Opis:
Statistical relationships between the quantum yield of photosynthesis Φ and selected environmental factors in the Baltic have been established on the basis of a large quantity of empirical data. The model formula is the product of the theoretical maximum quantum yield ΦMAX =0.125 atomC quantum−1 and five dimensionless factors fi taking values from 0 do 1: Φ = ΦMAXfa fΔ fc(Ca(0)) fc(PARinh) fE, t. To a sufficiently good approximation, each of these factors fi appears to be dependent on one or at most two environmental factors, such as temperature, underwater irradiance, surface concentration of chlorophyll a, absorption properties of phytoplankton and optical depth. These dependences have been determined for Baltic Case 2 waters. The quantum yield Φ, calculated from known values of these environmental factors, is then applicable in the model algorithm for the remote sensing of Baltic primary production. The statistical error of the approximate quantum yields Φ is 62%.

Opis:
In this work we have studied the possibility of determining the rate of phytoplankton photosynthesis in situ using a submersible pump-and-probe fluorometer in water areas differing in their trophic level, as well as in climatic and hydrophysical characteristics. A biophysical model was used to describe the relationship between photosynthesis, underwater irradiance, and the intensity of phytoplankton fluorescence excited by an artificial light source. Fluorescence intensity was used as a measure of light absorption by phytoplankton and for assessing the efficiency of photochemical energy conversion at photosynthetic reaction centers. Parameters of the model that could not be measured experimentally were determined by calibrating fluorescence and irradiance data against the primary production measured in the Baltic Sea with the radioactive carbon method. It was shown that the standard deviation of these parameters in situ did not exceed 20%, and the use of their mean values to estimate the phytoplankton photosynthetic rate showed a good correlation between the calculated and measured data on primary production in the Baltic (r = 0.89), Norwegian (r = 0.77) and South China (r = 0.76) Seas.

Opis:
Evergreen plants are an important component of many ecosystems of the world and occur in numerous evolutionary lineages. In this article we review phenotypic traits of evergreen woody angiosperms occurring in habitats that regularly experience frost. Leaf anatomical traits such as sclerenchymatic tissues or prominent cuticles ensure mechanical strength while often enhancing tolerance of water deficit. The low ratio of photosynthetic to nonphotosynthetic tissues as well as modified cell wall structure and nitrogen allocation patterns in evergreen leaves result in lower mass-based photosynthetic rate and photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency in comparison with deciduous leaves. Their photosynthetic apparatus is adapted for the survival of frost in a down-regulated state with potential for photosynthetic activity in winter during periods of permissive temperatures. Leaf structure interacts with the mechanisms of frost survival. Stem xylem in evergreen plants tends to contain smaller diameter conduits incurring greater resistance to freeze/ thaw induced cavitation than in deciduous plants, although at the cost of reduced hydraulic efficiency. In contrast, no such differences in hydraulic conductivity have been documented at the leaf level. There is evidence for reduced structural plasticity of evergreen leaves in response to variability in irradiance, however photosynthetic downregulation occurs in mature leaves in response to self shading. Some evergreen species exhibit slow leaf development and “delayed greening”, while in many species aging is also a very protracted process. Finally, evergreen leaves may participate in carbohydrate and, less obviously, in nitrogen storage for the support of spring shoot and foliage growth, although the importance of this function is under debate. In conclusion, the evergreen leaf habit is correlated with numerous structural and functional traits at the leaf and also at the stem level. These correlations may generate trade-offs that shape the ecological strategies of evergreen plants.

The use of hydracoustical techniques to classify benthic fauna and flora is one of the important challenges in present marine research. It is crucial to understand the microphytobenthos photosynthesis impact on the backscattering properties of the sea floor in the Baltic Sea, where the techniques are actively developed now. This motivated our study. The data used in the analysis was collected in the multiday laboratory experiment conducted in the frame of the grant of the National Science Centre, Poland (No. N306 773940). In this experiment, during changing light conditions (light/dark photocycles), the hydroacoustical backscattering data was acquired in the aquarium with a sandy bottom. The constant temperature and salinity conditions, typical for the Southern Baltic, were kept, and oxygen content was monitored. In this paper data collected at 280 kHz, was processed. It was studied how the energy of echo and power spectral density of the echo signal, are sensitive to the microphytobenthos photosynthesis.

In the present investigation, a comparative study was made on the effect of exogenous addition of sodium chloride on net leaf photosynthesis (CO2 uptake) in Aegiceras corniculatum (L.) Blanco, a dicotyledonous mangrove species. The net leaf photosynthesis of A. corniculatum was modified in the presence of sodium chloride, it may be called a preferential halophyte. Salinity is one of the most significant environmental challenges also abiotic constraints limiting plant productivity. A. corniculatum could tolerate up to 800 mM sodium chloride concentrations. The net leaf photosynthesis rate was increased with increasing NaCl salinity up to 400 mM. This concentration was found to be the optimum salinity level for this species. In conclusion, it may be inferred that sodium chloride promoted the photosynthesis concentrations upto optimum level of 400 mM in Aegiceras corniculatum (L.) Blanco. beyond 400 mM NaCl decreased the CO2 uptake. The maximum photosynthetic obtained at 400 mM NaCl on the l20th day.

