The present paper is the second of two papers investigating polyglot dictionaries which comprised Polish and English wordlists. It rests on the assumption that, by providing the earliest documentation material for Polish and English respectively, the polyglots can be regarded as historical antecedents of bilingual dictionaries. While the first paper focused on three Renaissance works of reference, including Calepino’s eleven-language edition, this one concentrates on two relatively little known endeavours of the Enlightenment: Christoph Warmer’s Gazophylacium decem linguarum Europaearum … (1691) and Peter Simon Pallas’ Linguarum totius orbis vocabularia comparativa … (1787–1789). The bilingual material they embrace has been analysed and illustrated with examples in order to shed new light on the two polyglots, which are additionally traced back to their sources.

This paper aims to provide a survey of the early polyglot dictionaries which paired Polish with English, based on the premise that the polyglots can be considered as predecessors of bilingual dictionaries proper. Following this rationale, the authoress examines chronologically the first three of the multilingual endeavours: Ambrogio Calepino’s Dictionarium undecim linguarum … (1590), Hieronymus Megiser’s Thesaurus polyglottus: vel, dictionarium multilingue … (1603), and Georg Henisch’s Teütsche Sprach und Weissheit. Thesaurus linguae and sapientiae Germanicae … (1616). The focus is primarily on the linguistic material of the polyglots, but the assumed aims and readership are also tackled briefly. As bilingual wordbooks have traditionally catered to the needs of users of one or both of the respective languages, the polyglot dictionaries are additionally looked at from the perspective of Polish-English language contact in the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries.

The focus of the paper is the historical comparison of E fist and P pięść from the perspective of diachronic phonology. The paper specifically addresses the issue of the phonological development of this pair of cognates. The main aim is to explain the relatedness and differentiations of the modern reflexes of the original Proto-Indo-European roots and to account for their different phonological developments in both languages with a view to understanding the connection between the contemporary cognates. These aims are realised by means of searching for sound changes that explain the discrepancy in the phonological shapes of modern cognates and collecting other pairs of cognates that demonstrate the effect of theses sound changes. As the result of the historical and comparative analysis, it is argued that some of the Proto-Germanic reconstructions are more likely than others and in conclusion the most probable development of the two cognates is outlined in the chronological order. It is remarkable that the cognates of the compounds pięść / fist are to be found almost exclusively in Slavic and Germanic and the effect of their development resembles blending.

The paper concentrates on the historical comparison of English herd and Polish trzoda from the perspective of the hypothesis of common origin. As Polish and English are descendants of a common ancestor, the Proto-Indo-European language, it is expected that the two words, different from one another as they may seem today, go back to one and the same common proto-word. According to etymological sources, Polish dziecko ‘a child’ and English felicity ‘joy, happiness’ are cognates, as they derive from the same Proto-Indo-European root *dhe(i) ‘to suck’. Despite the fact that these two have chosen two different paths in their semantic evolution in different cultures (dziecko in Slavic one, and felicity first in Romance culture, later in Germanic one), it seems that they were both mentally associated with babyhood and maternity at a certain moment in the past. The objectives of the paper are the following. First, I want to present the Slavic etymology of the lexeme dziecko, as well the Romance and Germanic etymology of felicity. Second, I aim to chase and discuss their semantic evolution from Proto-Indo European root *dhe(i) ‘to suck’ to their contemporary meanings. Third, I choose to find and explain the extralinguistic (cultural) factors which motivated the above mentioned semantic changes. In order to explicate the motivation behind culturally conditioned semantic alteration, a reference is made to the theory of linguistic worldview, as understood by Jerzy Bartmiński (2002, 2006), as well as to panchrony, as viewed by Przemysław Łozowski (2010, 2018).

