Opis:
This paper aims to analyze selected mechanisms accompanying the processes of national revival in the Central Asian republics after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The idea is to investigate the authorities’ actions, which legitimized themselves by appealing to national issues and controlling the processes of building national consciousness. The paper also covers the changes in the nationalist narrative in Kazakhstan in the context of the war in Ukraine, showing the tensions over national identities and loyalties. Some Kazakhs supported Russian aggression against Ukraine, to the great disappointment of national patriots, which has sparked a debate about how the “us” vs. “them” division should be understood in the face of war and a possible threat from Russia. Some participants in the debate question the reliability of equating national identity with loyalty to the state. In doing so, they challenge the government’s primordial narrative, in which nationality legitimizes or naturalizes the current configuration of political power.

Opis:
The research purpose of the article is to analyse Jan Stanisław Bystroń’s research on collective imaginaries of one’s own people and strangers, on the basis of which he formulated an original perspective on the perception of nationalism. The research question is as follows: What is nationalism in the views of Bystroń? He was one of the first scholars to point out that nationalism boils down to the manipulation of collective imaginaries that are the source of prejudice. His National Megalomania (1924) can be considered a forerunner of research on stereotypes. The research purpose of the article is also to point out that his comments on national megalomania preceded the theories on collective narcissism formulated in the 1970s by Erich Fromm and Theodor W. Adorno. They are to this day analysed in scholarly literature, also in the context of research on nationalism. These analyses indicate that the source of narcissism is ressentiment. This concept of Friedrich Nietzsche is also used in theories about nationalism, so it was also included in the analysis of nationalism in this article. Bystroń’s research was interdisciplinary in nature, which allowed him to point out a new and, in many points, pioneering perspective on the perception of nationalism. Research on his work also requires an interdisciplinary approach. For this reason, the study uses references to theories from a wide spectrum of social and humanistic research. As a result, it was possible to interpret Bystroń’s contribution to the study of nationalisms from a broader perspective.
Badania Bystronia miały charakter interdyscyplinarny, dzięki czemu wskazał nową i w wielu punktach prekursorką perspektywę postrzegania nacjonalizmu. Badania nad jego twórczością też wymagają interdyscyplinarnego podejścia. Z tego względu w opracowaniu wykorzystano efekty badań naukowych z szerokiego spektrum nauk społecznych i humanistycznych. Dzięki temu udało się z szerszej perspektywy zinterpretować wkład Bystronia w badania nad nacjonalizmem.

Opis:
The article explores a possible connection between nationalism, capitalism, and nationalist movements’ common hostility towards environmental policies. It draws from materialist assertions about the capitalogenic nature of ecological degradation and modernist theories of nationalism, which explain it as a product or by-product of capitalist modernization. By employing theories of nationalism’s instrumentality in preserving the existing social hierarchies, the article proposes that this approach might be extrapolated onto socioecological hierarchies, which are contested or have their fundamental rules challenged by many environmental policies. Nationalism may then be seen as an instrument of capital – personified by the privileged elites – taking advantage of an ideology that appeals to those ‘left behind’ by modernization and globalization to thwart or delay changes to the socioecological status quo. An identity-based movement is thus utilized to protect the continuing exploitation and appropriation of nature. This proposed connection underscores the need for further empirical research, which is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of the topic and its potential impact on environmental policies.

The term “Balkanisation” is used in the description of unstable regions where actors of international relations (states and peoples) are most often in continuous and intractable conflicts. Why did the Balkans become the birthplace of this term? Why do the conflicts in the Balkans last and seem intractable in the long term? In searching for answers to these research questions, the author relies on the methods of discourse analysis (examining perceptions) and comparative analysis (comparing perceptions that are mutually opposed and irreconcilable). The theoretical framework of this research is based on a combination of theses of social constructivism (perceptions that shape ontological security) and structural realism (as perceptions materialise in certain foreign and security policies of states). The hypothesis being proven is as follows: conflict potential in the Balkans is determined by ontological factors that represent important factors of security perceptions of different nations and geopolitical conceptions of different states. As a result, different perceptions influence the formation of opposing geopolitical conceptions, which leads to continuous appearances of aspirations for a territorial reconfiguration of space and changing borders, which is why a high level of interstate and/or interethnic mistrust is maintained over a long period of time. The concluding remarks are devoted to the presentation of views on how there are several reasons for Balkanisation, since this process is influenced not only by Balkan actors, but also by non-Balkan actors (big and regional powers with their own perceptions and geopolitical conceptions). That is why the attempts to stabilise the region initiated during the previous century were generally short-lived and were limited in scope. The tangle of different perceptions and mutually irreconcilable geopolitical goals of Balkan and non-Balkan actors results in ongoing Balkanisation.

