyjne i formalne, jakie mają służyć stworzeniu kulturowych wizerunków osób trans, podkreślając ich stereotypowość, opresyjność, ale i niekiedy wyzwoleńczą moc.
The article is centered around the peculiarity of trans experience and corporeality. Starting off with the definition of trans identity and its entanglement into gender and sexual norms, the author shows that it defies strict categorizations and is more about an-ongoing negotiation of senses and meanings. Instead of referring to the everyday life of queer subcultures and transgender communities though, risking the accusation of deploying an ethnographic, fetishizing look, the Author focuses on interpretation of cultural representations of trans individuals that could be found in modern American cinema. Offering comparative analysis of two pictures: Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Transamerica, the author critically reads specific narrative plots and devices that create the cultural image of trans characters, putting emphasis on their oppressive, stereotypical, but also emancipating potential.

Das Phänomen „Transsexualität“ kann in unterschiedlichen Perspektiven wahrgenommen, analysiert und erforscht werden. Die jeweils eingenommene historische, wissenschaftliche, religiöse oder persönliche Perspektive prägt auch entsprechende Einsichten und Urteile über dieses Phänomen. Dieser Artikel verdeutlicht sechs wichtige Perspektiven: zunächst jene der transsexuellen Personen und die medizinisch-psychiatrische Sichtweise (Geschlechtsidentitätsstörung, Geschlechtsdysphorie, Geschlechtsinkongruenz). Weiters wird die begriffliche Perspektive (Transsexualität, Transidentität, Transgender) sowie die der Gender / Queer Studies (natürliche Geschlechterdichotomie als soziale Konstruktion) verdeutlicht. Die beiden letzten Perspektiven betreffen verschiedene Konzepte von Geschlechtsidentität und deren Entwicklung sowie die katholisch-theologische Position, die weiterhin bedeutsam die geschöpflich verfügte binäre Geschlechterordnung als soziokulturelle Grundannahme der Geschlechterdifferenz formiert. Letztlich bedarf es einer integrativen Zusammenschau dieser Perspektiven, um dem Phänomen „Transsexualität“ möglichst sachgerecht entsprechen zu können.
The phenomenon of „transsexuality“ can be viewed, analyzed and studied from different perspectives. Each accepted perspective, that is historical, scientific, religious or personal one also affects the appropriate perception and judgments on this phenomenon. The article outlines six important perspectives: the perspective of a transsexual person, the medical and psychiatric one (disorder of gender identity, gender dysphoria, sex incongruity), conceptual perspective (transsexuality, trans-identity and trans-gender), the perspective of the gender studies / gender queer (natural dichotomy of a sex as a social construct), the perspective of different concepts of gender identity and their development, as well as the Catholic theological perspective, which still formulates in a significant way a creative disposition of a binary gender order as a socio-cultural basic assumption of different sexes. Finally, there is a need for inclusive review of these perspectives so as to be able to properly respond to the “transsexuality” phenomenon.
Zjawisko „transseksualności” może być postrzegane, analizowane i badane z różnych perspektyw. Każda przyjęta perspektywa historyczna, naukowa, religijna lub osobista odbija się również na odpowiednim postrzeganiu i osądach na temat tego zjawiska. Ten artykuł przedstawia sześć ważnych perspektyw: perspektywę osoby transseksualnej, perspektywę medyczno-psychiatryczną (zaburzenie tożsamości płciowej, dysforia płci, inkongruencja płci), perspektywę pojęciową (transseksualność, trans-tożsamość, trans-gender), perspektywę studiów gender / queer (naturalna dychotomia płci jako konstrukcja społeczna), perspektywę różnych koncepcji tożsamości płciowej i ich rozwój, a także perspektywę katolicko-teologiczną, która nadal dobitnie formułuje zadysponowany stwórczo binarny porządek płci jako społeczno-kulturowe podstawowe założenie różnych płci. Ostatecznie, zachodzi potrzeba integrującego ujęcia tych perspektyw, aby móc prawidłowo odpowiedzieć na zjawisko „transseksualizmu”.

Ideologiagenderiqueer dekonstruujepojęcieczłowieka. Kostium, który konserwuje znakową prawdę o człowieczej męskości i kobiecości, a w konsekwencji – o upłciowieniu ku prokreacyjności jako zasadzie konstytuowania wspólnoty życia – zostajezanegowany (gender) albo zastąpiony kreacją symbolizującą bezpłciową seksualność (queer). Obie postaci gender i queer zatracają, z dwóch różnych powodów, możność prokreacyjną: gender przez pozostawanie w związku homopłciowym, a queer – apłciowym i dowolnie seksualnym. Upodabnia je niemożność prokreacyjna, a w konsekwencji odrealnienie rodzicielskie. Tymczasem prawo życia zakłada prokreacyjność, a tym samym ojcostwo mężczyzny i macierzyństwo kobiety. Życie jako życie ustaje, kiedy warunek rodzicielstwa nie może być spełniony. W eseju źródłem tych twierdzeń jest prawo naturalne (iusnaturalis), będące uniwersalną przesłanką osądzania czynów obydwu postaci ponowoczesności jako sprzeniewierzających się idei życia.
The gender and queer ideology deconstructs the concept of a human being. The costume that preserves the symbolic truth about human masculinity and femininity, and as a consequence - about gendering towards procreation as the principle of constituting a community of life - is denied (gender) or replaced with a creation symbolizing asexual sexuality (queer). Both forms of genderand queer lose their ability to procreate for two different reasons: gender by being in a homosexual relationship, and queer by being sexually and freely sexually active. They are made similar to their reproductive inability and, consequently, parental unreal. Meanwhile, the law of life presupposes procreation, and thus paternity of a man and motherhood of a woman. Life as life ceases when the condition of parentage cannot be met. In the essay, the source of these statements is the natural law (iusnaturalis), which is a universal premise for judging the deeds of both forms of postmodernity as contradicting the idea of life.

This article considers how Sarah Schulman in her novel Rat Bohemia and other works utilizes her intersectional position as a Jewish lesbian writer to bear witness to her experience of AIDS epidemic. It analyzes how Schulman represents family as an institution of power to hold it accountable for the spread of AIDS epidemic in the context of her postmemory of Holocaust. It deals also with mechanisms of alignment with power within the gay community itself. Finally, it focuses on the central symbol of rats in Rat Bohemia understood as an indexical sign of the obscene. All these issues are theorized in the context of the problem of witnessing as strategies to write a testimony that remains loyal to the community and the reality of a crisis event.

Tekst artykułu stanowi recenzję dzieła Dezorientacje. Antologia polskiej literatury queer pod redakcją Alessandro Amenty, Tomasza Kaliściaka i Błażeja Warkockiego, które ukazało się w 2021 roku. Na antologię składa się obszerny zbiór fragmentów z utworów kanonicznych oraz pozostających na marginesie literatury polskiej. Reprezentacje twórczości różnorodnej pod względem tematyki, twórców i gatunków, rozciągające się czasowo od osiemnastego wieku do współczesności, rzucają nowe, pozbawione uprzedzeń światło na  tradycję historycznoliteracką, destabilizując separatystyczne podziały na centrum- peryferie, wysoki- niski, męski- kobiecy, które dotychczas kształtowały kanon literatury polskiej. Tym samym do rąk polskich czytelników trafia dzieło bez uprzedzeń i bez granic, otwarte na uzupełnienia i dające przestrzeń interpretacji, ale wypracowane na bazie teorii queer i samo, pod względem treści i metodologii doboru utworów, będące queerowym. Amenta, Kaliściak i Warkocki przechwytują kanon z potencjałem wywrotowym, tworząc antologię, którą można czytać zarówno jako podręcznik, jak i spójną, wielowątkową narrację.
This article is a review of the work Dezorientacje. An Anthology of Polish Queer Literature edited by Alessando Amenta, Tomasz Kaliściak and Błażej Warkocki, which was published in 2021. The anthology is an extensive collection of excerpts from both canonical and marginal works of Polish literature. Representing a variety of themes, authors and genres from the eighteenth century to the present day, the anthology casts a new, unprejudiced light on the historical literary tradition, destabilizing the separatist divisions into center and periphery, high and low, male and female, which have hitherto shaped the canon of Polish literature. Thus Polish readers will find a work without prejudice and without borders, open to additions and new interpretations, but developed on the basis of queer theory and itself queer in its content and methodology of selection. Amenta, Kaliściak, and Warkocki capture the canon with subversive potential, creating an anthology that can be read both as a textbook and as a coherent, multithreaded narrative.