The paper examines the interdependence of literature and world politics, focusing on contemporary Polish prose, mainly in English translation, promoted in the West between 1945 and 1989 for its anti-communist message, not rarely with the financial backing from the CIA, denied to apolitical Polish writing. Among others, it addresses the question of the instrumental treatment of writers on both sides of the Iron Curtain and the ideological censorship of the original as well as of the translated literary texts. Taken into account are works of fiction by Czesław Miłosz, Marek Hłasko, Witold Gombrowicz, Jerzy Andrzejewski and Ryszard Kapuściński.

The aim of this paper is to conduct a diachronic analysis of the Polish word rżysko ‘stubble’, whose root retains the primary designation of rye, namely reż ‘rye, obs.’. Although this noun was ousted by żyto ‘rye’, a derivative of the verb żyć ‘to live’, its cognates are still used in many Slavic and Germanic languages, e.g. Russian rožь (рожь) ‘rye’, and English rye. The paper presents other cognates with a view to contrasting the English word rye with its obsolete Polish cognate reż and understanding the evolution of both words. For this purpose, the study seeks to identify the sound changes responsible for the discrepancy between the Polish-English cognates which developed from *rugh i-. The derivative rżysko ‘stubble’ has been analysed in the context of other nomina loci as well as the semantic change which affected the word. It is suggested that the phenomenon exemplified by rżysko can be referred to as a root archaism.

This paper focuses on the ways of maintaining cohesive links in the translation process in the Polish-English language pair. Of primary interest is how the thematic/rhematic structure of Polish sentences can be successfully rendered in English to produce cohesive, natural-sounding and communicative target texts with a proper information flow. These aspects have implications for translation teaching. It has been observed that, in view of the differences between Polish and English word order, university students at the start of their translator training experience two general problems as they attempt to translate longer stretches of text into English: (1) they produce cohesive passages, which contain errors in word order (due to syntactic interference from Polish) or (2) they produce grammatically correct sentences, which, however, form incohesive passages (i.e. ones in which the thematic/rhematic progression is not retained) with an inappropriate information structure. For this reason, students need to become acquainted with some practical solutions that help build cohesion in Polish-English translation. These include (1) shifts from active to passive, (2) other shifts in syntactic functions, (3) fronting, and (4) inventing sentence subjects out of broader context.

Opis:
The impact of the Polish language on the English lexical fabric, although unimpressive, is worth noticing. However, thus far it has not been a source of interest of many scholars. The present paper aims at discussing Polish loanwords that have found their way into the English language; this is done by means of collecting alleged loanwords from an array of sources (dictionaries, subject literature, and the Internet) which are later verified against, inter alia, such etymological dictionaries as the Oxford English Dictionary. Next, in order to assess their scale of use, selected items are checked in a number of corpora available online. The research concludes that there are 33 direct borrowings from the Polish language (belonging to 8 semantic categories) present in English, and nearly half of them are yet unattested in the OED.

The first part of the paper deals with characteristics of classroom interaction as a type of institutional talk in a conversational analytic perspective. Next, the thesis is discussed concerning developing learners' interactional competence to foster learner discursive independence in argumentative discussions in English as a foreign language. Finally, after a short review of dialogic signals, the article presents a preliminary analysis of selected dialogic signals: evaluating reformulations and piggybacking as the ways of achieving reciprocity in argumentative discussions.

The aim of this paper is to provide an exemplification of selected, consonantal features of Polish-accented English on the basis of a biographical interview conducted with a prominent Polish politician, Donald Tusk. Typical examples of Polish-accented English, such as final obstruent devoicing, plosive insertion after /ŋ/, lack of linking /r/ or various sound substitutions, are presented in the paper. The paper finishes with concluding remarks which briefly recapitulate its main points and suggest further analyses within the field of Polish-accented English.
Celem niniejszego artykułu jest egzemplifikacja wybranych, spółgłoskowych cech polskiej angielszczyzny zebranych na podstawie wywiadu przeprowadzonego z czołowym polskim politykiem – Donaldem Tuskiem. W artykule przedstawiono takie cechy polskiej angielszczyzny jak np. ubezdźwięcznianie końcowych spółgłosek, wymawianie spółgłosek zwartych miękkopodniebiennych po /ŋ/, brak /r/ łączącego czy zastąpienia angielskich dźwięków dźwiękami polskimi. Artykuł zamykają uwagi końcowe podsumowujące jego treść oraz podające propozycje dalszych badań w obrębie polskiej angielszczyzny.

