Opis:
The text is a polemic with critical literary studies that recognize Kazimiera Alberti as a poet creating “light and simple” works. In the volume Kalinowa Hour can be traced wealth of tradition from which the poet drew: from the Franciscan, by biblical references, to the Kabbalah. In addition, the poems of the Alberti contain “crevices and cracks” which, interpreted in the context of Kierkegaard’s philosophy, Derrida and Agata Bielik-Robson’s works, may indicate the originality of poet. Going beyond the ideas of minoritas and fraternitas lead the careful reader to the metaphor of the string and interesting reflections on the desire and animating attitude of insatiability. The intuition that the poet has overtaken her age is not only the poems, but their realization and extension – a rich and extraordinary life.

Julije Benešć’s correspondence with Polish scholars, people of culture, writers, and numerous acquaintances and friends began in his school years and lasted until his death. A large collection of letters and postcards sent to him by Poles has been collected in the HAZU library in Zagreb, but unfortunately it has not yet been put in order, and some items have been lost. The materials in the collection were only collected in the form of a list prepared by Ivan Meden in 1978. This text presents letters from Maria Kuncewiczowa, which provide information about the relations of Polish writers with the Croatian popularizer of their works and about the writer’s perception of the Polish literary scene in the years 1920s.

Opis:
The paper focuses on an undercurrent analysis of social problems present in almost all Kazimiera Alberti’s work written in an interwar period. A kind of “hierarchy” of people suffering from social, economic, ethnic and gender inequality is evident in Alberti’s works. This “hierarchy” could be considered as hell circles, although a gradation of pain and misery depends on a level of social rejection, not on committed sins. Alberti puts cultural and ethnic hybrids in the deepest circle of hell – those people are perceived as others/aliens (and often not as human beings) by both (or more) cultures/communities, they are “made” from.

The article is devoted to Bruno Schulz’s meetings with musicians. It shows not only a partial biography of the author of The Cinnamon Shops, filtered by these encounters, but also smaller fragments of lives of his friends. These intersected biographies create a story about inter-war contacts and relationships, which resulted in numerous epistolography and post-war memories that focused on Schulz’s life and oeuvre. The author of this text talks about the influence that these contacts might have had on Schulz’s perception of music and musicians. Furthermore, it shows how he translated these experiences into his prose. In the archive of Schulz’s life and work we can find traces of meetings with several music artists. There are also some traces of these meetings in the descriptions of organ grinders at Sanatorium Under The Sign of The Hourglass, Jewish musicians who we will find concerts in the story Spring, as well as in the descriptions of park and cafe musicians, mentioned in both series of stories. However, knowledge of these relationships survived primarily due to the letters. It should be noted that the preserved materials from his meetings with musicians have never been the subject of schulzology research in its entirety. Musicians inspired a few fragments of Schulz’s short stories. Artists whom he met at the beginning of the 20th century were not only performers of pre-war Poland, in particular his hometown of Drohobych, and Lviv, Warsaw, but also of Vienna and Paris. These friendships were important for his musical education, they shaped his thinking about music and his image of musicians. They must have had an impact on the descriptions of sounds in the world depicted in The Cinnamon Shops and his other stories, and finally — after the Holocaust — they let the legacy of Bruno Schulz be saved.

Opis:
The article presents detailed analyses of the irregular sound organisation of the two wings of Polish interwar avant-garde poetry: futurism and the constructivist group Awangarda Krakowska. The starting point of the research is the ‘musicality’ of symbolist poetry, expanded and overcome by the avant-gardists. Members of both groups paid special attention to the acoustics of poetry creatively employing devices such as paro-nomasia, onomatopoeia, alliteration, anaphora etc. However, the futurist practice proved more complicated, more diverse and less consistent (sometimes even dada-like). The phonostylistics of Awangarda Krakowska, although still highly innovative, was more ‘disciplined’, logical and focused on motivating the metaphors by sounds. The experi-ments of both groups were revived in the Polish post-war poetry (especially in the cur-rents such as poezja lingwistyczna and the present neolingwizm). It is usually impossible to discriminate between the futurist and constructivist inspirations in the post-war works: sound concepts typical of futurism tend to be used in a more logical, consistent and metaphor-centred way. Hence, the author introduces the term “new musicality” refer-ring to the specific and still vivid poetics of sound, first employed by the Polish avant-gardists.

