Opis:

This paper examines the structure and translation of industry and military abbreviations compiled by Józef Krasny in the Moscow Russian-Polish dictionary. The first section refers to abbreviations as language units and focusing on the interwar period, provides a brief historical context of abbreviations in the Russian language. It further describes terminological and classification problems and refers to selected aspects of translation.The paper aims first and foremost to analyse the structure of the extracted initialisms, syllabic and complex abbreviations and clipped forms. In addition, it deals with models of their translation and lexicographic representation. Ultimately, it evaluates if the choice of Polish equivalents for Russian abbreviations in the dictionary in question is adequate and consistent.

Opis:

A purpose of the article is to present and characterize proper names registered in the German-Polish dictionary by Krzysztof Celestyn Mrongovius (1853/54) with particular consideration of toponyms, especially geographical names, choronyms and hydronyms. Rich and diversified onomastic material, adorned by frequently interesting and valuable remarks by Mrongovius, proves the lexicographer’s good knowledge of the then current as well historical geography, mostly European and Polish, including the lands that were the dearest to him: Pomerania, Warmia and Masuria. Comprehensive acumen of a profoundly and scrupulously educated European of the mid 19th century is confirmed here.

Monografia zawiera między innymi opis literatury przedmiotu oraz rozważania teoretyczne, dotyczące zjawiska tzw. hominimii międzyjęzykowej. Znaleźć w niej można również słowniczek wybranych białorusko-polskich hominimów międzyjęzykowych.

Opis:

In French, there exists a kind of infinitive subordinate clause (ICP) introduced by a perception verb like voir, regarder, entendre, écouter and sentir. These structures, composed of a noun phrase and an infinitive verb, do not exist in Polish. This anisomorphism implies difficulties of translation and bilingual dictionaries are one of the potential sources of knowledge about the ways of translating the ICP structures into Polish. We analysed the articles of the five French perception verbs from several contemporary French-Polish dictionaries in order to verify how their authors deal with the lexicographic treatment of the ICP. The general conclusion is that the investigated structure is usually not given in all five perception verb entries of the same dictionary, and the choice of these entries seems to be random. What is more, in most of them, we only found set expressions containing the ICP clause and not free phrases. Frequently, the latter simply appear among examples of the use of the verb headword. Concerning the Polish equivalents, their choice is random too and it happens that the most frequent of them, the jak P (“as P”) structure, is not given. Thus, the microstructure of the analysed entries needs to be improved.

Byli to: Żyd Izaak syn Abrahama, szlachcic Jan Kierdej, żona sułtana Roksolana, podróżnik Krzysztof Pawłowski, kupiec Sefer Muratowicz, szlachcic Marcin Paszkowski herbu Zadora, tłumacze Samuel Otwinowski, Franciszek Mesgnien-Meniński i Jerzy Franciszek Kulczycki, biskup ormiański Deodat Nersesowicz, sekretarz poselstwa Stanisław Małachowski, Włoch Franciszek Giuliani, architekt Jan Chryzostom Orłowski, rezydent polski w Stambule Stanisław Kostka Pichelstein, historyk, hungarysta i etnograf Jan Reychman (1910–1975). Wszystkie te biogramy zostały zaopatrzone w obszerną i różnojęzyczną bibliografię tematu oraz źródła archiwalne. Mimo upływu ponad dwudziestu lat od jego śmierci nie uległy one dezaktualizacji, bowiem do ich opracowania zostały wykorzystane wszelkie możliwe materiały dotyczące opisywanych osób. Są one dowodem na doskonały warsztat naukowy Z. Abrahamowicza, jako językoznawcy i historyka Wschodu, pokazują też jego wysoką erudycję.
Dr Zygmunt Abrahamowicz (1923–1990), a prominent Turkologist, historian, and linguist of Karaite origin living Cracow, cooperated with the board of editors of Polish Biographical Dictionary for 30 years. Over that period of time he prepared 15 biographies of persons engaged in oriental studies and the Orient who lived between the 15th and the 20th centuries. They were as follows: Isaac the Jew, son of Abraham; the Polish nobleman Jan Kierdej; Roksolana – the wife of a sultan; the traveller Krzysztof Pawłowski; the merchant Sefer Muratowicz; the Polish nobleman Marcin Paszkowski of Zadora Coat of Arms; the translators Samuel Otwinowski, Franciszek Mesgnien-Meniński and Jerzy Franciszek Kulczycki; the Armenian bishop Deodat Nersesowicz; the legation secretary Stanisław Małachowski; Italian Franciszek Giuliani; thearchitect Jan Chryzostom Orłowski, the Polish resident in Istanbul Stanisław Kostka Pichelstein; the historian, hungarologist and ethnographer Jan Reychman (1910–1975). Dr Abrahamowicz provided all his biographies with a comprehensive and multilingual bibliography on the subject as well as archival sources. They are still not outdated despite the fact that over 20 years have passed since the death of the author. This is because he used all the available materials regarding the above-mentioned persons when preparing their biographies. This proves that Z. Abrahamowicz employed excellent research methods as a linguist and historian of the East. It is also testimony to his most profound erudition.

The aim of the article is to demonstrate the usefulness of Erazm Rykaczewski’s Słownik języka polskiego for the research on the regional diversity of Polish. The comparison of the register of 19th-century Modern Polish regionalisms, which I compiled, with theprovincialisms recorded in SR showed that, although the dictionary only included 176 of the analysed units, it also collected 27 new units, not recorded at all or not classified as elements of regional Polish in any of the dictionary publications I analysed. Hence, the results prove that SR is an interesting material base for lexicological research on regional Polish.