Drought is regarded as one of the environmental constraints threatening agriculture worldwide. Melatonin is a pleiotropic molecule prevalent in plants capable of promoting plant endogenous resilience to many environmental challenges including drought. Banana is an important staple food consumed in developing countries especially in Africa. In this research, we studied the role of melatonin in the growth of bananas subjected to drought under the Egyptian semi-arid conditions. To achieve this objective, a field experiment on banana (Musa spp., cv. Williams) mother plants and first ratoon was conducted on a private farm for two seasons - 2019 and 2020. Three irrigation treatments, 100, 90 and 80% irrigation water requirements (IWR) were used in conjunction with four concentrations of melatonin as a foliar spray (0 μmol, 40 μmol, 60 μmol, and 80 μmol) to determine the effect of both treatments on banana plant performance under drought. The results showed that there was a substantial difference between treatments, with the foliar application of melatonin at 80 μmol concentration improving most of the yield attributes, relative water content, total chlorophyll and proline with water deficit. However, the foliar application of the molecule lowered the biochemical characteristics mostly at 80% IWR under the Egyptian semi-arid conditions. Overall, there was a concentration-dependent response with regards to IWR for the two seasons 2019 and 2020.

Opis:
The understanding the influence of biological processes on the characteristics of the signals backscattered by the sea floor is crucial in the development of the hydroacoustical benthic habitat classification techniques. The impact of the microphytobenthos photosynthesis on the acoustical backscattering properties of the Atlantic sandy sediments was previously demonstrated by Holliday et al. (2004) and Wildman and Huettel (2012). To account for the sensitivity of the hydroacoustical classification techniques to the backscattering properties of local marine sediments, it is important to understand the microphytobenthos photosynthesis impact for the Baltic Sea where the techniques are being actively developed now. This is the main motivation of the paper. In the paper the influence of the microphytobenthos photosynthesis on the characteristics of the echo signals reflected by sandy sediments in the typical Baltic temperature and the salinity conditions is discussed. The interdisciplinary multiday laboratory experiment was conducted to study the impact of benthic microalgal photosynthesis on the characteristics of the echo signal reflected by sandy sediments. Hydroacoustical data were collected under controlled constant light, temperature and salinity conditions. The oxygen content at different levels of the water column was simultaneously monitored.

Mitigation of man-made climate change, rapid depletion of readily available fossil fuel reserves and facing the growing energy demand that faces mankind in the near future drive the rapid development of economically viable, renewable energy production technologies. It is very likely that greenhouse gas emissions will lead to the significant climate change over the next fifty years. World energy consumption has doubled over the last twenty-five years, and is expected to double again in the next quarter of the 21st century. Our biosphere is at the verge of a severe energy crisis that can no longer be overlooked. Solar radiation represents the most abundant source of clean, renewable energy that is readily available for conversion to solar fuels. Developing clean technologies that utilize practically inexhaustible solar energy that reaches our planet and convert it into the high energy density solar fuels provides an attractive solution to resolving the global energy crisis that mankind faces in the not too distant future. Nature’s oxygenic photosynthesis is the most fundamental process that has sustained life on Earth for more than 3.5 billion years through conversion of solar energy into energy of chemical bonds captured in biomass, food and fossil fuels. It is this process that has led to evolution of various forms of life as we know them today. Recent advances in imitating the natural process of photosynthesis by developing biohybrid and synthetic “artificial leaves” capable of solar energy conversion into clean fuels and other high value products, as well as advances in the mechanistic and structural aspects of the natural solar energy converters, photosystem I and photosystem II, allow to address the main challenges: how to maximize solar-to-fuel conversion efficiency, and most importantly: how to store the energy efficiently and use it without significant losses. Last but not least, the question of how to make the process of solar energy conversion into fuel not only efficient but also cost effective, therefore attractive to the consumer, should be properly addressed.

The natural environment is being drastically affected by climate change. Under these severe environmental conditions, the growth and productivity of agricultural crops have reduced. Due to unpredictable rainfall, crops growing in the field are often exposed to waterlogging. This leads to significant crop damage and production losses. In this review paper, the morphological and physiological adaptations such as development of aerenchyma, adventitious roots, radial root oxygen loss barrier, and changes in chlorophyll fluorescence parameters of crops under waterlogging are discussed. This will help to understand the effects of waterlogging on various crops and their adaptation that promotes crop growth and productivity. To meet the food requirements of a growing population, the development of waterlogging tolerant crops by screening and plant breeding methods is necessary for plant breeders. Better knowledge of physiological mechanisms in response to waterlogging will facilitate the development of techniques and methods to improve tolerance in crops.

Picocyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. is very important but still poorly understood component of marine and freshwater ecosystems. In this study, the effect of single and multiple addition of cell-free filtrate obtained from Synechococcus sp. on selected cyanobacteria Synechocystis sp., Geitlerinema amphibium, Nodularia spumigena and Nostoc sp. was investigated. The species present in this work are groups of aquatic phototrophs known to co-occur in the Baltic Sea. The study showed that the picocyanobacterial cell-free filtrate inhibit the growth and changed the cell morphology of filamentous cyanobacteria G. amphibium, N. spumigena and Nostoc sp. It was shown that the addition of cell-free filtrate caused a decline of pigmentation and cell lysis of G. amphibium, N. spumigena and Nostoc sp. compared to the control culture. In addition, it was observed that the filtrate obtained from Synechococcus sp. did not affect the Synechocystis sp. It was found that the filtrate obtained from picocyanobacterium had the strongest effect on growth of G. amphibium, therefore for this cyanobacteria performed additional experiments to showed whether the filtrate affected also photosynthetic pigments, chlorophyll fluorescence and photosynthesis. The study proved that the picocyanobacterial allelopathic compounds reduce the efficiency of photosynthesis, which results in the inhibition of growth of target organisms. This way of interaction may explain the formation of almost monospecific cyanobacterial blooms in many aquatic ecosystems, including in the Baltic Sea.