In May 2014 the first ever Gay Pride Parade was held with tremendous success in Cyprus, a society that is still by-and-large very conservative. At the same time, in an adjacent street, the powerhouse that is the Greek Orthodox Church, organised a counter-parade comprising of far-right individuals, nuns and priests which, both in terms of numbers and influence, failed spectacularly. This paradox spurred a wave of analyses and examination of the way in which Cypriot society and culture seem to be changing until today, 7 years later, engaged as it would seem in a queering process, as well as on issues such as gay activism and civil partnership. My article analyses the ways in which the Parade’s expressed queer desire and the participants’ performativity starting in 2014, gesture towards a significant socio-political change in Cyprus. This analysis is largely based on Deleuze and Guattari’s notion of desire as a machine that generates reality, as I approach the Parade’s “queerness” as an expression of Cypriot society’s polyvalent socio-political manifestations which intentionally include the disenfranchised and provide new answers to questions of belonging. It is ultimately argued that, the way in which performative imagination seems to be able to generate reality, gestures towards a better understanding of the weak points of a dominant structure, becoming thus much more influential than the way in which Michel Foucault understands the notion of “power”. In other words, that the participants’ actions, choices and played-out desires lead to a final, dual performance that is the Parade and the counter-parade on the “stage” that is Cyprus. The Parade’s cultural performativity then, can be read as a site of vital performances, a kind of Bakhtinian carnivalesque that can lead to an understanding of a new socio-political identity which entails hope for the future. Thus, the dynamics of non-heteronormative sexual identities in Cyprus and their political potentials are explored vis-à-vis their capacity to interrogate hegemonic discourses, all of which gestures towards the queering of Cypriot culture.

En el momento actual asistimos a la supervivencia de la institución educativa moderna, asentada en un currículo arcaico y cerrado que genera prácticas educativas y pedagógicas que perpetúan una norma en relación al cuerpo, el deseo y la identidad y reproducen un discurso violento hacia aquella realidad que la subvierte. Por ello, las prácticas educativas deben apostar por nuevos enfoques asentados en la educación posmoderna, transfeminista y queer. Así, desde esta propuesta se aboga por una nueva visión: la pedagoqueer o pedagogía queer. Este nuevo enfoque propone un espacio de resistencia hacia la norma heterocisexista, buscando romperla para ofrecer nuevos modelos de cuerpos, deseos e identidades. Así, se indagará en la conceptualización de la pedagogía queer desde la Educación Social y la Educación Artística como estrategia clave para la ruptura de la heterocisnorma.
In this moment we attend to the survival of the modern educational institution, established in an archaic and closed curriculum that generates educational and pedagogical practices which perpetuate a rule related to the body, sexual attraction and identity, and reproduce a violent discourse towards the reality that subverts the rule.Therefore, educative practices have to claim for a new perspective established in a postmodern, transfeminist, and queer education. Hence, this proposal advocates a new view: the pedagoqueer or queer pedagogy. This new perspective proposes a space of resistance against the heterocisexist rule, seeking to break it up in order to introduce new models of bodies, sexual attractions and identities. In this way, the article will investigate the conceptualization of the queer pedagogy, considering the social education and the artistic education as key strategies for the break with the heterocis-rule.

El artículo pretende aportar un análisis de un conjunto de representaciones públicas del pasado reciente argentino desde la perspectiva de una filosofía queer de la historia. En él se sostiene que tal enfoque provee valiosas herramientas para indagar cómo y por qué forjamos nuestro pasado como lo hacemos, cuál es el “desorden” que la narrativa histórica con frecuencia intenta “ordenar” y con qué mecanismos lo hace, y cómo se vincula todo ello con nuestros intereses presentes. Con este objetivo, se describen y analizan, en primer lugar, distintos mecanismos que se ponen en juego en la producción de representaciones acerca de los eventos liminales que conmovieron a la Argentina en los años 70, específicamente respecto a los modos en los que se selecciona, presenta y describe a lxs protagonistas de la resistencia al terrorismo de Estado. Finalmente, se propone leer estas prácticas de la memoria pública como fenómenos de ansiedad política, repensándolas a la luz de la potencia que nos ofrece una mirada queer.
The paper offers an analysis of various public representations of Argentina’s recent past from the perspective of a Queer Philosophy of History. It contends that this approach offers valuable tools to look into how and why we shape our past like we do, what comes as the “mess” that historical narratives often try to “tidy up,” how they achieve this, and how all of this relates to our present interests. With this aim, the paper describes and analyzes different mechanisms that are put into play when producing representations of the liminal events that shook Argentina in the 1970s, focusing specifically on the ways in which those who were part of the resistance against State terrorism tend to be selected, presented and described. In its conclusions, it suggests reading these practices of public memory as cases of political anxiety, rethinking them through the potential offered by a queer perspective.

Even though the challenges that Queer* employees face in the workplace because of their intersecting identities of gender, sexuality, race, and class continue to be one of the rarely studied topics in social sciences, there has been a resurgence of interest in recent years, concerning how Queer* teachers experience the conflation of their sexual and professional identities. Informed by the recognition that schools are one of the most representative prototypes of gendered organizations with their ever-adapting regimes of inequality, this study is motivated by the question of how Queer* teachers in İstanbul deal with the enduring institutionalized homophobia, which has only got worse in terms of its silencing and pathologizing mechanisms. Claiming one of the fundamental functions of schools to establish strictly heteronormative spaces of learning, where any form of gender nonconformity or sexual dissidence stands before disciplinary punishment or reprimand from other students and teachers, I have examined the current working conditions of Queer* teachers in İstanbul within the contexts of schools, which compel Queer* teachers to abide by their institutionalized rules and norms of compulsory heterosexuality. This study attempts to learn what kind of experiences Queer* teachers in İstanbul articulate regarding the conundrum of being forced into presenting themselves as non-sexualized and non-gendered professional figures, as neoliberal policies and capitalist expectations of a rigid separation between professional identities and personal lives of workers continue to negatively affect the occupational well-being of Queer* teachers. A careful analysis of the interviews has revealed that the Queer* teachers in İstanbul are burdened with the aesthetic labor they are constantly expected to perform due to the emergent neoliberal schemes of professionalism and that they suffer under closely monitoring mechanisms of heteronormative school policies and work climates.

The article presents a thorough analysis of William S. Burroughs’s gender theory. In the first part of the text, the author characterizes Burroughs’s standpoint in the fields of literature, art, popculture, and the university. In the second part, the author explains how Burroughs understood the category of sex and gender. The third part is devoted to the way gender is represented in Burroughs’s novel The Wild Boys; in the fourth one, the author presents Burroughs’s conception of “queer” and shows how it corresponds with gender theories of radical feminists. The author concludes by emphasizing most important connections between Burroughs’s vision of sexuality and gender.

The article is an attempt to analyze selected writing strategies of Nina Bouraoui, a contemporary Algerian-French writer who talks about her own identity in the works which verge on literary genres: autobiography and prose fiction. Stylistic and thematic consideration of autofiction novel Mes mauvaises pensées permits to capture the specificity of hybrid, transcultural subjectivity in the text. Equally important interpretative clues are provided by postmodern nomadism and space-time perception of non-normativeness. Bouraoui’s works are classified as (post) postcolonial creativity, whose essential distinguishing feature is the process of simultaneous crossing of geographical, gender and cultural borders.

В статье рассматривается творчество Евгения Харитонова: представлены обстоятельства публикации авторских сборников, а также отличительные черты произведений. Кроме того, была совершена попытка определить место негетеронормативного литературного героя, находящегося в советском социальном пространстве. Исследование было проведено с использованием концепции современных философов - Джорджо Агамбена и Юлии Кристевой, а также научных работах с области социальной теории queer.
The article attend to the work of Yevgeny Kharitonov: the circumstances of the publication of copyright collections, as well as the distinguishing features of the works are presented. Also has been taken an attempt to determine the place of a homosexual literary character located in the soviet social space. The study was carried out using the concept of modern philosophers - Giorgio Agamben and Julia Kristeva, as well as scientific works in the field of social queer theory.

Le Roman de Silence Heldris’a de Cornouailles ukazuje niejednoznaczną postać Silence, dziewczynki wychowanej jako chłopiec, który/a staje się później dzielnym rycerzem i doskonałym żonglerem. Nie sposób jej jednoznacznie skategoryzować, dlatego szczególnie ciekawe wydaje się spojrzenie na Silence przez pryzmat gender studies i teorii queer. Żyjąc w świecie męskiej dominacji i dychotomicznych podziałów, Silence nie jest w pełni ani mężczyzną, ani kobietą. Gry językowe oraz niekonsekwentnie zmienne zastosowanie męskich i żeńskich zaimków przez autora wzmagają wrażenie wieloznaczności bohatera/ki, który/a niejednokrotnie afirmuje swoją męską tożsamość. Z punktu widzenia społeczeństwa, istotny jest jednak powrót do status quo i jasne określenie tożsamości bohatera/ki. Silence musi stać się kobietą i żoną.

The aim of this paper is to present how transmen perceive their masculinity while constructing it during the process of transition in Poland. One’s own sexual identity can be demonstrated in various ways. However, transsexual people frequently follow stereotypical images of being a woman or a man. They seek a clear and obvious message so as to express themselves and their sex. It is related to forming their own image, appropri- ate body-language and their behavior towards the opposite sex. That is why transsexual people tend to choose sexually unambiguous clothing, avoiding unisex fashion.

In this paper, the author presents a pedagogical insight of conducting a detailed exploratory study through methodological departures within the subjective boundaries of a specific field. The work is based upon inferences drawn from the study of “queer” identities in an urban but inherently parochial setting of a postcolonial city – Kolkata. The paper attempts to map and chart the various aspects of conducting qualitative research in a relatively unexplored area, with rapidly evolving socio-cultural values and systems of identity formation. The paper charts out the experiences from the field, while dealing with both the apparent and the esoteric, with objective and empirical evidence to support the arguments presented herein.