The article discusses the background of Eleonora Kalkowska’s best-known play, Sprawa Jakubowskiego [The Case of Jakubowski], 1929. It is also a reconstruction of the work’s reception in Poland and Germany. The diplomatic materials uncovered in the archives, which shed a new light on the trial of a Polish farm labourer sentenced to death in the Weimar Republic, draw out a broader context and the political tensions surrounding the writer’s stage debut. The author of the article also analyzes the diametrically different modes of reading the drama at Berlin’s Volksbühne and Warsaw’s Ateneum, which led to its becoming the subject of national appropriations, particularly in the case of the play’s Polish reception.

Tekst Synowie Stasia. Męskości kolonialne w powieściach młodzieżowych Ferdynanda Antoniego Ossendowskiego stanowi analizę wątków inicjacyjnych w trzech tekstach narracyjnych popularnego prozaika z czasów dwudziestolecia międzywojennego: powieści W poleskiej dżungli, Mali zwycięzcy i Skarb Wysp Andamańskich.
The article The Sons of Staś. Colonial Masculinities in Ferdynand Antoni Ossendowski’s Youth Novels analyses the motif of male initiation in three narrative texts of the Polish popular writer from the interwar period: W poleskiej dżungli [In the Polesian Jungle], Mali zwycięzcy [Little Winners] and Skarb Wysp Andamańskich [The Treasure of the Andaman Islands]. Referring to postcolonial theory and the analysis of ideological discourses of the Second Polish Republic, the author examines novels with the aim to show representations of different cultures, masculinity models that existed in Poland and abroad in that period, and methods of their adaptation for the needs of children’s and youth literature.

Opis:
The subject of the article is a pioneering in Poland critical conception of the fantastic developed by highly esteemed prewar author of the fantastic literature, Stefan Grabiński. The crucial, remarkable comments referring to fantastic literature were comprised by Grabiński in his extensive essay entitled On fantastic literature. The dissertation in question was never published in whole, however, to find its issue while his life in merely two short parts of it in press edition. In the first part of the article the archival documents were used (mainly the letters) which enabled the reconstruction of puzzling history of the manuscript of said essay now probably lost forever. In the second part, basing on the published parts of the essay, as well as other critical statements of the Polish writer, the main aspects of Grabiński’s theory were discussed. Upon the profound analyses made therefrom it appeares that Grabiński perceived and gave the fantastic genre a unique meaning and value, notably owing to its specific privileged language exposing metaphysical expression of the Mystery. The writer managed to depict in accurate, innovative and convincing way the character of fantastic literature, both in terms of historical and anthropological origin of this kind of literary creativity, and its aesthetics, social and philosophical attributes what makes these researchers innovative and even anticipativewith reference to the corresponding studies of postwar literature theoreticians of fantastic genre (e.g. L. Vax, R. Caillois, T. Todorov). Discursive statements on the issue of fantastic literature of Grabiński are further related to much wider phenomenon which was focused on developing critical analysis of fantastic literature in Poland in the first decades of the twentieth century.

Opis:
Current research into the life and work of Kazimiera Alberti, a poet and writer popular in the interwar period, connected from 1930 with Biała Krakowska, owes a great deal to Jacek Proszyk, who in 2009 staged a spectacle based on her biography at the Teatr Polski in Bielsko Biała called The Literary Salon of Kazimiera Alberti. It was followed by a spate of publications which, at this point, form a body of work ready for reassessment. This article deals with one of them, written by Karolina Pospiszil, where it is claimed that the heroine of Ci, którzy przyjdą (Those Who Will Come, 1934), Helena Rumiszewska, is both a stereotyped, idealized female character. Focusing on the episodes which belie that description and show a character of considerable complexity driven by an emancipatory desire. She is not free from doubt when faced with various dilemmas, yet does she represent the ideal of the New Woman? This article addresses this question and discusses the issue of emancipation in the broader context of bourgeois culture and class, i.e. the social milieu o which Helena belongs.

