Opis:
The aim of this article is to interpret a novel The Fugue by Wit Szostak regarding his inspiration by a musical form (a fugue). In the first part of the text, a relationship between music and literature, and the possibility to imitate music in literature are analyzed. Then, the author pays attention to Szostak’s attitude to music and the influence of music on his prose works. In the next part of this text, the main problems of The Fugue are characterized, including the title, plot as well as a construction of this work. The final fragment consists of conclusions about the functions of Szostak’s inspiration by the fugue.
Celem niniejszego artykułu jest interpretacja powieści Fuga Wita Szostaka w świetle inspiracji muzycznym modelem konstrukcyjnym – formą fugi. W pierwszej części tekstu analizie zostaje poddany potencjalny zakres i możliwość nawiązania do sztuki dźwięków w obrębie literatury. Następnie autorka przybliża poglądy pisarza dotyczące muzyki oraz wskazuje na aluzje do tej dziedziny w jego twórczości prozatorskiej. Kolejna część poświęcona jest interpretacji powieści Fuga – analogii do typowej dla sztuki dźwięków formalnej organizacji, której poszukuje się zarówno w paratekstualnym, tekstualnym, jak i konstrukcyjnym wymiarze dzieła. Artykuł wieńczą konkluzje na temat funkcji inspiracji określonym wzorcem architektonicznym w utworze Szostaka.

This article focuses on the relationship between Yanka Bryl and Poland, showing the influence of Polish classics on his literary legacy. Stories such as Orphan’s Bread by Yanka Bryl, Orphan’s Plight by Bolesław Prus and the novel Sisyphean Labours by Stefan Żeromski were subjected to comparative analysis. Prus concentrated on the fate of the orphan and his unequal struggle for a better tomorrow. Żeromski showed the image of the school in the Russian Congress Kingdom of Poland and the struggle of young people against Russification. J. Bryl, in his story, raised the topics of the orphanage and the struggle for linguistic, cultural and national identity.

Nawiązując do koncepcji technik Siebie Michela Foucaulta i antropotechniki Petera Sloterdijka, w artykule przedstawiono propozycję modelu interpretacji literackich zjawisk konwersyjnych. Perspektywa „antropotechniczna” nie wyklucza umieszczania doświadczenia konwersji podmiotu w kontekstach metafizycznych, lecz w wielu przypadkach pozwala przekroczyć religijny horyzont lektury, umożliwiając uwzględnienie szerszego niż w przypadku postsekularyzmu spektrum zjawisk literackich. Wykorzystując wspomniany model, procesy konwersji ukazano na przykładzie kilku współczesnych (wydanych po 2009 roku) polskich utworów prozatorskich, w szczególności dokonując poszerzonej interpretacji powieści Pióropusz Mariana Pilota. U podstaw wewnętrznej przemiany bohaterów tych narracji stoi doświadczenie ograniczoności i utraty.
Referring to the concept of Michel Foucault’s technologies of self and Peter Sloterdijk’s anthropotechnics, the article presents a proposal for an interpretative model of literary conversion phenomena. The “anthropotechnical” perspective does not exclude placing the experience of the subject’s conversion in metaphysical contexts, but in many cases it allows to transcend the religious horizon of reading. Adopting such a perspective allows us to perceive conversion processes in a wider literary spectrum than in the case of postsecular interpretations. Using the aforementioned model, the conversion processes were presented on the example of several contemporary (published after 2009) Polish prose works, particularly in an extended interpretation of the novel Pióropusz (War Bonnet) by Marian Pilot. In these narratives, the conversion of the characters is based on experiences of limitedness and loss.