The present paper is the second of two papers investigating polyglot dictionaries which comprised Polish and English wordlists. It rests on the assumption that, by providing the earliest documentation material for Polish and English respectively, the polyglots can be regarded as historical antecedents of bilingual dictionaries. While the first paper focused on three Renaissance works of reference, including Calepino’s eleven-language edition, this one concentrates on two relatively little known endeavours of the Enlightenment: Christoph Warmer’s Gazophylacium decem linguarum Europaearum … (1691) and Peter Simon Pallas’ Linguarum totius orbis vocabularia comparativa … (1787–1789). The bilingual material they embrace has been analysed and illustrated with examples in order to shed new light on the two polyglots, which are additionally traced back to their sources.

This paper aims to provide a survey of the early polyglot dictionaries which paired Polish with English, based on the premise that the polyglots can be considered as predecessors of bilingual dictionaries proper. Following this rationale, the authoress examines chronologically the first three of the multilingual endeavours: Ambrogio Calepino’s Dictionarium undecim linguarum … (1590), Hieronymus Megiser’s Thesaurus polyglottus: vel, dictionarium multilingue … (1603), and Georg Henisch’s Teütsche Sprach und Weissheit. Thesaurus linguae and sapientiae Germanicae … (1616). The focus is primarily on the linguistic material of the polyglots, but the assumed aims and readership are also tackled briefly. As bilingual wordbooks have traditionally catered to the needs of users of one or both of the respective languages, the polyglot dictionaries are additionally looked at from the perspective of Polish-English language contact in the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries.

Authors of this paper present a development of a visual web dictionary based on automatic extraction of verbs and their attributes from texts using the inflection dictionary of Polish language. Entries of the designed dictionary are based on triples: subject (agent) + predicate (action) + object/tool. The paper describes a prototype implementation of such a dictionary. In the paper the background for the research is presented as well as the considered problem is outlined. Moreover, the structure of the inflection dictionary of Polish language is described along with the classification of computer dictionaries. In the implementation part of the paper, the architecture of the developed web dictionary and the extraction algorithm are described.

This article concerns a specific language-code that was used by the Poles living in the territory of the Soviet Union in the interwar period. The introductory section outlines the history of the Polish minority in the USSR, discusses the major premises of the ethnic policy of the Soviet authorities employed with respect to ethnic minorities and presents the features of the Soviet Polish language. The empirical section is focused on the analysis of the entries from the Russian-Polish dictionary of Józef Krasny. It is established that the equivalents of the Russian units placed in this dictionary are classified to the Soviet Polish language. This aspect is seen on the lexical, inflective and syntactic grounds.

Opis:

Professor Włodzimierz Zajączkowski (1914–1982), a prominent Turkologist, cooperated with the board of editors of Polish Biographical Dictionary for almost 30 years. Over that period of time he published 10 biographies, mostly of Karaims who lived between the 16th and the 20th centuries. They were as follows: Isaac ben Abraham from Troki, author of the work Chizzuk emuna, Josef Malinowski, his student, Iliasz Karaimowicz, Colonel Perejaslav, Mordechai ben Nisan, historian and philologist, Sima Izaak Lutski, author of 25 works, Josef Salomon Lutski, hazzan in Eupatoria, Bogusław Firkowicz, the hazzan in Troki, Aleksander Mardkowicz, founder of the Karaim publishing house in Lutsk and the periodical “Karaj Awazy“, Josef Lobanos, hazzan in Vilna, as well as the only non-Karaim in this group, Jan Grzegorzewski, journalist, ethnographer and orientalist. The biographies  authored by Zajączkowski were typically small volumes with a modest source basis, which was due to editorial restrictions and problems with obtaining sources and literature on the subject during this period. Nevertheless, his biographies offer a solid foundation for further in-depth academic research on the characters described in these texts, which is especially valuable of karaimologists.
Profesor Włodzimierz Zajączkowski (1914–1982) znany turkolog, współpracował z Polskim Słownikiem Biograficznym przez prawie 30 lat. W tym okresie opublikował dziesięć biogramów, w tym w większości Karaimów, którzy żyli między XVI a XX wiekiem. Byli to: Izaak ben Abrahama z Trok, autor dzieła Chizzuk emuna, Józef Malinowski, jego uczeń, Iliasz Karaimowicz, pułkownik perejasławski, Mordechaj ben Nisan, historyk i filolog, Sima Izaak Łucki, autor 25 prac, Józef Salomon Łucki, hazzan w Eupatorii, Bogusław Firkowicz, hazzan w Trokach, Aleksander Mardkowicz, twórca wydawnictwa karaimskiego w Łucku i czasopisma „Karaj Awazy“, Józef Łobanos, hazzan w Wilnie oraz jedyny nie-Karaim, Jan Grzegorzewski, dziennikarz, etnograf i orientalista. Biogramy jego autorstwa charakteryzowały się małą objętością i skromną podstawą źródłową, co wiązało się z ograniczeniami redakcyjnymi i problemami z pozyskiwaniem źródeł i literatury tematu w omawianym okresie. Nie mniej biogramy jego są solidnym zaczynem do dalszych pogłębionych badań naukowych nad opisywanymi postaciami, cennym szczególnie dla karaimologów.