This article aims to analyze the phenomenon of populist neo-nationalism in Austria and answer the following research questions: 1. How can populism and its type of populist neo-nationalism be characterized?; 2. What are the determinants of populist neonationalism in Austria? 3. What are the ways populist neo-nationalism has been utilized in Austria? The Chantal Mouffe thesis was verified, according to which the development of populism is a response to the shortcomings of liberal and deliberative democracies. The research process used a methodology typical of the social sciences, especially the political sciences. Since the 1980s, we have addressed the growing importance of radical right-wing populism in European politics. Some researchers refer to this phenomenon as new populism or populist neo-nationalism. The party’s growing importance since 1986 was related, among other things, to the principles of Euroscepticism it proclaimed and its demands to limit or even ban immigration. The FPÖ’s achieved the most tremendous success under the government of Jörg Haider. Its entry into the ruling coalition has confused international relations.

Purpose: The primary aim of this article is to provide a comprehensive and indepth analysis of the Russian world (russkiy mir) as the main doctrine of neo-imperial expansionism. Russia consistently pursues the strategy of regaining influence in the post- Soviet area and, through the internationalization of the Russian world, seeks to achieve a dominant position on the European continent. The research problem is to analyze the extensive scope of influence of Russian ideology and the profound impact of this ideology on political and social processes taking place in other countries in Europe and the world. The impact through political and economic lobbying, propaganda, and informational operations of influence is extended not only to the area of the former USSR but also aimed at political circles and citizens of other European countries. Methods: The research optics adopted by the Author imply the use of the historical method of comparative and critical analysis of source texts. Result of the study: The analysis carried out leads to the conclusion that the ideology of the Russian world is expanding its sphere of influence mainly through propaganda and disinformation influence aimed at nationalist and Eurosceptic circles, including among representatives of the political elite of European countries identifying with such views.

The geopolitical location between Russia and Germany has historically determined Poland’s foreign policy, in which Ukraine has been given a privileged place. Polish policy-makers have perceived Ukrainian independence as the main barrier preventing the restoration of Russian imperial ambitions. Consequently, Poland has been unwavering in its commitment to supporting the Ukrainians in their resistance to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. This attitude was visible in Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki’s 2023 lecture at the University of Heidelberg. Nevertheless, relations between Ukraine and Poland and the current Russia-Ukraine conflict are far more complex than is mainly acknowledged. Behind Poland’s support, there is an unhealed wound of Ukrainian nationalism, which the current government in Ukraine does not want to unknowledge. The Ukrainian nationalist ideas, based on the slogan “Nation above all,” are very different from those of the Poles. Upon proper recognition of the multifaceted causes of war and the situation’s complexity, a cease-fire and a peaceful settlement of the Russia-Ukraine conflict could be achieved.

The article recalls a little-known episode in the history of European education, when in reaction to the trauma of the lost war in 1870, France, developing the ideology of Esprit de revanche (spirit of revenge), established the so-called “School battalions” in which children were trained in military practice, using weapons and shooting. The matter was treated so seriously that the mass production of fake weapons and uniforms was initiated and the best children’s units participated in parades on the national holiday, along with regular army formations. The “battalions” formed a particular group of French victims of World War I. The battalions also inspired imitators. The current political situation in Europe and the reassertion of nationalism that is obvious in this context make the history of the children’s army a particularly topical warning.

