Opis:
This article points at some (strictly) mathematical methods, which often tend to display not fully conscious treatment of mathematical reality as given, existing and already-present-there. This attitude is prequisite for mathematical research (including set theory), and not merely apsychological add-on, and the methods can be best described as „platonism as method ofenquiry in mathematics” (pl.Metod.) and „platonism as mode of existence of infinity” (pl.Niesk.). Thus, platonism becomes one of the problems internal to mathematics. Identifying pl.Metod. and pl.Niesk. as such, being described here with respect to set theory, is only astarting point in the process of grasping and explaining platonism. This requires phenomenological hermeneutics of mathematics to be conceived (cf. [Z. K.]).

Abstract mathematical formulae are our “mother tongue”, thanks to which we are able to develop a creative dialogue with our physical environment. The application of the language of mathematics gives us access to valuable information about events which occurred billions years ago and so allows us to reconstruct the history of the universe. This amazing property of nature inspires a non-trivial philosophical question: Why are there the mathematically described universal laws of physics at all, when nature could have been only an uncoordinated disorder? The existence of the universal laws of nature seems to constitute the essence of the ontological structure of the world. Various authors call this basic field of formal structures – the matrix of the universe, the field of rationality, the formal field, the Logos, the Absolute, etc. Jan Łukasiewicz, the well-known representative of the Polish School of Logic, argued that the reality of ideal mathematical structures independent of human experience could be regarded as an expression of God’s presence in nature. Regardless of our terminological preferences, this structure can be regarded as a basic level of physical reality where the necessitarian interpretation of the laws of nature is confirmed and the astonishing effectiveness of mathematics could be explained.

The purpose of this comparison is to show the relationship of the works under study with the broad philosophical and literary tradition of the sixteenth century. It also seeks to answer the question about the function played by music and musical education in the image of a perfect courtier.

Opis:
Inasmuch as mathematical platonism can be clearly matched with the radical realism, there exists a possibility to point out an approach, promoted by a French physicist, Roland Omnés, that is equivalent to the Aristotelian position of moderate realism. This standpoint denies the existence of an independent universum of mathematical entities and claims that mathematics is encoded in the laws of physics. In analogy to logicism, where mathematics is considered to be reducible to logic, Omnés' position is called by him 'physism' to stress the reducibility of mathematics to the laws of physics. The goal of Roland Omnés is to construct a common philosophy of mathematics and physics where the realities of these two disciplines converge. The first part of the analysis aims at the description and critical evaluation of physism from the point of view of the adequacy of the consistent histories interpretation of quantum mechanics to provide physical basis of the abstraction of the mathematical structures from the physical reality.

Opis:
In this article Whitehead’s philosophy of mathematics is characterized as a Structural Second-Order Platonism and it is demonstrated that the Whiteheadian ontology is consistent with modern formal approaches to the foundation of mathematics. We follow the pathway taken by model-theoretically and semantically oriented philosophers. Consequently, it is supposed that all mathematical theories (understood as deductively closed set of sentences) determine their own models. These models exist mind-independently in the realm of eternal objects. From the metatheoretical point of view the hypothesis (posed by Józef Życiński) of the Rationality Field is explored. It is indicated that relationships between different models can be described in the language of modal logics and can further be axiomatized in the framework of the Second Order Set Theory. In conclusion, it is asserted that if any model (of a mathematical theory) is understood, in agreement with Whitehead’s philosophy, as a collection of eternal objects, which can be simultaneously realized in a single actual occasion, then our external world is governed by the hidden pattern encoded in the field of pure potentialities which constitute the above mentioned Field of Rationality. Therefore, this work can be regarded as the first step towards building a Logic of Rationality.

The article analyzes Rozmyślania sandomierskie (Sandomierz Meditations) by Kasper Drużbicki, a 17th century Jesuit. The text, which was probably read out during a monastic retreat, borders on homiletics and mystical writing. The author of the present article interprets it through the prism of strongly marked elements of Platonic and Neoplatonic tradition and tries to reconstruct the spiritual, philosophical and linguistic phenomena occurring at the interface of the physical and metaphysical spheres, among others the way symbols function, the shaping of the semantics of words, instability of the category of time, mutual permeation and complementation of the fields of esthetics and anesthetics. There are numerous references to philosophical writings and contemporary contexts within the theory of literature but their purpose is not so much to bring out factographical or historical dependencies or the existence of conscious intertextual references but rather to provide a detailed and multifaceted depiction of the main themes of Drużbicki’s work also in an attempt to elicit on these grounds certain general regularities in the history of human thought and religion.

