After the adoption of the understanding of political power as a game of social agen-cy in a politically organized community, the author states that the scope of the subjectivi-ty of both sides of power relations is variable, but the subjectivity of subordinates cannot be completely reduced. He defines political opposition as a normatively regulated and institutionally realized right to resist power entities.

An absentee from the Western culture, the phenomenon of menstruation is an unlikely theme to be found in the British and American media and literature. Historically and culturally the Menstrual blood was considered impure and maudit, thus positioning the menstruating women at the bottom of the power hierarchies, and asserting the social status-quo of the male dominance. Menstruation is also subjected to capitalization which has been shaping the Menstrual attitudes and practices. The aim of the article is to draw a sketch of what menstruating means in the British and American cultures, as well as to reflect on its frequent absence from the cultural deliberations.

Th is article analyzes political narratives of the discourse on the future use of nuclear energy in Hungary. In light of the January 2014 parliamentary decision to expand Hungarian nuclear energy production capacity with Russian technology and fi nancing, the article examines parliamentary addresses of the period 2010–2013 to identify and interpret characteristics and changes in nuclear narratives of parliamentary parties and the government. Th e content analysis includes identifi cation of framing, characteristics of choice of language, realization of risk and of benefi t oriented speaking patterns, and the assessment of power relations between the political actors. Th e article argues that the nuclear communication strategies of political parties show distinct approaches: full f ront approach to include nuclear aspects of all possible issues, avoidance that attempts not taking sides in this issue, and re-direction that, within the nuclear framing, places a focus on other aspects with the purpose to re-defi ne the dominant framing and to rule the discourse. Risk awareness patterns range from comprehensive to occasional, selective and latent risk perception structures. Th e Risk Perception Index, comprehending levels of risk and benefi t perception, can serve as a model to measure, in numeric terms, the support or critique of the nuclear agenda.

This paper focuses on the sociological analysis of power relations in terms of the concept of the network society. It starts with a discussion on the network approach and its understanding in social sciences. The author analyzes several mediating notions such as social network, power, structure, language, and collectivity grounded in the sociological approach. Further analysis leads to the discussion of power relations in technologically developed societies. The author searches for answers to many fundamental questions to open up avenues for building a coherent network theory. To achieve these goals, she uses a sociological approach that is based mainly on the criticism of writing and the analytical and synthetic methods.

Opis:
This article examines the securitization of political discourse in reinforcing regimes of power in Kenya. It perceives securitized terrorism and counterterrorism discourse as political discourse. The article combines Foucault’s perspectives on discourse, discursive practices and power relations, and aspects of Securitisation Theory, that subjectively construct security threats, as a framework to analyse the securitization of terrorism and counterterrorism discourse and discursive practices in Kenya. The official speeches of key members of Kenya’s National Security Council, which is officially responsible for security matters in the country, form the core data. The arguments raised are that Somalis residing in Kenya are constructed as existential threats to national security in the terrorism and counterterrorism discourse and discursive practices of the members of the National Security Council. The construction is done on the basis of ethnicity, religion and ungoverned spaces. These three are examined as causal factors whose political outcome is the reinforcement of power relations. By securitizing discourse and discursive practices, the state legitimizes its role in implementing and enhancing its capacity to implement coercive norm-violation counterterrorism measures. The state also enhances its capacity to continually modify existing knowledge of terrorism and counterterrorism through communication, further reinforcing discrimination of Somalis in Kenya.

Opis:
Intended as a follow-up to Part 1 of the study focusing on the use of I mean in police interview data, Part 2 of the analysis offers insight into the recruitment of the related marker you know by the interviewers and the interviewees, respectively. In particular, acknowledging that the primary function of you know is that of “inviting addressee inferences” (Jucker, Smith 1998) and in agreement with the categorisation of functions proposed by Fox Tree and Schrock (2002), the paper reveals how you know is deployed for interpersonal, turn management, repairing, monitoring and organising purposes. To this end, it focuses on the syntactic behaviour of you know and examines the patterns of use linked to individual interview participants. What is more, given the potential of you know to invite addressee feedback, the analysis also looks at listener responses to you know and you know-introduced ideas, revealing at the same time the linguistic coding of power asymmetry in institutional interaction. In sum, Part 1 and Part 2 of the study highlight the subjective and intersubjective meanings conveyed by the markers I mean and you know in police interviews and draw attention to the contribution that pragmatic marker research can make to court and police interpreting practice.

