The lecture engages the debate concerning the relation between politics and ethics. Ethics is the guardian of good practice and policy the guardian of the quality of life in the community. The author discusses their mutual historical development paying special attention to two dates. First in 1789, when the Bastille was demolished and the Republic founded with a slogan of ethical content (“Liberty, Equality, Fraternity”), but only in order to control it. The second date is 1989, the year in which the Berlin Wall fell, constitutes a turning point and the dominance of ethics over politics promoted by the triad: democracy, accountability, and human rights, which undoubtedly belong to the highest value. The problem with this is that ethical values can be used in an ideological way. In the final section, the Christian position on the proper relationship between ethics and policy and vice versa is discussed.

The article actualizes the issue of political correctness and the need to develop tools for its further study. Political correctness is considered in the context of gender studies and power relations. The concept of attitudes towards political correctness is revealed, and an attempt is also made to reveal the mechanism of the formation of linguistic attitudes in the mass consciousness through the prism of the concepts of Stephen Lukes and Patricia Hill Collins. The historical and theoretical foundations of the formation of intersectionality are also considered. Intersectionality is focused on the study of hierarchical differences between individuals and groups, depending on the complex intersections of their position in society, determined by many parameters. Respectively, the intersectional approach to the analysis of power and language allows us to solve a number of methodological difficulties associated with the combination of macro and micro levels, which makes possible the further empirical analysis of political correctness directly as a social phenomenon, while taking it out of the linguistic sphere. Political correctness is studied as a formal embodiment of intersectionality, taking into account all the features of cross-identity in linguistic practices. The use of the intersectional method makes it possible to reveal political correctness not only as speech prescriptions, but as a multi-component phenomenon that must be considered in close connection with various kinds of discrimination. The role of power, as the main element, in the mechanisms of interiorization of attitudes towards political correctness is revealed. We highlight the role of symbolic power in ensuring voluntary consent, which is the basis for political correctness and ensures its relatively stable nature. The possibility of using discourse analysis as one of the main methods of studying political correctness is substantiated.

Language imperialism and political correctnessIn the times of general globalization, in its part that considers languages, especially the so-called small languages, we can talk not only about an uncontrolled inroad of mainly English words into all walks of life within a society, but also about elements of linguistic imperialism.That imperialism has come about through technology, not by arms and blazing swords, as was mostly the case in history. In addition, the USA – the exporting country of the above mentioned language-imperialistic phenomena around the world, is considered to be the cradle of the much advocated political correctness, which should include basic human rights, one of which is undoubtedly the right to a proper name.It could be argued whether this right is always respected: I will show some examples of proper names of immigrants who had to/wanted to renounce their names in order to be Americanized (‘‘cooked in the American melting pot’’). Thus, the Croatian Krešo became Chris, Eva is spelled Eve on the other side of the pond (pronounced /I:v/), and in the global (American) news Michael Stich, a German, is pronounced /majkl stits/, and so on.I will also provide an example of political correctness which is not far from sheer stupidity.Political correctness itself changes with time, which will be illustrated by the Croatian example Ciganin – Rom (Gipsy – Roma(ny)).

Die Diskussion um Aspekte politisch-moralischer Korrektheit in der Gegenwart wird immer schärfer, umgreifender. Auch die Literatur ist längst davon betroffen, und sind es im gegenwärtigen Stadium der Debatte primär noch Werke der Gegenwartsliteratur, so ist absehbar und teilweise auch schon offenbar, dass die Diskussion dort nicht Halt machen wird. Am Beispiel des Werkes von Heinrich von Kleist wird gezeigt, welche Gefahr auch kanonischen Texten, Autoren durch Fragen nach ihrer Korrektheit droht und wie weit dadurch ästhetische Freiheit insgesamt gefährdet werden kann.
Dyskusja o aspektach poprawności polityczno-moralnej w obecnych czasach staje się coraz ostrzejsza, coraz bardziej rozległa. Od dawna dotyczy ona również literatury i choć na obecnym etapie debaty chodzi przede wszystkim o dzieła literatury współczesnej, to można przewidzieć, a po części już widać, że dyskusja na tym się nie skończy. Na przykładzie twórczości Heinricha von Kleista pokazano, jakie niebezpieczeństwo grozi nawet kanonicznym tekstom i autorom ze względu na pytania o ich poprawność i w jakim stopniu może to zagrażać wolności estetycznej jako całości.
The discussion about aspects of political-moral correctness in the present is becoming ever sharper, more all-encompassing. It has also affected literature for a long time, and while at the present stage of the debate it is primarily works of contemporary literature that are affected, it is foreseeable and in part already evident that the discussion will not stop there. Using the work of Heinrich von Kleist as an example, we will show the way in which even canonical texts and authors are threatened by questions about their correctness and to what extent this can endanger aesthetic freedom as a whole.