Desiccation tolerance, the ability to lose virtually all of its free intracellular water and then restore normal function when rehydrated, is one of the most remarkable features of bryophytes. The aim of the study was to determine the resistance of two species of Plagiomnium undulatum (Hedw.) T.J.Kop. and Polytrichum commune Hedw. on drying to 50% relative water content of the air and rehydration. Changes in the intensity of photosynthesis and respiration as well as the content of malate and citrate in leafy moss stems were analysed. P. commune gametophores showed greater resistance to drought stress than P. undulatum. In both species, photosynthesis was much more sensitive to drought than respiration. Changes in the content of malate and citrate indicated a high plasticity of moss metabolism in conditions of water shortage and may be one of many important elements of the adaptation strategy to water deficit. The reactions of the tested mosses to dehydration and rehydration confirmed their adaptation to specific land conditions.

Half of the pots of each group were sprayed with 0.1% solution of Asahi SL (the third and fourth groups). The intensity of photosynthe- sis and transpiration, chlorophyll fluorescence, the content of UV-absorbing compounds and radical scavenging activity were measured using DPPH after four and six weeks of UV-B radiation. After six weeks of irradiation with a higher UV-B dose both flavonoid content and antioxidant activity increased by 112% and by 44%, respectively, compared to the plants grown at the lower dose. The plants treated with Asahi SL and exposed to the high dose of UV-B had the content of flavonoids 80% higher than the control ones. Asahi SL decreased scavenging activity in both groups of plants by 17% and 32%, respectively, in comparison with the untreated plants. The intensity of net photosynthesis, the transpiration rate and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters (Fv/Fo, ETR, Rfd) did not differ in most of variants.

e adaptability of plants to drought not only includes their ability to resist drought stress, but also their ability to recover aer stress is relieved. In this study, a weighting method was used to control the soil water content to produce a soil water stress gradient. e effects of drought and rewatering on the changes in osmotic adjustment substance content, antioxidant enzyme activity, and photosynthetic characteristics of potted Dicranostigma henanensis seedlings were measured on Day 28 aer the imposition of watering treatments and Day 7 aer rewatering. During the drought stress process, the relative electrical conductivity, thiobarbituric acid, water use efficiency, and proline content displayed a continuously increasing trend. Further, the net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate constantly decreased, while the chlorophyll content first increased and then decreased. Aer rehydration, superoxide dismutase (EC 1.15.1.1) activity and photosynthetic parameters quickly recovered to the CK level (soil moisture is 75%–80% of the maximum water holding capacity in the field), indicating that D. henanensis plants have a strong ability to repair the damage caused by drought stress. In particular, the photosynthetic machinery may have sophisticated regulation and repair mechanisms, which may be associated with its stable photosystem. Collectively, our findings demonstrate that the D. henanensis plant has a strong ability to adapt to arid environments, and therefore could be an excellent ornamental flower for landscaping in arid and semiarid areas.

Opis:
The redox status of the cell is described by the ratio of reduced to non-reduced compounds. Redox reactions which determine the redox state are an essential feature of all living beings on Earth. However, the first life forms evolved under strongly anoxic conditions of the young Earth, and the redox status probably was based on iron and sulphur compounds. Nowadays, redox reactions in cells have developed in strict connection to molecular oxygen and its derivatives i.e. reactive oxygen species (ROS). Oxygen has started to accumulate on the Earth due to oxygenic photosynthesis. All aspects of aerobic life involve ROS, reactive nitrogen species (RNS), antioxidants and redox regulation. Many different redox-active compounds are involved in the complex of redox processes, including pyridine nucleotides, thioredoxins, glutaredoxins and other thiol/disulphide-containing proteins. Redox regulation is integrated with the redox-reactions in photosynthesis and respiration to achieve an overall energy balance and to maintain a reduced state necessary for the biosynthetic pathways that are reductive in nature. It underlies the physiological and developmental flexibility in plant response to environmental signals.