Syria is one of many countries in the Middle East diverse in terms of religion, nationality, and ethnicity. Internal divisions emerged when Syria reclaimed independence in 1946, but the differences inside Syrian society have become a taboo. One of the reasons for that was Arab nationalism, which claimed that they were all Arabs. The Syrian authorities managed to maintain the appearance of national homogeneity owing to these claims. This article aims to show the uniqueness of Arab nationalism, which is not characteristic of one country but of numerous states sharing a common past, language, and their citizens belonging to the family of the Arab nation. As a case study for Syria, this article analyses the basic concepts relevant to the subject (nationalism, the nation from the perspective of Islam, and Arab thought), the roots of pan-Arabism in Syria and its presence in the public and legal space. It also attempts to demonstrate that Arab nationalism helped the Syrian authorities (represented by the Alawite minority) blur national, ethnic, and religious differences and thus preserve the unity of society and state.

Adopting the discursive notion of populism, derived mainly from the works of Ernesto Laclau, the article explores the construction of identities in the discourse of the Brazilian far-right, which has former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro as its main representative. Arguing that Bolsonaro’s supporters (the people of Bolsonarism) are grounded in an articulation of meanings that, despite the nationalist tone, is constructed in a populist manner, the article demonstrates how these meanings relate to historical frameworks and permeate social relations at different levels, restoring old political and cultural traditions to create antagonisms that, in turn, result in a highly fragmented political identity of the people, condensed in the signifier of the “good citizen”. By pointing out the relevance of observing the cultural and historical elements of each case, the article sheds light on the role played by the mobilisation of negative affects in the processes of identification and construction of the people.

This article is a case study of the 2022 Lukov March and a counter-demonstration to this march. The Lukov March is an annual event organised in Sofia by the far-right Bulgarian National Union, and the so-called Anti-Lukov March is a counter-demonstration organised by, among others, the group called Feminist Mobilisations. The article is based on two years of research conducted while working on a co-authored master’s thesis, involving netnography, participant observation and narrative interviews with women who identify with feminist or far-right activism. The study aims to analyse both events and both groups in the context of performative activist actions in the urban space of Sofia, with a particular focus on the issue of the performative body and performance in social space. In our work, we use the method of critical discourse analysis and anthropological methods.
Artykuł stanowi studium przypadku Marszu Łukowa 2022 i kontrdemonstracji Mobilizacji Feministycznych. Marsz Łukowa to doroczne wydarzenie organizowane w Sofii przez skrajnie prawicową Bułgarską Unię Nacjonalistyczną, zaś tzw. Anty-Łukow to kontrdemonstracja organizowana m.in. przez ugrupowanie Mobilizacje Feministyczne.

According to the founding treaties, the European Union is based on the recognition of certain values: freedom, democracy, pluralism, diversity, and equality between women and men. Although existing data indicate that Polish society is generally supportive of the EU, recent discussions about Polexit and axiological conflicts within Polish society suggest that these values do not enjoy universal and unconditional support. We employed a mixed methods approach to analyze the attitudes of Poles towards the EU. Using quantitative methods, we identified key aspects of a radical Catholic-nationalistic orientation. Based on a qualitative investigation, we established that those with a radical axiological orientation who reject European values do not proclaim anti-Europeanism openly. An analysis of data from far-right actors’ social media provides a more precise understanding of the meanings and emotions associated with Europe and the European Union within radical Catholic-nationalist narratives. The most prominent feature of these narratives is the emphasis on the alleged “moral decline” of older European societies, along with the postulation of alternative forms of European integration that move away from cultural integration.

In Poland, like everywhere radicalization process begins in the heads but also begins online. It is like a viral disease which finds growth conditions in places affected by severe consequences of inflation, pandemic and the war in Ukraine. In our book we document the rapid growth of extreme attitudes. We pay attention to small, noisy, visible or hidden, dangerous groups that appear in many countries and threaten democracy. The majority of authors of the articles are interested in the process of radicalization, and therefore the sources of its dynamics, not radicalism as such. We understand the latter notion in the simplest possible way, as the use of symbolic and physical violence against other citizens and in public space. Most of the texts in this book are case studies, although the reader also find theoretical concepts. The authors of several articles participated in the Dialogue on Radicalization and Equality project, coordinated by the University of Manchester.
