Opis:
This paper addresses underwater vegetation in soft water lakes which are influenced by the anthropogenic input of allochtonic dissolved organic matter (DOM) from drained bogs. The aim of this work is to test the hypothesis regarding the role of DOM in shaping the diversity of underwater vegetation. Large differences in underwater vegetation habitats, the limitation of their occurrence to increasingly shallower littoral (the depth of the lower limit of their occurrence decreased from 12 m up to 1 m) and the regression of underwater vegetation were observed in lake types ranging from oligohumic (median (Me) of DOC in water = 2.5 mg C dm-3) to polyhumic (Me of DOC = 35.6 mg C dm-3). The gradual simplification of internal plant patch structure occurred and the Shannon-Weaver diversity index decreased (Me 0.04 → 0.00). Fewer species were observed in the lakes (Me 9 → 2), and the underwater vegetation covered increasingly smaller areas. Species replacement did not occur and no invasive species appeared.

Opis:
This paper reviews the classifications of organic soils as applied in different countries, with particular attention drawn to those based on international and European norms. These norms propose the distinction of four groups of organic soils: peats (fibrous, pseudo-fibrous, and amorphous), gyttja and humic soils, which may be further divided into sub-groups. Organic soils are included within poor soils, because of their considerable susceptibility in relation to water, which causes their high compressibility, low strength and high shrinkage. Existing regional and international norms and plans appear not to characterise these soils sufficiently. The classification proposed in this paper will allow determination of the relationships between particular engineering geological parameters, which, to a large degree, will help planning of such objects as embankments or melioration structures. This is, however, possible only within particular genetic types. Organic soils developed in different conditions differ not only in organic matter content, but also in their chemical and physico-chemical character (i.e. degree of carbonisation, relation of humic acids to fulvic acids, bitumen content, degree of coagulation and decomposition of organicmatter). The evaluation of organic soils requires firstly the determination of their origin, and then each genetic group should be subdivided based on the content of organic matter. The relationships between the physical, physico-chemical and mechanical properties should be then determined within these groups.

Opis:
Soil organic matter (SOM) is an essential soil constituent. The deficiency of SOM is an essential problem in many regions in Poland. Diversity of organic matter and the environment create varying structures and compositions, and thus differences in properties of humic substances (HS) especially humic acids (HAs). It was found that soil amendment with organic matter resulted in improving of soil and HAs properties compared with non-treatment ones. The results obtained provided the following evidences. With respect to HAs: an increasing content of carboxylic groups in HAs from amended soils; a major content of aromatic ring systems; higher carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, and sulphur and lower oxygen contents comparing to the control; the addition of straw caused an increase of carbon content in HAs particles and, consequently a decrease of the C:H ratio; higher content of oxygen functional groups compared with non-treated ones. Organic matter from straw is more resistant to fast decomposition as compared to compost and it shows higher long-term sorption capacity. Therefore, straw may be an equivalent to natural sources of SOM in terms of agriculture and ecosystems protection.
W kwasach huminowych z gleb nawożonych stwierdzono większą zawartość węgla, wodoru, azotu i siarki oraz niższą zawartość tlenu w porównaniu do kwasów huminowych z gleb bez dodatku egzogennej materii organicznej. Dodatek słomy spowodował wzrost zawartości węgla w składzie pierwiastkowym kwasów huminowych a w konsekwencji zmniejszenie stosunku C:H. Materia organiczna ze słomy jest bardziej odporna na szybki rozkład w porównaniu z kompostem.

Opis:
The aim of the study has been to define the stocks and the basic properties of soil organic matter in agricultural-used soil sequence located in the former shoreline of disappearing lakes. The study area is located in the catchment of the Sumowskie Lakes, the Brodnica Lake District, North-Eastern Poland. The investigations involved preparation of five soil pits located in the south-western part of the former Sumowskie Lake bottom and on the southern slope of the adjacent kame hill. The greatest soil transformation is reflected in the quality and quantity of the soil organic matter. Indexes of organic matter quality and TOC stocks are significantly changing along the studied transect. The strongly humidified organic matter is found in mursh horizons. Gyttja layers above the groundwater level have a medium humification index. Horizons saturated with water are very low humidified. TOC stocks drop along the analysed soil sequence from the biogenic plain to the top of the kame hill.
Materia organiczna poziomów murszowych gleb pojeziornych odznacza się najwyższym stopniem humifikacji, warstwy gytii, powyżej poziomu wód gruntowych, pośrednim, a poziomy nasycone wodą najniższym spośród analizowanych. Zasoby węgla organicznego zmniejszają się wzdłuż transektu od gleb pojeziornych do szczytu pagórka kemowego (pararędziny).