A preferred gender pronoun or PGP is the gender pronoun, or set of gender pronouns, an individual uses to represent themselves and by which they would like others to use when they represent them (PFLAG). The use of PGPs is meant to show respect to the autonomy of individuals whose gender identity may not conform to the appearance of others, or individuals whose identity is gender non-binary (HRC). The use of PGPs is suggested as a best practice by nearly every major LGBT+ organization in the US (PFLAG, HRC, etc.). Today, systems for implementing PGPs exist everywhere from college applications, hospital intake forms, dating websites, and beyond. While the use of PGPs shows respect for transgender and gender nonconforming individuals, these practices have unintended consequences as they contribute to the ever-expanding economies of data collection, made possible through the rise of information technologies. This work will explore questions of economy and power related to the collection of PGPs and the challenge of queer autonomy in the age of neoliberal capitalism.

In this article, I analyze the relations between humans, non-humans, and infrastructure in Vjeran Miladinović Merlinka’s fictionalized autobiography Terezin sin. I argue that queer humans and non-humans share a particular ontological and axiological space and time in urban ecology in relation to the built environment of cis-heteronormative socius grounded in reproductive heterosexuality.The fictionalized autobiography that is explored in this article offers a particular view of minoritarian relation as it depicts a queer form of relationality that is lived sideways to the cis-heteronormativity and reproductive heterosexuality as an oppressive form of life that creates a specific kind of infrastructural intimacy for itself in the urban built environment. Relations between queer humans andnon-humans under these conditions are decidedly messy, as they are described as both caring and exploitative in Terezin sin.

Sarah Gubbins and Joey Soloway’s recent series “I love Dick” – an adaptation of a cult feminist novel by Chris Kraus – demonstrates a rare, visceral grasp of the deep roots of gender oppression. The response to this oppression is intersectional, anti-racist, gender-queer empowerment and feminist desire. It’s inspiring and must be defended from (misunderstanding vis-à-vis) the perspective of the heteronormative gaze, still dominant together with the masculinist and racist gaze in the maturing 21st century. In its deviations from the novel, the screen adaptation activates intersectional connections that remain underdeveloped in the original. If the novel mines sexual oppression and gives voice to feminist desire in its raw and terrific power, I read the series as excavating sexual oppression at the intersection of sex, gender, race and class, and giving voice to (gender-)queer desire in all its fantastic force.

In 2009, in the city of Nantes, a pack of six wolves was released in a public park as part of Stéphane Thidet’s art installation. A book of short stories accompanied the event. One of the authors involved was Olivia Rosenthal, who then incorporated her story into the novel Que font les rennes après Noël? (2010), in which captive wolves are reintroduced to the city. In this post-natural environment, animals provide a semblance of the wilderness for residents, yet remain enclosed in an extended zoo designed by man – an act that domesticates both sides of the fence by  separating humans from wolves. Rosenthal’s protagonist is one of such captives. Her life and the lives of animals are presented in parallel narratives. She grows up in a strictly controlled environment, and social standards are imposed on her. In a semi-autobiographical vein, Rosenthal explores issues of queer and gender marginalization as well as emancipation. At the same time, she seeks to dismantle the binary oppositions that place animals, women, and non-heteronormative persons on the other side of the fence. Relying on queer ecofeminist theory developed by Greta Gaard (1997) as well as trans-species urban theory formulated by Jennifer Wolch (1998), this paper argues that we should challenge the hierarchical approach to human and non-human life, as it silences differences and denies voice, rights, and agency to women, non-heteronormative persons, and animals. Ważną częścią artykułu jest problem pedagogicznych narzędzi i strategii używanych przez rodziny, które konfrontują się z homoseksualnością.
This article is concerned with results of phenomenographic study in which the meanings of coming out constructed by homosexual males are identified. Authors discuss the issue of otherness as a category that describes the self-experience of gays as well as the problem of their constructed sexual identity as unstable and changeable. An important part of the article is the problem of pedagogical tools and strategies used by family members when confronting the homosexual identity.

This article proposes a more inclusive approach to the concept of gender, identity, and non-normativity. Gender is often used in research as a binary category, leading researchers to misrepresent the more complex reality. Taking a more inclusive perspective on how people differ in terms of their body and body perceptions and accepting gender as a fuzzy category make research in linguistics more inclusive in terms of the communities we study and the methodologies we use. Queer Cognitive Linguistics (QCL) proposes a non-reductive approach to language and cognition, recognising the complexity of the human conceptual system. QCL treats universality in human cognition with caution and posits, after Embodied Sociolinguistics, the two-way embodiment, where the interactions between body and language are both bidirectional and intertwined.

The term communitas, introduced into anthropological discourse by Victor Turner in the late 1960s, returned to humanist debates at the threshold of the twenty-first century by way of Roberto Esposito. Referring to Esposito’s concept of communitas, this essay brings out the anthropological tradition in thinking about the common, which Esposito had marginalized. The present author emphasized the importance of processuality and antistructural dimensions of egalitarian forms of togetherness, along with their potential to liberate human capacities of creativity. Examining the relation between munus and ludus, she shows theatricality residing immanently in the root of communitas. Focusing on the aesthetic and creative dimensions of togetherness helps in detecting multiple forms of commonality, and indicates various models of theatrical communitas. Exploring a nonnormative, transformative potential in experimental theater (Jerzy Grotowski, Sarah Kane, Ron Athey, Krzysztof Garbaczewski), she emphasizes collective, temporal, and excessive natures of theater that eschews the market-driven economy, along with the importance of a transversal communitas where the human being is only one of many actors. Some threads of the argumentation are expanded upon in a conversation with Leszek Kolankiewicz, included as an appendix.
Pojęcie communitas, wprowadzone do dyskursu antropologicznego przez Victora Turnera pod koniec lat 60. XX wieku, powróciło do debaty humanistycznej u progu XXI wieku za sprawą Roberta Esposito. Niniejszy esej przywraca zmarginalizowaną przez Esposito antropologiczną tradycję w myśleniu o tym, co wspólne. Autorka podkreśla znaczenie procesualności i antystrukturalności egalitarnych form bycia razem oraz ich potencjał wyzwalania kreatywności. Analizując relację między munus a ludus, ukazuje teatralność jako immanentną właściwość communitas. Skupienie na estetycznych i twórczych aspektach wspólnotowości pozwala odsłonić i nazwać wiele jej form oraz scharakteryzować rozmaite modele teatralnej communitas. Autorka wskazuje na nienormatywny i transformacyjny potencjał teatru eksperymentalnego (Jerzy Grotowski, Sarah Kane, Ron Athey, Krzysztof Garbaczewski), by podkreślić kolektywny, efemeryczny i ekscesywny charakter teatru wymykającego się ekonomii rynku, a także uwydatnić znaczenie transwersalnej communitas, w której człowiek jest tylko jednym z wielu aktorów. Niektóre wątki argumentacji zostały rozwinięte w umieszczonej w aneksie rozmowie z Leszkiem Kolankiewiczem.

This research paper aims to present the issue of gender studies as a scientific discipline embed in certain research context and in a network of relations with such ideas and conceptions as feminism and queer theory. By analyzing the historical and philosophical context and the range of influence in the area of these three disciplines, I consider the way how they popularly function in the scientific and common discourse. By relating both disciplines to each other and confronting them with the chronology, I analyze possible variants of thinking the sequent of these disciplines or their ahistorical functioning. I also search for the similarities between them, which could advocate a diachronic view and place in the causal context that calls to the synchronic attempt. In that way I consider all points of view and speculate validity or invalidity of synchronic attempt to gender studies, feminism and queer theory. Starting from asking for the historism or ahistorism of the term gender and presenting the way it varies from feminist and queer conceptions, I consecutively analyze feminism with reference to gender research (in both variants of the chronological result); gender research with reference to queer studies and queer studies with reference to feminism.

The aim of the paper is to discuss Polish sex positivity movement and its relationship to queer theory. This is done on the basis of a case study, i.e. the analysis of the book Warsztaty intymnosci [The Workshops of Intimacy] by Agnieszka Szezynska. The author of the article presents selected aspects of this publication, focusing on the typical features of sex positivity approach (in so doing, she refers to other Polish and English sources which represent or study this topic). Apart from that, the scholar shows conceptual overlaps between Szezynska’s perspective and queer theory. In conclusion, the author discusses the functioning and possible outcomes of this alliance in the Polish context.

Translating gender: Madame Intuita by Izabela Filipiak – Based on camp aesthetics, masquerade, irony and intertextuality, the poetry volume Madame Intuita (2002) by the Polish writer Izabela Filipiak aims to dismantle gender stereotypes and patriarchal linguistic codes. When translating her poems, both grammatical and social gender issues should be taken into due account. In the paper, the author analyses his own Italian translation of Filipiak’s poems (published in 2007) to explain the strategies used to preserve gender elusiveness, gender specification, and gender fluidity, as they play a key role in the writer’s poetic imaginary.

