Opis:
Early traces of Psychosomatics in fiction and particularly in drama can be found in pathbreaking texts by Friedrich Schiller, Georg Büchner, and Arthur Schnitzler. These medical doctors pay close attention to the mind-body problem. They transfer their observations into poetry, creating world literature. As sons of doctors, they rebelled against their fathers as well as some of the dominant concepts of medicine and society. Friedrich Schiller. It were the plays about freedom: „Die Räuber“ (1782) „Don Carlos“ (1787) and „Wilhelm Tell“ (1804) which established Friedrich Schiller’s fame; Schiller, son of a surgeon (Wundarzt), studied medicine at the military academy in Stuttgart. Before the successful premiere of „Die Räuber” in Mannheim, the budding regimental doctor has drawn up three academic studies dealing with philosophic, physiologic, and psychosomatic issues. Georg Büchner. The playwriter and private lecturer Georg Büchner can be considered a precursor of Psychosomatics within scientific medicine. His father was a surgeon and the district doctor of Darmstadt. Georg Büchner’s fierce debates about the issue of the Biedermeier-attitude led him to become a revolutionary. His most important plays are „Dantons Tod“ (1835) and „Woyzeck“ (1836). Arthur Schnitzler. Towards the end of the 19th century, the doctor, dramatist, and storyteller Arthur Schnitzler who was the son of a laryngologist in Vienna linked Literature and Psychoanalysis to represent processes of the inner life. These efforts were based on his works about hypnotic and suggestive therapies of functional (psychogenic) disorders. He developed with Lieutenant Gustl (1900) und Fräulein Else (1924) the narrative form of the „internal monologue” for the German language. The article introduces 33 poets, doctors, rebels, for example, Francois de Rabelais and Johann Christian Günther, John Keats and Justinus Kerner, or Alfred Döblin and Rainald Götz. In the 20th century, poets and doctors like Harriet Straub, Charlotte Wolff and Hertha Nathorff, who were engaged in the women’s movement, joined them. These writers have a unique sensorium to perceive what might be significant for them as doctors and poets, what art and medicine are about, and what effects their lives because it affects them. Whichever observations and adventures they transform into literature: it is the medical work that provides experiences about life and pain.

Opis:
The article is based on the author’s personal and long-year experience gathered while observing and living the life in India. The text addresses the problems and struggles of elites of a society on the crossroads of various civilisations. In addition, it touches upon often contradictory visions of the world and social order, which does not prevent any of them from finding space to perfect specific aspects of spiritual life. In India, we can see very clearly how two planes and two levels of Indian culture – the philosophy of life and the art of life – cross and, at the same time, blend with each other. The most general aspect of these considerations results from the common essence that permeates Indian culture and skills of co-existence. Its contributions to global culture are: a unique view, cognition and evaluation of the world. It also added a more profound interest in mankind than in other cultures, supported by the intellectual effort to explore what conditions its being, and what can decondition that being. As a result of that interest, deepened throughout dozens of centuries, the Indian philosophy proposes a notion of the human being that is wider than in the European tradition. Moreover, it also advances methods and techniques of upbringing of the young generation so that it would manifest a conscious attitude to the tradition and art of life in the broadest meaning of the word, and be able to build a balance between the self – the microworld – and the macroworld in a peaceful and disciplined manner.

Positivist criticism

debate on positivist poetry
Opis:
Piotr Chmielowski, one of the most important literary critics and historians of the literature of the Positivist period, had an enormous role in shaping the opinion on the literary output of Aleksander Michaux (pen-name Miron). The critic contributed much to strengthen the negative image of the poet by discrediting his works using unfounded and groundless accusations of their non-original character, or by a selective choice of citations aimed to ridicule the author, among others. The accusations forwarded by Chmielowski, mainly those referring to the alleged anachronism or even Miron’s dislike of progress, were simplyichaux reflected well the universal resentment of Positivist critics towards contemporary poets and testified to a particular understanding of the goals of lyric poetry and the principles governing it. Any literary output that did not fulfill the requirements of utilitarianism was supposed to be shunned and removed beyond the mainstream of the Polish literature of the time. The conviction on low artistic merit of the poetic output of the Positivist period, formed as early as the latter half of the nineteenth century, has lingered among a sizeable number of modern readers of literature.

This paper highlights the way in which some Latin American women poets from different decades of the twentieth century, and from different countries, approached the territory of desire and pleasure, at times vindicating it by revealing how patriarchal culture denied them their expression, both in life as in literature, at other times, simply and decisively, proclaiming it without any kind of restriction. To this goal, significant examples of poetic approaches, emphases, and different tones are provided throughout the article.

Opis:
The present sketch discusses two poems written by R. Creeley, a poet initially associated with the Black Mountain College group, who later worked out his own idiosyncratic style, often referred to as minimalistic. Focusing on the two poems of the poet, one early poem and the other written towards the end of the poet’s life, the author of the article attempts to show how Creeley’s poetical technique, being remarkably disciplined and innerly organized variety of free verse, became his answer to the problem of contingency. Contingency, i.e. a lack of metaphysical protection, forms now the basic element of the poet in the democratic world. To facilitate this new modern understanding of the relationships between poetry and democracy, the author juxtaposes Creeley with Whitman in an attempt to outline post-religious spirituality close at hand for the poet who has no illusions as to human condition and who, at the same time, retains his creative power and drive that Creeley inherits from Whitman and Emerson.

Opis:
This essay contextualises Shakespeare as product of a field of forces encapsulating national identity and relative cultural status. It begins by historicising the production of national poets in Romantic and Nationalist terms. Lefevere’s conceptual grid is then used to characterise the system that underpins the production of Shakespeare as British national poet, and his place within the canon of world literature. The article defines this context first before moving onto the figure of Shakespeare, by referring to various high status texts such as the Kalevala, the Aeneid, The Faerie Queene and Paradise Lost. The position accorded Shakespeare at the apex is therefore contingent upon a series of prior operations on other texts, and their writers. Shakespeare is not conceived as attaining pre-eminence because of his own innate literary qualities. Rather, a process of elimination occurs by which the common ascription of the position of national poet to a writer of epic is shown to be a cultural impossibility for the British. Instead, via Aristotle’s privileging of tragedy over epic, the rise of Shakespeare is seen as almost a second choice because of the inappropriateness of Spenser and Milton for the position.

Opis:
The article presents linguistic phenomena from the initial stage of the poet’s work when the modernist writing model prevailed. Leopold Staff wrote a reflexive and descriptive triptych in which, by resorting to a juxtaposition to the Young Poland movement poetry, he created paradise landscapes of a deserted island surrounded by sea water, drowned in light and colour. In order to recreate the protagonist’s dreams he resorted to poetic imagery at various levels of text organization. The linguistic phenomena in the realm of syntactic forms refer to the functions of exclamations, hypotaxis and parataxis, the role of arrangements of conjugation rows, the rhythm of verses combined in a hendecasyllable with ABBA rhymes. The following figures of speech were used: antithesis, rhetoric questions, inversions, apostrophes etc. As for semantic transformations, an important role was played by sensual and mental metaphors, semantic poetism, personification and comparisons. The lexical phenomena were related to applying the style-related function of vocabulary that is chronologically diverse (artistic neologisms, neo-semantisms, old-fashioned words); geographically diverse (dialects) and word-formation diverse (derivatives of adpositional phrases in order to condense the text to hendecasyllable verses).
