Opis:
This text is an attempt at reading the relation between Miron Białoszewski’s prose and the urban space with the use of the category of urban practices and speech genres. In this perspective also literature becomes a type of urban practice, practicing the autobiographic space by Białoszewski The article demonstrates its meanings and functions. A particular emphasis was put upon the specificity of urban space and a “transmitter” of these practices, which is always “a transmission”, an active and meaning producing element of literary communication.

Opis:
This paper is devoted to the problem of practice and good practices in age management as it relates to the employment of older people. It describes how stereotypes connected with employee age are responsible for a phenomenon called ageism—i.e. certain managerial attitudes and behaviors preventing age management that can be seen as good practices. The paper analyses literature on the practice of age management and presents the selected opinions of managers on managing older employees as derived from the “Research on SMEs in the Mazovia Voivodeship” Report as conducted over the years 2010–2012 at the Kozminski University.

Opis:
This study compares Polish managers’ perceptions of their organizational culture and their beliefs concerning attributes necessary for leadership effectiveness, investigated in 1996/1997 and 2008/2009. As was unexpected, our results show that Polish managers of 2008/2009 score significantly higher than managers of 1996/1997 on Power Distance, Individualism, Masculinity and slightly lower on Future Orientation and Humane Orientation. Our findings suggest that more individualistic orientation in Polish organizations is still necessary in order to survive and be effective during the current turbulent and highly uncertain economic and business conditions. Relatively higher scores on Power Distance on the part of Polish managers being studied in the years 2008/2009 are also in line with findings concerned with attributes necessary for leadership effectiveness. Mean comparisons on beliefs concerning attributes necessary for leadership effectiveness show that Polish managers of 2008/2009 in comparison with their counterparts studied in 1996/1997 scored higher on Autocratic Orientation, Risk Avoidance, Isolationistic Orientation and Individualistic Orientation. Our findings are also consistent with regard to leadership attributes of Performance Orientation, Team Orientation, Decisiveness, Diplomatic, Humane Orientation, Integrity, Visionary and Charismatic/Inspirational, which are somewhat less strongly associated with leadership effectiveness by Polish middle managers investigated in 2008/2009 in comparison with their counterparts studied in 1996/1997.

Opis:
This paper explores effective uses of technology in teaching with a focus on a case study of English Language Learning (ELL) at a Moroccan university. A review of literature reveals a wide variety of pedagogical practices that are recommended by theory and implemented in practice. These theories and practices describe a spectrum of activities ranging from “traditional” practices that develop specific skills at a similar pace and with a high level of teacher monitoring to “emerging” practices that emphasize independent learning, collaboration, and project- or group-based tasks that assist students in becoming life-long learners and users of technology. The case study focuses on grammar courses in which these Moroccan students improve their knowledge of English grammar in order to be prepared to use English at the academic level. The results reveal that grammar teachers employ a variety of pedagogical practices in their use of the CALL but the majority tends toward “tutorial” or “traditional” approach whereas some of the practices employ the “authentic materials engagement” or “computer-mediated communication” approach as identified in the literature review. Students, when asked what they would do differently if they were the teacher, often identified practices that would be consistent with the emerging practice paradigm even if they had not been exposed to that kind of CALL practice.

Theoretical background: Employees’ behavior plays a crucial role in the organizational environmental performance. There are many factors which influence pro-ecological behavior among employees, however, this paper focuses on the practices related to green human resources management (HRM) and – in particular – to the HR function.Purpose of the article: The purpose of this paper is to answer the following research questions: 1) What is the scope of using the practices related to the green HR function? 2) Which elements of the green HR function require further improvement?Research methods: For the purpose of the article, literature studies and empirical research based on a survey method have been used. In her analyses, the author has included additional variables such as the origin of capital and company size.Main findings: The organizations under study are in the preliminary stages as far as the implementation of green HRM practices is concerned. Both variables (the company size and the origin of capital) play a role in the implementation of the analyzed practices.

Opis:
This paper on Socio-Cultural Values and Children’s Rights in Calabar analyses the history and value system associated with child upbringing in the city of Calabar. Communalism, which ensured child socialisation from birth, was a common practice in Calabar like in other areas of Africa and Nigeria until European incursion and eventual introduction of capitalism during colonial times. This change resulted in the diminishing of communal lifestyle and reduction of family sizes to nuclear forms. It also necessitated the population increase and related social problems. Although historical in content and analysis, the paper adopted the multidisciplinary approach of reconstruction with data gleaned from primary and secondary sources. Findings showed that right from pre-colonial times, inhuman practices that abused children’s rights like child pawning and killing of twins characterised this study area. Population increase and the rise of urban poor and slums resulted in the breeding of abused children, with most homeless on the streets of Calabar. Witchcraft labelling and child trafficking were also highlighted as other significant and recurring causes of child abuse in Calabar. This paper concluded by reiterating that as Calabar flouts its status as a ‘restful city’, children must not be denied of this ‘restful’ lifestyle. Child rights must be implementable and child right violators prosecuted.

In this article, I analyze Charles Crittenden’s account of fictional objects in his Unreality: The Metaphysics of Fictional Objects (1991). I argue that Crittenden’s sketchy ontology of fictional objects does not support his weak eliminativism. Going along the lines of Amie Thomasson (1999), I stress that the problem of fictional objects is a strictly ontological problem, which requires an ontological solution. A solution to the problem of fictional objects (or ficta) that accommodates “practice” (ordinary language and literary practices) is of course to be praised, but not when it is foregrounded at the expense of “ontology.” I argue for Roman Ingarden as a champion of ontology and practice, whose way of dealing with ficta fares better than Crittenden’s on both the ontological and practical sides. In short, ficta should be approached as something over and above mere grammaticalia (grammatical objects) namely as “purely intentional” objects that are formally incomplete, and which readers complete by resorting to practices of language and literary criticism.

The paper is based on archival materials, ie acts of visitation. It says about how the faithful practiced the sacraments and participated in Sunday and holiday services in their parochial churches. The research points to an enormous role of religious practices, which affected the overall shape of religious-social life of the people living in the territory and epoch under study. This important role was particular apparent in the reception of the sacraments, especially Easter confession and the Holy Communion.

Opis:
Context Software start-ups have shown their ability to develop and launch innovative software products and services. Small, motivated teams and uncertain project scope makes start-ups good candidates for adopting Agile practices. Objective We explore how start-ups use Agile practices and what effects can be associated with the use of those practices. Method We use a case survey to analyze 84 start-up cases and 56 Agile practices. We apply statistical methods to test for statistically significant associations between the use of Agile practices, team, and product factors. Results Our results suggest that development of the backlog, use of version control, code refactoring, and development of user stories are the most frequently reported practices. We identify 22 associations between the use of Agile practices, team, and product factors. The use of Agile practices is associated with effects on source code and overall product quality. A teams’ positive or negative attitude towards best engineering practices is a significant indicator for either adoption or rejection of certain Agile practices. To explore the relationships in our findings, we set forth a number of propositions that can be investigated in future research. Conclusions We conclude that start-ups use Agile practices, however without following any specific methodology. We identify the opportunity for more fine-grained studies into the adoption and effects of individual Agile practices. Start-up practitioners could benefit from Agile practices in terms of better overall quality, tighter control over team performance, and resource utilization.