Szkic jest poświęcony amerykańskiemu nurtowi awangardowemu New Narrative, powstałemu w latach siedemdziesiątych XX wieku, oraz strategiom poetyckim towarzyszącym jego społeczno-politycznemu zaangażowaniu w sytuację mniejszości seksualnych. Autorka szkicu przedstawia twórczość trzech postaci z nim związanych: Eileen Myles, Magdaleny Zurawski i CA Conrada, których utwory i działania artystyczne skupiają się na problematyce obywatelstwa i suwerenności osób LGBTQ+ żyjących w USA. Proponuje analizę dorobku tych twórców w kontekście refleksji filozoficznej Achillego Mbembe dotyczącej nekropolityki, która rozwijana jest obecnie na gruncie amerykańskim także w odniesieniu do osób queer i praktyk queerowych. 
This article discusses the American avant-garde movement called New Narrative, which originated in the 1970s, as well as the poetic strategies that accompanied its socio-political involvement in the cause of emancipation of sexual minority groups. The author discusses the output of three representatives of this movement: Eileen Myles, Magdalena Zurawski, and CA Conrad, whose work and artistic activity have focused on the problems of civil rights and the freedoms, or lack thereof, of LGBTQ+ persons in the United States. The author undertakes an analysis of the three artists’ output within the context of the philosophical reflections of Joseph-Achille Mbembe on the necropolitics, a body of ideas currently investigated in the US in relation to queer identity and queer practices.

Niniejszy artykuł stanowi próbę ujęcia strategii życiowych i praktyk językowych osób nie hetero¬norma¬tyw-nych, funkcjonujących w japońskim społeczeństwie, w perspektywie koncepcji queerowych, a zatem przy naś¬wietleniu nie tyle historycznych kontekstów czy genealogii, ile oporu wobec japońskich i zachodnich idei już niehegemonicznych, jednak wciąż służących dominacji opresyjnego patriarchatu.
This paper is an attempt to overview life strategies of those people in Japan, whose experiences have fallen outside the scheme of heteronormative roles. The modes of resistance to hegemonic notions are analysed in their historical context, including the origins and popularity gaining, however the main point is to reveal the withdrawal of hegemony of numerous outdated social norms. The analysis of selected examples is done engaging with Japanese gender theories as well as western queer approach.

"Biopolitic" has become a popular concept for interpreting the COVID-19 pandemic, yet the term is often used vaguely, as a buzzword, and therefore loses its specificity and relevance. This article systematically explains what the biopolitical lens offers for analyzing and normatively criticizing the politics of the coronavirus. I argue that biopolitic are politics of differentiated vulnerability that are intrinsic to capitalist modernity. The situation resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic is, therefore, less of a state of exception than it might appear; COVID-19 is a continuation and intensification of the capitalist biopolitic of differentiated vulnerability. In order to critically evaluate this situation, the article proposes the concept of “democratic biopolitic” and shows how it can be used, among others, for a queer critique of the differentiated vulnerabilities that are produced by the coronavirus and its capitalist governance. In contrast to widespread interpretations of democratic biopolitic that focus on collective care in communities, this article highlights the role of the state and of the redistribution of political power and economic resources as key for biopolitical democratization.

Based on theatricality, humour and camp aesthetics, the novel Lubiewo (2005) by the Polish writer Michał Witkowski recounts the tragicomic lives and adventures of Polish queers under Communism. One of the main features of the novel is the meaning-bearing nicknames of the characters, which result from the camp practice of “queer renaming”. This relies on transforming or substituting male proper names with ironic and witty female nicknames. The paper analyses the German, French, English and Czech translations of the novel to explain the strategies used to render such “talking nouns” in new linguistic-cultural contexts.

This article explores the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) migrants from Central and Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union in Scotland. Drawing on interviews with 50 migrants, the article focuses on the experiences and aspirations which they articulate as being part of ‘a normal life’, and analyses them within broader conceptual understandings of security and ‘normality’. We first examine how normality is equated with an improved economic position in Scotland, and look at the ways in which this engenders feelings of emotional security and well-being. We then explore how more positive experiences around sexuality and gender identity are key to a sense of emotional security – i.e. of feeling accepted as ‘normal’, being visible as an LGBT person but ‘blending in’ rather than standing out because of it. Finally we look at the ways in which the institutional framework in Scotland, in particular the presence of LGBT-affirmative legislation, is seen by participants to have a normalising effect within society, leading to a broader sense of inclusion and equality – found, again, to directly impact upon participants’ own feelings of security and emotional well-being. The article engages with literatures on migration and sexuality and provides an original contribution to both: through its focus upon sexuality, which remains unexplored in debates on ‘normality’ and migration in the UK; and by bringing a migration perspective to the debates in sexuality studies around the normalising effect of the law across Europe. By bringing these two perspectives together, we reveal the inter-relationship between sexuality and other key spheres of our participants’ lives in order to better understand their experiences of migration and settlement.

Opis:
Mikita Franko, the author of three novels qualified by critics as queer-literature for young adults, made his debut on the Russian literary market in 2020. Brought up in Kazakhstan in a same-sex family, Franko was a critic of the Vladimir Putin regime even before February 24, 2022; also after the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, he did not stop making critical comments in social media. The novels of the young writer deal with the problem of searching for one's own identity and living in an intolerant society. The non-traditional families presented in the works (same-sex, monoparental) face various difficulties, most severely felt by the heroes in adolescence. Franko reflects the current social changes by showing alternative family models and comparing them with traditional models. It is worth emphasizing that the families portrayed by the writer consist mainly of men, which encourages a careful examination of the role of the mother and her significant absence in the lives of the characters. Based on traditional ideas about motherhood, as well as anthropological and sociological works and queer-literature researchers, in this article I will attempt to analyze the image of the mother in the above-mentioned novels.
Микита Франко, автор трех романов, причисляемых критиками к квир-литературе для молодых взрослых, дебютировал на российском литературном рынке в 2020 году. Франко, который воспитывался в однополой семье в Казахстане, еще до 24-ого февраля 2022 г. критиковал режим Владимира Путина; после агрессии Российской Федерации на Украину он не прекратил помещать свои критические комментарии в соцсетях.  Романы молодого писателя затрагивают проблематику поисков идентичности и жизни в нетолерантном обществе. Представленные в его произведениях нетрадиционные семьи (однополая, монопарентальная) сражаются с разного рода трудностями, которые сильнее всех чувствуют юные, взрослеющие герои. Франко изображает актуальные общественные перемены, показывая альтернативные типы семей и сопоставляя их с традиционными моделями. Стоит подчеркнуть, что семьи, представленные писателем, состоят прежде всего из мужчин, что провоцирует к внимательному исследованию роли матери и ее значащего отсутствия в жизни героев. Опираясь на традиционные представления о материнстве, антропологические и социологические труды, а также работы исследователей квир-литературы, в настоящей статье я попытаюсь провести анализ образа матери в романах Микиты Франко.
Mikita Franko, autor trzech powieści zakwalifikowanych przez krytyków jako queer-literatura dla młodych dorosłych, zadebiutował na rosyjskim rynku literackim w 2020 roku. Wychowany w Kazachstanie w rodzinie jednopłciowej, Franko jeszcze przed 24 lutego 2022 był krytykiem reżimu Władimira Putina; również po agresji Federacji Rosyjskiej na Ukrainę nie zaprzestał krytycznych komentarzy w mediach społecznościowych. Powieści młodego pisarza poruszają problematykę poszukiwania własnej tożsamości i życia w nietolerancyjnym społeczeństwie. Przedstawione w utworach rodziny nietradycyjne (jednopłciowa, monoparentalna) borykają się z różnego rodzaju trudnościami, najbardziej dotkliwe odczuwanymi przez bohaterów w wieku dojrzewania. Franko odzwierciedla aktualne przemiany społeczne, pokazując alternatywne modele rodzin i zestawiając je z tradycyjnymi wzorcami. Warto podkreślić, że sportretowane przez pisarza rodziny składają się przede wszystkim z mężczyzn, co zachęca do wnikliwego przyjrzenia się roli matki i jej znaczącej nieobecności w życiu bohaterów. W oparciu o tradycyjne wyobrażenia o macierzyństwie, a także prace antropologiczne i socjologiczne oraz badaczy queer-literatury, w niniejszym artykule podejmę próbę analizy obrazu matki w wymienionych wyżej powieściach.

Wackwitz entwirft in seinen Texten das Projekt einer Dekolonisation Mitteleuropas, das auch die Dekonstruktion der heteronormativen Geschlechterordnung als Dispositiv der Macht miteinschließt.
The paper discusses Wackwitz’s Novels and Essays with postcolonial and queer theories to point out how Wackwitz tells European history as a colonial history from the 20th century until today. Wackwitz designs the project of decolonization of Central and Eastern Europe including the deconstruction of the heteronormative gender order as a dispositive of power.