Opis:

The Polish Biographical Dictionary (Polski Słownik Biograficzny, abbr. PSB) is one of the most prestigious publications in Polish historiography. Published since 1935, with the editorial board domiciled in Cracow, at 17 Sławkowska St.; from 1935 to 1949, under the patronage of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences [PAU], 1958–99 – Institute of History, Polish Academy of Sciences [IH PAN]; since 1999 – both PAN and PAU, with IH PAN acting as the publisher. During the eighty-five years of its existence (temporarily discontinued during the Second World War and the Stalinist period, 1949–58), fifty-two volumes with almost 28,000 biographical entries were published, arranged alphabetically – from ‘Abakanowicz’ to ‘Taube’, and chronologically spanning from the legendary King Popiel until persons who died in 2000. The Dictionary was founded by Władysław Konopczyński, a professor of the Jagiellonian University of Cracow, who was its first editor-in-chief (in 1935–49). Professor Emanuel Rostworowski, his former student and editor-in-chief in 1964–89, heavily contributed to bringing the project up to top standard, which was maintained by his successors, literary historians Professor Henryk Markiewicz (1989–2002) and, from 2003 onwards, Professor Andrzej Romanowski. Between December 2014 and 2019, more than 8,500 entries were digitalised and made available at: www.ipsb.nina.gov.pl.

The article presents an analysis of lexicographic description and structure of abbreviations registered in the Russian-Polish Great Sports Dictionary by Zbigniew Fedus. The introductory part defines the purpose of the research and characterizes the source of language material. Each of the analytical parts was preceded by a theoretical outline of the issues discussed - the translation of acronyms and their construction. In the course of work, four models of lexicographic description and two basic structural types of abbreviations were distinguished; each part is illustrated by examples. The article ends with a summary, including statistic matters.

The oldest construction vocabulary in the Polish language (outline of the issue) The article presents an outline of the research problems of construction vocabulary contained in the Old Polish Dictionary, collecting words until the year 1500. Preliminary analyzes have shown that the oldest layer of vocabulary in this field relates to wooden construction, widespread in Poland from the earliest times. The text presents a proposed classification of the material and discusses several thematic groups: names of buildings, tools, materials, construction activities. Then, the prospects for further research were outlined: the need for a complete thematic classification of the construction vocabulary used in the Old Polish era was indicated, as well as to determine its origin, including words related to building common to all Slavic languages and dialectal names used only in certain Slavic areas, and for both groups to determine which words were taken from the Proto-Slavic or even Proto-Indo-European era, and which and when were borrowed from foreign languages. The next stage of research would include words newly created in Polish from native forms and words borrowed into Polish in the Middle Ages. On the basis of the collected material, it was initially indicated that Old Polish borrowings in construction vocabulary come less frequently from Czech and Latin, and the greatest number from German.

Opis:

Artykuł poświęcony jest projektowi bułgarsko-polskiego słownika stałych powiązań czasownikowo-nominalnych. Autorki zauważają ogromną popularność tego typu połączeń we współczesnej słowiańszczyźnie oraz duże nasycenie tymi formami tekstów administracyjnych, urzędniczych, sądowych i tekstów literatury pięknej. Ich zdaniem przygotowany bułgarsko-polski słownik powiązań czasownikowo-nominalnych ułatwi tłumaczenie coraz większej liczby dokumentów (m.in. w kontekście członkostwa obu krajów w UE) i jest pomostem w leksykografii. Potencjalny tom słownika zawiera około 2 tysiące haseł zawierających ponad 6 tysięcy bułgarskich wyrażeń czasownikowo-nominalnych z polskimi odpowiednikami. Każde przedstawione połączenie składa się z segmentu nominalnego wyrażonego przez rzeczownik abstrakcyjny oraz segmentu czasownikowego.
The article is devoted to the project of the Bulgarian-Polish dictionary of constant verb-nominal connections. The authors notice a huge popularity of this type of connections in modern Slavonics and a large saturation of administrative, office-, judicial texts as well as texts of belles-lettres with these forms. In their opinion, the prepared Bulgarian-Polish dictionary of verb-nominal connections will facilitate translation of the bigger and bigger number of documents (among other things, in the context of the membership of both countries in the EU) and will bridge in the lexicography. The prospective volume of the dictionary contains approximately 2 thousands of entry-articles containing above 6 thousand Bulgarian verb-nominal type expressions with Polish equivalents. Every presented connection consists of a nominal segment expressed by an abstract noun and a verbal segment.

This article presents an analysis of the names of diseases and their symptoms in Słownik polsko-łacińsko-łotewski (The Polish-Latin-Latvian dictionary) by Jan Kurmin (ed. Vilnius, 1858). The number of excerpted lexical items (377) is presented in 11 semantic fields (from the most expanded to the smallest one): diseases of the motor system, skin diseases, respiratory system diseases, symptoms of multiple diseases, internal diseases, infectious diseases, diseases of the sensory organs, wounds and cuts, digestive system diseases, mental diseases, cardiovascular diseases. The analysis shows that despite the high ability to observe symptoms, the knowledge of treatments remained limited, which is why the dictionary presents mostly diseases that can be easily observed with the unaided eye. The non-professional character of the dictionary is also evidenced by the use of synonymous sequences, vocabulary with indistinct meaning, and descriptive names of diseases.