Analysis of the mutual relations between the main intellectual and spiritual authority of the Plato Academy – Marsilio Ficino on the one hand, and Girolamo Savonarola, whose activity was a reaction to the secularization of the Medicean times on the other, and a thorough study of their argument that turned into a ruthless struggle, are possible on the basis of selected sources and studies of the subject. The most significant are the following: Savonarola, Prediche e scritti; Guida Spirituale – Vita Christiana; Apologetico: indole e natura dell’arte poetica; De contempt mundi as well as Ficino’s letters and Apologia contra Savonarolam; and also Giovanni Pica della Mirandoli’s De hominis dignitate. The two adversaries’ mutual relations assumed the shape of surprising similarities and contradictions. They both came from the families of court doctors, which gave them access to broad knowledge of man’s nature that was available to doctors at those times, and let them grow up in the circles of sophisticated Renaissance elites. Ficino lived in the Medici’s residences in Florence, and Savonarola in the palace belonging to the Este family in Ferrara. Ficino eagerly used the benefits of such a situation, whereas Savonarola became an implacable enemy of the oligarchy that limited the citizens’ freedom they had at that time, and a determined supporter of the republic, to whose revival in Florence he contributed a lot. This situated them in political camps that opposed each other. They were similarly educated and had broad intellectual horizons. They left impressive works of literature concerned with the domain of spirituality, philosophy, religion, literature and arts, and their texts contain fewer contradictions than it could be supposed. Being priests they aimed at defending the Christian religion. Ficino wanted to reconcile the religious doctrine with the world of ancient philosophy and in order to do this he did gigantic work to make a translation of Plato’s works. He wanted to fish souls in the intellectual net of Plato’s philosophy and to convert them. And it is here that they differed from each other. Savonarola’s attitude towards the antiquity was hostile; he struggled for the purity of the Christian doctrine and for the simplicity of its followers’ lives. He called upon people to repent and convert. He first of all noticed an urgent need to deeply reform the Chuch, which led him to an immediate conflict with Pope Alexander VI Borgia. In accordance with the spirit of the epoch he was interested in astrology and he cast accurate horoscopes. Savonarola rejected astrology, and he believed that God, like in the past, sends prophets to the believers. His sermons, that had an immense impact on the listeners, were based on prophetic visions, especially ones concerning the future of Florence, Italy and the Church. His moral authority and his predictions that came true, were one of the reasons why his influence increased so much that after the fall of the House of Medici he could be considered an informal head of the Republic of Florence. It was then that he carried out the strict reforms, whose part were the famous „Bonfires of the Vanities”. Seemingly Ficino passively observed the preacher’s work. Nevertheless over the years a conflict arose between the two great personalities. It had the character of a political struggle. It was accompanied by a rivalry for intellectual and spiritual influence, as well as by a deepening mutual hostility. Ficino expressed it in Apologia contra Savonarolam written soon after Savonarola’s tragic death; the monk was executed according to Alexander VI Borgia’s judgment. The sensible neo-Platonist had no hesitation in thanking the Pope for liberating Florence from Savonarola’s influence and he called his opponent a demon and the Antichrist deceiving the believers. How deep must the conflict have been since it led Ficino to formulating his thoughts in this way, and how must it have divided Florence’s community? The dispute between the leading moralizers of those times must have caused anxiety in their contemporaries. Both the antagonists died within a year, one after the other, and their ideas had impact even long after their deaths, finding their reflection in the next century’s thought and arts.

A considerable number of Andrew Marvell’s poems contain reference to various forms of visual arts. Marvell’s use of this type of imagery frequently leads to some type of transformation of a psychological, spiritual, political or social reality, with more or less overt allusions to the Neoplatonic notions of sublimation. However, this predominantly Neoplatonic notion of art, characteristic of Marvell’s earlier lyrics, disappears from his Restoration poems. In the satires, art, instead of idealising and elevating the corporeal, is rather dragged into the sphere of matter, where, together with the objects of the poet’s mockery, it undergoes a carnivalesque deformation. Such a degradation or carnivalisation of art imagery in Marvell’s Restoration satires is not only generically conditioned, but has its roots in the political, social and philosophical legacy of the Republic.