Opis:
Since plant responses to selenium nanoparticles (nSe) had not been clarified, this study was carried out to evaluate the effects of nSe (10 and 100 μM) on photosynthesis performance, ion homeostasis, antioxidant system, and phenylpropanoids in strawberry exposed to salt stress. Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectroscopy analyses indicated that foliar-applied nSe can be taken up by leaves and trans-located to roots. Salinity led to an increase in Na concentration and reductions in Ca and K contents which were relieved by the nSe applications. Moreover, the nSe treatment at 10 μM alleviated the NaCl-induced lesion to PSII functioning, contributing to improvement in water-splitting complex (Fv /Fo ) under salinity. The exposure to nSe at a concentration of 100 μM exhibited a moderate stress, determined by the increases in hydrogen peroxide (H 2O2) and lipid peroxidation rate (membrane integrity index). The nSe10 treatment increased catalase activity and phenylpropanoid derivatives contents (salicylic acid, catechin, and caffeic acid) and decreased the content of oxidants under salinity condition. Consequently, nSe utilization at a suitable dose can be an effective method to alleviate signs of salt stress via improvements in photosynthesis, ion hemostasis, photosynthesis performance, salicylic acid (a vital signaling defensive hormone), and antioxidant machinery.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of Selenium (Se) supply (0, 3, 6, 12, 24 mg kg−1) on the growth, photosynthetic characteristics, Se accumulation and distribution of flue-cured tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.). Results showed that low-dose Se treatments (≤6 mg kg−1) stimulated plant growth but high-dose Se treatments (≥12 mg kg−1) hindered plant growth. Optimal Se dose (6 mg kg−1) stimulated plant growth by reducing MDA content and improving photosynthetic capability. However, excess Se (24 mg kg−1) increased MDA content by 28%, decreased net photosynthetic rate and carboxylation efficiency by 34% and 39%, respectively. The Se concentration in the roots, stems, and leaves of the tobacco plants significantly increased with increasing Se application. A linear correlation (R = 0.95, P < 0.01) was observed between Se level and tobacco plant tissue Se concentration. This correlation indicated that the tobacco plant tissues were not saturated within the concentration range tested. The pattern of total Se concentration in the tobacco plant tissues followed the order root > leaf > stem. The Se concentration in the roots was 3.17 and 7.57 times higher than that in the leaves and stems, respectively, after treatment with 24 mg kg−1 Se. In conclusion, the present study suggested that optimal Se dose (6 mg kg−1) improved the plant growth mainly by enhancing photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, carboxylation efficiency and Rubisco content in the flue-cured tobacco leaves. However, the inhibition of excess Se on tobacco growth might be due to high accumulation of Se in roots and the damage of photosynthesis in leaves.

Eukaryotes acquired the ability to process photosynthesis by engulfing a cyanobacterium and transforming it into a genuine organelle called the plastid. This event, named primary endosymbiosis, occurred once more than a billion years ago, and allowed the emergence of the Archaeplastida, a monophyletic supergroup comprising the green algae and plants, the red algae and the glaucophytes. Of the other known cases of symbiosis between cyanobacteria and eukaryotes, none has achieved a comparable level of cell integration nor reached the same evolutionary and ecological success than primary endosymbiosis did. Reasons for this unique accomplishment are still unknown and difficult to comprehend. The exploration of plant genomes has revealed a considerable amount of genes closely related to homologs of Chlamydiae bacteria, and probably acquired by horizontal gene transfer. Several studies have proposed that these transferred genes, which are mostly involved in the functioning of the plastid, may have helped the settlement of primary endosymbiosis. Some of these studies propose that Chlamydiae and cyanobacterial symbionts coexisted in the eukaryotic host of the primary endosymbiosis, and that Chlamydiae provided solutions for the metabolic symbiosis between the cyanobacterium and the host, ensuring the success of primary endosymbiosis. In this review, I present a reevaluation of the contribution of Chlamydiae genes to the genome of Archaeplastida and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of this tripartite model for primary endosymbiosis.

Opis:
Global agriculture is a pivotal activity performed by various communities worldwide to produce essential human food needs. Plant productivity is limited by several factors, such as salinity, water scarcity, and heat stress. Salinity significantly causes short or long-term impacts on the plant photosynthesis mechanisms by reducing the photosynthetic rate of CO2 assimilation and limiting the stomatal conductance. Moreover, disturbing the plant water status imbalance causes plant growth inhibition. Up-regulation of several plant phytohormones occurs in response to increasing soil salt concentration. In addition, there are different physiological and biochemical mechanisms of salt tolerance, including ion transport, uptake, homeostasis, synthesis of antioxidant enzymes, and osmoprotectants. Besides that, microorganisms proved their ability to increase plant tolerance, Bacillus spp. represents the dominant bacteria of the rhizosphere zone, characterised as harmless microbes with extraordinary abilities to synthesise many chemical compounds to support plants in confronting salinity stress. In addition, applying arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) is a promising method to decrease salinity-induced plant damage as it could enhance the growth rate relative to water content. In addition, there is a demand to search for new salt-tolerant crops with more yield and adaptation to unfavourable environmental conditions. The negative impact of salinity on plant growth and productivity, photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, and changes in plant phytohormones biosynthesis, including abscisic acid and salicylic acid, jasmonic acid, ethylene, cytokinins, gibberellins, and brassinosteroids was discussed in this review. The mechanisms evolved to adapt and/or survive the plants, including ion homeostasis, antioxidants, and osmoprotectants biosynthesis, and the microbial mitigate salt stress. In addition, there are modern approaches to apply innovative methods to modify plants to tolerate salinity, especially in the essential crops producing probable yield with a notable result for further optimisation and investigations.

