Opis:
The contemporary ‘face’ of Bruno Schulz is a result of the collaboration between several visions as well as the specific relation between presence and absence. To a large extent, this fact allows the treatment of Schulz’s reconstructed image not as the static whole, but rather as a dynamic and open identity, defined not only by the biographical reconstructions, but also by its fragmentation and incompleteness. One of the questions that the article evokes is, whether absence can serve as a factor in decoding Schulz’s nature.

The main aim of the article is to identify key interpretation issues in two texts by Adam Wiedemann. Both texts feature contemporary literary pictures of visits to Venice – the Polish author wrote a short story (Sens życia. Opowiadanie śródziemnomorskie, 1998) and a poem (Tramwaj na Lido, 2015) about his journeys to Italy. Those textual visions of the urban space of Venice show that Wiedemann is fully aware of many similar attempts made earlier yet still strives to stress his distinctness, creating a record of meetings of the contemporary visitor with the unique phenomenon of the unusual urban phenomenon.

The tactic of inquiring reading (close reading, explikation de texte) focuses mainly on the text’s subject – it is beneficial if it is of topical character. It is then easier to find and interprete intertextual connections which put some pieces together. In such reading of the chosen poems – Do Kossowskiej w tańcu by Trembecki and Król zabity by Grochowiak – we can see the classical high style of an enlightened poet and turpism, meaning the aesthetics of ugliness of the modern poet, who takes up the game with literary tradition. Aim. The aim of this paper is to depict ambivalent status of bygone city spaces - defined and identified by things that were there before - that are perceived as empty. Because they are obsolete, they do not function in accordance with their primarly intended use they become devastated and ruined, they create specific environment for various actions that in organised and sctructured spaces remain hidden and invisible. Method. The study is a reflexion on social functioning of city spaces perceived as abandoned – their ambivalent status in context of practices connected with urban space. Significant part of the article is a polemic with Kroessler's metaphore city as a palimpsest. Resullt and Conclusions. The analysis shows ambivalent status of urban spaces that are perceived as empty. They, by definition, consist of specific kind of absence and simoultaneously paradoxically they make some aspekts of urban space functioning visible.

The author of the article, Walentyna Sobol, analyzes documentary and literary books from Morocco and two émigré writers about Morocco. These are “Spells of Morocco” – the Ukrainian forgotten author Sofia Jabłońska (1907–1971) and “Moon in Tears” – contemporary writer Morocco Ouard Saillo, born in Morocco in 1974. Ouardy Saillo’s book, decorated with photos of the Saillo family, was written in German. For the first time is published in Polish translated by Barbara Otwinowska (published in 2005 in Warsaw). In 2018, in Kiev were published 107 photographs of Sofia Jabłońska from her times of work and travel around the world, including Morocco. The goal of the article is to reveal the phenomenon of persistence and bravery of both writers, different, but sometimes very similar intertextuality . The narrative of the documents is examined using a methodological approach, especially in terms of: “intertextuality is a study of the memory of literature” (Tadeusz Sławek). Using modern research in anthropology, including the lexicon of the culture of memory “Modi memorandi”, the author of the article investigates the phenomenon of intertextuality in the narratives of Jabłońska and Saillo. This comparative study of the autobiographical works of Ukrainian and Moroccan writers in Poland not only reveals the conclusions, but also opens wide research perspectives.

In this article we argue in favor of a useful model to explain the productive mechanisms of formation of verb + noun metaphorical collocations. We postulate that verbo-nominal collocations, relating to human activities and relating to the fields of techniques, crafts, art and manufactures constitute a model for the metaphorical collocations. We will apply our model to metaphorical collocations with the French verb forger. For the application of our model, a corpus analysis will be necessary.

Artykuł jest poświęcony kolejnym wersjom piosenki Miasteczko Bełz Aleksandra Olshanetsky’ego (muzyka): 1) Mein sztetełe Bełz, 1932 (słowa w jidysz Jacob Jacobs; przekład polski 1935 – J. Roman); 2) Miasteczko Bełz dwadzieścia lat po wojnie, dwie wersje z lat sześćdziesiątych (słowa Agnieszka Osiecka); 3) Miasteczko Bełz. Pół wieku później, połowa lat dziewięćdziesiątych (słowa Roman Kołakowski); 4) Warszawo ma, 1947 (słowa Ludwik Starski). Kolejne zmiany tekstu działają na zasadzie palimpsestu – częścią, która nie ulega zatarciu, jest słowo „miasteczko” i jego nacechowane historycznie znaczenie oraz melodia z żydowskim ludowym motywem muzycznym. Te dwa powtarzalne elementy sprawiają, że kolejne kontrafaktury ujawniają źródła wszechobecnej we współczesnym świecie nostalgii oraz dokumentują sposoby działania pamięci. Kontekstem dla rozważań jest opowiadanie Zygmunta Haupta Lili Marleen.

The article invites the readers to approach the city itself as a text of culture. We are to read it alongside other narratives/narrations (literary, artistic, and cinematic) devoted to it. The author traces how Katowice’s space has been transmuted into politically- and culturally-charged places, by distinguishing consecutive layers of the palimpsest (Polish village, building patterns of German and Polish times: the old and the new). The foregoing examples allow the author to indicate the traces of conceptions and ideologies reflected by architecture. He also includes some methodological recommendations/tips pertaining to reading the space.

