Opis:
Optimism is one human characteristic which for many years has been of central interest to psychology. This variable is usually treated as a one-dimensional human trait. This text presents a different view of optimism. It includes a discussion of a multidimensional questionnaire for the measurement of optimism: the Optimistic Attitude Questionnaire (OAQ). The OAQ measures four dimensions of optimism: achievement orientation, incaution, positive thinking, and openness. The results of a k-means clustering procedure that was conducted on a group of 766 adults are presented as well. The results of the analysis reveal five different profiles: global optimists, pessimists, cautious optimists, moderate optimists, and risk-takers. The obtained profiles are significantly different from each other - for example, with respect to the age of the participants and their evaluations of life satisfaction.

Opis:
Social work is about supporting people experiencing life’s hardships. The profession of a social worker belongs to the category of human services, in which a close relationship with another person is the essence of professional activity, as a consequence of which an employee may be exposed to confrontation with unpleasant emotions or other people’s sufferings. Students preparing to perform this profession should be equipped with skills such as an optimistic approach to life, because such an attitude definitely helps in dealing with difficulties and failures. The research shows that a significant percentage of social work students have a relatively low sense of optimism in all analyzed dimensions. The tendency to pessimistic perception of experienced events may result in low effectiveness of tasks implementation as well as negative consequences in the field of mental health.

Opis:
The main aim of the current study was to examine whether and how life satisfaction is related to propensity to forgive one’s transgressor. Additionally, it also explored the relationship between life satisfaction and other chosen psychological variables, such as optimism and gratitude. The study involved 338 persons between 16 and 83 years of age. For the measurement of psychological variables the following research tools were used: Satisfaction With Life Scale, Transgression- Related Interpersonal Motivations Inventory, Gratitude Questionnaire, and Learned Optimism Test. Among the study participants satisfaction with life was positively correlated with the conviction about a permanent and ubiquitous nature of positive events, optimism and gratitude. The study also observed a negative correlation between satisfaction with life, the motivation for revenge and avoidance motivation, and the perception of a permanent and ubiquitous nature of adverse events.

The main aim of this article is to present the results of the research carried out on pilots and professional drivers about their tendency to take risks. The studies have explored the relationship between temperamental characteristics, level of optimism and a tendency to take risks in groups of pilots and professional drivers. Moreover, there was an attempt to characterize and compare the two professional groups in terms of the variables tested. The results showed no relationship between the level of optimism and a tendency to take risks in both groups. However, there has been shown associations between temperamental characteristics and a tendency to risky behavior and some significant differences between groups in a range of variables examined. Finding determinants of risk taking is today one of the major issues in the area of transport psychology, among other things, from the viewpoint of increasing the level of safety of travelling and the mobility of people around the world.

Gödel’s disjunction
Opis:
In his 1951 Gibbs Memorial Lecture, Kurt Gödel put forth his famous disjunction that either the power of the mind outstrips that of any machine or there are absolutely unsolvable problems. The view that there are no absolutely unsolvable problems is optimism, the view that there are such problems is pessimism. In his 1995—and, revised in 2013—Verificationism Then and Now, Per Martin-Löf presents an illustrative argument for a constructivist form of optimism. In response to that argument, Solomon Feferman points out that Martin-Löf’s reasoning relies upon constructive understandings of key philosophical notions. In the vein of Feferman’s analysis, one might be object to Martin-Löf’s argument for either its reliance upon constructivist (as opposed to classical) considerations, or for its appeal to non-unproblematically mathematical premises. We argue that both of these responses fall short. On one hand, to be critical of Martin-Löf’s reasoning for its constructiveness is to reject what would otherwise be a scientific advance on the basis of the assumption of constructivism’s falsehood or implausibility, which is of course uncharitable at best. On the other hand, to object to the argument for its use of non-unproblematically mathematical premises is to assume that there is some philosophically neutral mathematics, which is implausible. Martin-Löf’s argument relies upon his third law, the claim that from the impossibility of a proof of a proposition we can construct a proof of its negation. We close with a discussion of some ways in which this claim can be criticized from the constructive point of view. Specifically, we contend that Martin-Löf’s third law is incompatible with what has been called “Poincaré’s Principle of Epistemic Conservation”, the thesis that genuine increase in mathematical knowledge requires subject-specific insight.