Opis:
Jalu Kurek, a prominent member of the Cracow avant-garde, is the author of several novels. This article discusses the undeservedly neglected S.O.S., published in 1927, and suggests that its weird plotting and literary mockery is in fact an apocalyptic narrative. It has a place, it is argued, in the 'catastrophist' trends which were on the rise in the Polish literature of the late 1920s and 1930s. It should be read in the context of a growing sense of decline and crisis of European society, which, on the one hand, drew on the cultural pessimism of the turn of the 19th century, and, on the other hand, was a reaction against the wave of modernization that was sweeping the world. As this analysis shows, Jalu Kurek's S.O.S. is deeply ambivalent about the onslaught of modernity.

Opis:
French-speaking Belgium between WW1 and WW2 was very interested in the new states that emerged in Central and Eastern Europe after the fall of the German, Austrian and Russian Empires. Poland in particular was the subject of much attention. Examples include the creation, under the auspices of the Polish government, of the first Belgian chair of Slavic studies in 1926, which was held by a Pole, Wacław Lednicki; Polish writers’ visits to Brussels (Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, Jan Lechoń) as part of the activities organized by the Belgian PEN Club; the presence of Polish authors, classical or contemporary, in several French-speaking Belgian journals such as Le flambeau and Journal des poètes; the mediation work done by the writer Robert Vivier — to whom we owe some translations of contemporary Polish poets — or the hellenist Henri Grégoire, who sometimes put aside his own discipline — Byzantine studies — to translate and present Polish writers (among others Adam Mickiewicz and Juliusz Słowacki). In this article, I study and relate these events — which arguably prepared the ground for post-war years marked by the presence in Brussels of well-known polonists such as Claude Backvis and Alain Van Crugten — in order to sketch a picture of the reception, in the 1920’s and the 1930’s, of Polish literature in French-speaking Belgium.

This article is an attempt to present a comprehensive view of the poetry of Józef Czechowicz in the context of Martin Heidegger's fundamental ontology. Czechowicz's poetic work, the article argues, is an exploration of mutual relations of the basic ontological categories of being and nothingness (das Sein and das Nichts). They constitute the philosophical foundations of the purely literary tensions that can be detected in all comprehensive accounts of his work, such as the opposition of Arcadia and Catastrophy (Tadeusz Kłak) or the discussion of the ‘bright’ and the ‘dark’ strain in the poetry of the Second Avant-garde (Jerzy Kwiatkowski).

Each of those poems foregrounds its principal historical character. Wyspiański's dramatic poems, commonly known as Rhapsodies, focus on Kazimierz the Great, Bolesław the Bold, and Piast. kings of pivotal significance in his vision of Poland's historical destiny. Twenty years later Tytus Czyżewski, an acclaimed avant-garde painter and poet, composed a poetic-essayistic salmagundi, in which he sought to render in a similarly elevated style and condensed dialogue the drama of the leaders of the French Revolution, Robespierre and Danton. While Robespierre has to face, apart from some common people, God, the Spirit and Judges that sit in judgment on him, the final section of Rhapsody evokes Juliusz Słowacki. A monologue, mimicking his lofty verse, establishes a metaphorical common thread in Polish history – from the days of mail-clad knights to the wretched everyday life in the trenches – set against a broad background of wars, destruction and the French Revolution. For Czyżewski the French Revolution was a ground-breaking event, the first act of a great historical process that ushered in the Modern Age with its ideas of progress, reason, freedom, social justice, the elimination of poverty. It continues to inspire mankind with the hope that even a most ambitious change is possible. For Wyspiański, on the other hand, the grand project of human emancipation does give rise to doubts whether a wholesale obliteration of the Old is justified and to questions about God, free will, theodicy and destiny, and the 'tyranny of reason'. The differences between the two philosophies of history – Wyspiański's, from the turn of the 19th century, and Czyżewski's, representative of the artistic and intellectual climate of the late 1920s – are no doubt profound, and yet, what both of them seem to share is a deep concern with the relevance of history for the present and for designing the future.
