This paper is a study of the essential property of human existence – transcendence, whose characteristics can be derived from Karl Stern’s works. By criticizing the model of contemporary psychology for its mechanistic character, Stern tries to prove that it is psychoanalysis that enables us to found a humanistic base for understanding human transcendence towards God. In this way, Stern passes over the fact that the humanistic sense of transcendence was established in Victor Frankl’s philosophy of existence. Stern blemishes the basic meanings of Freud’s psychoanalysis, which, as such, is not suitable for Stern’s procedure of humanization.

The purpose of this paper is to present Eugenia Sokolnicka, the Polish analyst who belongs to the first generation of psychoanalysts. The article provides an overview of Sokolnicka’s clinical and theoretical work and explores her contribution to psychoanalysis as a brilliant clinician and a precursor of child analysis. As a pupil of C.G. Jung, S. Freud, and S. Ferenczi she has played an significant part in development and popularization of Freud’s method in literary and medical circles. Sokolnicka was an initiator of unsuccessful attempt of forming a Polish psychoanalytical society and participant in the process of forming psychoanalytical institutions in France. The analysis of her papers enables to present her contribution in various fields of theory and technique of psychoanalysis. Furthermore, the analysis of correspondence between S. Freud, S. Ferenczi, K. Abraham and O. Rank provides the insight into Sokolnicka’s life and personality.

The aim of the article is the psychoanalytical interpretation of Jewish Museum building in Berlin - the example of deconstractivism in architecture, as well the urban space of Berlin and the history of Germany and the Berlin Jews as manifested in the space of the city. Starting with the notion of anamorphosis, the works by Jacąues Derrida and Peter Eisenman and using Daniel Liebenskind's building of the Jewish Museum as an example, the author of the article shows the connection between deconstructivism and the urban space of Berlin. The em-phasizes the importance of empty spaces, or spaces devoid of something, for both the city space of Berlin, and the Museum's architecture, where the empty space is the space devoid of the Berlin absentees - the Jews. The description refers to formal features of deconstructivist architecture and the features of the museum building while the interpretation is rooted in Lacanian psychoanalysis and his three orders: the Real, the Symbolic and the Imaginary, as well as in his concept of the mirror stage in the development of the human psyche.

In this essay which comprises one of chapters in Frank Cioffi Freud and the Question of a Pseudoscience (Open Court, Chicago 1998, pp. 115-142) its author, the most harsh and provocative contemporary critic of psychoanalysis, has assembled reasons for concluding that psychoanalysis  is a pseudoscience. What makes this text unique among current offerings is the contrary view about a pseudoscience according to which it is constituted by methodologically defective procedures (in a sense of wilful which encompasses refined self-deception) rather than merely by formally defective theses.

The article is an attempt to introduce relationships between hermeneutics, pedagogy and psychoanalysis. The essential issue under consideration is the interpretation of topological figures as a particular tool allowing to perceive hermeneutics from the subject’s clinic perspective. The key importance for pedagogy here is the indication that both hermeneutics and psychoanalysis have a cognitive value recognising the subject in categories which exceed the traditional subject narratives, formulated from the perspective of the hermeneutic circle.

This paper juxtaposes W.R. Bion’s psychoanalytic theory of psychosis with Dadaistic works of art. The aim of this juxtaposition is to enable the reader to better understand Bion’s theory of psychosis and to propose a new approach to Dadaistic work from the perspective of psychoanalytic theory. The works of art will illustrate basic psychotic mechanisms. It is a starting point for further elaboration of Bion’s theory of thinking and his view on subjectivity. At the same time an original approach towards Dadaistic works of art will be presented, based on psychoanalytic concepts of fragmentation and symbolic equation. Essential differences between creativity and madness will be emphasized.

Are all translators murderers, pests or parasites? Are they humble or the spokespersons of a community? Are they trustworthy or traitors, or even ‘faithful bigamists’? And do translations have to be beautiful or faithful, never both? Might translation be a feminine/feminised activity because most translators are women, or because the target-language is maternal or because it embodies the paradox of the multi-skilled serving the mono-skilled? The second half of this essay focuses on the translation of psychoanalysis, especially Strachey’s brilliant yet much-criticised translation of Freud.

