Postcolonial Studies developed in a context of an anthropological turn in a modern humanities. When in the center of interests appeared problem of difference, otherness. Postcolonial critics read and deconstruct dominating attitudes and narrations towards others which are reflected in literature. At present, Polish postcolonial critic has started analyzed Polish narration about Borderlands and deconstructed Borderlands discourse as a dominating and colonial towards countries and nations which were a part of a eastern territory of Poland. In this article author discussed features of such a discourse on the example of travel essay about Ukrainians and Ukraine by contemporary writer and publicist Pavel Laufer Ukraine from the side of the rode, some times even from the ditch. Few side road thoughts.
Постколоніальні студії (Postcolonial Studies) появилися і утвердилися у контексті антропологічного повороту в сучасній світовій гуманістиці, коли в центрі уваги опинилися проблеми різниці, відмінності, інакшості. Постколоніальна критика відчитує і деконструює домінуючі у стосунку до Інших постави і нарації, відбиті в літературі. Останнім часом польська постколоніальна критика почала аналізувати польське говоріння про Креси і деконструювати Кресовий дискурс як домінуючий і колонізаторський стосовно країв і народів, що колись належали до східних територій Польщі. У статті розглядаються прикмети такого дискурсу на прикладі подорожнього есею про Україну і українців сучасного публіциста і письменника Павла Ляуфера Ukraina z pobocza, a czasem nawet z rowu. The article discusses the book entitled Romantyzm i nowoczesność (Kraków 2009), edited by Michał Kuziak in which the authors examine a possibility of an application of modern methodological propositions for an analysis of Romanticism in literature. The reviewer presents and briefly discusses each of the articles contained in the book, focusing particularly on the extent to which individual articles correspond to the main assumptions of the volume. Thus, the reviewer provides the reader with an analysis of the concepts of modernity and Romanticism presented by the authors, but also points out convergence points, interceptions and dependencies occurring between them. The volume, presenting novel interpretations and approaches to individual literary works, methodological reflections and studies on selected problems in aesthetics and Romantic ideology, has been critically acclaimed. The reviewer recommends the book as an interesting piece of writing not only for researchers in the history of the literature of the nineteenth century, but also for those studying culture and for theoreticians of narrative discourse.

This paper aims at a synthetic presentation of four representative research practices in the first stage of postcolonial studies concerned with Polish literature of the Romantic period. This is currently one of the key tools utilised in the studies of Polish Romanticism, which proved to offer a considerable scope for revisions, especially with regard to the myth of the Borderlands and Messianism, thus enabling major Romantic ideologies and myths to be redefined in terms of identity. An analysis of research discourses reveals the shortcomings and benefits of the postcolonial method when employed in the studies of Polish Romanticism. On the one hand, an all too rigid application of the tools has led to certain interpretive simplifications of Romantic texts, while on the other the authors of the discussed works were able to conceptualize the identities of Polish Romantic literature anew.

