The sketch presents tabloid as a neutral, not laden by emotions (hence I renounce such terms as yellow paper, scandal sheet, or rag), manner by which to sell information and entertainment. Sometimes I use such terms as sensational press, but this concerns only some tabloids. I analyze how this form of communication in social reality influences the processes of the democratization of society (extension of the freedom of the individual), how it extends the concepts of public debate on democracy, understood here as a participation in political life and in matters that have a bearing on political life. Taking the stance of a representative of political sciences, historian of ideas, specialist in media, I analyze the genesis of the idea of tabloid and the characteristic elements of this press. I point only to some factors.

NEWS PROGRAMS
SENTENCE FRAGMENTS IN
Opis:
In this paper, the author reports on the follow-up to his earlier work on assessing the uses of sentence fragments in the nightly news programs of the major US television networks. In that earlier work ('Stylistyka' XI (2002), pp. 315-323), he had called attention to the very high incidence of sentence fragments, and of a particular kind of fragment, in the NBC newscasts. That particular kind of fragment is very similar grammatically to the absolute phrase (AKA absolute clause), and such fragments made up nearly half of the fragments in the transcripts he studied. In this follow-up report, he has studied the newscasts of the other two major news networks in the US -ABC and CBS-during the same time period, November 29-December 1, 2000. It turns out that the preference for the absolute phrase fragment style of NBC almost certainly constitutes a house style; the transcripts of the ABC and CBS broadcasts are not nearly as rich in fragments as the NBC transcripts are. In this report the author has also attempted to show the extent to which certain newsmen and women have used or not used such constructions in these broadcasts.

Opis:
Similar to Poland, Ukraine started itsmedia reform in early 90-s. However, different from Poland, media in Ukraine still did not become a true mediator between the authorities, the politicians and the society. This paper is a part of a bigger study 1 which purpose was to compare news framing in Polish and Ukrainian press in 2003 from the perspective of its possible impact on people’s engagement in public life. I traced the use of two news frames having a distinguished positive or negative impact on involvement, the attribution of responsibility and the powerlessness frame, in Ukrainian and Polish quality newspapers [Den’ and Dzerkalo Tyznia, Gazeta Wyborcza, Rzeczpospolita]. The paper concentrates on the Ukrainian media and analyses framing in the Ukrainian news. The results of the study presented here show that Polish newspapers more often enable citizens to participate in political decisions by critically scrutinizing the performance of their elected representatives in office. Different from them, Ukrainian news serve rather for concealment of the responsible policy-makers from public scrutiny, blurring the picture of political life and voicing public frustration with problems, which only contributes to the reproduction of people’s helplessness and passivity in public life.

Opis:
Mass media in the United States have historically evolved through three stages in which the content is aimed at the elites, then the masses, then specialized audiences. This evolution has recently been taking place within the news media, where Fox News is now being aimed at conservative viewers. The effect of the conservative content of Fox News on its viewership was examined. Findings from a survey show that Fox viewers are more polarized than other news consumers on several issues. Whether they watched Fox News or some other news program, however, the respondents consist- ently felt that the media were between good and fair in their coverage. Fox News viewers seem to be relatively satisfi ed with the news content they receive – or at least as satisfied as respondents who get their information from other sources.

This article discusses the development of election campaign communications in Sweden. The article analyzes whether political campaign communication in Sweden is heavily influenced by international trends, and if some distinctive national features still prevail. The mixture of liberal and social responsibility media system traditions in the Swedish society is used as a theoretical point of departure. Additionally, empirical data from the latest Swedish national elections on party communi- cation, media coverage and web communication are presented and new communication trends are analyzed.

The continual growth in the importance of commercial media, as proven by its growing share of the audience market, invites us to scrutinize the ways politics is mediated through these chan- nels. One may assume that the very essence of commercial activity influences the ways and forms of conducting political discourse by these media, and as a result influences the picture of politics. The aim of the article is to point out the shift away from traditional forms of political debates as well as the change in formula of covering political phenomena and events, and political processes by the media, and the specifics of the convergence of television genres, in which politics is present. The article will attempt a reconstruction of medial political reality, based on content analysis and the analysis of the forms of political discourse in commercial television, particularly in news programs using “Fakty”, broadcasted by TVN, as a case study.

The article presents the “Existential dimension of the Apostle Paul's kerygma”. In the beginning is a quoted definition of a Greek noun kérygma. The theological sense of this word and comes from its verb kerýssein means − to preaching the Good News about Jesus Christ. To announce the Gospel was a particular solicitude of the Apostolic Church, of Saint Paul. The Apostle introduced himself in Romans as: “Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God – the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures” (1, 1). The author of the article sets his sights on presenting a live force contained in kerygmat, which preached the Apostle of the Nations, as well as showing the source of the power of the Good News and the necessity of delivering it to all people in the world.

Opis:
The American talk show The O ’Reilly Factor premiered in 1996 on media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News Channel. Hosted by conservative commentator Bill O’Reilly (1949-), the Factor tackles social and political issues with guests from a variety of fields, and is the highest-rated cable news program in the United States, averaging approximately 3.5 million viewers a night. O’Reilly is the most controversial leader of a new wave of ultra-conservative media pundits that have appeared on Fox News over the last decade, who together have forged a new in-your-face reporting style that has garnered top ratings for the entire network. O’Reilly claims to uphold Fox’s motto of ‘Fair and Balanced’ coverage, and has labeled his own show the ‘no spin zone.’ Here he indulges in over-the-top denunciations of the ‘radical’ liberal establishment, promotes an anti-immigrant, anti-minority, anti-welfare and anti-abortion platform, and casts himself as the disgruntled voice of patriotic working-class Americans. Most distinctive is his interviewing style: in doing battle with liberal opponents he frequently resorts to the bellicose phrase ‘Shut up!’ among other invectives. Though such histrionics have earned him great fame, O’Reilly's reporting has come under considerable scrutiny from media watchdog groups such as Media Matters for America and Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR), both of which condemn him for extreme bias and inaccuracy. In addition, a 2007 study of The O 'Reilly Factor by the researchers at the Indiana University School of Journalism has concluded that the program regularly employs propaganda techniques defined by the Institute of Propaganda Analysis in the 1930s. This paper analyzes the provocative stylistic content of The O ’Reilly Factor, and examines the various criticisms the program and its host have so combatively drawn.

A framework for applying agenda-setting theory in an international news context is proposed. First-level agenda-setting would suggest that the more news coverage a nation receives, the more that nation will be viewed as being critically important to readers. Second-level agenda-setting meanwhile would suggest that the nature of the coverage, both attributes linked to a country and the tone of the coverage, would impact whether readers view the nation positively or negatively. The framework is employed through a content analysis of international news coverage in two Slovakian newspapers. The analysis shows the usefulness of the approach.