Opis:
The microbiological activity associated with exmining soil remediation can be considered useful to accelerate the contaminant degradation. The use of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and organic matter exhibits potential in improving ex-nickel mining soil quality. The purpose of this study was to examine the ability of SRB in several organic fertilizers to reduce sulfate and nickel ions, and to increase pH of soil from nickel in mining areas. This study used the bacteria collection of the Soil Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Muslim Indonesia. Those were previously isolated from two cultivating pond of milkfish in the Kuri area of Maros Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The soil samples were collected from ex-mining areas of the Vale Indonesia Enterprise in Soroako, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Those were mixed with organic fertilizers, generated from sugarcane sludge, manure, and Quickstick (Gliricidia sepium) leaves, each with 50 and 100 g doses. The 5 kg soil samples were put into a pot and mixed evenly with organic fertil- izers. A general linear model (GLM) repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was adopted to analyze the data. The results of this study indicate that the application of SRB and fertilizer was effective in reducing concentration of sulfate and nickel. Among the three types of organic fertilizers, manure was effective in reducing sulfate and nickel concentrations, while Quickstick fertilizer was the more effective in stabilizing pH level. Fertilizer doses exhibited a significant effect on decreasing sulfate and nickel concentrations, but it exhibited no significant effect on stabilizing pH levels. At 10 days after treatment (DAT), the sulfate concentration decreased from 2,530 ppm to 1,443 ppm in treatment of SRB and manure with dose of 50 g and 1,363 ppm with that of 100 g. At the end of the observation (30 DAT), those were decreased to 1,217 ppm in treatment of SRB and manure with doses of 50 g and 1,167 ppm with that of 100 g. Among the three types of organic fertilizers used, Quickstick demonstrates the more effective reduction rate. At 10 DAT, pH increased in SRB treatment by 7.06 at a concentration of 50 g and 7.01 at a concentration of 50 g. At the end of the observation (30 DAT), the pH became 6.67 at a concentration of 50 g and 6.82 at a concentration of 50 g. The nickel concentration decreased from an origin concentration to 1,950 ppm in treatment of SRB and manure with doses of 50 g and 1,690 ppm with that of 100 g. Thus, the application of manure fertilizer and the addition of SRB is recommended for bioremediation of sulfate and nickel from ex-mining soil.

The characterization of organic matter (OM) in sedimentary rocks is important in many types of biological, geological and environmental research. The integrated use of microscopy and geochemistry, as here, is particularly useful in any attempt to define the origin and evolution of OM in sedimentary basins. The organic petrography and geochemistry different types of allogenic and authigenic OM from the Polish Outer Carpathian (POC) rocks were studied in present study to compare their genetic type, thermal maturity, depositional environment and post-sedimentation processes. Special attention was paid to redeposited coal clasts occurrences. The used techniques show differences in organic matter type originating from various sources. The organic petrography analysis shows that redeposited coal clasts (CC) and terrigenous organic matter (TOM) are composed predominantly of woody material (the gas-prone Type-III kerogen). Similar results were obtained during the Rock-Eval pyrolysis. Moreover, the GC-MS analysis of extracts indicated the additional source of OM, namely planktonic organic matter (POM) with oil-prone kerogen Type-I or II. This OM is in some cases high thermally mature and could potentially has allochthonous origin. The n-alkane, saturated and aromatic biomarker data revealed deposition of this POM in anoxic deltaic or close-shore sedimentary environments whereas the redeposited coal clasts were probably originally deposited in coal swamps as were the Upper Silesian bituminous coals.