The study presents scientific substantiation and determination of the dependence of leaf area formation and photosynthetic activity of sunflower plants under the influence of fertilizers and growth regulators. The field research was conducted in 2015-2017 in the fields of the Voznesensk district in the Mykolaiv region, Ukraine (GPS: 47.630518, 32.078974). The soil of the research field is common black soil with little humus accumulation and the content of hydrolyzed nitrogen – 1.5-1.8; the content of highly absorbable phosphorous – 4.5-7.0 and the content of exchangeable potassium – 12-15 mg/100 g of soil. The research was carried out by a two-factor scheme, where Factor A – the rate of mineral nutrition (the test plot without fertilizers; N30P45; N60P90); and Factor В – foliar feeding with the Wuxal Microplant, Khelafit Combi and Fitomare preparations. The weather conditions in the years of the research were typical for this growing zone. It was established that the year 2017 was the least favorable with excessively low soil moisture and high temperature regime for growing the crop, and the weather conditions of 2015 and 2016 were the most favorable for cultivating sunflower. The research made it possible to determine that fertilizers combined with multifunctional preparations had a considerable impact on the leaf area and photosynthetic potential of agrocenosis. It proves that foliar feeding of sunflower plants at the stage of 6-8 true leaves with growth regulators contributed not only to a change in the total chlorophyll content, but also to its fractional composition. In all the cases there was a major increase in the content of the fraction "а". In particular, the maximal increase in this fraction was 90%, whereas the difference did not exceed 76% in the fraction "b". Under nonfertilized conditions these indices were 48 and 13%, respectively.

Nutrient deficiency (ND) stands as a prominent environmental factor that significantly impacts global plant growth and productivity. While numerous methods have been employed for detecting nutrient deficiencies in plants, many of them are invasive, time-consuming, and costly. In contrast, chlorophyll fluorescence (ChlF) signals have emerged as a non-destructive tool for the identification of specific nutrient deficiencies, such as nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), across various plant species. In this pioneering study, ChlF measurements were employed for the first time to detect a combination of nutrient deficiencies, including deficiencies in nitrogen and phosphorus (-NP), nitrogen and potassium (-NK), potassium and phosphorus (-KP), and a complete NPK deficiency (-NPK). The experiment was conducted using wheat (Triticum aestivum) and maize (Zea mays) plants, which were grown under controlled laboratory conditions. An optimal hydroponic system was established to facilitate eight experimental conditions, namely: control, -N, -P, -K, -NP, -NK, -KP, and -NPK. Measurements were systematically collected at two-day intervals over a span of 24 days. Our findings demonstrate that chlorophyll fluorescence signals can enable the differentiation of various nutrient deficiencies even prior to the onset of observable symptoms. Furthermore, the examination of chlorophyll fluorescence parameters enables us not only to identify a singular macronutrient deficiency but also to detect multiple macronutrient deficiencies concurrently in a plant.

Asia) leaves those values were almost unchanged after treatment. Fv/Fo and Rfd were reduced more than other values, indicating inhibition of the oxygen-evolving complex and cooperation between the light and dark photosynthesis reactions as the primary targets of UV-B. The photosynthetic electron transport rate showed less change directly after irradiation, but after 24 h of recovery it was reduced to 50% of the control. Generally, photosystem II of peppermint leaves appeared more tolerant to the applied UV-B radiation than in cucumber leaves.

This paper describes the applications and accuracy analyses of our multi-component model of marine photosynthesis, given in detail in Woźniak et al. (2003). We now describe an application of the model to determine quantities characterising the photosynthesis of marine algae, especially the quantum yield of photosynthesis and photosynthetic primary production. These calculations have permitted the analysis of the variability of these photosynthesis characteristics in a diversity of seas, at different seasons, and at different depths. Because of its structure, the model can be used as the ‘marine part’ of a ‘satellite’ algorithm for monitoring primary production in the sea (the set of input data necessary for the calculations can be determined with remote sensing methods). With this in mind, in the present work, we have tested and verified the model using empirical data. The verification yielded satisfactory results: for example, the statistical errors in estimates of primary production in the water column for Case 1 Waters do not exceed 45%. Hence, this model is far more accurate than earlier, less complex models hitherto applied in satellite algorithms.

Some 140 years ago sea slugs that contained chlorophyll-pigmented granules similar to those of plants were described. While we now understand that these “green granules” are plastids the slugs sequester from siphonaceous algae upon which they feed, surprisingly little is really known about the molecular details that underlie this one of a kind animal-plastid symbiosis. Kleptoplasts are stored in the cytosol of epithelial cells that form the slug’s digestive tubules, and one would guess that the stolen organelles are acquired for their ability to fix carbon, but studies have never really been able to prove that. We also do not know how the organelles are distinguished from the remaining food particles the slugs incorporate with their meal and that include algal mitochondria and nuclei. We know that the ability to store kleptoplasts long-term has evolved only a few times independently among hundreds of sacoglossan species, but we have no idea on what basis. Here we take a closer look at the history of sacoglossan research and discuss recent developments. We argue that, in order to understand what makes this symbiosis work, we will need to focus on the animal’s physiology just as much as we need to commence a detailed analysis of the plastids’ photobiology. Understanding kleptoplasty in sacoglossan slugs requires an unbiased multidisciplinary approach.

