    The 1980’s saw the emergence of New Historicist criticism, particularly through Stephen Greenblatt’s work. Its legacy remains influential, particularly on Shakespearean Studies. I wish to outline New Historicist methodological insights, comment on some of its criticisms and provide analytical comments on the changing approach to historical plays, asking “What has New Historicism brought into our understanding of historical plays and the way(s) of designing kingly power?” Examining Shakespeare’s second tetralogy, I will review Greenblatt’s contention that these plays largely focus on kingly power and its relationship to “subversion” and “containment”. I intend to focus on aspects of the plays that I believe have not received enough attention through New Historicism; particularly the design of the kingly figures.

    L’articolo presenta un’approfondita revisione del libro di James M. Bos Reconsidering the Date and the Provenance of the Book of Hosea. The Case for the Persian-Period Yehud, sullo sfondo del problema del neostoricismo negli studi biblici. Dopo aver tracciato una breve panoramica sul fenomeno del neostoricismo in generale (la sua genesi e il suo successivo sviluppo nel corso degli anni), viene discusso l’approccio di Bos in base al confronto con tali premesse ideologico-filosofiche. A tal proposito viene presentata in modo dettagliato l’intera struttura del libro di Bos, assieme alla valutazione critica dell’argomentazione da lui addotta. L’autore dell’articolo ritiene che l’approccio neostoricista alla Bibbia sia del tutto soggettivo e sbagliato, in quanto assolutizza un principio filosofico e non lascia spazio per caso, dubbio o fede. 
    The article presents an extended review of James M. Bos’s book Reconsidering the Date and the Provenance of the Book of Hosea. The Case for the Persian-Period Yehud, against the backdrop of the issue of the new historicism in biblical studies. After a brief overview of the phenomenon of this new historicism (its genesis and historical development), Bos’s approach is discussed from the point of view of its ideological-philosophical context. Then a detailed analysis of the entire structure of Bos’s book is presented, along with a critical assessment of his reasoning. The author of the article argues that the new historicist approach is completely subjective and wrong, as it absolutizes a philosophical principle without admitting the element of faith or any possibility of coincidence or doubt.

    Celem artykułu jest przeanalizowanie nawiązań do nauki i osiągnięć technicznych w utworze Alfreda Tennysona The Princess z 1847 roku. Świat przedstawiony w utworze obfituje w aluzje do dziewiętnastowiecznych odkryć geologicznych i do teorii ewolucji. Można w nim również znaleźć krótki wykład na temat powstania układu słonecznego z mgławicy gazowej Laplace’a. Skamieliny oraz dziewiętnastowieczne wynalazki techniczne są integralną częścią dwóch ogrodów przedstawionych w The Princess. Nauka i technika w utworze stanowią bogate źródło porównań i metafor, które pozwalają bohaterom lepiej zrozumieć nie tylko otaczający ich świat, ale i samych siebie.

    Artykuł stanowi próbę ponownego przyjrzenia się trzem pierwszym filmom Andrzeja Wajdy: Pokoleniu, Kanałowi oraz Popiołowi i diamentowi uwzględniając dokumenty archiwalne i materię produkcyjną w większym stopniu niż czynniki ściśle artystyczne i autorskie. Inspiracją są badania kultury produkcji oraz poetyka kulturowa Stephena Greenblatta. W efekcie tekst pokazuje jak wiele czynników pobocznych odgrywało decydującą rolę dla powstania danych tytułów oraz w jak wielkim stopniu filmy te były powiązane z ówczesnymi walkami o dominację kulturową. Tekst pokazuje w ten sposób wizję swoistego rozproszonego autorstwa, o mniejszym stopniu reżyserskiej kontroli względem powstającego dzieła, w również jego recepcji.
    The article is an attempt to examining again the three first movies of Andrzej Wajda: Generation, Canal and Diamonds and Ashes, regarding archival protocols and production issues more then strict artistic or auteur factors. The inspiration was both production culture perspective and New Historicism of Stephen Greenblatt. The text shows how many additional factors played decisive role in realising those classical movies and how much the movies were connected with plays for cultural power and dominance in those historical reality. In effect we can observe specific kind of dispersive authorship in which film authors hasn’t full control on the final effects of the movie, for example its social impact and audience reception.