Dispositional optimism of nursing students significantly improves the effectiveness of their education. The aim of this study was to investigate the level of dispositional optimism among nursing students, determine the factors affecting the level of optimism and assessing how the level of optimism affects learning outcomes. The level of dispositional optimism was tested in the 2nd quarter of 2019, using the standardized Life Orientation Test questionnaire, adapted by R. Poprawa and Z. Juczyński. The average value of dispositional optimism among the nursing students studied was 15,18 (SD=3,41). High optimism was presented by 41.2% of respondents, moderate 38.2%, low 20.6%. The average rating (r=0,6953; p=0,000) and students progress in science (r=0,5272; p=0,001) were significantly related to the level of dispositional optimism. Among nursing students in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, most people present a high level of dispositional optimism. A high level of optimism was associated with better grades and improves learning outcomes.

Aim: The present study was designed to examine relationships between young people’s self-concepts and their perceptions of their futures Methods: High school students (n = 347) completed measures of the two domains of self‑concept, the evaluative domain, self-esteem, and the knowledge or structural domain, self-concept clarity. They also completed two measures of perceptions of their futures, optimism and future time perspective. Results: Both measures of self-concept were positively correlated with both measures of perception of the future. For both measures of perceptions of the future, regression analyses found that when perceptions of the future were regressed onto the two measures of self-concept perceptions of the future were significantly related to only self-esteem. Relationships between perceptions of the future and self-concept clarity were not significant. Analyses of mediation found that self-esteem mediated the relationship between self-concept clarity and both measures of perceptions of the future. Conclusion: Young people with a clearer sense of self and who have higher self-esteem are more optimistic and perceive a longer future than young people with a less clear sense of self and who have lower self-esteem; however, the effects of self-concept clarity disappear after the relationship between clarity and self-esteem are taken into account.

Optimism, according to the concept of positive psychology, is related to the cognitive style of explaining and of beliefs towards oneself, the world and others. Both optimism and achievement motivation are factors related to the creative activity of the individual and creative traits such as literary talents. The article shows the relationships between particular dimensions of the achievement motivation in a group of people with literary talents. the aim of the paper: The study was based on a comparative analysis within the level of achievement motivation and optimism among literary gifted individuals and in the control group. research methods: For the purposes of the research Inventory of Achievement Motivation (LMI) by H. Schuler and M. Prochaski in the Polish adaptation of W. Klinkosz and A. E. Sękowski along with the Questionnaire for the Study of Optimism by R. Stach were selected. results: The studies have shown that there are statistically significant differences between literate talented individuals and control group in terms of overall achievement motivation, preference for difficult tasks, flow, enthusiasm for learning and caring for prestige. Conclusion: Our in-house research shows that the achievement motivation and its dimensions can be considered on the basis of creative talents, because creativity promotes predispositions to achieve desired goals and derive satisfaction from them. It was not stated that optimism was a factor differentiating both groups, which probably results from the concept of development that assumes that the level of optimism decreases with age.

Badanie przeprowadzono dwukrotnie z wykorzystaniem Testu Orientacji Życiowej (LOT-R) autorstwa Michaela F. Scheiera, Charlesa S. Carvera i Michaela W. Bridgesa w adaptacji Zygfryda Juczyńskiego.
Work is one of the rehabilitation interactions used for centuries with convicts. It has changed its functions, although at the moment it does not serve as a punitive measure, but rather as a motivating factor for change. Numerous monographs and articles have been written about the work of convicts, but most of them show only the legal aspect of its execution. However, from a practical point of view, it is also important to examine to what extent it can be directly linked to changes in the attitudes and behaviour of those who have committed a crime. Therefore, it was decided to conduct research aiming at determination of the level of dispositional optimism in convicts working while serving a criminal sentence. It was assumed that in the study the dependent variable is the level of dispositional optimism, and the independent variables: the two-year period of work performed by convicts while serving a prison sentence and the professional status of the respondents. The study was conducted twice using the Life Orientation Test (LOT-R) by Michael F. Scheier, Charles S. Carver and Michael W. Bridges in an adaptation of Zygfryd Juczyński.