Artykuł podejmuje kwestię rosnącej autorefleksyjności zauważalnej pod koniec XIX w. w literaturze łotewskiej poprzez porównanie trzech przykładowych utworów, przedstawionych w kontekście historycznym: powieści Līduma dūmos (W dymach karczowiska, 1899) łotewskiego autora Andrievsa Niedry i dwóch nowel – Der Schimmelreiter (Jeździec na siwym koniu, 1888) niemieckiego pisarza Theodora Storma i Nāves ēnā (W cieniu śmierci, 1899) łotewskiego autora Rūdolfsa Blaumanisa. Każdy z wymienionych tekstów został poddany analizie z uwzględnieniem intencji autorów, gatunku oraz cech charakterystycznych narracji, jak również ich pozycji w procesie literackim. Autor położył szczególny nacisk na genezę współczesnej literatury łotewskiej, poruszył również tematykę transferu kulturowego. Analiza porównawcza poprzedza teoretyczną dyskusję o fin-de-siècle’u w odniesieniu do trendów w literaturze oraz specyfiki ich występowania w różnych kontekstach. Artykuł omawia kwestie dotyczące literackiego przedstawiania poszczególnych terytoriów fizycznych, jak również wykorzystania pamięci indywidualnej i zbiorowej w celu wykazania wpływu różnic kolonialnych na omawiane teksty. Analizując powieść Andrievsa Niedry zauważyć można jego dążenie do stworzenia powieści w nowoczesnym, europejskim stylu. Autor śledzi związki między arystokratyczną klasą niemiecką i jej odpowiednikiem – powstającą łotewską klasą średnią. Autor otwarcie manifestuje swoje ideologiczne przekonania dotyczące tzw. nowego nacjonalizmu, który jest podstawą konfliktów przedstawionych w powieści. Psychologiczne cechy protagonistów są podporządkowane temu głównemu celowi. Niedra umieszcza swoje postacie na tle wiejskich i miejskich krajobrazów Łotwy końca XIX w.; stosuje utarte konwencje dziewiętnastowiecznej powieści europejskiej, zwłaszcza tradycji Bildungsroman, która służy ukazaniu potencjalnej siły rodzącej się klasy łotewskich przemysłowców i literatów. Istnieje wiele podobieństw między nowelą Storma i utworem Niedry. Autor opisuje lokalne życie w okolicy swojego rodzinnego miasta Husum w niemieckim regionie Szlezwik- Holsztyn. Bohater jego noweli, Hauke Haien, charakteryzujący się silnym charakterem oraz idealistycznymi aspiracjami, wymyślił nowatorską groblę, mogącą poprawić jakość życia lokalnej społeczności. W opisywaniu głównych bohaterów można zauważyć wiele podobieństw do powieści Andrievsa Niedry. Jednakże w noweli Storma widoczne jest bardziej sceptyczne podejście do możliwości poszczególnych jednostek w osiąganiu celów tylko dzięki silnej woli. Przedstawiająca historyczne tło ciągłej walki człowieka z Morzem Północnym nowela jest zarówno powodem do dumy dla jej autora i jego zwolenników, jak i historycznie ważną manifestacją rosnącej pewności siebie odradzającego się narodu. Porównując nowelę Rudolfa Blaumanisa W cieniu śmierci z dwoma pierwszymi tekstami, jasno widać wątpliwości i poczucie niepewności, jakie towarzyszyły autorowi w pojmowaniu odrębności narodu łotewskiego. Mistrzowskie przedstawienie grupy rybaków, którzy znaleźli się na tafli lodu na otwartym morzu, może być uznane za metaforyczny portret kruchej egzystencji grup podrzędnych w społeczeństwie podzielonym kolonialnie. Blaumanis wykorzystuje poetyckie cechy noweli, by w nowatorski sposób przedstawić analizę wewnętrznego przeżywania fin-de-siècle’u przez mieszkańców Łotwy.

W omawianej książce autorka podejmuje tematykę trudnej kwestii językowej w Ukrainie i jej relacji z polityką i społeczeństwem tego kraju. Wychodzi z podejścia teoretycznego dotyczącego zagadnień tożsamości i narodu w ujęciu współczesnych nauk społecznych i humanistycznych, bazujących na pojęciu dyskursu i dyskursywnego budowania narracji. Dalej autorka porusza obszary przenikania się dyskursu tożsamościowego dotyczącego kwestii językowej z polityką i sferą publiczną w Ukrainie. Porusza także kwestie zmian językowych w obszarze społecznym przytaczając badania i statystyki. Praca jest ciekawą i wartościową pozycją na rynku wydawniczym, szczególnie dla osób zainteresowanych omawianymi zagadnieniami.
This article is a review of the book 'Identity discourse of Ukraine after the Revolution of Dignity through the prism of the language issue' by Nadia Gergalo-Dabek. In the book under review, the author tackles the difficult language issue in Ukraine and its relation to the politics and society of the country. She starts from a theoretical approach concerning the issues of identity and nation in terms of contemporary social sciences and humanities, based on the notion of discourse and discursive narrative construction. Further on, the author addresses the areas of interpenetration of identity discourse concerning the language issue with politics and the public sphere in Ukraine. She also touches upon the issues of language change in the social sphere citing research and statistics. The work is an interesting and valuable item on the publishing market, especially for those interested in the issues discussed.