The paper is an attempt to determine an assimilation surface of plants using a video-computer method. The tests covered five plants. The tests were performed only on leaf blades having decisive effect on photosynthesis process [Hall 1999]. The purpose of the performed tests was to determine the assimilation surface of the leaves of selected plants using video-computer method. A photosyntetic surface was determined for single plants and per cultivation surface unit. It was demonstrated that for bifoliate plants this procedure could not be used, and for grain crops its application was limited.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the physiological response and growth of tomato transplants grown under different light treatment. During cultivation period (November - December), the transplants received supplemental artificial lighting provided by standard high-pressure sodium lamps (HPS) or high-power solid state lighting modules with red, blue and far red LEDs. Quantum irradiance in both combinations was maintained at the same level. The third group of plants (control combination) was grown under the natural light (without supplemental lighting). The following measurements were taken: leaf gas exchange (net photosynthesis and transpiration rate), leaf greenness index (relative chlorophyll content) and the most important morphological parameters (fresh weight of plant organs, leaf surface area, plant height). The results showed that supplemental illumination using LED or HPS light sources affected growth and physiological responses of tomato plants. The higher rates of gas exchange and leaf greenness index as well as enhanced growth were found in the plants grown under conditions of artificial lighting (compared to control ones). Additionally, significant differences (as a result of light spectral quality) were found between the plants lighted with HPS lamps or LED modules. LED lighting resulted in the stem elongation, greater weight of plant organs and higher chlorophyll content in the leaves. The obtained results proved that HPS lamps can be replaced by LEDs in greenhouse lighting systems. However, much work still has to be done to optimize lighting spectrum of LED modules for the cultivation of the specific crop species.

Opis:
The origin of plastids is best explained by endosymbiotic theory, which dates back to the early 1900s. Three lines of evidence based on protein import machineries and molecular phylogenies of eukaryote (host) and cyanobacterial (endosymbiont) genes point to a single origin of primary plastids, a unique and important event that successfully transferred two photosystems and oxygenic photosynthesis from prokaryotes to eukaryotes. The nature of the cyanobacterial lineage from which plastids originated has been a topic of investigation. Recent studies have focused on the branching position of the plastid lineage in the phylogeny based on cyanobacterial core genes, that is, genes shared by all cyanobacteria and plastids. These studies have delivered conflicting results, however. In addition, the core genes represent only a very small portion of cyanobacterial genomes and may not be a good proxy for the rest of the ancestral plastid genome. Information in plant nuclear genomes, where most genes that entered the eukaryotic lineage through acquisition from the plastid ancestor reside, suggests that heterocyst-forming cyanobacteria in Stanier’s sections IV and V are most similar to the plastid ancestor in terms of gene complement and sequence conservation, which is in agreement with models suggesting an important role of nitrogen fixation in symbioses involving cyanobacteria. Plastid origin is an ancient event that involved a prokaryotic symbiont and a eukaryotic host, organisms with different histories and genome evolutionary processes. The different modes of genome evolution in prokaryotes and eukaryotes bear upon our interpretations of plastid phylogeny.

Abiotic stressors contribute to growth restriction and developmental disorders in plants. Early detection of the first signs of changes in plant functioning is very important. The objective of this study was to identify chlorophyll fluorescence parameters that change under phosphorus deficiency stress in cucumber. In this work, a trail to study the early changes caused by phosphorus deficiency in cucumber plants by analysing their photosynthetic performance is presented. Chlorophyll-a fluorescence (ChF) parameters were measured every 7 days for a period of 28 days. Measurements were made separately on young and old leaves and on cucumber fruit. Parameters that decreased during the stress were: p2G, PI abs, PI total, REo/CSo, and TRo/CSo. P deficiency decreased total electron carriers per RC (ECo/RC), yields (TRo/ABS (Fv/Fm), ETo/TRo, REo/ETo, ETo/ABS and REo/ABS), fluxes (REo/RC and REo/CSo) and fractional reduction of PSI end electron acceptors, and damaged all photochemical and non-photochemical redox reactions. Principal component analysis revealed a group of ChF parameters that may indicate early phosphorus deficiency in cucumber plants. Our results are used in the discovery of sensitive bioindicators of phosphorus deficiency in cucumber plants. Most JIP test parameters are linked to mathematical equations, so we recommend using of advanced statistical tools, such as principal component analysis, which should be considered very useful for stress identification. It has also been shown to be more effective in multivariate methods compared to univariate statistical methods was demonstrated.

Studies carried out over the past two decades, gives a promising perspective biohydrogen production. However in terms of economy pro-cess its efficiency must be significantly increased. A current research goal should be to find new methods of recovery of hydrogen from organic substrates at the highest level. Biohydrogen production by fermentation is the most frequently indicated as the most effective method.

Opis:
Several dinoflagellates are known to practice acquired phototrophy by either hosting intact algal endosymbionts or retaining plastids. The acquisition of phototrophy in dinoflagellates appears to occur independently over a variety of orders, rather than being restricted to any specific order(s). While dinoflagellates with intact algal cells host endosymbionts of cyanobacteria, pelagophyte, prasinophyte or dictyochophyte, most organelle-retaining dinoflagellates acquire plastids from cryptophytes. In dinoflagellates with acquired phototrophy, the mechanism by which symbionts or plastids are obtained has not been well studied at sub-cellular or ultrastructural level, and thus little is known regarding their mechanism to sequester and maintain photosynthetic structures, except for three cases, Amphidinium poecilochroum, Gymnodinium aeruginosum, and Dinophysis caudata with peduncle feeding. Dinoflagellates with acquired phototrophy display different degrees of reduction of the retained endosymbiont and organelles, ranging from those which contain intact whole algal cells (e.g. green Noctiluca scintillans), to those which have retained almost a full complement of organelles (e.g., Amphidinium poecilochroum and Podolampas bipes), to those in which only the plastids remain (e.g., Amphidinium wigrense and Dinophysis spp.). A series of events leading to acquisition and subsequent degeneration of a whole-cell endosymbiont have been widely recognized as evolutionary pathway of the acquisition of plastids. However, recent work on D. caudata suggests that acquisition of phototrophy by predation (i.e. kleptoplastidy) may be a mechanism and evolutionary pathway through which plastids originated in dinoflagellates with ‘foreign’ plastids other than the ‘typical’ peridinin-type plastids. Most organelle-retaining dinoflagellates are facultative mixotrophs, with Dinophysis species and an undescribed Antarctic dinoflagellate being the only obligate mixotrophs known so far. The establishment of dinoflagellates with acquired phototrophy in cultures and careful research using the cultures would help improve our knowledge of the evolution of the dinoflagellate plastids and their ecophysiology.

