Opis:
Lymphoid enhancer-binding factor-1 (LEF-1), a member of the high mobility group (HMG) family of proteins, regulates expression of T-cell receptor-α gene and is one of the key regulatory molecules in the epithelial-mesenchymal interactions during embryonic development. Among others, LEF-1 regulates expression of cytokeratin genes involved in formation of hair follicles and the gene encoding the cell-adhesion molecule E-cadherin. Transcription factor LEF-1, which acts as a dimer, binds β-catenin and is involved in signal transduction by the wnt pathway. We have cloned and sequenced a novel isoform of human LEF-1 gene transcript. This isoform encodes a truncated protein devoid of HMG domain and nuclear localization signal but retaining β-catenin binding domain. This isoform might either act in a dominant-negative manner by interfering with native LEF-1, or might bind β-catenin in the cytosol, which would result in attenuation of the signals transmitted by theLEF-b-catenin pathway.

Opis:
This review addresses the need to evaluate the biological effects of novel foods, how this can be achieved and the role of animal models in this process. The selection of an appropriate model or combination of approaches is most important, together with an awareness of the shortcomings of that particular method. In mammals the gastrointestinal tract not only acts as the site of absorption of nutrients and non-nutrients, but provides a protective barrier between the environment and the body. As such this interface is exposed to relatively high concentrations of the individual chemicals that are dietary components. It is therefore essential to understand how novel foods can change the structure, growth and function of the gut in particular. Effects may be both beneficial and detrimental and have an impact on the function of other organs in the body. However, due to the wide-ranging implications of this broad topic, the discussion here will focus on events within the gastrointestinal tract, in the context of the evaluation of novel foods.

Opis:
The article attempts to analyze the role that in Bolesław Prus's Lalka is played by the tactile contact, that is one of the aspects of non-verbal communication. Considering the functions of this kind of message from the perspective of the interactive situations in which the protagonists of the novel take part, one pays a special attention to the emotions generated or expressed in this way. The novel contains signals documenting a number of episodes in which touch is involved, sometimes ones that are of significance to the plot and that almost always concentrate the attention of the protagonists who watch each other carefully. The text is an attempt at defining the role and function of the gestures of touching the partner's hand in an interactive situation, short and rare episodes of touching oneself, forced tactile contacts and substitute gestures – meeting the need of another person's intimacy. Determining the borders of the intimacy sphere touch becomes part of the relation between the protagonists, but also an element of a refined intrigue and flirt. Tactile contact is also sometimes taken as a peculiar sign of threat, and it is often associated with a closeness one does not want and with transgressing the existing social norms. The text also deals with the problem of the presence of an individual in a crowd. Tactile contact and breaking the interactive distance is sometimes a determinant of that presence. In Lalka a crowd is often a dangerous, strict community condemning an individual, and presence among others is connected with the feeling of loneliness and alienation. The article interprets Lalka as a record of yearning for understanding and experiencing intimacy, considering some tactile episodes as significant facts that are crucial for the plot of the novel.

The article is devoted to the real and to the novel Mincl family – the Lublin merchants and community workers. The author tries to show changes in social-economical reality in the second half of the 19th century, pointing to merchants as a characteristic example of these kinds of reality. The characters of Mincls also serve exemplification of the statement of the way the real “here” is changed into the novel “there”; how a real topographic point (Mincl's shop) becomes the mythical axis mundi. This also makes it possible to compare the realities of the 19th century Lublin and Warsaw with the world of Lalka.

An attempt at reconstruction of the cultural model of Polish positivism as a component of the paradigm of modernity is the subject of the study. It tries to describe the constitutive determinants of the positivist world view in which „the philosophical discourse of modernity” was evidently reflected. Polish positivism turned out to be an explication of fundamental, emancipation  ideas of modernity, mainly the ideas of civilization progress that determined the positivists' historiosophic thinking. The spirit of modernity was manifested in Polish positivism not only on the plane of „great narratives” legitimizing intellectual discourses of that time, but it also influenced the status of the conception of subjectivity that was obligatory in that epoch, a conception that was basically founded on the modern episteme.

Opis:
The article contains an analysis of the preserved fragments of Hecataeus of Abdera's work 'On the Hyperboreans' and a Polish translation of the most important ones. It seems that Hecataeus did not intend to depict an ideal of the pious and virtuous life in order to edify the reader. 'On the Hyperboreans' was not a utopia in the strict sense of the term. It was meant to be an entertaining novel describing a journey to a miraculous country. The writer probably did not imitate Pytheas of Massilia's work 'On the Ocean'. One should reject the hypothesis that Hecataeus' Hyperboreans were modeled on the Egyptians.