Opis:

The aim of this article is to continue the discussion on issues related to onomastic terminology, the necessity of its harmonization and normalization (concept → term). An approximate stock of anthroponomastic terms, as well as the preliminary concept of a dictionary development of terms, were indicated as part of the project “Polish onomastic terminology”. In selected examples, synonymy, the variation of terms, the coexistence of native and foreign forms (usually adapted from Greek or Latin), the rationality of new terms, doublets with a grammatical number are shown in the context of current tradition and research practice. Attention was drawn to the need to indicate, in the planned terminological dictionary, the preferred, acceptable and non-recommended terms, limiting the variants, and justifying the new terms with the need for use.
Celem artykułu jest kontynuacja dyskusji nad kwestiami związanymi z terminologią onomastyczną, koniecznością jej harmonizacji i normalizacji (pojęcie → termin). Wskazany został przybliżony zasób terminów antroponomastycznych oraz wstępna koncepcja słownikowego opracowania terminów w ramach projektu „Polska terminologia onomastyczna”. Na wybranych przykładach pokazano w kontekście dotychczasowej tradycji i praktyki badawczej synonimię, wariantywność jednostek terminologicznych, współwystępowanie form rodzimych i obcych (zwykle adaptowanych greckich lub łacińskich), racjonalność nowych terminów, dublety z liczbą gramatyczną. Zwrócono uwagę na potrzebę wskazania w planowanym słowniku terminologicznym terminów preferowanych, dopuszczalnych i niezalecanych, ograniczenia wariantów, uzasadnienia nowych terminów potrzebą użycia.

The nineteenth century is the time of the implementation of the classical grammarschool. Its program was arrange so that high school graduates could become Latin fluentlyin speech and writing. During this time were published numerous textbooks and dictionariesfor school use. Among them The Polish-Latin Dictionary by Antoni Bielikowicz.Nowadays dictionary has forgotten, although considered to be the best of Polish-Latindictionaries (it contains the most extensive number of passwords, has a clear structure andrich exemplification). The purpose of this paper is an attempt to the general characteristicsof this dictionary and answer questions: 1) which passwords contains this dictionary;what is the principle of selection passwords; what picture of the world emerges from thisdictionary – what can say the person who will use this dictionary?; 2) if this dictionarycan be an important source of research on Polish lexicon of nineteenth century? The lexicalbackdrop, which will be the basis for analysis, were made a The Polish LanguageDictionary by Samuel Linde and The Vilnius Dictionary.

The aim of the article is to preliminarily analyse the Polish anthropological terminology included in the most important 19th-century Kraków Słownik terminologii lekarskiej polskiej [Dictionary of Polish Medical Terminology] by S. Janikowski, J. Oettinger and A. Kremer, which was created during the period when anthropology was emerging as a new science. Anthropological terms had appeared in Kraków’s medical dictionaries before (over 40%), but it was in S 1881 that they were first distinguished from medical terminology and marked with the qualifier antr. The anthropological terminology for S 1881 was prepared by prominent anthropologists who were also physicians: I. Kopernicki and J. Majer. Out of 195 Polish terms, over 70% apply to craniology and craniometry, reflecting the main direction of the development in Polish anthropology. The Polish terms are definitely indigenous. More than 80% are one- (55.4%) and two-element terms (26.2%). Synonymy is present in the analysed terminology (40.4%), although there is a visible tendency to limit the number of Polish terms in synonymic series to two (73.7%).

Opis:

The article is focused on description of the sociolect of polish female basketball players. Through the analysis of spoken (recordings from the matches and press conferences) and written sources (websites dedicated to female basketball) it was possible to create the basketball dictionary with about 160 lexical entries. The basketball lexicon consists of words taken from other sociolects and those created inside the basketball environment. It is affected by two main opposing tendencies - to precision and sparing with words. The sociolect of female basketball players is focused on the game and its rules in offense and defense, how the basketball court looks like and how the players call for each other. The language tendencies, characteristic for the sport, such as: metaphor of a basketball match as a war, appreciation of bravery, reflex and common work for the good of the team, are also visible.
Artykuł stanowi próbę opisu socjolektu zawodniczek żeńskich drużyn koszykarskich.Dzięki analizie źródeł mówionych (nagrania z meczów i konferencji prasowych) oraz pisanych (strony poświęcone koszykówce żeńskiej) udało się stworzyć słownik koszykarski liczący około 160 jednostek leksykalnych, rejestrujący jedynie słownictwo swoiste.Na leksykę socjolektu koszykarskiego składają się zarówno jednostki leksykalne przejęte z innych źródeł, jak i te wytworzone bezpośrednio na gruncie środowiskowym.Wpływają na nią dwie przeciwstawne tendencje – do precyzji i skrótu.Koncentruje się ona wokół gry i jej elementów – sposobów i zasad gry w ataku i obronie, wyglądu boiska, nazw zawodniczek.W leksyce koszykarskiej uwidacznia się charakterystyczny dla odmian sportowych językowy obraz świata: metafora meczu jako wojny, docenianie waleczności, refleksu oraz gry zespołowej i wspólnej pracy dla dobra drużyny.

W artykule przestawiono Słownik pracowników książki polskiej (1972, 1986, 2000, 2010, 2016) jako podstawowe źródło z zakresu biografistyki bibliologicznej do badań nad dziejami książki polskiej za granicą od XV do XXI w. Wskazano ośrodki polonijne rozsiane w świecie – od dalekiej Brazylii poprzez bliższe Polsce kraje zachodniej i południowej Europy aż do północnych rubieży państwa carów, później Związku Radzieckiego. Dokonana analiza zawartości publikacji pozwala stwierdzić, iż twórcy instytucji książki polskiej za granicą i ich pracownicy (było ich ok. 170) reprezentują wszystkie profesje związane z produkcją, gromadzeniem i dystrybucją książek, a funkcjonowanie owych placówek i ludzi w środowiskach polonijnych odegrało znaczącą rolę w podtrzymywaniu polskości i świadomości narodowej oraz w zachowaniu więzi rodaków z krajem w przeszłości i w czasach nam współczesnych.
The paper presents The Dictionary of Polish Book Professionals (editions: 1972, 1986, 2000, 2010 and 2016) as a main source of biographies of people engaged in the history of Polish book abroad since 15th to 21st century. The author pointed out Polish communities all over the world: from Brasil, through west and south European countries, to the north edge of the tsars’ country, latter Soviet Union. The analysis of the Dictionary’s content proves, that creators of the Polish book institutions abroad and their workers – 170 persons in total – represent all professions related to production, collection and distribution of books. People and institutions of Polish book working within Polish communities abroad influenced significantly maintenance of the Polish culture and national awareness, as well as the Poles’ connections with the country today and in the past.