Opis:
Pea is one of the most important legumes grown in the world. The seeds are used for food production and animal feed. The problem with its cultivation is the low yield and sensitivity to the course of the weather. The important factor is to determine the optimal sowing rate and row spacing, especially for new cultivars of pea. Therefore, research was undertaken to assess the effect of row spacing and sowing density on selected physiological parameters, yielding, and structural elements of peas cv. ‘Batuta’ in Poland. The results of the research showed that the row spacing and sowing density determine the values of plant physiological parameters, yield of pea seeds and protein content. The increase in plant density in the canopy caused a decrease in the measured parameters of chlorophyll fluorescence, such as maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) and maximum quantum yield of primary photochemistry (Fv/F0) and performance index (PI). The leaf area index (LAI) was lower with a wider row spacing. Row spacing and plant density determined yield of pea seeds, number of pods and seeds per plant and weight of seeds per plant. Wider row spacing resulted in a decrease in the protein content in seeds, while an increase in sowing density from 70 to 110 m2 caused its increase. The course of the weather during the vegetation period of plants significantly influenced the obtained results.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the physiological response and growth of strawberry plants grown under different light treat-ment. During cultivation period (February-May), the plants (two cultivars: ‘Elsanta’, ‘Grandarosa’) received supplemental artificial lighting provided by standard high-pressure sodium lamps or high-power solid-state lighting modules with red, blue and far red LEDs. Quantum irradiance in the both combinations was maintained at the same level. The third group of plants (control combination) was grown under the natural light (without sup-plemental lighting). The following measurements were taken: photosynthetic rate, leaf greenness index (relative chlorophyll content), fruit yield and the most important morphological parameters (fresh weight of plant organs, leaf surface area, crown diameter). The results showed that supplemental illumi-nation using LED light source affected photosynthesis (higher rates), growth (higher foliage weight and area) and productivity of ‘Grandarosa’ straw-berry plants. On the opposite, no significant effect of supplemental artificial lighting on performance of ‘Elsanta’ plants was recorded. The obtained results showed that LED lamps could be used in greenhouse lighting systems. However, much work still has to be done to optimize lighting spectrum of LED modules for the cultivation of the specific crop species and cultivars.

Opis:
Our objective was to identify combinations of irrigation and fertiliser application that promoted the photosynthetic productivity and water use efficiency (WUE) of Catalpa bungei. Using response surface methodology based on a rotatable central composite design, we conducted a pot experiment with C. bungei clone 004-1 seedlings. The experiment quantified the effects of interactions between soil water content (W), nitrogen application rate (N), and phosphorus application rate (P) on leaf net photosynthetic rates (Pn), SPAD values (SPAD-502 meter readings of leaf chlorophyll), and carbon isotope composition (δ13C). N had significantly positive effects on the all three leaf parameters, while W had significantly negative effects on leaf δ13C signatures but positive effects on leaf Pn and SPAD values. The magnitude of the N effect exceeded that of the W effect. P had no significant effects on any of the three leaf parameters. The W × N interaction had significant positive effects on Pn and SPAD, but significant negative effects on leaf δ13C. Thus, irrigation and nitrogen application had different effects on seedling growth and WUE, and the two effects were interactive. Catalpa bungei growth was promoted by appropriately increasing nitrogen application and irrigation, but WUE was improved by increasing N and decreasing irrigation. Therefore, strategies for the irrigation and fertilisation of C. bungei plantations should be designed to appropriately balance plant growth and WUE.

