Prague school
Opis:
In 19th century Prague, music could be studied at two music schools – the Prague Conservatory, founded in 1811, and the Organ School, founded in 1830. The Conservatory was devoted to the teaching of orchestral instruments and singing, while the Organ School not only taught liturgical organ playing and prepared organists and choir directors for the all-round work of organists in churches, but also attracted those interested in compositional disciplines by its emphasis on perfect mastery of music theory. Therefore, almost all 19th century Czech composers were graduates of the Prague Organ School, among them Antonín Dvořák and Leoš Janáček. The independent existence of the school was closed after sixty years. From 1890 it was merged with the Prague Conservatoire with an unchanged curriculum. The article also documents some methods of teaching and evaluating school pupils.

Opis:
The Prague agglomeration consisted of four medieval towns: the Old Town, the New Town, Mala Strana and also Hradčany. The article throws light on the relations, often dramatic, between the town halls of the Old and New Towns (the fi rst was built in 1338, the second before 1374) in the 15th century. An uprising broke out in the New Town in 1419. The insurgents forced their way into the town hall and defenestrated 10–13 men. In May 1420 the communes appointed new councillors for the first time. In August, on the initiative of Jan Želivský, a general meeting of the communes was convened in the Old Town hall and new councillors were appointed. In June 1421 armed action by the townsmen of the New Town resulted in the town council’s resignation. Both towns were combined into a single body governed from the Old Town hall, of course, under Želivský’s dictatorship. However, the chancelleries of both towns remained independent and maintained town ledgers in parallel. During that period the importance of the town councils’ dropped to an alltime low, political decisions were taken by Želivský, without the participation of either of the town halls (in 1422 Želivský was imprisoned in the Old Town hall and subsequently decapitated). The association of Prague communes disintegrated at the turn of 1423/24. Sigismund Korybut ruled in the period from 1422 to 1427. The Duke established a new joint council for the Old and New Towns, consisting of 18 councillors from both towns. Korybut was overthrown, but everything seems to point to the fact that later both towns were once again unified; however, from August 1428 at the latest, the councils again became independent. In 1434 thanks to the support of Bohemian lords, the townsmen of the Old Town captured the New Town. But in 1436, the Holy Roman Emperor, Sigismund of Luxembourg, who had already accepted a pledge of allegiance from the townsmen of Prague, freed the citizens of the New Town from the Old Town’s hegemony. In 1483 another uprising began in Prague, which was referred to as the epilogue to the Hussite revolution, which claimed new victims from among the authorities of both town halls. Forty years later there were further tensions in Prague.

The paper attempts an evaluation of the variability of frosty days (t,.", < Q0C) and' days with severe frost (t,.", <-IQ°C) in Cracowand Prague for the period 1845/46-1995/96 in relation to the atmospheric circulation factors. The correlation coefficient for the numbers of frosty days in Cracow and Prague is higher than the same coefficient for the numbers of days with severe frost. Both frosty days and days with severe frost occur most often together with high pressure centre and anticyclonic wedge in Central Europe and also with high pressure centre over Scandinavia. Recently there is a decreasing tendency in the occurrence of both types of days, which is the result of the atmospheric circulation and anthropogenic factors.

Opis:
This paper investigates the themes of walking and wandering in Paul Leppin’s novel Severins Gang in die Finsternis by analysing their occurrence and aesthetic connotation. The act of walking and the exploration of urban landscape are strongly present in the novel, which is set in Prague and is characterised by several depictions of the milieu; therefore, the text has been analysed from this angle in numerous previous studies, mainly mentioning the elements of flanerie appearing in the narration. The present study discusses the problematic aspects in defining the protagonist of the novel as flaneur, suggesting alternative interpretations that can describe the aesthetic experience of Severin’s walking more exhaustively. The analysis mainly follows Francesco Careri’s research on the aesthetics of walking, which are summarized in his work Walkscapes. Walking as Aesthetic Practice. Following the same methodological approach, the paper also analyses occurrences of the act of walking other than Severin’s walkabouts, focusing especially on the presence of processions throughout the text.

Opis:
The meaning of the Warsaw Pact intervention in August 1968 soon became a matter of political manipulation. The spontaneously shared notion of the “occupation” quickly turned into its very antithesis. The postulate of the “friendly assistance” of the Soviet Army gradually promoted on the official level played a key role in the policy of the so-called consolidation. As a consequence, the Prague Spring was denigrated as an attempted counterrevolution. The memory of the August “occupation” disappeared from the public sphere: It went underground or was pushed into the private sphere. The idea of the heroic and victorious fight against the counterrevolution, so much cherished by leftist radicals, reached its peak by the end of 1970 when it was confirmed by an official document. After that, it started losing its momentum as if the Prague Spring and the August events were rather due to fall into oblivion. But in 1989, the relevance of the 21st August suddenly reemerged in public protests against the Communist régime, which were taking place on that date. The article explores the coexistence/parallel lives of the three conflicting memories of the August 68 during the post-August history of normalization mentioned below: the privatized memory of occupation, the radical memory of fraternal assistance, and the policy of oblivion.