The 2015 immigration crisis became a driving force for movements and parties that negate the current political order, including those that do not conceal their xenophobic slogans and ideas. In retrospect, there are more and more signs that the decision to accept the uncontrolled refugee influx was more an expression of wishful thinking than a rational decision, taking into account the actual political situation. Thus, Europe finds itself in a dangerous situation with far-right movements on the one hand, and radical Islam on the other. Each of these formations legitimises its existence and methods of operation by the existence of the other side, trying to polarise society and create a situation that will somehow force citizens to opt for one of the two options. Paradoxically, Chancellor Merkel’s decision to admit immigrants significantly increased the risk of such a scenario, hence the perception of Islamic and right-wing extremism by the German authorities as posing an equal threat to state security. However, it was only the recent terrorist attacks in October and November 2020 in France and Germany that changed the political narrative.

The article seeks to answer the question of how politically correct terms are perceived by the speakers of Polish. The main focus of analysis is the book Politically Correct Bedtime Stories by James Finn Garner and its Polish translation. The book is a parody of the language of political correctness and, even though it follows the rules of such discourse, its main aim is to mock it. The analysis gives an insight into how meaning is created in both the source and target expressions found in the book. This word-formation and etymological investigation is complemented with the results of an on-line survey submitted by Polish speakers in which they were asked to assess the degree of political correctness of each of the 20 terms. The analysis clearly indicates that, although the meaning of the Polish terms is mostly equivalent to its source expression, which is corroborated by participants’ answers, the terms often explicitly state what the author intended to hide. Hence, participants’ perception of the expressions being politically correct was relatively low and did not correspond the equivalence level.
Artykuł jest próbą odpowiedzi na pytanie, w jaki sposób określenia politycznie poprawne odbierane są przez osoby polskojęzyczne. Głównymi przedmiotami analizy są książka „Politycznie poprawne bajki na dobranoc” autorstwa Jamesa Finna Garnera i jej polski przekład. Książka jest parodią języka poprawności politycznej i chociaż przestrzega ona zasad tego dyskursu, jej głównym celem jest naśmiewanie się z niego. Przeprowadzona analiza pozwala zrozumieć, jak tworzone jest znaczenie określeń zarówno w tekście oryginalnym, jak i w tekście przekładu. Brane pod uwagę słowotwórstwo i etymologia uzupełnione zostały wynikami ankiety przeprowadzonej online na osobach polskojęzycznych, w której proszeni byli o określenie stopnia poprawności politycznej dla wybranych określeń. Analiza w jasny sposób wskazuje, że chociaż znaczenie polskich określeń jest zazwyczaj zbliżone do oryginalnego, co potwierdzone zostało przez biorących udział w ankiecie, to jednak określenia te wyraźnie zwracają uwagę na to, czego autor chciał uniknąć. Z tego powodu badani oceniali je dość nisko pod względem poprawności politycznej w przeciwieństwie do stopnia oddania znaczenia zwrotu angielskiego.

The contemporary political national press critically refers to all manifestations of political correctness. It regards it as a form of censorship. Instead, this kind of political press makes use of the language of political incorrectness. It is an expression of opposition and a method of counteracting the normative political principle. The objective of research includes obtaining an answer to the following research question: “What are the features of the political language of incorrectness used in the contemporary youth national press?” To do so, three magazines were analysed: Bastion, My, Nowe Pokolenie!, and Wszechpolak. At the time of the research, each of the titles under consideration was affiliated with the All-Polish Youth Association.

The article concers a discussion about Little Black Stories for Little White Children [Petits contes nègres pour les enfants des blancs] (1928) renewed in 2018 by the publisher Gallimard Jeunesse. Cendrars was an artist who influenced the French art movements of the 1920s and ‘30s. He was also fascinated with Black Africa. His collection of African child folk tales, Little Black Stories for Little White Children, was ground-breaking in its sympathetic and non-racist respect for African folk culture. In spite of Cendrars’ attitude, expressed in personal life and in his works, Little Black Stories was accused of racism and negrophobia when a new edittion ocurred in 2018. This paper proposes an afterthought about these accusations.

This article is concerned with the translation of children’s literature; it focuses on the ways in which Polish translators of Mark Twain’s novel Adventures of Tom Sawyer deal with the descriptions of the Black minority. The first part of the paper provides a historical overview concerning the publication of the novel and its first editions. It also looks at its status on the Polish market. Next, the paper discusses the notion of political correctness and its role in works written for young audiences. It also examines the terms used to refer to Afro-Americans in eight translations of the novel. Three of them, i.e. the translations by Jan Biliński, Marceli Tarnowski and Kazimierz Piotrowski, appeared in the first half of the 20th century; the remaining ones, i.e. the translations by Paweł Łopatka, Paweł Beręsewicz, Marta Kędroń and Barbara Ludwiczak, Aleksandra Kubiak, Jędrzej Polak, were published after 2000. All the versions were examined to identify the situations in which the writer, narrator and the characters refer to the representatives of the Black minority. The analysis aimed at the identification of the changes in the translation of fragments describing Afro-Americans resulting from political correctness.

