The aim of this article was to make an attempt to outline the perception of the acculturation process of Ukrainian children in Polish schools in their parents. Applying Berry's theory of acculturation, it was demonstrated that the systemic solutions concerning the education of children of a national minority in public institutions are rooted in the classical model of assimilation. The attitudes of the children’s parents who came to Poland for work or to escape war also indicate a desire to assimilate their children in the school environment as soon as possible, and at the same time to separate them in the home environment or in the group of compatriots.

1519 was a special year for the city of Poznań, owing to the foundation of a new school, the Lubrański Academy. It was the first school of humanities in Poland to follow the best models of Renaissance education and employed illustrious teachers like Krzysztof Hegendorfer and Benedykt Herbest. In the 16th century, the Academy was considered a rival of Krakow University; ultimately in the early 17th century, the Academy was affiliated with the University. As a result of the affiliation, the Poznań school enjoyed stability, a group of experienced teachers and a curriculum recognized by the society. The curriculum stood out in Poland by its inclusion of practical preparation for performing various political functions, especially in the field of law, and, as in other educational institutions, by preparing young people for cultural life in the country. Its relations with Krakow University also had drawbacks: during the Enlightenment reforms of the education system, the Lubrański Academy adopted a conservative and reactionary position. Despite this, the authorities managed to introduce several modern solutions, especially in the realm of teaching modern foreign languages.

Opis:
The Polish Diaspora in Moldova is not frequently a subject of interest to Polish researchers. It remains to some extent in the background of Polish communities in neighboring countries – Ukraine and Romania, resulting in fewer dedicated publications. This article tries to fill this gap, and mainly focuses the current status of Polish language teaching and Polish culture in Moldova and Transdniestria. The article describes the author’s own empirical research conducted in August 2008 – interviews with Polish women residing in Transdniestria, and in September and October of 2008 – a questionnaire survey (conducted via e-mail) with teachers and students of Polish language courses in the area of „indigenous” Moldova. Information obtained through interviews and correspondence has been supplemented by the author’s own observations during three visits to Moldova and Transdniestria (in 2005-2008).

Opis:
One of the main problems that were to be faced during the post-war era was educating new commanding personnel for the purposes of the Polish people’s army. The educational programmes and aims, which were being carried out at Polish military schools were imposed by the socialist system as well as a dynamic political situation in Poland. The very first post-war years were stigmatized by strong Soviet influence, which impacted both the organization of military educational system as well as the process of bringing up the army which was taking part in the mentioned institutions. Just as the reality was changing, so was the point of view at the education of a Polish officer. In the given paper educational activity present at military schools was showed, based on four main Polish military schools: The Naval Academy (Akademia Marynarki Wojennej), The National Defence Academy (Akademia Obrony Narodowej), Military Technical Academy (Wojskowa Akademia Techiczna) and Military Political Academy (Wojskowa Akademia Polityczna), from the end of World War II to the 1990’s.

The aim of the article is to present the problem of raising a child in emigration, in Polish culture and national tradition, on the example of Polish Saturday schools in London. To implement the research problem, a monographic method was used, as well as a critique of documents and previous literature in this field. The result of the research is to present the role and merits of Polish schools of native subjects in the upbringing of children in emigration, based on the example of institutions operating in London. The article presents various forms of cooperation between Saturday schools and parents in the process of national education of their children. The patriotic upbringing of several generations of young Poles who are aware of their roots and are proud of their origins, is a great merit of the Polish schools of native subjects in London.

Opis:
Poles settled in present-day Romania in the fourteenth century. A subsequent influx of Polish settlers followed the fall of the Kościuszko Uprising. The aim of this study is to present the history of education in the Polish minority in Romania. The work focuses on showing various forms of educational and upbringing institutions from the early 19th century to 1939. In the analyzed period, the Poles organized mainly kindergartens and comprehensive primary and secondary schools in Bukowina (now northern Romania). They also made attempts at introducing the Polish language to teachers’ training institutions i.e. teachers’ training colleges for men and women. They established their own socio-educational societies and built Polish Houses in which they pursued a wide range of educational and cultural activities. In the Kingdom of Romania, Polish children could also attend (under certain conditions) Polish language classes in Romanian state schools. Owing to the Polish Schools in Romania, followed by the Polish School Association in Romania, Polish private education assumed various forms.

According to unofficial data from the Polish Consulate in The Hague, there are currently around 30 Polish and Polonia’s schools in the Netherlands. The way they operate, both in legal and educational terms, are different. This article is an attempt to categorize them. In addition, this article characterizes the existing schools by dividing them into four categories – school consultation points linked with Polish diplomatic missions, schools associated in the Polish Schools’ Forum in the Netherlands, schools operating at parishes and non-affiliated ones. According to the Dutch Planning Office, there are currently 250,000 Poles in the Netherlands. The representatives of the Polish Consulate in The Hague estimate that there may be up to 40,000 children among people of Polish descent who live in the Netherlands. Only about 2,000 of them attend Polish and Polonia’s schools. This article is the beginning to understand why only 5% of children of Polish origin who live in the Netherlands attend schools that look after Polish language.

The COVID-19 pandemic was a trigger for the educational reform into on-line teaching for preschools, schools, and universities. All educational institutions were faced with this new and unprecedented situation. The change has been defined by technology and thus the education as we know it – face to face and inside a classroom – was transformed into an on-line and distance learning. Access to technology, internet platforms or on-line materials as well as teachers’, parents’ and students’ technological competence made the change challenging. Polish Saturday Schools are unique and autonomous institutions where learning, even under optimal circumstances, is demanding. Hence, an insight into the teachers’ perspective on the on-line delivery seemed valuable and important to research.