Part Two: Queer Theory and Gay and Lesbian StudiesThe second part of the paper deals with the problems of the history of homosexuality and other non-normative sexualities in the framework of the Old Polish writings. It has been based on the practical experience and dilemmas of the authors who have recently published a book Homoseksualność staropolska. Przyczynek do badań (Old Polish Homosexuality. A Contribution, 2012). Numerous controversies, such as the application of queer theory versus gay and lesbian studies approach, have been discussed taking into consideration their methodological usefulness with regard to the historical Old Polish texts. Preference has been given to traditional gay and lesbian studies, not queer criticism, as the later may lead to numerous misunderstandings and misinterpretations owing to the indefinite, secondary, doubtful and oppressive character of most available original texts in question, which has been fully exemplified.

The article attempts to describe homoerotic and non-heteronormative motifs mainly in Witkacy’s novels and, in a limited way, also in his plays (The Beelzebub Sonata and Maciej Korbowa and Bellatrix). The author refers to categories of bi-curiousness, semi-vir, abjection and phantasmal scenario, tracking the relation between decadence as ideology and decadence as homosexuality, and stating a thesis that Witkacy was a queer writer. The homoerotic scenes analyzed by the author, bearing similarities in structure and language, are described as representing two separate “phantasmal scenarios” in Witkacy’s literary imagination.

Bloom’s theory is treated as an immanentist one, i.e. text/aesthetics/personality-oriented, which is specific to the period in which the theory was developed. As part of a relatively new notion — “queering Holocaust studies” — the article deals with the issue of nonheteronormative forms of sexuality among Polish male former concentration camp prisoners. The analysis of selected excerpts from Mieczysław Karwacki’s book Życie wśród śmierci [lit. Life among death] (1999) is conducted with the use of the queer category as well as scholarly reflection on the topic of wartime sexuality. This strategy shows how crucial transgressive themes (concerning the homo- and heterosexual experiences of the author, touching upon his physicality and masculinity) are for the book, and how the author challenges the constraining, binary division into “female” and “male” topics of concentration camp literature. A queer reading of the book by Karwacki — someone hitherto anonymous, unknown to both readers and researchers — reveals the need to split open the martyrological, heteronormative model of war memoirs and to incorporate this kind of content into concentration-camp discourse in Poland.

Dealing with questions of gender and sexual identity from a linguistic perspective requires an explicit and detailed examination of identity itself and of the variety of identity concepts. As one can see, some linguists ignore the variety of identities or, at least, the different identity concepts when they approach gender and queer linguistics questions. The current paper aims at providing a general basis for gender and queer linguistic research by offering a detailed and profound introduction to the concept of identity. Different identity concepts will be discussed and it will be shown that the knowledge on identity and identity concepts is essential for dealing with gender and queer linguistic topics. In the end, it will become clear that the prefabricated idea of man and woman as stable and universal categories is neither useful nor justified when one deals with the relation between language and identity.

This article intends to share a very particular perspective on teacher education and educational research while asserting the inevitability, inescapability, of such local epistemological bias[1]. It discusses the hermeneutic, narrative, decolonial and performative turns and their interplay with the geocultural and political conditions in a con-text[2] which is acknowledged as highly productive (and strongly conditioning) of social meaning. On the basis of teaching and research experience, some insurgent, gentle moves have been designed as ethico-onto-epistemological gestures to experiment on concrete possibilities of fluidity and instability for master narratives. Far from naïvely believing in the “fall”, “end” or “breaking down” of these narratives, defusing them involves instead a positioning on language, narrative and discourse capable of devising provisional and changing patterns of contingent intelligibility which allow for greater exercise of civic sovereignty. Critical, decolonial and queer pedagogies actually constitute the core beliefs which—subjected to the constraints of contingency—are asked to perform this double role of both structuring and shattering grand narratives. [1] It must be noted that this positioning has implied an explicit rejection of the use of passive voice and the (impersonalized) third person in writing this article. The choice of the pronoun “we” constitutes in itself a political gesture –an exercise of rhetoric prerogative, in the terms Segato (2019), Walsh (2011), and Yedaide (2017) propose—. In addition, we affiliate to the thesis which claims that separating the personal and the political constitutes a modern technology: a culture of the non-culture (Haraway, 1997), that is to say, a maneuver that conceals the necessary political bias present in all social products, even and especially when these are self-presented as merely technical. As to our use of English in writing—though apparently contradictory with the epistemic authority we defend—it must be read simply as a gesture manifesting willingness to engage in productive dialogue with peoples who do not speak Spanish. [2] The choice of splitting the word “context” as “con-text” aims at raising awareness regarding the decisive influence that any setting exercises in meaning-making (a site should not be taken as merely ornamental or as landscape/ background but rather as an agent, productive in the construction of meaning, we argue.

At Swim, Two Boys, a 2001 novel by Jamie O’Neill, tells a story of gay teen romance in the wake of the Easter Rising. This paper considers the ways in which the characters engage in patterns of masculine behaviour in a context that excludes queer men, and the rhetorical effect of transgressive strategies to form a coherent identity. These patterns include involvement with the masculine and heteronormative nationalist movement, as well as a regime of physical exercise, and a religious upbringing in 20th-century Ireland. The strategies of broadening the practices of masculinity include their renegotiation and redefinition, as well as attempts to (re)construct the Irish and the gay canons of history and literature. These strategies, as exemplified by character development, become a rhetorical basis for the novel’s main argument for inclusiveness. This analysis deals with the central metaphors of space and continuity in the novel in the light of a struggle between identities. It also observes the tradition of parallels drawn between the emasculated position of the gay man and the Irish man at the beginning of the 20th century, and O’Neill’s rhetorical deployment of the shared telos in construction of a coherent gay Irish revolutionary identity.

Equality and freedom are the foundations of liberal democracy and the Western society. However, they can be differently defined, and their definition implicates the different conditions and shaping of both culture and society. The main line of distinction is the orientation of definitions of both equality and freedom: they can be individual-oriented or group-oriented. The philosophical dilemma about what is true freedom and true equality is also a practical problem: which definition should be applied in today’s social politics and how to integrate individuals and groups into a single multicultural postmodern society. I shall demonstrate the main conceptions and potential consequences of their application. Then I shall analyse cultural representations of those conceptions. Such representations not only reflect but also influence popular thinking. Finally, I shall try to draw some conclusions regarding the implementation of different social conceptions.

Poland as a Great Borderland in a Post-Soviet World: Poetical Point of ViewThis paper seeks to examine the characteristics of the literary space of Poland, which occupied a middle position between the West and the USSR, with particular attention to the mechanisms of representation of Poland as a great borderland in light of the catastrophes of the 20th century. Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, narratives have changed but the main concept of “Poland as a Great Borderland” still remains. While absorbing traditional elements, poetry in the post Soviet world uses new tools like “camp” to depict the liminality and carnival nature of the country. Alexander Anashevich’s poems are analysed as a vivid example of contemporary perceptions of this centuries-long intercultural practice. Польша как «большая граница» в постсоветском мире: поэтический взглядВ данной статье анализируются устойчивые характеристики художественного пространства Польши, которая занимала позицию медиатора между Западом и СССР. Poetycki punkt widzenia.Artykuł ma na celu zbadanie cech przestrzeni kulturowej Polski, która swego czasu odbierana była jako ta, zajmująca pozycję mediatora pomiędzy Zachodem a ZSRR. W artykule przede wszystkim kładzie się nacisk na zbadanie mechanizmów reprezentacji Polski jako „Wielkiego Pogranicza” w świetle katastrof XX wieku. Od czasu rozpadu Związku Radzieckiego narracje uległy zmianie, ale koncepcja „Polski jako Wielkiego Pogranicza” nadal pozostaje aktualna. Choć poezja w przestrzeni postradzieckiej wciąż zwrócona jest przede wszystkim w stronę tradycyjnych dla niej form, to coraz częściej sięga ona po nowe estetyczne rozwiązania, takie jak np. Kamp, aby wskazać na liminalny i karnawałowy charakter polskiej przestrzeni kulturowej. Wiersze Aleksandra Anaszkiewicza są w artykule analizowane jako żywy przykład współczesnej percepcji tych wielowiekowych interkulturowych praktyk.

W Córkach Dancingu (2015) Agnieszki Smoczyńskiej bohaterki-syreny samą swoją obecnością naruszają obowiązujący – patriarchalny i heteronormatywny – porządek społeczny. Ów film to kino wielkiej odmowy, przykład feministycznego i queerowego kontr-kina, które każe nam spojrzeć na rzeczywistość przez pryzmat potworów i niesie ze sobą obietnicę innego życia, porządku i pragnienia. Jagielski sytuuje film Smoczyńskiej w kontekście, po pierwsze, kampowej estetyki oraz cielesnych i abiektalnych gatunków (horroru, musicalu i melodramatu), po drugie zaś – negatywnych afektów: niespełnionej miłości, smutku, depresji, żalu, utraty czy gniewu. Koncentruje się on na obrazach potwornych, pokawałkowanych ciał oraz sadomasochistycznych, melodramatycznych i muzycznych performance’ów. „Wsteczność” – kampowa estetyka, abiektalne ciała, „słabe” afekty, niemodne artefakty – prowadzi widzów Córek Dancingu, jak dowodzi autor, w stronę utopii, nadziei i przyszłości.
In Agnieszka Smoczyńska’s The Lure (Córki Dancingu, 2015) the siren heroines, by their very presence, violate the dominating - patriarchal and heteronormative - social order. This film is a cinema of great refusal, an example of a feminist and queer counter-cinema, which makes us look at reality through the prism of monsters and brings with it the promise of a different life, order and desire. Jagielski situates Smoczyńska’s film in the context of, firstly, camp aesthetics and bodily and abject genres (horror, musical and melodrama), and second - negative affects: unrequited love, sadness, depression, grief, loss or anger. He focuses on images of monstrous, fragmented bodies and sadomasochistic, melodramatic and musical performances. “Backwardness” - camp aesthetics, abnormal bodies, “weak” affects, unfashionable artefacts - lead the viewers of The Lure, as the author shows, towards utopia, hope and the future.

