Opis:
Technology integration has become increasingly prevalent in language education and technology teaching tools are currently used for English instruction. In line with this trend, it is also believed to be influential in teaching and learning pronunciation. To cast an empirical light on this issue, this study aimed to analyse the influence of Virtual Reality Assisted Pronunciation Training (VRAPT) on pronunciation of young Iranian EFL learners. With respect to this, 18 low-intermediate English language learners (6-12 years old) were invited to take part in the study held in the lab at Sharif University of Technology in Iran. First, their English language pronunciation was measured by a pronunciation pre-test through Speech ace Browser. Next, in a virtual environment, during 10 sessions (each session 90 minutes), the participants received instructions on all of the pronunciation items measured in the test (consists of English vowels like /ɪ/ and /i/ and also vowels of /ʊ/ and /u/) through the Virtual Reality (VR) game administered by a humanoid robot. The results of a paired samples t-test revealed that there was a significant difference between learners’ performance before and after the training sessions. This paper recommends that simulated games within virtual reality could be applied in enhancing pronunciation skills of EFL learners and utilized in helping them to develop native-like pronunciation. It also generates new ways of thinking about VRAPT as an innovative teaching approach and creating an efficient and pleasurable English learning environment.

In recent years the application of computer software to the learning process has been found to be an indisputably effective tool supporting the traditional teaching methods. Particular focus has been put on the application of techniques based on speech and language processing to the second language learning. Most of the commercial self-study programs, however, do not allow for introduction of an individualized learning course by the teacher and to concentrate on segmental features only. The paper discusses the use of speech technology in the training of foreign languages’ pronunciation and prosody and defines pedagogical requirements for an effective training with CAPT systems. In this context, steps taken in the development of the intelligent tutoring system AzAR3.0 (German ‘Automat for accent reduction’) in the scope of the Euronounce project (Cylwik et al., 2008) are described with the focus on creation of the linguistic content. In response to the European Union’s call for promoting less widely spoken languages, the project focuses on German as a target language for native speakers of Polish, Slovak, Czech, and Russian, and vice versa. The paper presents the design of the speech corpus for the purpose of the tutoring system and the analysis of pronunciation errors. The results of the latter provide information which is important for Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) training on the one hand, and for automatic error detection and feedback generation on the other hand. In the end, Pitch Line software for implementation in the prosody visualization and training module of AzAR3.0 tutoring system is described.

Opis:
Many Mandarin Chinese learners, especially those whose mother tongue’s phonological system differs significantly from Chinese phonological system, find it challenging to learn pronunciation of Chinese phonemes. Yet pronunciation training in language class settings is limited. It is therefore essential to develop computeraided training system to help learners practice Chinese pronunciation without teacher’s assistance. In this article I introduce a prototype of Chinese pronunciation training system that specifically focuses on phoneme substitution errors related to aspiration of consonants. I describe feature extraction process based on multiresolution cochleagram (MRCG), a psychoacoustic model of basilar membrane excitation pattern, and architecture of recurrent neural network (RNN) used for mispronounced phonemes detection. The system achieves 96.12% and 98.58% accuracy rate in detecting phoneme substitution errors and determining aspiration length respectively. Proposed system may be particularly useful for learners of Slavic and Romance origin, since in their mother tongues aspiration is not a distinctive feature.

Possibilities and Limitations of Pronunciation Training in DaF-Teaching in Japan – An Attempt to develop Teaching and Learning Materials The aim of our research is to propose a pronunciation syllabus suitable for Japanese learners of German at universities, and to develop teaching and learning materials with phonetic explanations and exercises. The theoretical possibilities and the empirical data we have got so far provide the basis for a pronunciation syllabus for Japanese DaF learners. This consists of those phonological and phonetic features which seem to be crucial as safeguards against breakdowns in communication. Concentrating on these items is likely to be more effective than attending to every detail of German pronunciation. In this paper we explain the process of determining the „core items“ („Kernmerkmale“).

Phonetic Etudes – in the Border Area of the Linguistic Research, nevertheless for Exceeding of own Language Boundaries In the following article an attempt is made to use the etude as an exercise form by the pronunciation training, therefore to justify the introduction of phonetic etudes to the didactics of the phonetics, they have the potential to be useful und effective after all. The ‚etude‘ was originally thought as an instrumental musical composition, usually short concentrating on a technical problem, which often repeats and appears in sequences, designed to provide practice material for perfecting particular skills by playing musical instruments. However using etudes to exercise is recently not confined to the area of music, but it is expanded on the other fields of artistic creation, for example in the dramatic art as scenic etudes, in the painting as painted etudes or artistic etudes, in the cinematicart as film etudes or even in the literature as literary etudes.