    This paper uncovers new complexity for Shakespearean studies in examining three anecdotes overlooked in related historiography—the first Indian baptism in Britain, that of Peter Pope, in 1616, and its extrapolation in Victorian history as Calibanesque; the tale of Catherine Bengall, an Indian servant baptised in 1745 in London and left to bear an illegitimate child, before vanishing from Company records (like Virginia Woolf’s invention Judith Shakespeare vanishing in Shakespeare’s London); and the forgotten John Talbot Shakespear, a Company official in early nineteenth-century Bengal and descendant of William Shakespeare. I argue that the anecdotal links between Peter, Caliban, Catherine, Judith, Shakespear and Shakespeare should be seen as Jungian effects of non-causal “synchronic” reality or on lines of Benoit Mandelbrot’s conception of fractals (rough and self-regulating geometries of natural microforms). Although anecdotes and historemes get incorporated into historical establishmentarianism, seeing history in a framework of fractals fundamentally resists such appropriations. This poses new challenges for Shakespearean historiography, while underscoring distinctions between Shakespeareanism (sociological epiphenomena) and Shakespeare (the man himself).

    The article is an attempt to analyze the narrative and methodological techniques of new historicism. The basis for the analysis was Stephan Greenblatt’s book Will In the Word. How Shakespeare Became Shakespeare, especially because of of creating biographical and intercultural areas. The author of the analysis follows the relations between the truth of narration and historical truth and tries to determine the constituent elements of Hamlet’s author. The author of the analysis traced the relations between two truths: the truth of the historical time and the truth of the narrative time.

    The article examines the novel Echelon to Samarkand by Guzel Yakhina, dedicated to the Soviet past and the theme of «great hunger» of the early 1920s, which is interpreted as a collective trauma; analyzes the chronotope of the way, semantics of nomination of chapters structuring the development of the plot, architectonics of the novel; reveals the mindset to create a text that includes elements of myth, fairy tale, parable, which promotes author’s personal mythology and determined the meta-genre specifics of the novel-travelogue. The analysis of the text shows that Yakhina's novel expression demonstrates a personal perception of the historical background of the disappeared country, «new historicism» in the understanding of the Soviet civilization.
    Artykuł dotyczy powieści Guzel Jachiny Eszelon do Samarkandy poświęconej sowieckiej przeszłości i tematowi „wielkiego głodu” na początku lat 20., który interpretuje się jako zbiorową traumę. W analizie utworu uwzględniono chronotop drogi, semantykę nominacji rozdziałów, strukturyzację rozwoju fabuły, architekturę powieści. Przedstawiono też cel stworzenia tekstu, w którym elementy mitu, baśni, przypowieści przyczyniają się do stworzenia osobistej mitologii autora. Określono także metagatunkową specyfikę powieści podróżniczej. Z analizy tekstu wynika, że powieści Jachiny ukazują osobiste postrzeganie historycznej przeszłości nieistniejącego już kraju, „nowy historyzm” w objaśnieniu cywilizacji sowieckiej.
    В статье рассматривается роман Гузель Яхиной Эшелон на Самарканд, посвященный советскому прошлому и теме «большого голода» начала 1920-х годов, который осмысливается как коллективная травма; рассматривается хронотоп пути, семантика номинации глав, структурирующей развитие сюжета, архитектоника романа; выявляется установка на создание текста, включающего в себя элементы мифа, волшебной сказки, притчи, что способствует реализации персональной мифологии автора и определило метажанровую специфику романа-травелога. Проведенный анализ текста свидетельствует о том, что романное творчество Яхиной демонстрирует личностное восприятие исторического прошлого исчезнувшей страны, «новый историзм» в осмыслении советской цивилизации.