The article serves as an analysis of Familia, a Polish independent fiction podcast from 2020 produced by the Teraz Poliż theatre as a response to increase of state supported homophobic propaganda in the recent years. By pointing out similarities and differences between the podcast in question and mainstream Polish audio series, as well as drawing comparisons to popular globally distributed independent audio fiction produced in English, the author aims to prove the unique position of Familia as a sole representative of a politically conscious podcast drama presenting a specifically Polish perspective on queer emancipation. The author then proceeds to analyse the narrative content of the podcast, presenting the ways in which the story plays with elements of traditional, Polish national identity, reframing them via a radical lens as potential symbolic tools for LGBTQ+ emancipation and antifascist resistance in everyday life, while at the same time warning of the limited scope of use for such tools.

El Nuevo Cine Español empleó frecuentemente la mirada de los niños para mostrar los efectos traumáticos de la guerra civil y la postguerra en la sociedad española. La crítica vio en estos niños figuras propicias para construir alegorías políticas en las que esos niños, como la propia España, crecían marcados por el pasado represivo y, simultáneamente, representaban la esperanza de un futuro emergente. Un rasgo prominente de este discurso es que asume que estos filmes son historias de “niños inocentes”. En este ensayo, argumento que ese discurso se ha convertido en dominante a expensas de aspectos de la subjetividad de los niños protagonistas como su sexualidad, que queda silenciada al privilegiar el mito de la inocencia infantil. Apoyándome en las herramientas de la teoría queer, analizo tres filmes que cuestionan las implicaciones heteronormativas de este concepto de inocencia infantil. En Cría cuervos (1976), Carlos Saura esboza un retrato queer de la “niña inocente” al presentar su sexualidad no necesariamente unida a la lógica reproductiva que sustenta el orden heterosocial. En la última sección, analizo cómo Jaime de Armiñán ofrece en El amor del capitán Brando (1974) y El nido (1980) un replanteamiento de las relaciones intergeneracionales alejadas del espectro del abuso infantil (y de las narrativas góticas de villanos y víctimas) con las que estas relaciones son típicamente conceptualizadas. Al cuestionar el modelo secuencial de desarrollo sexual, estos dos filmes presentan a los niños como sujetos deseantes con voluntad para expresar y negociar sus impulsos sexuales y sus afectos.
The Nuevo Cine Español often employed the gaze of children as an effective strategy to show the traumatic effects of events such as the Civil War and Francoism on the Spanish society. Spanish film critics considered children apt figures to be constructed as political allegories. The children, like Spain itself, were haunted by the repressive past and, simultaneously, constituted the hope for an emerging future. This view assumes that these films are stories of “childhood innocence.” This essay argues that this scholarly discourse has become prevailing at the expense of overlooking significant aspects of the subjectivity of these celluloid children. One of those aspects is their sexuality, which has been virtually erased to privilege the myth of childhood innocence. Drawing on the critical lens of queer theory, I analyze three films that question the heteronormative implications of this myth of childhood innocence. In Cría cuervos (1976), Carlos Saura delineates a queer portrait of the “innocent girl” by presenting her sexuality not necessarily tied to the logic of reproduction that underpins the heterosocial order. In the last section of the essay, I examine how Jaime de Armiñán offers in El amor del capitán Brando (1974) and El nido (1980) a rethinking of cross-generational relationships dislodged from the spectre of child sexual abuse (and from gothic narratives of villains and victims) through which these bonds are usually conceptualized. Questioning the sequential model of sexual development, these two films represent children as desiring subjects in their own right with agency to express and negotiate their affects and sexual impulses.

The article describes the phenomenon of the art of failure. Traditional narrative focuses on the experience of winning, while marginalizing everything that is weak, mediocre, lost. The change comes with the end of art understood as a decomposition of the historical structures organizing artistic discourse (cf. Arthur C. Danto, Gianni Vattimo, Jean-Luc Nancy). In the post-historical plurilogue, the art of failure becomes a means of expression of the groups which have been traditionally excluded (Judith Halberstam). This in turn leads to a multi-level game between the participants of cultural life and its institutions. The author goes on to present and analyse specific examples of the art of failure accentuating their subversive-emancipatory potential.
Przedmiotem artykułu jest opis zjawiska sztuki porażki. Tradycyjna narracja stawia w centrum doświadczenie sukcesu, marginalizując jednocześnie to, co słabe, przeciętne, przegrane. Zmiana następuje wraz z końcem sztuki rozumianym jako rozpad historycznych struktur organizujących dyskurs artystyczny (Arthur C. Danto, Gianni Vattimo, Jean-Luc Nancy). W posthistorycznym wielogłosie sztuka porażki staje się środkiem ekspresji grup zwyczajowo wykluczanych (Judith Halberstam), co prowadzi do wielopoziomowej gry między uczestnikami życia kulturalnego, a jego instytucjami. W dalszej części artykułu autor przedstawia i analizuje poszczególne przykłady sztuki porażki, akcentując ich subwersywno-emancypacyjny potencjał.

The author presents a survey of the mode of functioning of the category of failure in the context of phenomena describes as the anti-social turn in queer theory. In the focus of analysis there are, among others, works by Leo Bersani, Lee Edelman, José Esteban Muňoz. The article is mainly devoted to the ideas presented in Judith Halberstam’s The Queer Art of Failure (2011), a study that critically revises the relation connecting queerness with the concepts of negativity, shadow feminism, and designs a new perspective for queer research in popular culture, referring to Stuart Hall’s concept of low theory, and to Antonio Gramsci’s culture analysis.

This breakthrough exerted an influence not only on the way of constructing gay characters, but on the whole represented world in Polish prose after 1989.

Artykuł przedstawia analizę i interpretację (w konwencji close reading) opowiadania Witolda Gombrowicza Pamiętnik Stefana Czarnieckiego z tomu Pamiętnik z okresu dojrzewania z 1933 roku (zamieszczonego po wojnie w tomie Bakakaj). Autor interpretuje to opowiadanie jako opowieść o życiu z piętnem, które wynika ze społecznego działania antysemityzmu. Jednocześnie jednak wskazuje, że występujące w tekście konceptualizacje „rasy” bardzo wyraźnie i często łączą się z rozważaniami dotyczącymi męskości i niemęskości głównego bohatera. Autor dowodzi – powołując się na prace historyczne (George L. Mosse) oraz teoretyczno-historycznoliterackie (Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Alan Sinfeld) – że „niemęskość” łączy narracje dotyczące żydowskości i homoseksualności. Ta druga kwestia może ukrywać się pod pierwszą, co jednocześnie stanowi aporię tekstu Witolda Gombrowicza. Poprzez przywołanie książek biograficznych (Tadeusz Kępiński, Ewa Siedlecka) autor sugeruje nieoczywisty, lecz głęboko autobiograficzny wymiar opowiadania.
The article presents the analysis and interpretation (in the form of a close reading) of Witold Gombrowicz’s story: Diary of Stefan Czarniecki from the volume Diary of Adolescence 1933 (included after the Second World War in the volume Bakakaj). The author interprets the story as narrative about life with the stigma that results from the social effects of anti-Semitism. However, he shows that the conceptualizations of “race” are often very clearly combined with the considerations about masculinity and effeminacy of the main hero. The author shows – referring to the historical works (George L. Mosse) and theoretical and literary criticism (Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Alan Sinfeld) that “effiminacy” combines narratives about Jewishness and male homosexuality in a complex way, which at the same time constitutes the aporia of Gombrowicz’s text. Author suggests not obvious, but deeply autobiographical dimension of the story by referring to the biographical books (Tadeusz Kępiński, Ewa Siedlecka).

This article is an attempt to frontally pose a question queer theory gravitates around, yet never effectively spells out: what is a togetherness of those who have nothing in common but their desire to undo group ties? First, I consider the take-up of Lacan’s ethical experiment in Seminar VII, the Ethics of Psychoanalysis by queer theorists. I contend that queer theory has not given Lacan’s interpretation of Antigone its full import, which demands its placement in the philosophical tradition of the West brought to its highest fruition in Kant. I further contend, however, that to do so does not quite offer a solution to the queer problem, for, as contemporary debate on the political import of Antigone shows, the purity of her desire does not immediately translate into a sustainable politics. Lacan himself was faced with the problem of translating his ethics into a politics after his “excommunication” from the psychoanalytic establishment, and came to falter before it. Nevertheless, Lacan’s efforts allow us to pose the undoubtedly queer question of how to group together those whose only attribute is to undo group ties. Responding to the unanswerable demands of a theory and a practice that allows us to answer that question, I propose the figure of the smoker’s communism, as elaborated upon by Mladen Dolar, as a preliminary queer suggestion as to how we might go about mitigating the gap between Lacan’s ethical brilliance and his admitted political failure.