The study retraces and investigates Włodzimierz Odojewski’s (1930–2016) process of writing two short stories between 1976 and 1993 by interrogating the manuscripts (handwritten and typed) from the writer’s personal archive, maintained by the Faculty of Polish and Classical Philology of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. To document the genesis of the stories, the author draws on analytical methods proposed by French text geneticists (Pierre-Marc De Biasi, Jean Bellemin-Noël) and American scholar John Bryant (author of the fluid text concept). The investigation is focused on selected clusters of revisions made in Odojewski’s manuscripts – edits made to the title and the opening paragraphs, alongside various deletions, corrections, and additions. The investigation is premised on the argument that in the course of a long creative act, writers typically strive for compositions that most precisely reflect the nuances of their characters’ mental states and the settings of their stories. As performed by Odojewski, the creative act serves as an example of the inherent volatility of writing, which ultimately produces highly fluid characters.
W studium dokonano rekonstrukcji i analizy procesu pisania dwóch opowiadań Włodzimierza Odojewskiego (1930–2016) powstałych w latach 1976–1993. Autor bada bruliony (rękopisy i maszynopisy) przechowywane w archiwum pisarza na Wydziale Filologii Polskiej i Klasycznej UAM w Poznaniu. Praca nad dokumentacją genezy opowiadań odbywa się przy pomocy narzędzi zaproponowanych przez francuskich genetyków tekstu (P-M. de Biasi, J. Bellemin-Noël) i amerykańskiego badacza J. Bryanta (pojęcie płynnego tekstu /fluid text/). Analiza dotyczy wybranych skupisk zmian w brulionach utworów Odojewskiego – redakcje tytułu, początkowych akapitów, a także skreślenia, poprawki, uzupełnienia. Punktem dojścia studium jest stwierdzenie, że toku długotrwałego aktu twórczego pisarz dąży do konstrukcji, które w sposób maksymalnie precyzyjny oddają niuanse stanów psychicznych bohaterów oraz scenerii akcji opowiadań. Akt twórczy w wykonaniu Odojewskiego jest przykładem niestabilności pisania, którego efektem są kreacje płynnych postaci.

W artykule odtworzono i przeanalizowano przed-teksty trzech opowiadań Włodzimierza Odojewskiego, reprezentujących dojrzałą i późną fazę jego twórczości – Ku Dunzynańskiemu Wzgórzu idzie las, Co słychać w ojczyźnie, Sezon w Wenecji. Pracę oparto na spuściźnie literackiej znajdującej się w archiwum pisarza na Wydziale Filologii Polskiej i Klasycznej UAM w Poznaniu. Jako szczególny obiekt rekonstrukcji i analizy wybrano kolejne redakcje początkowych akapitów wspomnianych opowiadań. W procesie tekstotwórczym każdego z nich autor podejmował kilka- lub kilkunastokrotnie pisanie i redagowanie kolejnych ujęć inicjalnej partii utworów. W każdym z przypadków inna tendencja okazywała się nadrzędną cechą pisarskiego wysiłku – raz było to dążenie do zawieszenia stanu świadomości bohatera utworu, kiedy indziej do odwlekania spotkania narratora z dawnym znajomym, za jeszcze innym razem chodziło o skrócenie dystansu czasowego i osobowego. Genetyka wybranych tekstów Odojewskiego dostarcza istotnych wskazówek i impulsów do podejmowania nowych (lub pogłębiania i korygowania już istniejących) interpretacji badanych opowiadań.
The paper reconstructs and analyzes the avant-texts of three short stories by Włodzimierz Odojewski, representing the mature, late phase of his work: Ku Dunzynańskiemu Wzgórzu idzie las, Co słychać w ojczyźnie, Sezon w Wenecji. The paper is based on Odojewski’s archive at the AMU Faculty of Polish and Classical Studies in Poznań. Subsequent editions of the opening paragraphs of the three stories mentioned above were selected as a special object of reconstruction and analysis. In the text-forming process of each one Odojewski edited the text several times. In each case a different tendency proved to be a superior characteristic of the writing effort – in one case the aim was to show a suspension of a protagonist’s consciousness, in one – to postpone a meeting between the narrator and his old friend, and in one – reducing the temporal and personal distance. The genetics of selected texts by Odojewski provides significant clues and impulses for making new (or deepening and correcting the already existing) interpretations of the studied short stories.