Implementation of the Bulgarian-Polish online dictionaryThe paper describes the implementation of an online Bulgarian-Polish dictionary as a technological tool for applications in digital humanities. This bilingual digital dictionary is developed in the frame of the joint research project “Semantics and Contrastive Linguistics with a focus on a bilingual electronic dictionary” between IMI-BAS and ISS-PAS, supervised by L. Dimitrova (IMI-BAS) and V. Koseska-Toszewa (ISS-PAS). In addition, the main software tools for web-presentation of the dictionary are described briefly.

Artykuł omawia problemy dotyczące opisu naw własnych w Wielkim słowniku języka polskiego PAN, który opracowywany jest od 2007 roku i publikowany w Internecie pod adresem http://wsjp.pl . Pierwsza część tekstu jest poświęcona kwestii celowości notowania nazw własnych w słownikach ogólnych języka naturalnego (przypomniano negatywne opinie na ten temat), następnie przedstawiono projekt opisu nazw własnych w wymienionym słowniku (przede wszystkim nazwy geograficzne z ich derywatami), pochodzący z początkowego etapu prac nad nim i porównano ze stanem realizacji aktualnym w roku 2020. W części końcowej przedstawiono dalsze perspektywy opisu nazw własnych w Wielkim słowniku języka polskiego PAN.  
The article discusses problems related to proper name entries in Polish Academy of Sciences Great Dictionary of Polish. The dictionary has been under construction since 2007 and is available at the following URL: http://wsjp.pl. The first part of the text is devoted to the issue of reasonableness of including proper names in general dictionaries. Critical opinions on the issue raised in the past are recalled and discussed. What follows is a presentation on how  the description of proper names, especially geographical names and their derivatives, was envisaged in the early stages of works on the aforementioned dictionary. This vision is then compared with the actual state of being in the current version of the dictionary from 2020. In the final part, further prospects of describing proper names in Polish Academy of Sciences Great Dictionary of Polish are presented.

Opis:

The present text discusses the issues related to the phenomenon that is enormously important for the study of historical lexicography, namely the issue of usage notes and labelling practices used in dictionaries. The author focuses on the types of stylistic and context markers used in the dictionary compiled by J.S. Bandtkie, their differentiation and estimated frequency of application (frequency of occurrence of given markers against others), and the consistency in the application of specific solutions by the author of the dictionary. Special attention is given to some of the aspects of the use of grammatical information in J.S. Bandtkie’s work and to the consistency in using given adopted solutions. The article also includes some general remarks on the scientific merit of the dictionary, one of the most extensive, as far as the lexical resources are concerned, historical dictionaries of the Polish language.

Odpowiadając na postulaty środowiska językoznawczego, zaniepokojonego odległą perspektywą ukończenia tego monumentalnego dzieła, zespół autorski rozpoczął dyskusję nad wprowadzeniem zmian w sposobie opracowania SGP PAN. W artykule omówione zostały główne modyfikacje, które autorzy słownika zamierzają wprowadzić, a najważniejszą z nich jest przejście od tradycyjnej, drukowanej formy publikowania do wersji elektronicznej.
The subject of the article includes the future of the Dictionary of the Polish Dialects of PAN. Responding to the postulates of the linguists, who are anxious about the length of time within which this monumental work may be finished, the team of authors have started a discussion on introducing changes in the way of preparing the DPD of PAN. The article presents the main modifications which the lexicon authors are about to introduce. The most important of those changes includes the transition from the traditional, printed form of publishing to the electronic version.

The article is devoted to the structural basics of The Large Polish‑Ukrainian Phraseological Dictionary. Until recently, there had been no significant bilingual phraseological dictionary, which had made it difficult to comparatively study the phraseological systems of Polish and Ukrainian. The dictionary is based on lexicographic publications of various types, national language corpuses, and content. The article explains the principles of selecting phraseological units for the dictionary. Some phraseological units/idioms became the subject of lexicographic study for the first time. In detail is described the structure of the word explanations. During the selection of Ukrainian equivalents to the Polish output, taken into account is the fact that there are phraseological interlanguage homonyms – phraseological units/idioms that sound the same or similar in the two languages but that have different meanings. The dictionary contains an alphabetical register that includes all the components of the expressions/units. Thanks to such referencing, the reader can find the appropriate phrases in a single one word. The article describes the possibilities for the theoretical and applied solutions in the dictionary’s composition.

Opis:

The article deals with a Baltic etymology of the river name and place name Węgra, earlier Wągra (Northern Mazovia). It is suggested that the hydronym in question derives from Yatvingian *Wungrā and Baltic *Wingrā f. ‛winding, tortuous, crooked [river]’. Yatvingian is the only Baltic language showing the depalatalization of palatalized syllabic resonants at an early period. Three examples of such an exclusive phonological process are carefully reviewed. Two glosses exemplifying the sound change are found in the so-called Polish-Yatvingian dictionary (PYD ), also known as Zinov’s dictionary: Yatv. wułkʃ ‛wolf’ (PYD 25) < Balt. *wilkas, cf. Lithuanian vilkas, Latvian vìlks, OPrus. wilkis ‛id.’; Yatv. wułd ‛to want’ (PYD 3) < Balt. *wiltēi, cf. Lith. vìltis ‛to hope’, Latv. vilt ‛to cheat, swindle, delude’. The third instance, Yatv. wurszajtis ‛an aged priest offering a goat’ (cf. Lith. viršáitis ‛village-mayor, village-chief, elder in a village’, Latv. virsaitis ‛village-mayor’), is mentioned in the 16th century AD in Jan and Hieronim Malecki’s testimony on the Sudovians (i.e. Y atvingians) inhabiting the Sambia Peninsula.271-