Opis:
This paper reports the findings of two studies conducted to investigate the effects on pH, Eh and sulfate content of sulfuric soil material of acid sulfate soil following the addition of organic carbon and nitrogen. The first study compared the responses to simple carbon sources (glucose, sodium acetate and molasses) with complex organic matter in the form of chopped Phragmites. The second experiment considered the effect of nitrogen by testing organic matter with varying nitrogen content. The results of the first study showed that the changes in Eh and sulfate contents induced by these treatments mirrored the changes in pH, the highest change being only 5.6 units induced by sodium acetate. These results showed that organic carbon alone was ineffective in treating sulfuric soil material acidity, and that nitrogen was needed. Lucerne hay which had the highest nitrogen content produced the largest increase in pH by 4.2 units, and the changes of pea straw and wheat straw was 3.2 units. It was proposed that the alkalinising effect of the treatments was mediated by anaerobic microbial metabolism which required sources of nitrogen as well as organic carbon. The changes in soil redox conditions by -150 mV measured indicated that sulfur-reducing bacteria induced the changes in Eh, which caused pH to increase and sulfate content to decrease in comparison with nitrate-reducing bacteria. The findings of these studies have implications for management of sulfuric soil material acidity.

The study was conducted in the Górzno and Czarny Bryńsk Forest, ranges which belong to the Brodnica Forest Dis-trict. Brunic Arenosol (Dystric) soils predominate in the Brodnica Forest Division (over 77% of the total area). The aim of this study was to analyze the granulometric composition, the organic matter content and pH values in H2O and KCl at three genetic horizons of soils (A – humus, B – sideric and C – parent material) within the crown extension of four tree species: English oak, European beech, Scots pine and Norway spruce. Silt and clay had a signifi-cantly higher share of A-horizon compared with B and C hori-zons. Soil samples collected under the crowns of Norway spruces were characterized by a significantly higher percentage of sand and a significantly lower percentage of silt than soil samples col-lected under beech and pine trees. In the analyzed soil horizons, pH values increased significantly with depth regardless of tree species. Tree species had a significant effect on the pH of the analyzed soils and the organic matter content of A horizon. Soil samples collected under the crowns of Norway spruces had sig-nificantly lower pH values than those collected under pine trees. Soil samples collected under the crowns of Norway spruces had significantly higher organic matter content than those collected under oak trees. There was a very high negative correlation be-tween organic matter content and the values of pH measured in 1 M KCl, and a high negative correlation between organic matter content and the values of pH measured in H2O suspension.

The aim of the research was to evaluate the effectiveness of the coagulation process using pre-hydrolysed salts, polyaluminium chlorides, in reduction of water pollution with organic substances, including precursors to formation of trihalomethanes (THMs) during water chlorination. Surface water collected from the Stradomka river and from the Adriatyk reservoir located in Częstochowa was used for the research. In addition to typical indices used to assess the content of organic compounds (total and dissolved organic carbon TOC and DOC, oxygen consumption, ultraviolet absorbance UV254), the study also evaluated the potential of THM formation. Under the laboratory conditions of the process using pre-hydrolysed coagulants, reductions in oxygen consumption and TOC contents depending on the month and place when water was collected were 17–42% and 14–38%, respectively, whereas reduction in UV254 absorbance ranged from 39 to 69%. The study confirmed the usefulness of the coagulation process in the removal of organic matter, which represents a precursor for formation of trihalomethanes. The potential for THM formation in treated water was by 28–55% lower than in untreated surface water after chlorination. The concentration of trichloromethane was 78–93% of the total THM content in the chlorinated treated waters. Dissolved organic matter played a major role in CHCl3 formation (76–88%).

The article reports the conducted analyses of certain chemical parameters characterising the sediments of Poland’s Besko Reservoir. Specifically, determinations concerned the pH value, percentage organic matter (OM), total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), carbonates (CO32-), total phosphorus (TP) and its fractions, as well as heavy metals (Fe, Al, Cr, Cu, Ni, Cd, Zn, Mn). The sediments have a slight alkaline reaction, with pH values correlating positively with the high content of carbonates. The sediments have low organic matter content, while organic carbon accounts for about 30% of OM. The values for the C:N ratio point to an allochthonous origin for organic matter. The analysis of phosphorus fractionation showed that inorganic phosphorus (IP) is predominant at every research station. The lowest percentage for a fraction was in turn obtained for NAIP. This testifies to a slight anthropogenic impact of the catchment area. The sediments can be classified as of the 2nd purity class (according to PIG), due to their highest concentration of chromium. According to Müller’s classification, the sediments can be classified as purity class 3 (i.e. with moderate contamination). The values noted for the EF coefficient confirm a very strong enrichment by chromium ions. In addition, chromium, copper, nickel and cadmium have a negative effect on aquatic organisms. The results show that the sediments can be used for example in building and maintaining hydraulic structures.