Is there intentionality in the inner most level of the soul? Do we have experience of what is unconscious? And, supposing that such an experience might exist, is it possible to perform reduction on it? In this regard the present paper aims to investigate, from a phenomenological point of view, the process of “raising awareness” of what is unconscious, trying to understand if there is (or if there can be) a connection between this process and the methodological concept of “reduction” developed by Husserl. Particular attention is paid to the specific type of reduction called “psychological reduction,” which, according to Husserl, provides access to the pure soul, the pure field of psychological experience.

Opis:
Both novels analysed in the article (Władysław Reymont’s Vampire written at the beginning of the 20th century and contemporary Apokryf Agłai by Jerzy Sosnowski) present the fall of a man seduced by a demonic woman. Daisy (a vampire) and Lilka¬ Agłaja (a cyborg) are capable, due to their dangerous beauty, of destroying men’s careers, family life, hapiness and sanity. In these texts femininity is traditionally described as something monstrous and dangerous. A psychoanalytical reading (which follows Klein and Freud) leads to a categorization of the sources of such stereotypical images. The mental states of the characters, as described in both novels, are very similar. The regressive symptoms are highlighted – men’s psyches regress to the paranoid and schizoid state, where primary mechanisms of defence seem to dominate. The images of the femme fatale are influenced by the projection of a split, negative object. They aim at preventing an object from final destruction. The author of the article creates a hypothesis that patriarchal culture influences the defence strategies used by the heroes of both novels. Pariarchal culture represses men that show weakness and denies them the right to be called men. However, it accepts weaknesses when they are disguised as misogynistic attitudes. If a man cannot accept weakness, as belonging to him, he must make a woman responsible for it (even on the level of subconscious defence strategies).

This article aims to introduce the Polish public to the work of Angélica Liddell, one of the best-known faces of European theatre in recent years. While the artist has been professionally active since the late 1980s and has created (as a playwright, director and main actress) a few dozen original performances, for most of her stage life she has been saying the same thing: that the only truth worth knowing is the truth coming from our unconsciousness. And although there have been times in her career when she turned her attention to the outside and made political theatre, she eventually resumed probing the depths of the human psyche, where she traces repressed content with a verve that would make Freud himself proud. And, much to our bafflement, brings it out into the open.

In the article entitled „ Psychoanalysis as a tool for sociological research - proposal for integration of approaches and research methods. Reconstruction of the main establishments of this interpretation allows to affirm, that this conceptualisation makes possible to understand a fraction of reasons of today’s popularity related to this phenomenon. Analysis of von Franz works leads to conclusion, that she comprehends divination as a constant form of natural knowledge, making use of the nonfactitive synchronicity principle and unus mundus concept. In the article was presented the interpretation of the phenomenon of irrational knowledge with consideration of ignored by empirical sciences logic of divination, and act of divination was characterised as a practical system, which simplifies for people an adaptation to social reality. This perspective allowed for the presentation of this irrational knowledge aspects, which are rarely recognised by modern humanities and social sciences, which are so often unable to clarify reasons of popularity of this kind of knowledge.

Opis:
Addressing trauma as a phenomenon which happens on the level of the human psyche and body, this article explores the impact of the interlocking nature of human lingual and bodily being in discovering a fuller possibility of interpreting and understanding woundedness. The non-transparent and problematic character of trauma calls for a hermeneutic investigation in order to gain a far-reaching insight into what happens with us and in us in traumatic experience(s). The imperative to understand the situation of affliction is an unending task which not only relies upon extant understandings but continually pro-vokes new ones. I argue that the process of healing, encompassing the spoken and bodily narrative, does not establish a secure equilibrium, but rather searches for self-restoring, healing energy and commences ever new understandings of what needs to be comprehended and healed. This article offers an examination of trauma as featured in three short stories by British authors: Rudyard Kipling, D. H. Lawrence and James Joyce, to exemplify the possibilities of literature to shed light on the intricate nature of traumatic experience. It interrogates the ways in which literature, hermeneutics and psychoanalysis meaningfully converge.

Moreover, Lacan’s subversion of structuralist theses makes any unambiguous assignment impossible. In the article, the author describes the evolution of Lacan’s theory of language and its consequences for the issue of subjectivity in psychoanalysis resulting from the use of linguistic tools.