Cities and metropolises are progressively adopting the concept of the ‘creative city’, in an attempt to differentiate themselves from other cities, and as a remedy for problems of urban development in the postindustrial economy. The creative city combines traditional cultural products, cultural services and heritage with the emerging creative industries such as media, entertainment or architecture. This paper examines how the creative city concept is being developed in Central Europe, analysing Wrocław as an example of the Polish creative city, compared with Budapest, as a Creative City of Design and Prague, as a Creative City of Literature.

Although Vogler's stay in Prague was relatively short, there are nevertheless many things to write about this time. Being employed as a professor at a renowned university is something, that most of the people who got in such a position have for their lifetime. So it's not very common that Vogler didn't stay in this position, but just left after only one year. On the one hand, it's understandable, because Vogler lived rarely one year solely in one town and therefore this one year in Prague is already an unusual long time for him. On the other hand there's the question, what Vogler planned, when he came to Prague and wanted to have an employment as professor. Maybe he really wanted to settle down as pensioner for a longer time? Or should this professorship at the renowned Charles University of Prague only be another honouring in his collection? For the fact, that Vogler wanted to settle down in Prague, there's also the argument, that he organised the costly transport of his Orchestrion to Prague and afterwards let it build for a longer time in a hall, which he also needed to have rebuilt. In the end, as a resolution of failed concerts, an organ modification with many negative critics and empty lectures, Vogler left Prague. He was an innovative organ and music theorist, but too much, so that he sometimes totally worked without any empirical values. Such a characteristic and the fact, that he travelled big distances and areas, makes him one of the most interesting persons of european music history.

Opis:
The main aim of this paper is the analysis of trends and processes in the religious landscape of the Czech capital of Prague in the period of political transformation after 1989. Czech society has been secularised to an extent unprecedented in the rest of Europe. The paper uses also the term religious landscape in a broader sense mostly as both territory and society of a selected larger territorial unit. The general trend of secularisation of modern Czech (Prague) society is accompanied by diversification (almost atomisation) of religious communities. The paper attempts to describe the main reasons for the transformation in religiosity in Prague after the fall of communism between 1991 and 2011 as well as outlines the fundamental consequences of these changes. The city of Prague has also experienced regional differentiation of religious development, evidenced by the quantitatively dwindling Roman Catholic Church on the one hand, and the growth of the Brethren Evangelical Free Church on the other. The rising importance of alternative religiosity is probably associated with the trend of secularisation of society and thus the transformation of the original Christian society into a society with prevailing occult or esoteric knowledge.

The 50th anniversary of the Prague Spring is marked in 2018. Today, the events of 1968 retain their significance for relations between Russia, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The subject of the research is the impact of the events of the Prague Spring in 1968 on current relations between Russia and the countries of the former Czechoslovakia. The author analyzes in detail the key causes and consequences of the Prague Spring, as well as the current state of Russian-Czech and Russian-Slovak relations in conditions of anti-Russian sanctions.Analyzing the role of the attitudes of modern Czechs and Slovaks to the events of 1968, the author concluded that for the citizens of the Czech Republic and Slovakia, they are more historical. Condemning the entry of Warsaw Pact troops into Prague, Russia closed this chapter in its relations with the countries of the former Czechoslovakia. At the same time, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, becoming separate countries, overcame the problems in their relations in the 20th century. The article demonstrates that the deterioration of bilateral relations between Russia and the Czech Republic and Russia and Slovakia is due not to unsatisfied historical claims, but to the general cooling in relations between Russia and the EU and the policy of sanctions. Today, Prague and Bratislava are forced to balance between Brussels and Moscow, seeking to ensure their national interests, which for the Czech Republic and Slovakia are inextricably linked with both the European Union and Russia. The novelty of the research lies in the study of relations between Russia, the Czech Republic and Slovakia through the prism of the evolution of their cultural and historical determinants. Thus, the author used the case study method and content analysis in his research. The theoretical basis of the research was the works of both Russian and foreign authors. The practical basis of the study was data from sociological surveys conducted in the Czech Republic and Slovakia in recent decades, as well as the evidence of eyewitnesses of the events of the Prague Spring.