Compliance with the rules of political correctness in schools located in culturally diverse environments is not only political but also methodical challenge. One form of this task is called safe spaces, which are territorial borderlands in the reality of schools which apply the principles of dialogue on the basis of political correctness. Due to the different understanding of political correctness and the possibility of lobbying by representatives of minorities on the organizers of safe space, we have to deal with the abuse of their status. As a result, the ideas of political correctness and the establishment of intercultural communication are often questioned, challenged or it has been give them a meaning far from the original. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest prezentacja zjawiska politycznej poprawności i jej wpływu na językową komunikację. Wyrastając ze słusznego skądinąd programu sprawiedliwości i otwartości na drugiego człowieka, ma w swym podstawowym zamierzeniu polegać na unikaniu w dyskursie publicznym stosowania obraźliwych słów i zwrotów oraz zastępować je wyrażeniami bardziej neutralnymi. Opiera się na założeniu, że stosowanie obraźliwego, atakującego języka przyczynia się do zwiększenia poziomu uprzedzeń oraz wyrządza krzywdę przedstawicielom dyskryminowanych grup. Co jednak zrobić, jeśli tego typu działania mogą służyć wprowadzaniu językowej autocenzury lub być początkiem manipulacji, tym bardziej, że nieuchronne stają się nawiązania i porównania do orwellowskiej nowomowy, a to znane nam z historii doświadczenia.
The purpose of this article is to present the phenomenon of political correctness and its impact on the linguistic communication. Growing up with the right program of justice and openness to the other person has in their primary intention to rely on avoiding the public discourse the use of offensive words and phrases and replace them with more neutral expressions. It is based on the assumption that the use of offensive, attacking language helps to increase the level of prejudices and harms representatives of discriminated groups. But what if this type of activity can help to implement the linguistic self-censorship or to be the beginning of manipulation, perhaps more sophisticated and at a higher level, but still, all the more reason, that references and comparisons to Orwellian newspeak are becoming inevitable, and these are the experiences we know from history.

The purpose of the article is to draw attention to the issue of efficacy of the anti- racist communication strategies used to publicize and criticize cases of the racist hate speech in the Polish public discourse. I argue that the actions being currently undertaken within this field - defined as the anti-racist discourse - are often ineffective. The empirical basis for considerations presented in the article is provided by a discourse analysis focusing on the media dispute evoked by the parliamentary statement made by deputy Artur Górski (Law and Justice) on October 5, 2008. The context for reflection on the Polish anti-racist discourse and the controversies over the validity of the racist hate speech is of double nature. On one hand, it is shaped by the American debates on political correctness carried out in the eighties and nineties of the 20th century. On the other, the context comprises transformations of the racist and anti-racist discourse in the Western Europe as well as the rhetoric of the European populist right that has been developing since the seventies of the last century. In the article, I point at some of the causes of inefficacy of the anti-racist discourse and also try to outline certain general directives that can offer a departure point for reasonable modification of the anti-racist communication strategies in the future.

This article is meant to be a contribution to the study of the multifaceted nature of taboo and euphemism that represent those linguistic mechanisms that are created by the working of both overt and covert social and psychological factors. And so, the process of sense derogation goes hand in hand with euphemisation, the process of using a new word to refer to an item or concept that for various reasons language users hesitate to talk about straightforwardly. Once a euphemism is accepted, the original term that has been subject to replacement tends to become even less acceptable, undergoing the process of accelerated pejoration. Above the individual level, the use of a particular lexical item may be interdicted by the rules imposed by a given society or a certain sphere within a given society. The mechanisms of taboo and euphemism affect lexical items relatable to various levels of the Great Chain of Being, starting with the supra-human layer where there is the sphere of gods that has been universally subject to taboo, but also animal world where hunting taboos must ultimately be treated as a verbal tactic to obscure the hunter’s intentions; the usage rules are motivated by the fear that the hunted animals may understand the hunters’ speech and intentions.

Opis:
This article explores the substitution of words considered as offensive that designate marginalized and stigmatized social groups over time. The substitutions, framed in the politically correct discourse, are renamings that go against certain traditional naming ways perceived by a broad social sector as obsolete, according to an ideology which tries to remove from the vocabulary everything implying discrimination, to promote an orthodoxy of moderation and reduce the linguistic inequality in the way of referring to the strong and the weak. Thus the speaker stands between the need for freedom of expression and that of adopting ethical conduct.
Cet article explore le remplacement de mots considérés comme offensifs désignant des groupes sociaux marginalisés et stigmatisés au fil du temps. Les substitutions s’encadrent dans le discours politiquement correct et constituent des redénominations qui vont contre des façons de nommer traditionnelles, perçues à présent comme obsolètes par un grand secteur de la population, selon une idéologie qui essaie d’effacer du vocabulaire tout ce qui implique une discrimination, afin de promouvoir une orthodoxie de la mesure et de réduire l’inégalité linguistique dans la manière de désigner le fort et le faible. Le locuteur se place ainsi entre la nécessité de la liberté d’expression et de l’adoption d’une conduite éthique.