This paper constitutes an endeavor to present the thought of dr Henry More, a seventeenth century English philosopher and theologian, who is regarded as one of the so-called Cambridge Platonists. Historians usually consider thinkers such as Descartes, Hobbes and Spinoza as their adversaries, but it is only partially true in relation to Henry More because in his early years he was a follower of Descartes. More perceived him as a committed defender of faith and spirituality; eventually Descartes argued in favor of God’s existence and defended the immortality of the soul as well. However, a few years after Descartes’ death, More realised that the main framework of his philosophy (in particular his doctrine of the soul as a thinking thing and his explanation of natural motions in mechanical terms) was overwhelmed with errors and inaccuracies, which led to materialism, ontic accidentalism and moral relativism, and thus made a loophole to atheism and nihilism. This article illustrates both episodes in More’s life, but it also focuses on the variety of his representative conceptions. These include: his strongly non-orthodox belief in reincarnation and universal salvation influenced by the work of Plotinus and Origen; a conception of The Spirit of Nature (similar to the Platonic conception of World Soul); evidence of the existence of God; a conception of infinite space, which might have been an influence on Isaac Newton. Finally, the article deals with relations between More and his students (especially Anne Conway) and Christian Kabbalists. By describing all these aspects of More’s philosophical journey, the author of this work wishes to show his thought as an original and eclectic marriage of influences, which can be an interesting study in itself, but the author’s aim is also to draw the reader’s attention to several problems which make the designation of More as a “Platonist sensu stricto” very controversial.

Marcellus Palingenius Stellatus’ Zodiacus vitae was one of the biggest editorial sensations of the sixteenth century, despite which its popularity in the Renaissance has not yet been the subject of a comprehensive study. The aim of this article is to partially fill that gap by addressing the circulation of the work in sixteenth-century Poland, where the first adaptation of the text into a language other than Latin was produced by the poet Mikołaj Rej. Indeed, several other illustrious exponents of Polish Renaissance culture were also interested in the Zodiacus and we can find references to it in both poetic works and in philosophical treatises. The particular political and social organisation of Poland at the time, and its intensive contacts with Italian and German universities, make it an excellent field of investigation for an understanding of the impact of the Zodiacus between the end of the sixteenth century and the beginning of the seventeenth.

Opis:
Educated most probably in Paris, Wincenty, or Master Vincentius, called Kadłubek (d. 1223), was a lawyer, advisor to Duke Casimir II the Just (Kazimierz Sprawiedliwy) and, subsequently, bishop of Cracow. His chronicle, compiled on Casimir’s commission before 1207–8, is a decent representative of the twelfth-century renaissance. Firstly, we established the algorithm for the numerical comparison of the Chronicle and his supposed source; secondly, we took into account some of the writings of the Greek and Roman philosophers taught in the schools of 12th century and known by writers of the same period. The essay seeks to identify crypto-quotes in Wincenty’s chronicle, where a considerable number of unlabeled opinions by other authors – philosophers, poets, and so on – are potentially traceable. We furthermore aimed at reconstructing the list of books used by the chronicler as a source or reference material. We have assumed, as a principle, that a single citation from one work would not legitimize the statement that the chronicler knew directly that source. With two or three quotations from one work, we seek to establish the reasons why these quotations are in the Chronicle. The results obtained have significantly enlarged the number of (hitherto-known) quotes from Plato’s Timaeus (in Calcidius’s translation), Rhetorica ad Herennium, Seneca’s Moral Letters, and Boethius’s De consolatione philosophiae. In this context, we have taken into account, for the first time, the logical texts by Aristotle and Boethius, discovering in Vincentius’s chronicle traces of the reading of the Topics and On Sophistical Refutations (by the former author) and of De topicis differentiis (by the latter). After a thorough comparison with all the works of Cicero and a critical analysis of the quotations accepted by our predecessors, we retained only one source: the De senectute. We have also excluded the possible evidence of Kadłubek’s knowledge of Macrobius. Our contribution is of philological nature as it seeks to determine the relation and dependencies between Historia Polonica and its philosophical sources. We discuss the nature of these relationships and their philosophical character in other studies. The present essay forms, we believe, a convenient point of departure for further research on philosophical aspects of Wincenty’s output and on the reception of philosophy in Poland in the late twelfth and early thirteenth century.