Opis:
The main topic of this paper is a book entitled Mother Departs (1999) by Tadeusz Różewicz – a kind of polyphonic palimpsest, a memoir (with narrative prose, poems, photographies, etc.). In this article, the author analyzes statuses of many “authors” and lyrical subjects in Różewicz’s works and verifies a hypothesis about autobiographism of this book (in Lejeune’s understanding). It is also shown that there is no one coherent subject (identical with the real author) and the texts are, at the same time, fictional and nonfictional. Therefore, it is regarded that Tadeusz Różewicz creates a kind of “unique genre” (a term by E. Balcerzan), which is a literary form of his memory processes. For this reason, its construction is unavailable for an external reader.
Tematem artykułu jest wspomnieniowy tom Matka odchodzi (1999) Tadeusza Różewicza – książka wyjątkowa, polifoniczna, palimpsestowa i niespójna. W pracy dokonano analizy obecnych w dziele podmiotów autorskich, a także zweryfikowano przeświadczenie o autobiograficzności tekstu (według terminologii Lejeuene’a). Lektura wykazała, iż w tomie Różewicza brak jednego, spójnego, równoznacznego z rzeczywistym autorem podmiotu mówiącego oraz że umieszczone w książce teksty mają często podwójny, zależny od kontekstu, status (fikcjonalny/niefikcjonalny). Uznano więc, że Różewicz tworzy swoisty „gatunek jednorazowy” (termin Balcerzana) – wyjątkowo intymny i nieprzejrzysty, będący zapisem jego procesu wspominania, a więc niejako (pod względem wglądu do jego konstrukcyjnych reguł) niedostępny zewnętrznemu czytelnikowi.

The collective work, published in 2020, the theme of which is the culture of Bielsko-Biała documents the rich history of the 1wo-city. The city is analyzed on many levels by art historians, literary scholars and linguists. The publication restores the city`s memory related to the heritage of German and Jewish citizens, erased during the building of the Polish People’s Republic (the communist regime). The rediscovery of forgotten stories, symbols, and many other cultural artifacts is reminiscent of a palimpsest on which the experiences of subsequent generations have been overwritten. Getting to the original text is painstaking work that has been successfully undertaken and completed by the editors and authors of the individual chapters.

Marek Lobo Wojciechowski is a Lubusz writer intereseted in heterotopia phenomenon of the Western Lands of Poland. He attempts to understand and describe the Polish-German history of the place. This article is composed of two parts. First part concerns the image of the city that is presented in Wojciechowski’s poems. It is a place marked with the traces of its previous inhabitants. The second part shows the space of “post-Yalta Occident” in microscale: a house and things being inside. My goal is to answer the question whether the vision of Gorzów in this output is the image of two superimposed cities with palimpsest nature, or a merged city with dualistic nature.

Morgiana (1972) Juraja Herza jest uznawana za ostatni film Czechosłowackiej Nowej Fali. Piotrowski wskazuje na wieloznaczność tej atrybucji: chociaż film Herza jest owocem pewnej „szkoły” i jej estetyczną konsekwencją, to powstał w warunkach normalizacji, wprowadzonej przez komunistyczne władze CSRS po zdławieniu Praskiej Wiosny (oznaczała ona koniec wolności twórczej, upadek kina i powrót do estetyki socrealizmu). Świadczy o tym recepcja krytyczna Morgiany, deprecjonowanej jako – zaledwie – „poetycki horror” i „romantyczna przypowieść” o zwycięstwie doskonałego dobra nad ewidentnym, szpetnym złem. W filmie Herza nic jednak nie jest jednoznaczne: dzieło, także dzięki podwójnej roli Ivy Janžurovej, jawi się jako palimpsest, sugerujący, że świat filmowy jest metaforą i pozostaje w kontrze do rzeczywistości pozafilmowej. Piotrowski wykazuje, że mistrzowsko spreparowana, wielopoziomowa stylizacja jest w Morgianie medium kina autorskiego, źródłem dystansu i gorzkiej ironii oraz maską skrywającą przesłanie polityczne i etyczne.
Juraj Herz’s Morgiana (1972) is considered to be the last film of the Czech New Wave. Piotrowski points to the ambiguity of this attribution: although Herz’s film is the fruit of a certain “school” and its aesthetic consequence, it was made under the conditions of standardisation, introduced by the communist government of Czechoslovakia after the crushing of the Prague Spring (it meant the end of artistic freedom, the fall of cinema and the return to the aesthetics of socialist realism). This is evidenced by the critical reception of Morgiana, depreciated as – merely – “a poetic horror” and “romantic parable” about the victory of ideal good over blatantly perfect, hideous evil. In Herz’s film nothing is clear: the film, in part due to the double role of Iva Janzurovä, appears as a palimpsest, suggesting that the film world is a metaphor, and remains in opposition to the reality outside of film. Piotrowski shows that the masterfully put together, multilevel stylisation is in Morgiana a medium of cinema d’auteur, a source of distance and bitter irony and a mask concealing a political and ethical message.