Ks. Stanisław Bednarski SJ (1896-1942), jezuita z Prowincji Małopolskiej Towarzystwa Jezusowego, z entuzjazmem i energią przystąpił do realizacji podjętej przez prof. W. Konopczyńskiego wiekopomnej narodowej biografii – Polskiego Słownika Biograficznego (PSB). Bardzo szybko stał się jednym z jego najbardziej aktywnych współpracowników. 2 października 1937 r. został członkiem Komitetu Redakcyjnego PSB. Miał świadomość, że uczestniczy w tworzeniu trwałego pomnika kultury narodowej w postaci zbioru życiorysów ludzi różnych grup i zawodów, którzy na przestrzeni wieków przyczynili się do powstania gmachu kultury narodowej. Wybitnymi budowniczymi tego gmachu było także wielu jego współbraci zakonnych z Towarzystwa Jezusowego. W sześciu tomach PSB zamieścił 58 biogramów polskich jezuitów, którzy działali na ziemiach Rzeczypospolitej Obojga Narodów w XVII i XVIII wieku. W sposób rzeczowy, bezstronny i obiektywny przedstawił ich wkład do kultury narodowej. W biogramach wykorzystał bogaty materiał archiwalny zebrany przede wszystkim w centralnym Archiwum Towarzystwa Jezusowego w Valkenburgu (Holandia), Rzymie oraz Archiwum Prowincji Małopolskiej Towarzystwa Jezusowego w Krakowie. Niektóre z opracowanych przez niego biogramów zostały opublikowane w powojennych zeszytach PSB. Jego współpracę z PSB gwałtownie przerwał wybuch II wojny światowej. Ks. S. Bednarski zmarł na skutek szykan i wyczerpania, głodu i ciężkiej pracy 16 lipca 1942 roku w niemieckim obozie koncentracyjnym w Dachau k. Monachium.
Fr Stanisław Bednarski SJ (1896-1942), a Jesuit priest from the Province of the Małopolska Society of Jesus, enthusiastically and energetically joined the undertaking of Prof. W. Konopczyński to create a national biography – Polish Biographical Dictionary (PSB). He quickly became one of his most active collaborators. On October 2, 1937, he became a member of the PSB Editorial Board. He was aware that he was participating in the creation of a permanent monument of national culture in the form of a collection of biographies of people of various groups and professions, who over the centuries contributed to the founding of the national culture. Outstanding builders of this undertaking were also many of his fellows in the Society of Jesus. In six volumes of PSB, he published 58 biographies of Polish Jesuits, who were active in the lands of the Commonwealth of the Two Nations in the 17th and 18th centuries. In a substantive, impartial, and objective manner, he presented their contribution to national culture. In the biographies, Fr Bednarski used rich archival material collected primarily in the Central Archives of the Society of Jesus in Valkenburg (the Netherlands), Rome, and the Archives of the Province of the Małopolska Society of Jesus in Krakow. Some of his biographies have been published in postwar PSB notebooks. His collaboration with PSB was abruptly halted by the outbreak of World War II. Fr Bednarski died on July 16, 1942 as a result of harassment, exhaustion, hunger and hard work in the German concentration camp at Dachau near Munich.

A Short History of Polish-Ukrainian TerminographySpecialised dictionaries fulfil a plethora of linguistic and cognitive functions in specialised communication. In particular, such reference works help introduce, harmonise and standardise national terminologies, thus playing an indispensable role in disseminating high quality specialised knowledge. An even more important role may be attributed to bilingual and multilingual specialised dictionaries, whose primary goal is to facilitate the flow of scientific and technical information at an international level. This function has come to the fore in today’s multinational and interconnected professional world.In light of the developing and ever stronger cooperation between Poland and Ukraine, an attempt is being made to evaluate bilingual and multilingual terminographic works containing Polish and Ukrainian which have been published in Poland to date. The aim is to assess the positive developments and to identify the gaps in Polish-Ukrainian terminography. It is hoped that the findings presented in this paper will be applied by terminographers in order to compile terminological dictionaries of higher quality, which satisfy the needs of specific users and follow terminographic principles. Krótka historia terminografii polsko-ukraińskiejSłowniki specjalistyczne pełnią ważne funkcje lingwistyczne i kognitywne w komunikacji specjalistycznej. W szczególności dzieła terminograficzne umożliwiają rozpowszechnianie, harmonizację i standaryzację terminologii narodowych, stając się niezbędnym narzędziem w transferze wysokiej jakości wiedzy specjalistycznej. Jeszcze ważniejszą rolę można przypisać dwu- i wielojęzycznym słownikom specjalistycznym, których prymarnym celem jest ułatwienie przepływu informacji naukowej i technicznej w wymiarze globalnym, szczególnie w dzisiejszym jednoczącym się, wielonarodowościowym świecie.W świetle rozwijającej się coraz ściślejszej współpracy między Polską i Ukrainą w niniejszym artykule autor podejmuje się próby oceny opublikowanych w Polsce dwu- i wielojęzycznych dzieł terminograficznych z językami polskim i ukraińskim. Celem badania była ewaluacja pozytywnych oraz negatywnych aspektów praktyki terminograficznej polsko-ukraińskiej. Autor ma nadzieję, że wnioski przedstawione w niniejszej pracy znajdą zastosowanie w praktyce przy tworzeniu słowników coraz lepszej jakości, odpowiadających potrzebom konkretnych grup odbiorców oraz stosujących zasady współczesnej terminografii.

