Opis:
Can “political theatre” exist in today’s political climate? In the last few decades, our understanding of politics and theatre has undermined the basis on which prior generations of artists conceived of both politics and theatre. Caryl Churchill’s Drunk Enough to Say I Love You? sits at the intersection of critiques of dramatic theatre and new forms of post-dramatic, non-representational performance. The play tells the story of a man, Guy, who falls in love with a country, Sam, and critics have largely seen the play as an allegory for the “special relationship” between Britain and the United States. But while the play riffs on that metaphor, it also includes aspects that work against a political reading. Churchill’s depiction of the relationship as a sincere gay love affair raises questions about what it means to say that politicians are “in bed together.” As the play develops, the political critique and the personal relationships seem to work against each other, and the play becomes an elliptical invitation to think political theatre anew.

The purpose of this paper is to go beyond the usual scheme associated with Clausewitz, which narrows his life down to being a soldier and concentrates solely on his theory of war. By presenting his main methodological approach, the study examines the role of history in Clausewitz’s thinking and analyses how his historical studies tested and validated his evolving theoretical structure and how they could enable soldiers who had never fought or served as commanders to develop their battle intuition and enhance decision making process by learning from real world examples in times of peace.

The explosion of terrorists activities by Islamic radicals in north America, Europe and Asia in the 21st century evoked dismay, sadness and anger among the world community and the political leaders. Terrorism was almost continually front – page news and the subject of much discussion amongst politicians in the United Kingdom (UK). Moreover, Prime Minister Tony Blair’s words: “…we will not rest until this evil is driven from our world…” proved that the UK became a zone of fighting with international terrorism, even though it had connections to these strands well before these attacks.

Opis:
In the aftermath of 9/11, the United States declared a war on terrorism that would come to rely on legal memoranda to justify the surveillance, detention, and torture of “terrorists” held at the Guantánamo Bay Military Prison. Analyzing the language of these 2002 “Torture Memos,” this article contends that the memos discursively produced not only the racial formation of the terrorist but also the emergent figure of the “monster minority,” embodied by then-Deputy Assistant Attorney General, John Yoo. Defined in this essay as a patriotic, individualistic, and exceptional racialized subject who works on behalf of counterterrorism, the monster minority plays a central role in the legal construction of the terrorist precisely because of his exemplary status within US society. While Asian American studies explains the formation of the model minority that accounts for Yoo as a beneficiary of elite multicultural education, and post-9/11 studies of U.S. imperialism elucidate the formation of the terrorist-as-monster, this essay puts these fields in conversation to establish how Yoo’s particular brand of Asian American masculinity consolidates both the racialized enemy and the racialized agent of the US security state.

The article examines to what extend existing philosophy of law and especially natural law doctrine may be applied in the discourse on legitimization of a state fighting terrorism. Since the 9-11 attacks issues of extraordinary threats to public safety occur regularly in scientific discussions among ethics, sociologists, political scientists, security experts. This topic has also became visible in legal science, even in its most unworldly discipline which is philosophy of law. The article is intended to present general tendencies in legal discussions after 9-11 with special reference to aristotelic-tomistic tradition of understanding the notions of common good, the aim of a state and of law.

Opis:
Polityka zagraniczna USA i relacje z Europą przed atakami z 11 września. 2. Atak terrorystyczny i reakcja administracji Busha (Doktryna Busha) – odpowiedź Europy. 3. Kryzys we wzajemnych relacjach – wojna w Afganistanie i Iraku. 4. Nowe wyzwania dla partnerstwa transatlantyckiego.
The main aim of this article is a presentation of transatlantic relations in the times of G. W. Bush. By transatlantic relations I mean above all the influence of American president on political and ideological cooperation between The United States and Europe and their reciprocal contact with international environment. Transatlantic relations have a long history. Depending on the reigning president of The United States they have taken different shapes. Thanks to Transatlantic Declaration from 1990 the USA started a formal American-European Union dialogue under the reign of George H. W. Bush. However, it gained a serious political meaning as late as in 1995 with New Transatlantic Agenda signed in the times of Clinton’s administration. Mean-while, the events of year 2001 contributed to revolutionary changes in transatlantic partnership. Their consequences in reciprocal transatlantic relations have been experienced up to now. Consequently, the aim of this article is a presentation of mutual relations between the USA and Europe during the reign of G. W. Bush. In this work I would like also to describe the following issues: 1. Foreign policy of the USA and relations with Europe before the attacks from September 11. 2. Terroristic attack and the reaction of Bush’s administration (Bush Doctrine) – the Europe’s answer. 3. The crisis in reciprocal transatlantic relations – wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. 4. New challenges for transatlantic partnership.