Autorka sa zameriava na reprezentativne preklady, strategie vyberu textov na preklad a strategie prekladania naturizmu v meniacej sa kulturnej perspektive druhej polovice 20. storocia. Historicka a kulturna situacia, historicka vzdialenost’ medzi ori- ginalmi a ich prekladmi ma najvaćśi vplyv na vyber textov, ale aj na strategie, ktore si prekladatelia vyberaju pocas procesu prekladu. Z hladiska kultury a literatury sa v Polsku v roku 1956 objavila slovenska próza naturizmu vo velmi sirokom zastupeni, ale neo- vplyvnila prijemcov a nemala moznost ovplyvnit’ vyvoj prijimajucej literatury. Autorka clanku sa snazi odpovedat na otazku, ake boli toho priciny.
The author of the article analyses Polish translations of the Slovak naturalist prose which is a very interesting phenomenon at the primary horizon and appears to be the most frequently translated into Polish. The author concentrates on the represen- tative translations, strategies of selection and strategies of translation of the naturalism in the changing cultural perspective of the second half of the twentieth century. Historical and cultural situation, historical distance between the originals and their translations has the biggest influence for the selection of the texts but also for the strategies which translators choose during the process of translation. In the perspective of cultural and literature turn in Poland in 1956, Slovak naturalist prose had the chance to appear in the second horizon but it did not affect recipients and did not have the possibility to impact the development of the receiving literaturę. The author of the article tries to explain the reasons for that.

In the last fifty years, many studies in Europe and America have addressed the problem of poetic prose and of prose poetry, in an attempt to enclose two very elusive literary categories, if possible, in an ultimate definition. Retracing the evolutionary lines of the debate on the issue, the article focuses on the analysis of two recent collections of Ewa Lipska’s poetry, classified by critics as “poetic prose”. While such a definition is useful for the collection Miłość, Droga Pani Schubert… (2013), it is less accurate for the volume Droga Pani Schubert… (2012). In the latter, the presence of frequent enjambments and the repeated ruptures with keywords in strong positions form an original rhythmic-semantic regularity and effectiveness typical of prose poetry.

There has been presented a variety of religiously derived phrasemes and they have been analysed in order to determine a feature of style and a linguistic manner of creation of the world presented in the novel. In mental world of the characters of Trilogy, religion is the only worldview, and religiousness is the approach affecting all aspects of life. For instance, Swedish invaders are characterized as people wandering off religion, whereas Poles emphasise their „folk” religiousness, f.e. among gentry, soldiers, servants, etc.

Opis:
The article analyses myths concerning menstruation in Izabela Filipiak’s and Olga Tokarczuk’s creative works. The writers refer to female physiology in order to abolish the taboo on the female body and its excretions and to create mythology free from the male universe. Menstruation is considered a taboo subject even at the beginning of the 21st century and this physiological aspect of feminity is connected with an attempt to respect the differences between the sexes. One can observe not so much an attempt to destroy the rules of patriarchal culture, but a need to recreate the Western imagination, which is able to renew social and symbolic order and create new female mythology, which enables women to identify with their own needs, feelings, physical, sexual and erotic experiences.

The article is a review of Dorota Siwor’s monography entitled Traces of Myth and Ritual On Contemporary Polish Prose (Tropy mitu i rytuału. O polskiej prozie współczesnej – nie tylko najnowszej). The affinities between literature and myth (and the ritual that is associated with myth) are analysed in this book from several perspectives – those of structure, theme, and function. Dorota Siwor’s interpretations generally focus on Polish prose composed in the second half of the twentieth century and the first several years of the twenty-first century (the literary works written by Andrzej Stasiuk, Olga Tokarczuk, Wilhelm Dichter, but also by Czesław Miłosz, Tadeusz Konwicki, Tadeusz Nowak and others). Essays included in this book are interpretative, but some of them also offer a systematic account. In this monograph, the main problem – the mythization strategy in prose – is explained as a type of search (search for order in the surrounding world, search for the origins and search for oneself). The analyses in mythical and ritualistic contexts highlight the interesting tendencies in prose but also show some kind of different topography (topography of mythization) and ritual of reading (not only private but also more universal).