This article considers Steven Pinker’s recent outlook presented in his book Enlightenment Now. The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism and Progress. The paper discusses not only current political and philosophical Pinker’s views on a considerable number of evidences in favor of mankind’s progress in the last period. The authors claims that Pinker’s views may serve as an antidote to the contemporary pessimism that is being spread inter alia by mass media. The reader is pulled into a debate regarding issues surrounding the contemporary state of being of the human race. This is something more than just pop-scientific excursion of a well-established specialist beyond his area of expertise, but a valuable aggregate of data enticing also to professionals from the realm of sociology, philosophy and politics. Opis:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between distributed leadership and job self-efficacy with the mediating role of academic optimism of the teacher. This study is applied and correlation research based on structural equation modeling. 281 teachers of Zahedan city were selected using stratified random sampling. To collect information, three questionnaires were used: distributed leadership (Gholami, Sahranavard, & Azizi, 2014), job self-efficacy (Riggs & Knight, 1994) and teacher’s academic optimism (Beard, Hoy, & Woolfolk, 2010). For data analysis the Pearson correlation coefficient was calculated using SPSS and structural equation modeling was done using Lisrel software. Based on the results the direct effect of distributed leadership on job self-efficacy (β=0.33), the direct effect of distributed leadership on teacher’s academic optimism (β=0.76) and the direct effect of teacher’s academic optimism on job self-efficacy (β=0.42) was found to be significant. The indirect effect of distributed leadership on job self-efficacy was also found to be significant with the mediating role of organizational laziness (β=0.352). Therefore, it can be concluded that through applying a distributed leadership style in schools (with regard to trust-based leadership, a democratic climate, comprehensive support, and teachers’ professional development) the level of teachers’ academic optimism increases. With an increase in teachers’ academic optimism, their job performance can be expected to improve.

This study explores current trends in representing and communicating climate change by media industries. It reviews the current literature on mainstream media narratives of climate change focusing on their naturalization of progress and their techno-optimism (e.g., as regards geoengineering). It provides insight on how the media industry’s commercial agenda is linked to the types of disseminated messages and dominant imaginaries. It compares respective codes inherent in news media and film/fictional representations of climate change on representative examples. It traces the evolution of disaster/dystopian genres that involve climate issues. It discusses the implications from such a comparative analysis in terms of the potential failure to mobilize the public – to first imagine the alternatives and then to act collectively for the sake of the “post-carbon” future.

Opis:
The main question of the presented experiments has been whether the probability weighting function (Kahneman, Tversky, 1979) and configural weighting incorporated in the CPT model (Tversky & Kahneman, 1992) can account for the overweighting of positive outcomes and underweigthing of negative outcomes, the phenomena first observed in the 50−ties (Irwin, 1953; Marks, 1951; – Marks-Irwin effect) and called unrealistic optimism in the current literature. In Experiment 1, carried out with 133 students, the relations between expectations of success, weights attributed to positive and 0 outcomes and the objective frequency of such outcomes were investigated in a skill situation, i. e. a competition for the best student paper. It was found that: (1) expectations of success depended strongly on the objective frequency of prizes, (2) the best outcomes were weighted in agreement with predictions of the CPT model, but (3) the same was not true for the worst outcome, i. e. 0. The results, however, could not be easily generalised because the situation was constructed such that no negative outcomes were present and 0 outcome was always the most probable. To extend studies to lotteries with negative outcomes and wider range of probabilities an additional experiment was carried out. In Experiment 2 284 students made choices between 10 pairs of 5-outcome mixed lotteries. These lotteries were constructed such the absolute utilities (calculated from CPT) of positive and negative outcomes were equal, and positive and negative outcomes had the same probabilities of occurrence. According to CPT, such lotteries should be always rejected. because negative outcomes are weighted more heavily, yielding negative overall CPT values of the lotteries. The results, however, did not support such predictions – the acceptance rate was close to 1/ . In general, the binominal distribution of acceptance of gambles with negative CPT values might suggest that some people assign optimistic weights to outcomes, i. e. overweight probabilities of positive outcomes and underweight probabilities of negative outcomes. In particular, individual differences in dispositional optimism (measured with the LOT scale) can reinforce such tendency.