Przedmiotem analizy w niniejszym artykule będą dwa powiązane z sobą teksty: wydana w 1977 roku powieść Toni Morrison Song of Solomon i poświęcony jej artykuł Ewy Łuczak zatytułowany Powrót do domu w „Pieśni Salomonowej”: nostalgia a budowanie tożsamości. Część moich rozważań chciałabym poświęcić przyjrzeniu się tekstowi Łuczak, dla którego punktem wyjścia są obecne w powieści konteksty polityczne i społeczne. Song of Solomon zostaje w nim zanalizowana w kontekście „dyskursu domu” obecnego w twórczości Morrison, oraz poprzez kategorię nostalgii. W moim artykule chciałabym zwrócić uwagę na inne możliwe interpretacje tekstu noblistki, uzupełniając tym samym interpretację, którą proponuje Ewa Łuczak o nowe konteksty. Kategorię nostalgii proponuję zastąpić odczytaniem Song of Solomon w świetle jednego z najważniejszych mitów diaspory afrykańskiej, wokół którego ustrukturyzowana jest cała powieść – mitu Flying Africans, któremu w tekście Łuczak poświęcone zostało zaledwie jedno zdanie. Mimo iż niniejszy artykuł zawiera pewne elementy polemiczne, chciałabym, aby stanowił przede wszystkim interesujący punkt wyjścia do szerszej dyskusji na temat kulturowej hegemonii zachodnich odczytań tekstów z kręgu literatury postkolonialnej.
Subject to analysis in this article will be two related texts: the novel Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison, published in 1977, and Ewa Łuczak’s article devoted thereto, entitled Homecoming in „Song of Solomon”: Nostalgia and the Construction of Identity. I would like to partially focus on examining Łuczak’s text, for whom political and social contexts depicted in the novel are the point of departure. Łuczak analyses the Song of Solomon in view of the ‘discourse of home’ present in Morrison’s work, and through the category of nostalgia. In my article, I would like to draw attention to other possible interpretations of the Nobel Prize winner’s text, thus complementing the interpretation offered by Ewa Łuczak by introducing new contexts. I propose to replace the category of nostalgia by interpreting the Song of Solomon in the light of one of the most important myths of the African diaspora, around which the entire novel is structured – the myth of the Flying Africans. Łuczak notes this myth in just one sentence. Although this article contains some grounds for a polemic, I would like it to be, above all, an interesting starting point for a broader discussion of the cultural hegemony of Western readings of postcolonial literary texts.

The author attempts to analyze the Ukrainian literature of the Romantic period using the tools of postcolonial criticism. Describing the problems with identifying the Ukrainian postcolonial condition, she draws attention to the complicated relations between the Russian Empire and Ukraine, which developed in conditions of coexistence of the empire in one continent, on neighboring territories, in the situation of cognate history and mentality, and held not only on the road of aggressive colonizer, but also by collaborating with him the elite of the colonized nation. Among the strategies of Ukrainian intelligentsia resistance in conditions of colonial stands out dualistic attitude, maturing Ukrainian, conscious Ukrainian, messianic and ambivalence.

Opis:
Ashapurna Devi, a prominent Bengali woman novelist (1909–1995) focused on women’s creativity and enlightenment during the colonial and postcolonial period in Bengal, India. She herself displayed immense will power, tenacity and an indomitable spirit which enabled her to eke out a prominent place for herself in the world of creative writing. Her life spanned both colonial India and independent India and these diverse experiences shaped her mind and persona and helped her to portray the emerging face of the enlightened Bengali middle-class woman. Her writings trace the evolution of the Bengali woman as an enlightened and empowered individual struggling against the shackles of discriminatory norms imposed upon her by society. She traces the extremely conservative upbringing that the female members of her generation were subjected to and goes on to show how different individuals responded to these structures in different ways. Some would comply unquestioningly, some would comply simply because they did not dare to protest, while others would break free and find their own niche in the outside world. These issues are addressed by Ashapurna Devi in many short stories as well, but a critical analysis of her trilogy Pratham Pratisruti (1964), Subarnalata (1967) and Bokulkatha (1974) enables us to experience this struggle against a gradually unfolding backdrop where India moves on from being a British colony to an independent country. The trilogy traces the life of three generations of a family — Satyabati, Subarna and finally Bokul and establishes Ashapurna Devi as a path-breaking champion of women’s emancipation in an era when such endeavours were few and far between.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest praca Bożeny Karwowskiej Druga płeć na wygnaniu. Doświadczenie migracyjne w opowieści powojennych pisarek polskich, która powstała jako rezultat dłuższych studiów nad różnymi odmianami i dziełami kobiecego pisarstwa emigracyjnego i stanowi udaną próbę usystematyzowania problematyki wygnania w twórczości kobiet. Wskazano, że punktem wyjścia dla omówienia przez badaczkę doświadczenia migracyjnego w twórczości powojennych pisarek polskich jest teza o wyraźnych różnicach między wygnańczymi opowieściami kobiet i mężczyzn. Zauważono ponadto, że książka Bożeny Karwowskiej jest naznaczona silnym rysem indywidualnym, została bowiem napisana z perspektywy emigrantki. Wypełnia ważną lukę w badaniach nad literaturą emigracyjną, wskazuje na nowe perspektywy jej odczytań, korzysta z najnowszych osiągnięć badawczych feminizmu i studiów postkolonialnych.
The subject of the article is work by Bożena Karwowska The Second Sex in Exile. Experience the Story of Migration in the Postwar Polish Writers, established as a result of long study of the different variations and works of women’s writing in exile and is a successful attempt to systematize the problems of exile in the work of women. The article indicated that the starting point for discussion by the researcher of the migration experience in the work of postwar Polish writers is the thesis with clear differences between exile stories of men and women. The article noted that the book by Bożena Karwowska is marked by a strong feature of the individual, for it is written from the perspective of an immigrant. The work fills an important gap in the research literature of exile, points to new perspectives of its reading, using the latest research achievements of feminism and postcolonial studies.