The created world of Ada Palmer’s Terra Ignota series depicts a future society where gender identity has undergone a process of uniformisation, resulting in the erasure of gendered language. The novels take the form of a confessional (a recounting of the events of the past) which are published in the future society without the express consent of the other characters taking part in the depicted course of events. The narrator, in a motivated show of re bellion against their society’s current ideology (discussed both at the beginning of the series and as they progress with the narration), reinscribes gendered pronouns onto the unknowing characters; however, this is done on an arbitrary basis, which the narrator does not always discuss. The present paper aims to emphasize the growing number of LGBT+ novels published and the impossibility of transposing them into Romanian due to the lack of a gender-neutral pronoun that does not default to the masculine. The paper analyses Too Like the Lightning by Ada Palmer in order to specify the various nuances that would be lost in the cultural adaptation and translation of the novel into Romanian, a translation which has yet to occur, given the complexity and constraints of the novel and the depicted ideology behind it.

I begin this bilingual (Bosnian-English) hybrid (scholarly-personal-fictional) essay, with my search for queer languages of my own, a fraught, complex process both due to my personal circumstances of immigration, and the larger history of suppression of queer expression in the Balkans and beyond. For the throughline of the discussion, I use the relatively recent portmanteau in English, bussy (boy+pussy for the anus), that has given birth to a wealth of Internet memes often featuring similar coinages, and my attempt to find its equivalents in several other languages. English and Bosnian will alternate, with their subcategories ranging from academic to confessional — so only those who read both will be able to understand everything. I first look at the Soviet Russian gay slang recorded by Vladimir Kozlovsky and then move to a fuller discussion of the Turkish queer jargon named Lubunca, which like its Greek counterpart Kaliardá, has a prominent corpus of Romani borrowings. Some of these words appear in an almost identical form, with the same or similar meanings, in a number of European languages that I am familiar with: Bosnian, English, French, and German. While my queerness does not happen to provide a sense of linguistic belonging, it does enable me to note a much-neglected postcolonial queer aspect of the European language map, the Romani element, which I happily write about in the essay. As for bussy and its translations, I argue that such terms – playfully confusing and reassigning holes in English and other languages, in recent and distant times – present occasions for queerer, more pleasurable and expansive imaginings of human bodies, desires, and the world around us.

Gay and Lesbian Studies: Reactivation My article encourages rethinking of LGBT studies legacy, a discipline which does not exist in the Polish university, yet it received a doubtful reputation. The popular narrative opposes contemporary lesbian and gay studies to queer theory – LGBT studies is claimed to be transhistorical, essentialist and anachronical. In my paper I argue that that approach is mistaken and I provide for positive arguments in favour of a critical return to the lesbian and gay scholarship. These four arguments are as following: interrelations with cultural studies; interest in sexuality and operations of the market; understanding and celebration of popular culture; creative tensions between LGBT studies and queer theory.

This essay discusses two examples of contemporary Filipino cinema – The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros (Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros), Auraeus Solito’s directoral debut, and Joel C. Lamangan’s Zsazsa Zaturnnah: Ze Moveeh. More divides than binds these films together, especially in terms of genre. The first is a comedy-drama, the latter – a musical adaptation of a fantasy comic book. What binds them together is the fact that both main characters are bakla – Filipino gays, although the word is very difficult to translate into Polish. It refers both to a “gay“ – a homosexual person who is in a relationship with another homosexual person, as well as a feminized man who performs his own sexuality and identity. Even though it would be very difficult to describe The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros and Zsazsa Zaturnnah: Ze Moveeh as masterpieces of contemporary cinema, their pertinence should be seen in the courage to speak about the issue of homosexuality in the Philippines and the undeniable uniqueness of showing the social problems of the country in this manner.

In this paper, I analyze selected art shows, that took place in Warsaw clubs (Le Madame and M25) in the early 2000s. I describe the performances of the art collective Suka Off and the play “Miss HIV” directed by Maciej Kowalewski, as well as the reception of these shows. Described actions boldly and innovatively addressed issues of human carnality and non-normative sexuality. In the article, I attempt to include these performances in a local queer history – while trying to analyze the story (which I produce) critically.

The article is a continuation of the research on the prose of Mikita Franko — a young author of queer literature who writes in Russian and comes from Kazakhstan. This time, the male figures, definitely dominant in the analyzed works, are in the center of attention. The protagonists of Franko’s three novels are considered infrom the perspective of masculinities studies, which allows them to be analyzed in the context of such categories as hegemonic masculinity, complicit masculinity, and subordinate masculinities. In the discussed novels, they take a characteristic East Slavic form. An important aspect of the works is the search for one’s own gender identity by the growing-up characters, as well as the issue of tolerance, especially current in contemporary Russia.
Статья является продолжением исследований над прозой Микиты Франко – молодого автора квир-литературы из Казахстана, который живет в России и пишет на русском языке. На этот раз в центре внимания находятся мужские персонажи, которые безусловно преобладают в анализируемых произведениях. Герои трех романов Франко рассматриваются в перспективе исследований над маскулинностью, что позволяет анализировать их в контексте гегемонной и маргинализированных моделей маскулинности. В данных произведениях они принимают характерную, восточнославянскую форму. Важным аспектом проблематики романов Франко является поиск взрослеющими героями собственной половой идентичности, а также вопрос толерантности, особенно актуальный в современной России.
Artykuł stanowi kontynuację badań nad prozą Mikity Franko – mieszkającego w Rosji i piszącego po rosyjsku, pochodzącego z Kazachstanu, młodego autora literatury queer. Tym razem w centrum uwagi znajdują się postaci mężczyzn, zdecydowanie dominujące w analizowanych utworach. Bohaterowie trzech powieści Franko rozpatrywani są w perspektywie studiów nad męskościami (masculinities studies), co pozwala podjąć ich analizę w kontekście takich kategorii jak męskość hegemoniczna (hegemonic masulinity), współuczestnicząca (complicit masculinity) oraz męskości podporządkowane (subordinate masculinities). W omawianych powieściach przyjmują one charakterystyczną wschodniosłowiańską formę. Ważny aspekt problematyki utworów stanowi poszukiwanie własnej tożsamości płciowej przez dorastających bohaterów, a także kwestia tolerancji, szczególnie aktualna we współczesnej Rosji.

The essay calls for filling a gap in the studies on Warsaw Uprising concerning the place of queer people. A recent play, Snakepit by Joanna Oparek is considered, and the “scandal” surrounding Elżbieta Janicka’s academic work Festung Warschau is analysed, but the main source of understanding non-normative masculinities and sexualities is Miron Białoszewski’s Memoir of the Warsaw Uprising. The author offers a “paranoid” reading of traces, suggestions, allusions, and “illogical” fragments to build a working metaphor of queer acquaintances as an alternative “map” without the map. Finally he invokes the role of the picaresque narrative convention in representing such paranoid queer relationships.

Artykuł proponuje interpretacje słabo opisanej powieści Izabeli Filipiak „Alma” (2003) w kontekście queer female gothic i dyskursu o „kobiecej potworności” zaini-cjowanego przez „Frankensteina” Mary Shelley. Autor dystansuje się wobec meta-tematycznej uwagi genologicznej Filipiak, że jej powieść reprezentuje cyberpunk, wskazuje natomiast na liczne zbieżności z książką „Skin shows” Judith Halberstam. W drugiej części artykułu analizowane są odniesienia gnostyckie powieści Filipiak, trawestującej „Hymn o perle” w feministycznym ujęciu. Osobny akapit poświęcony został teoretycznemu ustaleniu ogólnych relacji między gotycyzmem a gnozą.
The article proposes an interpretations of Izabela Filipiak’s little-known novel Alma (2003) in the context of queer female gothic and the “feminine monstrosity” discourse inspired by Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein”. The author disagrees with Filipiak’s metathematic genological remark that the novel represents cyberpunk, while pointing to numerous points of convergence with the book “Skin Shows” by Judith Halberstam. The second part of the article analyses gnostic references in Filipiak’s novel, which is a feminist rewriting of “Hymn of the Pearl”. A separate paragraph is devoted to theoretical determination of the general relationship between the gothic and gnosis.