Opis:

The aim of the article is to discuss whether additional cultural information, explicitly formulated, i.e. apart from definitions in some types of entries and apart from linguistic material (collocations and quotations), should be included in a general monolingual dictionary. On the example of a few lexical units from the semantic field ‘Tradition’ the author points out that this kind of explanations will be valuable from the perspective of an intercultural and intergenerational mediation. As it appears, the elements of cultural description have to be divided between various fields of the microstructure of entries and, alas, the pattern of cultural information for the analyzed units should not be repeated. The author postulates another solution for some methodological problems which can be an additional field, allocated for the cultural information and closely connected with the definition.

The present article is a contribution to the study of the history of Polish-Russian linguistic contacts and focuses on the phenomenon of Russianisms (Russian expressions) in the Polish language, in particular on the phenomenon of lingering Russianisms in the Polish language during the inter-war period (1918–1939). The issue has not been sufficiently and thoroughly scholarly addressed so far. The article discusses the lexical borrowings from Russian that were used in the Polish language used in “Tygodnik Ilustrowany”. This weekly publication was published in Warsaw throughout the whole of the inter-war period in Poland. The analysis covers relevant vocabulary excerpted from five annual volumes of the periodical, i.e. from the years 1926–1930. The author attempts to prove and illustrate to what degree the influence of the Russian language was manifested in the lexis used by editors and journalists of the weekly, what elements of this influence remained between 1918–1939 after the long period of partition and the immense influence of Russian upon the Polish language. Additionally, the author examines whether the Russian influences gained support in the Polish language of former inhabitants of the Eastern Polish borderlands who later settled in free Warsaw or in the language of those of its inhabitants who spent part of their lives in Russia.

Observations on the Soviet Vocabulary in the Ethnic Polish Language and the Soviet Polish Language in the Interwar Period (Based on Trzaska-Evert-Michalski “Encyclopedic Dictionary of Foreign Words” and “Trybuna Radziecka,” 1927–1938)The paper discusses the Soviet vocabulary extracted from “Trybuna Radziecka”, a central Polish weekly published in Moscow in 1927–1938 and edited by Polish left‑wing intelligentsia, living in the USRR as political émigrés in this period as well as some Sovietisms included in the Encyclopedic Dictionary of Foreign Words, edited by S. Lam, published by Trzaska-Evert-Michalski in Warsaw in 1939. The author tries to demonstrate that the new realities of life and state power in the Soviet Union had immense influence on the Polish language in Russia in the interwar period, and especially on the language of “Trybuna Radziecka.” This weekly was imbued with Sovietisms. They were in common use of the Poles living in Soviet Russia in the interwar period. The Soviet vocabulary in Trzaska-Evert-Michalski dictionary represents two layers. The first one includes lexical items fully assimilated by the Polish language, e.g. kołchoz, komsomolec. The second one contains exotic words, used occasionally, e.g. ispołkom, krasnoarmiejec, otlicznik, piatiletka. Uwagi o sowietyzmach w polszczyźnie etnicznej i radzieckiej w dwudziestoleciu międzywojennym (na materiale Encyklopedycznego słownika wyrazów obcych. Pochodzenie wyrazów, wymowa, objaśnienia pojęć, skróty, przysłowia, cytaty Trzaski, Everta, Michalskiego i moskiewskiej „Trybuny Radzieckiej” z lat 1927–1938)W artykule omówiono słownictwo radzieckie zarejestrowane w Encyklopedycznym słowniku wyrazów obcych wydanym w 1939 r. w Warszawie przez Trzaskę, Everta, Michalskiego, pod redakcją S. Lama i jednocześnie odzwierciedlone w „Trybunie Radzieckiej”, która ukazywała się w Moskwie w latach 1927–1938. Sowietyzmy zamieszczone w słowniku Trzaski i in. można podzielić na dwie grupy. Pierwszą grupę stanowią wyrazy, które nigdy nie były w powszechnym użyciu w komunikacji językowej Polaków, mogły się pojawiać okazjonalnie w tekstach publicystycznych, zyskując odcień żartobliwy czy ironiczny. Zapożyczenia te nie są zasymilowane (np. ispołkom, krasnoarmiejec, otlicznik, piatiletka). Grupę drugą tworzą wyrazy będące jedynymi nazwami określonych desygnatów, niezbędnych do opisania socjalistycznej rzeczywistości w Rosji radzieckiej. Są one całkowicie przyswojone przez język polski (np. agitka, kołchoz, komsomolec). W odróżnieniu od polszczyzny ogólnej, w porewolucyjnej polszczyźnie radzieckiej wszystkie te jednostki występowały bez żadnych ograniczeń (często świadczy o tym ich duża frekwencja tekstowa oraz rejestracja w innych źródłach radzieckich).

Opis:

Bańkowski’s review of the first edition of Linde’s Dictionary (1807–1814) and the emendations and supplements introduced by the editors of the second edition of the work (1854–1860) was less than glowing (e.g. “clearly unfinished, prematurely printed”). These opinions need to be firmly rejected. Bańkowski’s nearly 330 statements inserted in the entries of his etymological dictionary contain mostly or at least partially valid observations concerning Linde’s Dictionary. Linde’s lexicographic work did, in fact, represent an important reading source for Mickiewicz. However, Bańkowski’s opinion that it had a decisive influence on the poet’s linguistic development cannot be corroborated.

