Opis:
The paper presents one of the methods to determine the maximum vessel size allowed for the maneuver on tested sea area or harbour. This method is based on the Navi - Trainer PRO 5000 simulator by Transas Marine available to the authors at the Institute of Navigation and Hydrography of Naval Academy of Gdynia. In the paper was described the possible use of additional simulator software components to generate the necessary virtual sea area. The next stage of research work was making several tests based on the created virtual harbour. These simulations tests are carried out under variable weather conditions for various vessel sizes and maneuvering characteristics. The result of simulation test are very important for determine the parameters of the maximum vessel size and hydro-meteorological conditions allowing safe navigation.

The Portuguese Naval Academy is a military school with an university status and is equipped with one modern navigation and maneuvering simulator. The Navigation Simulator (NAVSIM) plays an essential role in the academic training for the Naval Academy and for its cadets, that are using this capacity since their first academic year as a learning tool. Identifying the non-technical skills that could be trained and focusing on the specific training of the technical skills is paramount, in order to maximize the training sessions for each cadet’s year. The assessment of statistical data referring to the last 6 years is important to identify where there are gaps in the exercises, as well as how the midshipman are prepared to perform functions of watch keeping on the ships fleet.

Opis:
Use of the ship maneuvering simulator (SMS) is at the core of pilot trainees education and training, so it is desirable to have an evaluation method that can be completed shortly after each berthing training session. There are basically two methods of docking maneuvering that pilot trainees learn: one in which the ship enters from outside the port and is berthed directly at the target quay, and a second method in which the vessel carries out a turn in front of the target quay before berthing. The authors suggested an evaluation index in a previous study concerning the first docking method. In the present study, the authors propose an evaluation method for the case of berthing the vessel using the turning maneuver. Since the index obtained by this method offers a single numerical benchmark, it is an easy–to‐understand result of the training exercise. The authors carried out experiments using a SMS and confirmed that the proposed evaluation method is effective and helpful to improve the effectiveness of SMS training.

Opis:
During the process of development of the Full Mission Bridge Simulator, I have come in to a conclusion that an important part of a successful learning process is the ability to train with a high fidelity bridge simulator. The Polar areas are harsh environments and to survive there, one must have special training and experience. This surviving means that the polar ecosystem will survive from pollution and the vessels and their crew from the bad judgments or misconduct of vessel operators. The most cost-effective way to improve special skills needed in the Polar waters is to include bridge simulator training to the Deck Officers requirements. In this paper I will introduce a real life situation in which an icebreaker assisting a merchant vessel gets into a “close call” situation and how this was handled. Maritime industry hasn’t studied much about the influence simulator training has to the navigators. Here the maritime industry could learn from aviation and medical industry, since they have done some extensive scientific studies to prove the need for simulators.

This paper presents initial results from a series of eye-tracking experiments on a Full Mission Bridge simulator. The aim of this research was to develop a stochastic model of a navigator’s attention distribution during their navigational watch. Such model could be used as a tool for workload and usability studies for navigators and navigational equipment interfaces. A structure of the model is discussed together with the evaluation of Markov chains as a main modelling tool. Initial results are presented and discussed. It is suggested that 1st order Markov chains are not fully applicable for this problem. A combination of the 1st and higher-order Markov chains will be applied in the next stage of research.

Opis:
The January 2009 issue of the Journal of Navigation included a paper (John Wilde Crosbie 2009) entitled, “Revisiting the lessons of the early steering and sailing rules for an e-navigation age.” Following a description of the development of the COLREGS from the early 19th century, he concluded that the current steering and sailing rules should be replaced by a single rule more suited to modern conditions. This might take the form of rule stating that a vessel taking action to avoid collision should not pass ahead of the other vessel. Such a rule would require a radical change in the philosophy of collision avoidance at sea, and evidence is required that it would be both effective and acceptable by mariners. Radar simulator experiments, conducted by the author some years ago, in another context, suggest that this might be the case. An analysis of the experimental results and some conclusions are reported in this paper. The author believes that further trials, specifically designed to test the Crosbie proposals, would be desirable.