Artykuł podejmuje próbę odpowiedzi na pytania o podstawy filozoficzne i myślowe queer theory oraz prezentuje głównych myślicieli, którzy wywarli znaczący wpływ na rozwój performatywności w ruchach feministycznych. Przedstawiam genezę i opis procesu subwersji oraz dekonstrukcji pojęć takich jak płeć, małżeństwo, kobiecość, heteronormatywność, binarność, seksualność i ostatecznie queer. Polemizuję między innymi z poglądami Judith Butler, która próbuje opisać pojęcie queer, charakteryzując je jako odtwarzanie performatywnych wypowiedzi, interpolowanych, stanowiących moc wiążącą przypadkowych, obalalnych, rozsadzających istniejące konwencje. Artykuł zestawia powyższe zagadnienia z Katolicką Nauką Społeczną i antropologią Kościoła Katolickiego. Wskazuje na obszary tworzącej się na naszych oczach nowej rzeczywistości.
The paper searches for the philosophical and conceptual fundaments of the queer theory and its influential proponents who inspired the growth of the feminist movement initiatives. I present the process of subversion and deconstruction of such notions as sex, marriage, feminity, heteronormativity, binary identity, sexuality and, finally, queer. The article contains a critique of Judith Butler’s ideas. She presented the term „queer” as reproduction of interpolated random and fluid statements which reject the traditional order of things. The paper also juxtaposes these propositions with the Catholic Social Teaching and anthropology and explores the areas where the on-going intellectual processes shape our reality.

This article explores the poetry of Marilyn Hacker and Carl Phillips by drawing attention to the poems' representations of same-sex couples living in domestic space via two basic strategies. First, the article examines how Hacker's Love, Death, and the Changing of the Seasons dramatizes the performative work of "doing coupledom” as opposed to depicting same-sex lovers intent upon inclusion within the normative frame of marriage. The second approach the article takes is to examine the ways that Phillips's Cortège describes intimate, often unflattering, love narratives that reveal a queer sensitivity to the subject of joy/pain/desire, reflective of the degree to which queers are forced to meditate on such topics as why, how, and whom one can desire. Phillips seeks to describe a queer sensitivity, an alertness and aliveness to social and sexual relations implicit in many queer discourses on the subject of love. In their respective poetics, Love, Death and Cortège contemplate ordinary domestic space as a site of performative processing of partnered relationships, and they recommend queer living and loving practices sensitive to the complexities of joy/pain/desire.
Artykuł jest spojrzeniem na poezję Marilyn Hacker i Carla Phillipsa, w ramach którego autor proponuje dwie strategie analizy reprezentacji jednopłciowych par żyjących pod wspólnym dachem. Po pierwsze, artykuł bada, w jaki sposób zbiór Marilyn Hacker Love, Death, and the Changing of the Seasons ukazuje performatywność „bycia parą”, w przeciwieństwie do takich opisów jednopłciowego partnerstwa, które nastawione są na włączanie w normatywne ramy małżeństwa. Drugie podejście dotyczy zawartych w Cortege Phillipsa opisów intymnych, często nieprzyjemnych narracji miłosnych, które ukazują odmieńczą wrażliwość podmiotu radości/bólu/pożądania, przez co Phillips wskazuje, jak bardzo odmieńcy są zmuszeni zastanawiać się nad tym, dlaczego, jak i kogo można pożądać. Phillips usiłuje opisać odmieńczą wrażliwość, czujną świadomość społecznych i seksualnych relacji wpisanych w wiele kłirowych dyskursów na temat miłości. W swojej poetyce, Love, Death... i Cortège skupiają się odpowiednio na przestrzeni domowej jako miejscu performatywnego „przerabiania” związków partnerskich oraz na praktykach życiowych i miłosnych uwzględniających złożoność radości, bólu i pożądania.

W artykule opisuję różnorodne tekstualne strategie polskich, homoseksualnych dzienników z pierwszej połowy XX wieku. Omawiam kwestię ich gatunkowego uwikłania w relacji do założycielskich, dla gejowskiej autobiografii, tekstów André Gide’a i Oscara Wilde’a oraz wskazuję na podobieństwa i różnice w sposobach konstruowania homoseksualnej podmiotowości. Na podstawie spostrzeżeń Judith Butler, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick i Michela Foucaulta, wskazuję na performatywną sprzeczność intymistycznych gatunków wywiedzionych z autobiograficznej tradycji wyznania w odniesieniu do sytuacji homoseksualnego podmiotu, a także rekonstruuję reguły jego tekstualnej widzialności na przykładzie dzienników Jarosława Iwaszkiewicza i Jerzego Zawieyskiego.
In the article the author describes diverse, textual strategies of Polish homosexual diaries from the 20th century. The author discusses the issue of their complex genetical relation to the founding texts of gay autobiography by André Gide and Oscar Wilde and he is pointing at resemblances and differences in the ways they construct the homosexual subjectivity. Basing on observations by Judith Butler, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick and Michel Foucault, the author is pointing at the performative contradiction of genres deduced from the autobiographical tradition of confessing in the situation of homosexual subject, and I am also reconstructing rules of textual visibilities of the homosexuality on the example of diaries of Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz and Jerzy Zawieyski.

Artykuł jest recenzją książki Dezorientacje: Antologia polskiej literatury queer (Warszawa 2020). Autor omawia ideowe założenia tomu oraz jego zawartość, komentując zwłaszcza wybór fragmentów tekstów teatralnych. Zwraca uwagę na nieco anachroniczne wykorzystanie metodologii queer studies, zawężające ją do analizy modeli (homo)seksualności. Doceniając edytorski trud redaktorów i akcentując potrzebę tego typu inicjatyw w polskiej kulturze, proponuje drobne przesunięcia w podejściu do literatury mniejszościowej, które mogłyby pomóc zdekonstruować tradycyjne sposoby ustanawiania historii literatury i kultury.
This article is a review of the book Dezorientacje: Antologia polskiej literatury queer [Disorientations: An Anthology of Polish Queer Literature] (Warsaw 2020). The author discusses the ideological premises of the volume and presents its contents, commenting in particular on the selection of excerpts from theater texts. He points out that the methodology of queer studies is used here in a somewhat anachronistic way, narrowed down to the analysis of models of (homo)sexuality. Appreciating the editors’ efforts and emphasizing the need for such initiatives in Polish culture, he suggests minor shifts in the approach to minority literature, which could help deconstruct the traditional ways of establishing the history of literature and culture.

Queer Cinema: From cross-dressing to transgender films The article offers a general view on queer in cinema, focusing on 1990s, and the New Queer Cinema, and selected transgender films. It addresses the issue of both gender and sexuality, in terms of queer theory and queer film studies. There is a short introduction to the history of representation of queer identity in cinema, including classical and genre films. Meanwhile it is a kind of popularization of fi lm analysis from the queer perspective, as the one represented by Alexander Doty. The next part of the article examine the tradition of recent queer cinema, including The New Queer Cinema and films of individual authors. It is shown that both in terms of its aesthetics and narration, queer cinema tends to re-imagine and re-create ways of representations, against the conventional fixed models of masculine and feminine, dictated by dominant orders and ideology. There are also two separate parts dedicated to the phenomena of cross-dressing, and to transgender on screen. Concluding, the article presents different aspects of the issue of queer cinema, exposing some of its common features, such as: an ironic self-awareness associated with post-modern representation; new conceptualization of self as transgender, transsexual, drag; crossings and transgressing of gender and/or sex boundaries, whether temporary or permanent, on the level of representation or anatomically.

Tekst prezentuje związek pomiędzy pojęciem „queer” a pierwszoosobową opowieścią u Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick. Wychodząc od rozumienia queer jako ruchu w poprzek, zwróconego w stronę wielości, staram się pokazać, czym jest queerowa autobiografia (na przykładzie A Dialoge on Love, 1997), a także umieścić ją w kontekście przeobrażeń teoretycznych w myśli Sedgwick, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem odejścia od krytyki podejrzeń (paranoicznej) w stronę teorii lektury reparacyjnej – wspólnotowej i afirmatywnej. Analogicznie pokazuję, że stawką jest nie tylko lektura, ale również fundamentalne przeobrażenie projektu pisarskiego.
The article presents some connections between Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s concept of queer and her first person academic theory. Beginning from defining queer as a process of being across, I explain what is queer autobiography (by some comments on Sedgwick’s A Dialogue on Love, 1997), and how we can relate this idea to some more theoretical transformations in Sedgwick’s general project. I am especially interesting in going beyond hermeneutics of suspicion toward reparative reading as a practice of rethinking community. The second goal is to adapt this theoretical transformation with Sedgwick’s own writings.

Powieść Katherine Dunn Geek Love z 1989 roku opisuje dzieje rodziny „nuklearnej”, to jest dwupokoleniowej, w przeszłości prowadzącej objazdowy cyrk. Narratorką jest jedna z występujących niegdyś w cyrku sióstr, która, wspominając szczęśliwe dzieciństwo, roztacza opiekę nad niedołężną matką i nad córką, nieświadomą cyrkowych dziejów swojej rodziny. Zaproponowana w tekście lektura tej powieści nawiązuje do kategorii różnicy paradoksalnie rozumianej jako podstawa podobieństwa między ludźmi, którzy różnią się między sobą w stopniu nieprzyswajalnym, ale mogą dawać świadectwo tej różnicy.
Katherinne Dunn’s 1989 novel Geek Love tells the story of a “nuclear” family (composed of parents and their children,) who used to operate a travelling circus. It is narrated by the founder’s daughter, who reminisces about her happy childhood as she looks after her senile mother and a daughter who remains unaware of the family’s past. A reading of the novel proposed herein puts forth that the category difference paradoxically becomes the basis for a sense of commonality: although the differences between people may be irreducible, people can give testimony to those differences.