Opis:

The aim of this paper is to present the semantic history of the verb zrodzić (się) in the Polish language against other names describing the act of giving birth or being born, most of which have a common root, e.g. rodzić (się), porodzić (się), narodzić (się), urodzić (się). It turns out that despite the fact that nowadays the discussed word is not a synonymous equivalent of either rodzić (się) or urodzić (się), it can still be found in the living speech in this meaning (e.g. zradzać potomstwo (to give birth to off spring)). Lexicographic sources document the characterised verb in one content only, cf. zrodzić ‘to originate something; to cause, create, induce’, zrodzić się ‘to be originated, to result, to arise from something; to come into being’ (e.g. konflikt, pomysł zrodził się (a conflict, idea was born); idea, inicjatywa zrodziła się (an idea, initiative was born)). The archaic content of the title verb fossilised in texts of prayers and in phraseology.

Opis:

Для составления Русско-польского словаря разговорной речи и общего сленга используются три параллельных корпуса литературных текстов: Национальный корпус русского языка, Польско-русский корпус Варшавского языка, а кроме того, рабочий корпус, в который входят тексты, не включенные в состав двух упомянутых корпусов. Анализируются четыре словарные единицы: 1. отморозок; 2. (уж) что-что, а…; 3. травить анекдоты; 4. тоже мне… . 
Do opracowania słownika używane są trzy korpusy równoległe: Narodowy Korpus Języka Rosyjskiego, Rosyjsko-polski korpus równoległy Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego  oraz korpus roboczy, w skład którego wchodzą teksty, które nie tworzą dwu wspomnianych korpusów. Przedmiotem uwagi są 4 hasła słownikowe (1. отморозок; 2. (уж) что-что, а …; 3. травить анекдоты и 4. тоже мне …).
Three bilingual corpora of literary texts are employed to compile  the dictionary (the Russian National Corpus, the Polish-Russian and Russian-Polish Corpus of  Warsaw University, and the Home Corpus). The latter covers texts which are not created by the two former corpora, but which will be cited in the proposed dictionary.  Four entries are given in detail (1 otmorozok; 2 (uzh) chto-chto, a …; 3 travit' anekdoty, and 4 tozhe mne …).

This article describes in detail the concept of A Slovak-Polish-Russian Dictionary of Linguistic Terms (Slovensko-poľsko-ruský slovník jazykovedných termínov), which was compiled by a team of authors from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Prešov. Three volumes of this translation-explanatory dictionary deal with the terminology of three linguistic levels: phonology, morphology and syntax, and they may be the starting point for other volumes. The paper outlines the state of Slovak-Polish-Russian translation lexicography with regard to linguistic sources, and evaluates the state of processing of Slovak, Polish and Russian linguistic terminology in the form of monolingual encyclopaedias and explanatory dictionaries. It also mentions reference sources the authors drew upon when compiling the dictionary. The article presents motivation for the compilation of a Slovak-Polish-Russian dictionary of linguistic terminology, pointing out the need for such a publication and identifying the spheres of its application.
Niniejszy artykuł szczegółowo opisuje koncepcję Słowacko-polsko-rosyjskiego słownika terminów językoznawczych (Slovensko-poľsko-ruský slovník jazykovedných termínov), opracowanego przez zespół autorów z Wydziału Filozoficznego Uniwersytetu Preszowskiego w Preszowie. Omawiany słownik ma charakter tłumaczeniowo-eksplikacyjny i składa się z trzech tomów, poświęconych terminologii badania języka na trzech poziomach: fonetyczno-fonologicznym, morfologicznym i składniowym. Mogą one stanowić punkt wyjścia dla kolejnych tomów. Artykuł przedstawia stan słowacko-polsko-rosyjskiej leksykografii tłumaczeniowej w odniesieniu do kompendiów językoznawczych oraz ocenia stan opracowania słowackiej, polskiej i rosyjskiej terminologii językoznawczej w formie jednojęzycznych leksykonów i słowników wyjaśniających. Omawia również źródła, z których korzystali autorzy podczas opracowywania słownika. Artykuł przedstawia także motywację dla opracowania słowacko-polsko-rosyjskiego słownika terminologii językoznawczej, wskazując na potrzebę takiej publikacji i obszary jej zastosowania.

The analysis comprises a stock of 414 Polish loanwords selected from the dictionary of Smolensk dialects. In the article the following problems are discussed: the stock of loanwords, periods and the process of the borrowing. Most of the words were borrowed as a result of direct language contacts. Some of the words were borrowed through Belarussian. The majority of them were borrowed in the 17th, 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century.

W niniejszym artykule autor proponuje semantyczną analizę konfrontatywną polskiego leksemu przeczytać oraz jego rosyjskich odpowiedników – прочитать i перечитать, a także zestawienie takiej analizy z odpowiednimi artykułami hasłowymi w wielkich słownikach polsko-rosyjskich i rosyjsko-polskich. Celem analizy jest określenie optymalnej sekwencji znaczeń leksemu przeczytać, odpowiedni dobór ekwiwalentów, a także systemowo adekwatna i pragmatycznie użyteczna konstrukcja artykułów hasłowych dla wszystkich trzech jednostek leksykalnych.
The article is devoted to a contrastive analysis of lexical (dictionary) meanings of the Polish lexeme przeczytać and its Russian equivalents прочитать and перечитать. The analysis also provides verification of its findings with the register of three major Polish-Russian dictionaries. The purpose of the analysis is to establish a correct sequence of meanings of the Polish lexeme along with appropriate translation counterparts, and to suggest how to create a system-readable and pragmatically useful structure of dictionary entries for all three lexemes.