Opis:
The aim of the paper is to show the relationship between different aspects of time and the way they are built in the construction of a narrator’s identity. To highlight the cultural specific dimension of identity a book describing life in ninetieth century China has been chosen. The main heroine ofLisa Sees’s novel Snów Flower and the Secret Fan Lily is telling her life story and presents in a detailed way certain roles she has taken and the things she has had to suffer from (among them the painful footbinding) before she became who she is. The relationship between her and her laotong ‘the same’ is the core of the novel and is also vital for Lily’s self-identification. The ways in which the identity is con- structed out of cultural bound details is shown altogether with the features that make it universal no matter which culture representative they concem. The ąuestion of various types of womanhood is also vital for the paper. The elementary units proposed by Wierzbicka in relation to time are taken into consideration to describe the portrait of the novel’s heroine. The results of the analysis show that the category of NOW is of the greatest im- portance as far as identity issues are concemed.

Opis:
In Greek Novel as well as in the early periods of Greek literature are known descriptions of pictures made by painters or by other artists. This paper is concentrated mainly on the paintings that are the starting points Longus’ Daphnis and Chloe, and Achilles Tatius’ The Adventures of Leucippe and Cleitophon. A special attention is given to the beginning Heliodorus’ Aethiopica, where though the opening scene is not a description of a painting, nevertheless it is presented like a painting. Also other paintings are discussed which occur in the above mentioned novels. In conclusion, a stress is put on the novelty of Heliodorus who introduces to Greek novel a new way of using description of paintings, and different objects, and also creates scenes similar to paintings.

Opis:
According to the traditional understanding, the role of history in literary works was te- aching by example. History was expected to provide readers with ready formulae for appropriate behaviour, to introduce models to follow and to identify with, as well as to explain the difficulties of life. In the second half of the eighteenth century such an appro- ach to history tumed out to be inadeąuate. This article presents Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto - the first Gothic novel in English literaturę - as a work that subverts exemplary historicism by reversing the traditional exemplifying role of history. Published in 1764, when neoclassical ideals were still being promoted by such important writers as Doctor Samuel Johnson, Walpole’s novel commenced a new trend in literaturę that fully developed in Romanticism proper. It is not really intended to teach by example or to ren- der medieval history in terms of modem Enlightenment standards. Instead of rational explanations and balanced opinions its readers get an abundance of supematural pheno- mena and extravagant events. With its emphasis on entertainment rather than education, the story is a signum temporis, a significant step on the way towards the priority of aesthe- tic values in literary works. The article focuses on the novel in the context of its publica- tion in the Age of Reason. The two different prefaces are briefly analysed, and the chan- ging critical reception is presented. Some attention is also given to Clara Reeve’s The Old English Baron as an immediate successor of Walpole’s book, and simultaneously a strong criticism of his innovative perception of the role of literaturę. Despite the multitude of un- favourable comments by eighteenth-century writers and critics, the conclusion reached in this article is that such Gothic novels opened up a new perspective in the literary world. Walpole’s role as the forerunner in this field remains unquestionable.

Opis:
De Chirico’s novel Hebdomeros (1929) is deeply influenced by contemporary Surrealist theories. Imitating the metaphoric space of a library, the narration combines the two dimensions of interiors and exteriors. The hero himself, Hebdomeros, is a room with a window – a window which is the direct link with the external world. Inside, the erudition deriving from experience and memory; outside the contemporary life, with its solicitations and spontaneity. Life is, in De Chirico’s and his alter ego Hebdomeros’s mind, an intricate skein of enigmas, waiting to be interpreted. In order to accomplish the difficult task of interpretation, one has to compare Hebdomeros with other coeval surrealist novels: René Crevel’s Babylone (1927); Robert Desnos’s La Liberté ou l’amour! (1927); Georges Limbour’s L’Acteur du Lancashire (1923); Michel Leiris’s Le Point cardinal (1927); Breton’s Nadja (1928). De Chirico absorbed the deep sense of Surrealism: a man has to walk along an initiating path, guided by his thoughts and memories, with no other end than self-understanding

Opis:
After André Gide and Marcel Proust, Louis Guilloux is one of the first writers of the 20th century who rejects the 19th-century literary tradition, creating in 1935 an exceptional and innovative novel – Le Sang Noir. Its innovation resides in the similarity to the New Novel from the 50s on the level of composition, narration, organization of spatio-temporal setting, role of the reader and character construction. The article discusses the innovative character construction employed by Guilloux in the creation of Cripure, the protagonist. By means of the techniques of internal monologue and various points of view, the author created a protagonist with highly complex personality, impossible to be unambiguously characterized. An anonymous narrator, showing dualistic approach towards the protagonist, constantly shifts the points of view, rendering any description of the protagonist’s identity unfeasible as the information provided about him by the narrator and other characters is contrary. Guilloux uses elliptic constructions, enabling the reader to interpret characters’ conduct. However, the constructions do not reveal the motivation of their actions, but are limited to presenting events, citing characters’ statements and, above all, demonstrating their behavior. The reader has to fill the gaps and interpret characters’ conduct themselves. Two decades later, this “adventure of writing” rather than “writing of adventure” will become one of the fundamental principles of the New Novel.