War on Memorials in Catalonia. What to Do with Commemoration of the Battle of the Ebro The article discusses the conflicts taking place in public life over interpretation of the significance of places of national memory. The author presents them on the example of the dispute that arose in Spain over a memorial in the Catalan city of Tortosa. It commemorates the Battle of the Ebro, the military operation of the largest scale and consequences during the Spanish Civil War. The opponents of the memorial consider it as a testimony to the victory of Francoism and an unsightly and disgraceful element in the urban tissue. They appeal for its liquidation, while those arguing for its preservation and reinterpretation of the symbolic meaning treat it as an architecturally valuable distinguishing feature of the city. The fate of the controversial memorial does not rest solely in the hands of local authorities, but it has become a subject of political disagreement, disputes among residents and non-governmental activities. They are taking place against a background of the current legal basis of historical memory (Law 52/2007 of 26 December), which was developed by the political Left to compensate for the harm done to the victims of the Civil War and the Francoist dictatorship, and to implement changes in public space in connection with the traces of Francoism. However, its content leaves quite a big decision-making margin to the public authorities as to removing the traces of the regime from reinterpretation.

Opis:
In the article “Carl Schmitt Revisited by the United States and the Terrorist” it is shown that Carl Schmitt’s morals, standards and views can be noticed in the United States policy in the context of so-called “war on terror”. According to the article, Islamic terrorists are a mirror image of Schmittan revolutionary partisan. It is discussed how terrorists are, as a problem, treated by the USA, which in author’s opinion displays many Schmittan features. Schmitt is one of the few who claim that the sovereign state is above the legal order and can set boundaries. It is therefore shown that the USA seem to have rushed into Schmittan “state of exception”, where norms are suspended in order to achieve security, resembling the thinking of the G.W. Bush administration. It is illustrated how the USA seem to be following Schmitt’s ideology, especially by making exceptions to international rules, but also putting the terrorist outside of the scope of international regulations. Lastly, author tries to answer the question if it is justified to follow Schmitt and obey to the rule of law.

Opis:
The article describes the complicity of certain currents of feminism in reproducing Islamophobic discourse. It presents writers and politicians such as Azar Nafisi, Irshad Manji, or Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who depict Islam as essentially violent and oppressive to women. Such a vision is particularly convenient to conservatives; it also serves as a support for Western imperialist projects, like the war on terrorism or interventions carried out in the Middle East under the guise of establishing democracy. This support, however, remains, invisible to some Western feminists, such as Margaret Atwood or Susan Sontag, who accept this discourse uncritically. Indeed, the aforementioned writers and activists function as “ambassadors of Islamophobia,” which they seek to legitimize as “feminist” and “progressive.”

The article deals with the causes of Russia’s war on Ukraine, which is based on political and geopolitical interests, economic and military strategies, ambitions of individual political leaders, and mentality factors. The ontological basis of the war is the historically formed fundamental difference between the spiritual world, mentality traits of Ukrainians and Russians, which formed under the influence of a particular culture, with its ethnic, value and worldview coordinates, and under the influence of ideologies that determined the features of social and political life at different historical times. A strong spiritual system is created in the social and cultural space of the state, which preserves its values from generation to generation in the culture, forming a stable mentality and enduring attitudes. Their conceptual comprehension expands the context of cause-and-effect connections, helps to understand the situation more deeply and to choose optimal effective mechanisms for gradually successfully resolving the complex geopolitical situation that threatens the whole world.