This paper deals with the representation of Africa in selected British opinion-forming periodicals. The study is dedicated to a comparison of the images of the continent and its inhabitants prevailing in the 19th century, exemplified by „The Journal of the Royal Geographical Society of London”, with contemporary images represented by the British media, such as the BBC’s „Focus on Africa Magazine”. The emphasis lies on an analysis of the stereotypes occurring in the discussed periodicals and a subsequent defining of the similarities as well as differences in the stereotyping of Africa in both pre-colonial and post-colonial periods. Further, their effect on public opinion is emphasised.

La teoria sull’auto-riconoscimento dell’universo femminile elaborata da Hélène Cixous nel saggio La Risa de la Medusa (1975) unitamente ai meccanismi di alienazione postcoloniale analizzati da Franz Fanon ne I Dannati della terra (1961) hanno, a mio avviso, ispirato Rosario Ferré nell’elaborazione delle strategie letterarie adottate nel racconto La Muñeca menor. L’intento di Ferré è quello di demistificare e rovesciare il sistema patriarcale vigente attraverso una scrittura autobiografica, sovversiva e iraconda. La ribellione che caratterizza le eroine femminili de La Muñeca menor si compie attraverso la catarsi e la consunzione dei loro corpi. La loro autodistruzione liberatoria apre la strada a una vera e propria decolonizzazione dell’anima. La scrittrice portoricana si prefigge di mettere in luce attraverso il racconto le ripercussioni emotive generate dai processi coloniali. Ferré teorizza inoltre una nuova cosmogonia in cui le donne portoricane, doppiamente vittime del sistema coloniale e patriarcale, possano rivestire un ruolo attivo e partecipativo.
The theory of self-recognition of the female universe elaborated by Hélène Cixous in the essay The laugh of the Medusa (1975) together with the mechanisms of postcolonial alienation analyzed by Franz Fanon in The Damned of the Earth (1961) have, in my opinion, inspired Rosario Ferré in the elaboration of the literary strategies adopted in her short story La Muñeca menor. Ferré’s intention is to demystify and overturn the patriarchal system in force through an autobiographical, subversive, and angry writing. The rebellion of the female heroines is accomplished through catharsis and the consumption of their bodies. Their liberating self-destruction opens the way to a real decolonization of the soul. The Puerto Rican author aims to highlight in the short story the emotional repercussions generated by colonial processes. Rosario Ferré also theorizes a new cosmogony in which Puerto Rican women, doubly victims of the colonial and patriarchal system, can play a more active and participatory role.

The article describes the ethnic exclusion of Aboriginal minority in Australia. Using the method of cultural comparative studies the author examines representation of Aborigines in the literary journalism by Polish writer Mariusz Marczewski who travelled to Australia and observed urban Aboriginal diaspora. This representation is juxtaposed with the anthropological monograph of Aboriginal customs by Wojciech Bęben and with historiographical books about Australia. This context helps to point particular features of Marczewski’s picture of Aborigines which shows his postcolonial sensitivity, poetic language and melancholic sadness on account of the death of Aborigines’ culture.

In the text, the author demonstrated that regardless of the prevailing regime, the State, by relying on separate laws for people with disabilities (or any other minority group), has created and continues to create colonies of sorts. In the first part of the article, the author presented the difference between postcolonialism and neo-colonialism in relation to people with disabilities and in Disability Studies. Afterward, he highlighted the illusory nature of research and, above all, educational activities in favor of people with disabilities. He argues that in the case of this group of people, we are dealing with neo-colonial pedagogy rather than a postcolonial one.

The article offers a reflection on the utility of postcolonial studies and transnational feminism for the analysis of women’s post-socialist experiences, with a special emphasis on Croatian academic and social space. After general considerations about the epistemological profile and etico-political agenda of transnational feminism – as illustrated by the results of the feminist seminar in Dubrovnik (2007–2015) – the author presents three theoretically most challenging feminist authors: Madina Tlostanova, Biljana Kašić and Marina Gržinić. Each of them in its own way demonstrates that theoretical voices from the “global South” are the most productive tool to oppose academic “global feminism” and to inspire “women’s struggles for sociopolitical justice, especially in colonial and neocolonial contexts” (Swarr, Nagar 2010: 4). The radical call for the decolonization of gender, human being and knowledge (Tlostanova 2013), the appreciation of woman’s public voices and counter-discourses (Kašić), and the critique of racialization in the production of knowledge (Gržinić 2015) are intertwined and linked to the final thesis about the importance of distinguishing the biopolitical form of women’s memory vs. the necropolitical formation of institutionalized history in post-socialist context.