One consideration required in the resolution concerning radar and automatic radar plotting aid (ARPA) equipment is the possibility of an automatic drift calculation being realized in the base of fixed target tracking. This information is very important to providing safe navigation, especially in restricted areas. This paper presents an analysis of the present regulations contained in IMO resolutions and the results of an experiment conducted in the ARPA simulator. The aim of the simulations was to verify the reliability of the information presented on the ARPA display and to determine the accuracy of the automatic drift calculation implemented in the simulator.

Developing new software components for ship bridges is challenging. Mostly due to high costs of testing these components in realistic environments. To reduce these costs the development process is divided into different stages. Whereas, the final test on a real ship bridge is the last step in this process. However, by dividing the development process into different stages new components have to be adapted to each stage individually. To improve the process we propose a mobile ship bridge system to fully support the development process from lab studies to tests in realistic environments. Our system allows developing new software components in the lab and setting it up on a ship bridge without interfering with the vesselʹs navigational systems. Therefore it is linked to a NaviBox to get necessary information such as GPS, AIS, compass, and radar information. Our system is embedded in LABSKAUS, a test bed for the safety assessment of new e‐Navigation systems.

Traversing the river Seine in Paris is challenging for inland vessels due to the density and diversity of local traffic that is encountered in a confined environment. The waterway authority, Voies navigables de France (VNF), commissioned a study to assess the relevance of the current regulations when vessels of varying types cross Paris. A first simulation study showed that regulations based on length only may be too restrictive for ships with smaller beams [1]. This paper presents additional simulations executed on a full mission bridge simulator with ships of reduced beam. The main bottlenecks happen at different locations depending on the ship’s beam and ships with smaller beam can sail at higher water levels than the ships considered in the first study. The maximum water levels for which safe passage is possible were determined for each ship. Finally, recommendations have been formulated, which were then discussed with VNF and stakeholders.

This paper presents a comparative analysis of manoeuvring patterns through the fairway which is marked with physical and virtual Aids to Navigation (AtoN). The impact of V-AtoN environment on decision-making and on consequent manoeuvres has never been studied in such a way. The results published in this paper were obtained using TRANSAS Navi Trainer 5000 and TRANSAS ECDIS 4000 simulators where 12 deck officers with at least 5 years of sea service participated. The results of the study indicate that there is a significant difference in manoeuvring patterns between the two environments. In case of virtual environment, more intense drift angles, ROTs as well as XTDs are observed. The paper demonstrates significant impact of virtual environment on behaviour of OOW.

This study investigates the challenges and opportunities of using cloud-based simulators for training in maritime education and training (MET). The aim is to map bachelor students’ use and perspectives to inform educational design when implementing cloud simulation into the curricula. This study uses an ethnographic design approach in the tradition of Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) and draws on video-recorded exercises and interviews (n=22) from 1st and 3rd-class maritime bachelor’s students engaged in navigation exercises on cloud simulation. The findings suggest that individual training with cloud-based simulators in MET can enhance the repetition of skills necessary for better performance in a full-mission simulator with current technology and rather straightforward instructional designs. However, the findings also emphasise that simulator exercises need to be more engaging for students in order to provide a meaningful learning experience. Hence, simulator software needs to provide the means for students to collaborate during exercises, and feedback provided by the system needs to be carefully aligned with the student’s previous knowledge in order to provide adequate scaffolding.

In the first example data form EGNOS was used to compare integrity parameters and the calculated position error. In further examples the simulated position with error and calculated integrity parameters were implemented together. The results were presented in two ways: with use of dedicated program which presents only ship contours (the one not covering GNSS uncertainty and the one covering this uncertainty called Marine Vessel Protection Area) and as a layer in existing ECDIS.