The first Polish Saturday Schools (PSS) in the UK were established in the 1950s. Their didactic and educational aims included the continuation of mother-tongue education for Polish children in exile and the promotion of culture and national heritage among children already born in the UK. Currently, Polish Saturday Schools fulfil the role of ambassadors of Polishness and play an important socio-cultural and identity role. PSS are perceived as a common good and an integral part of the local community of the country of residence, which creates space for a dialogical relationship between pupils, their parents, and teachers, also in the context of global crises. Drawing on a pilot study involving netnography, an attempt will be made to answer the question of what activities are undertaken by PSS members in the UK to support the war refugees from Ukraine and whether these initiatives serve a pro-community education function.

The article presents the use of a simple genre of advice in a teaching project from the nineteenth century. The publication which is the subject of the analysis is by Julius Jedliński, and refers to the Polish national school called L’École polonaise des Batignolles in  Paris. This document certifies that emigres discussed the value of the Polish language as a determinant of Polish identity. Effective ways of teaching the children of immigrants Polish language and culture were sought. The author of the publication presented the concept of changes in the school curriculum. As a means of persuasion he primarily used advice. The reception of the proposal by Jedliński was not favourable. The analysis of responses reveals transformations in the basic block of communicative intentions of the advice, which is interpreted as an order, complaint, or even a threat. On this basis, the attention is drawn to the importance of the communicative context in the interpretation of advice. As a result of the public nature of an act of speech and the extension of the audience while maintaining the desired recipient, the decisiveness of any advice is increased and a modification of a simple genre takes place.

Participation in the process of teaching Polish as a foreign language requires teachers to constantly enrich their methodological knowledge in order to connect two culturally diverse circles and include them in one didactic process. Students from the Polish diaspora generation are characterized by heterogeneity in terms of competence in the inherited language and the use of language codes limited only to certain spheres of life. Multimodality in glottodidactics combine linguistic and cultural content, thanks to which they can activate both the linguistic and cultural competences of the student. The article presents the understanding of cultural clash as a cultural distance seen through the prism of various levels. Multimodality is presented as a bridging tool, a way to mitigate the effect of this collision.

Quary had been conducted in the National Archive of Belarusia. 4 p division of the Central Comitee of Belarusian Socialist Soviet Republic was taken under consideration. The major attention was focused on the files containing data about schools, Polish education and everyday life of Polish society in Soviet Belarusia. The recovered documentation was obtained as xerocopies (356) and in electronic form (51).
Kwerenda prowadzona była w Narodowym Archiwum Republiki Białoruś. Pod uwagę wzięto Zespół 4p Komitetu Centralnego Białoruskiej Socjalistycznej Republiki Radzieckiej (КЦ БССР). Uwagę skoncentrowano na teczkach zawierających dane o szkołach, oświacie polskiej i życiu społeczeństwa polskiego na Białorusi Sowieckiej. Odnalezione dokumenty zostały pozyskane w wersji ksero (356) i wersji elektronicznej (51).

The article is an analysis of the historically occurring names of Polish schools operating in the United States of America in the last half century. A structure of names, their variants and territorial concentration were examined. The basis of the research was a list of over 150 educational institutions. Over a dozen basic and secondary naming variants have been established and presented. It was found out that regardless of the ongoing changes, modifications and the constant appearance of new terms, the traditionally functioning ones have a strong position resulting from the existing environmental conditions. As part of the considerations, the circumstances of their formation were indicated and the reasons for territorial differentiation were discussed. Obtained results lead to conclusion that the names of Polish schools in the United States will undergo a process of slow modernization, but the basic scheme of building names of institutions that has existed for many decades will not change. Its strength is resulting from the attachment of representatives of particular American Polish diaspora groups to the names existing in a given area and the actual lack of society’s consent to introduce new variants of names.
Artykuł stanowi analizę historycznie występujących nazw szkół polskich działających na terenie Stanów Zjednoczonych Ameryki w ostatnim półwieczu. Badaniom poddano strukturę nazw, ich warianty oraz koncentrację terytorialną. Podstawą dociekań była lista ponad 150 placówek oświatowych. Ustalono i zaprezentowano kilkanaście podstawowych i pobocznych wariantów nazewnictwa. Stwierdzono, że niezależnie od postępujących zmian, modyfikacji i pojawiania się stale nowych określeń, te tradycyjnie funkcjonujące mają silną pozycję wynikającą z istniejących uwarunkowań środowiskowych. W ramach przeprowadzonych rozważań wskazano na okoliczności ich powstania i omówiono przyczyny zróżnicowania terytorialnego. Uzyskane wyniki pozwoliły na wypracowanie wniosków, zgodnie z którymi nazwy szkół polskich w Stanach Zjednoczonych będą ulegały procesowi powolnej modernizacji, ale podstawowy, istniejący od wielu dekad schemat budowania nazw placówek nie ulegnie zmianie. Jego siła wynika z przywiązania przedstawicieli amerykańskich grup polonijnych do nazewnictwa istniejącego na określonym terenie oraz rzeczywistego braku przyzwolenia społecznego na wprowadzenie nowych wariantów.