W opracowaniu zaprezentowano materiały do nauki języka angielskiego jako rzadko wyzyskiwane źródła do badań przeszłości polsko-angielskich kontaktów językowo-kulturowych. Ogląd tekstów edukacyjnych pozwolił: prześledzić czynniki decydujące o wysokim prestiżu języka angielskiego na ziemiach polskich, zaobserwować sposoby wykorzystania elementów kultury anglosaskiej w celach wychowawczych, wskazać rodzaje zjawisk interferencyjnych możliwych do analizowania w tekstach pisanych przez osoby bilingwalne. Obserwacje przeprowadzono zgodnie z założeniami lingwistyki antropologicznej, akcentującej związki między człowiekiem, językiem i kulturą w badaniach nad sposobem używania języka przez naszych przodków.
The study presents materials for learning English as rarely exploited sources for research into the past of Polish-English linguistic and cultural contacts. The viewing of educational texts allowed to: examine the factors determining the high prestige of English among Poles, observe ways of using elements of Anglo-Saxon culture for educational purposes, indicate the types of interference phenomena possible to analyze in texts written by bilingual people. The observations were carried out in accordance with the assumptions of anthropological linguistics, stressing the relationship between man, language and culture in the study of our ancestors’ language use.

The paper examines and compares the realization of the rhotic consonant /r/ in fake and genuine Polish-accented English. The former variety is represented by the speech of several actors of different nationalities featuring in the 2017 American film The Zookeeper’s Wife, the latter is analysed on the basis of speech samples provided by 25 teenage Polish learners of English. We focus on the rhoticity vs nonrhoticity of the examined accents and the phonetic realizations of /r/ in order to draw conclusions concerning the authenticity of Polish English pronunciation in American films.

The article illustrates problems which were encountered by students of the first and second year of English Philology, who had been given a task of translating from Polish into English a passage from a Supreme Court act, concerning the European Arrest Warrant execution. The author who is an active lawyer – working as a prosecutor of the District Prosecutor’s Office – analyzes almost twenty legal phrases coming from the original text and, comparing them with the official version of translation, examines the students’ versions (108 translations altogether) which are then accompanied by descriptions and comments on the mistakes made. The analyzed examples show the uniqueness of the legal language and its pitfalls as well as lexical and syntactic dilemmas which create linguistic traps for a Polish translator who is preoccupied with translation of legal texts from Polish into English or vice versa. Moreover, the discussed cases indicate the need for a highly professional training of philology students, especially in the area of ESP (English for Special Purposes).
Artykuł ukazuje problemy jakie napotkali studenci I i II roku anglistyki, którym postawiono za zadanie przetłumaczyć z języka polskiego na angielski, fragment uchwały Sądu Najwyższego dotyczącej wykonania Europejskiego Nakazu Aresztowania. Autor – czynny zawodowo prawnik – prokurator Prokuratury Rejonowej – analizuje ok. 20 zwrotów prawniczych pochodzących z tej uchwały i, odnosząc się do oficjalnego tłumaczenia tekstu, dokonuje analizy tłumaczeń zaproponowanych przez studentów (w sumie 108 wersji) przedstawiając i opisując zaistniałe błędy. Przeanalizowane przykłady ukazują specyfikę języka prawnego i prawniczego oraz zawiłości i pułapki leksykalno-syntaktyczne, jakie czyhają na polskiego tłumacza zajmującego się przekładem prawniczych tekstów z języka polskiego na język angielski lub odwrotnie. Omówione przykłady wskazują na potrzebę wysoce profesjonalnego szkolenia studentów neofilologii w zakresie przekładu tekstów specjalistycznych.