Opis:
Drawing on interactional approaches to comment clauses (Stenström 1994; Povolná 2010), the paper reveals the discourse functions of I mean (Part 1) and you know (Part 2) in the context of police interviews. More specifically, taking into account the socio-pragmatic setting of police-suspect interaction, it highlights the context-dependence and the multifunctionality of these markers based on data from two police interview transcripts. Thus, following the spirit of the study by Fox Tree and Schrock (2002), Part 1 of the analysis demonstrates that while the primary role of I mean is that of “forewarning upcoming adjustments” (Schiffrin 1987), the marker performs interpersonal, turn management, repairing, monitoring and organizing functions. This being the case, the study examines the potential of I meanm to modify the ongoing interaction and stresses its contribution to the coherence of the interviewees’ narratives. Attention is also drawn to the syntactic environment in which I mean occurs as well as to listener responses to I mean and I mean-introduced ideas. Finally, the discussion touches upon the issue of power relations and shows the role which I mean plays in the linguistic manifestation of power in an institutional setting.

The article “Towards affirmative didactics” is a description of a project reflecting on the experience of teaching and learning in a systematic and complex manner. It is also an effort to define the conditions that could encourage values such as inclusiveness, tolerance, mindfulness, joint responsibility, as well as engagement in and support for actions undertaken to strengthen the above-mentioned values. The project is a work in progress and it consists of two parts. The first one is critical and it describes the given situation by pointing the main threats involved. The second – affirmative one – was created with the effort to develop positive guidelines that would encourage transformations in the approach to didactics.

In the article I intend to describe the way in which “scientific” categories of race and class are invented and transferred into public culture and subsequently instrumented in creating and maintaining imaginaries and practices of colonial and postcolonial power relations. I interpret colonialism and postcolonialism in a very broad context, as a continuum encompassing creation and recreation of the contemporary rules and phenomena that are related to the functioning of nation-state power, which in turn is shaped, as a set of ideas, by discourses of public culture. My arguments derive from anthropological research on social mobility and are illustrated with examples from Jamaica and the USA.

Here the concepts of political governing are considered as a social relationship and social resource; proposed, too, is the application of the category of the social field in the analysis of local government. Such social fields are characterized by both relations and resources associated with power when viewed from the standpoint of actions and structures. A separate aspect making itself known in the field of political power is its manifestations and influences.

This paper reports on the findings of these aspects of my own semi-ethnographic study which relate to the reader-oriented view of didactic discourse and emphasize the constitutive impact of social context (and the relations of power inscribed in it) on the formation of the writer’s self. Following Halliday’s (1978, 1994) approach to “language as a form of social practice” I will argue that power relations are a central force which mediates didactic discourse and profoundly affects the way student writers construct their authorial self.

Opis:
The article examines the role of power in economic theory, with a special focus on the microeconomic theories of the firm. The aim of the paper is twofold. First, the author provides a comprehensive explanation of the concept of power in an enterprise. Second, he attempts to prove that microeconomic theories of the firm may benefit considerably from the theory of power and its findings. The author develops an expanded definition of power based on Dahl’s concept. Two key theoretical approaches to power are presented: managerial and critical. The role of power in neoclassical, behavioral, managerial, institutional, new-institutional and micro-micro theories is examined. The author checks if the findings of the theory of power can be incorporated into microeconomic theories. The analysis reveals that the concept of power is not fully utilized and sometimes even neglected by microeconomic theory. This is despite the fact that the theory of power can enrich the microeconomic view and understanding of the enterprise, Miroński says. He looks at power as a neutral (not necessarily negative), dynamic and complex concept that can help explain many important microeconomic issues. Behavioral and managerial theories propose many alternative goals of the enterprise, and the concept of power may help predict which of these goals would dominate in a given situation. Transaction costs or “ineffectiveness X” from Leibenstein’s micro-micro theory are influenced by power relations within the company. Further research into the application of the theory of power in economic theory seems to be both justified and promising, Miroński concludes.

This article discusses the transformations taking place in German theatre, triggered by the #MeToo movement. In Germany, these began in 2018 with the sexual harassment accusation of a prominent film and television director and producer, Dieter Wedel, although the activism of organisations drawing attention to violence against women began much earlier. Subsequent cases of harassment and violence in the workplace revealed in the media have prompted the theatre and film community to discuss corrective action on a systemic level. The article discusses both the actions taken by various organisations and associations, such as the Deutscher Bühnenverein (German Stage Federation), the Themis association or the non-profit organisation ensemle-netzwork, as well as research conducted in Germany (among others by Thomas Schmidt) on abuses of power in theatre and film. Their results clearly indicate the need for equality, anti-violence and anti-discrimination measures in the film and theatre industry, as well as a change towards a more democratic management model.

A bycie reprezentowaną – przejawem dyskryminacji. Dlatego konsekwencją tego, że kobiety przez wieki reprezentowane były przez mężczyzn, było odmawianie nam praw obywatelskich.
This article refers to relations between ideology, power and sex. Research in this field is carried out in the framework of gender studies and the “politics of representation”. In this article I discuss the impact of patriarchal and colonial ideology and religion on the representations of women, including women of colour, in culture. I also discuss the historical, social and political consequences of those representations for real women and their (our) lives. Representation is always a political act, an act of power. And being represented by others often means being discriminated against, which is frequently connected to a lack of civil rights.