Opis:
Odmiana Aura – posiada białe nasiona a Toska – czerwone. Oznaczono następujące parametry w stanie adaptacji ciemniowej: Fv/Fm – maksymalna sprawność fotosystemu PS II. Natomiast w stanie adaptacji do światła zmierzono: DF/Fm’ – efektywna wydajność fotosystemu PS II, współczynnik fotochemicznego qP oraz niefotochemicznego qN wygaszania fluorescencji.
In cultivation of plants, stress factors often occur, which affect the limitation of the intensity of the photosynthesis process, which in turn may cause a decrease in the size and quality of the plant yield. In such cases, it is justified to use biostimulants to improve the size and quality of the obtained crops, with no negative impact on the natural environment. Therefore, the presented work analyzed the effect of the Asahi SL biostimulant on the efficiency of the photosynthetic apparatus of Phaseolus vulgaris L. bean. Field research was carried out in 2013 and 2014, for two varieties of beans commonly grown in Poland and processed by the food industry, Aura – white seeds and Toska – red seeds. In the growing seasons two measurements of photosynthetic activity of the bean plant leaves (leaves from six plants from each plot) were carried out: measurement I – the week after the first use of the biostimulant; II measurement – a week after the second application of the biostimulator. In the case of a single spray, the second measurement was carried out at the second stage of the plant's development. In the studies with beans, an attempt was made to assess the performance of the photosynthetic apparatus by measuring some parameters of chlorophyll fluorescence after the foliar application of the Asahi SL biostimulant. The photosynthetic activity of plants was determined by measuring the fluorescence induction of chlorophyll using a fluorimeter. The following parameters were marked in the darkroom adaptation state: Fv / Fm – maximum efficiency of the PS II phototype. Whereas, in the state of light adaptation, the following measurements were measured: DF/Fm’ – effective performance of the PS II photosystem, photochemical qP and non-chemical qN quenching of fluorescence. The results obtained from the field experiments indicate the multidirectional effect of the Asahi SL biostimulant on the photosynthetic activity of experimental plants, as evidenced by the lower values of some parameters of chlorophyll fluorescence (FC) induction as compared to the control series. In addition, it was observed that beans treated with Asahi SL solution were characterized by greater photosynthetic efficiency, as evidenced by the increase in real photochemical efficiency related to the efficiency of electron transport (DF/Fm’). However, not all the combinations showed an increase in this parameter compared to the control. In the conditions of the tests, it was found that the Aura cultivar was characterized by a better efficiency of the photosynthetic apparatus. This is evidenced, among others, by the photochemical coefficient of quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence (qP). In addition, the studies also showed that the upward trend in the qura coefficient of the Aura cultivar did not occur only after the biostimulant application for bean plants was applied twice. The identical trend was found in the Toska cultivar after spraying the plants with 0.1% Asahi SL solution twice. In the conducted experiment, a higher increase in the non-chemical quenching index was observed in Toska cultivars in comparison with the Aura cultivar.

Soil contamination with heavy metals leads to the accumulation of significant amounts of these elements in plants and disrupts their growth and development. The current experiment investigated the effect of lead in the form of Pb(NO3)2 in water solutions of various percentages (0.1%, 1%, 3%) on the germination of maize grains (Zea mays L.), plant growth (fresh and dry mass ) and their photosynthetic activity. The experiment was performed on plants grown from grains germinated on lead solutions and on plants germinated in distilled water, and watered with lead solutions during growth. The negative influence of lead solutions on the germination capacity of grains was demonstrated. Regardless of the timing of lead application, maize elongation growth was clearly inhibited. Similar results were obtained for the masses of the examined plant organs. The rate of transpiration influenced the photosynthesis intensity and depended on the concentration of the lead solution. Along with the increase in lead concentrations a negative effect of lead on all the parameters tested was observed. In general, it can be concluded that only proper management of arable soils can limit the uptake of heavy metals by plants and thus improve their growth and development.

Opis:
Mosses are convenient organisms for studying the reaction to water stress because they do not have an epidermis, which makes them more sensitive to changes in humidity than most other plants. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of water stress on the course of physiological processes of mosses using Polytrichum piliferum Hedw. The present study showed that the action of the abiotic stressor, which is water, adversely affects the photosynthesis and dark respiration processes by reducing their intensity. However, it is worth noting that the respiration process is less dependent on tissue hydration than the photosynthesis, which is clearly demonstrated by the study results. The bryophytes’ resistance to stress factors is responsible for the plant’s ability to maintain homeostasis under stress conditions. The ability to change homeostasis by adapting, surviving or overcoming adverse living conditions also plays an important role.

Opis:
This volume contains a set of eight papers presenting the results of the latest research into the interaction of light with marine phytoplankton by teams from the Marine Physics Department at the IO PAS in Sopot, and the Department of Environmental Physics at the Pedagogical University of Słupsk. These results were presented at the ‘Second Workshop on Luminescence and Photosynthesis of Marine Phytoplankton’ (Sopot–Paraszyno, 11–15 October 1999) sponsored by the Polish State Committee for Scientific Research. This introductory article discusses the most important assumptions and objectives of the research, and outlines the latest results. These are subsequently discussed in detail in the following papers: (1) Majchrowski & Ostrowska, Influence of photo- and chromatic acclimation on pigment composition in the sea, (2) Woźniak et al., Model of the ‘in vivo’ spectral absorption of algal pigments. Part 1. Mathematical apparatus, (3) Majchrowski et al., Model of the ‘in vivo’ spectral absorption of algal pigments. Part 2. Practical applications of the model, (4)Ostrowska et al., Variability of the specific fluorescence of chlorophyll in the ocean. Part 1. Theory of classical ‘in situ’ chlorophyll fluorometry, (5) Ostrowska et al., Variability of the specific fluorescence of chlorophyll in the ocean. Part 2. Fluorometric method of chlorophyll a determination, (6) Ficek et al., Influence of non-photosynthetic pigments on the measured quantum yield of photosynthesis, (7) Ficek et al., Variability of the portion of functional PS2 reaction centres in the light of a fluorometric study. For the reader’s convenience, we append a list of the symbols denoting the physical quantities used in the texts. The nomenclature and denotations are in line with the conventions employed in the subject literature.
