Opis:
The research aimed at analysing the influence of the diesel oil temperature on the NOx emission level. The tests were carried out on a test stand equipped with a 9.5 kW multi-fuel compression-ignition engine. The setup constitutes an experimental cogeneration unit discharging the produced energy into the power grid. The measurements were carried out under the D1 test procedure provided by ISO 8178–4 for testing engines operating at a constant speed. As a result of statistical analysis of the results obtained, significant differences were found in the u specific values of the nitrogen oxides emission gained for particular phases of D1 tests, when the engine was fed with diesel fuel of different temperatures. The results obtained confirmed the possibility of limiting the specific emission of NOx only when the engine is running at 75% of its nominal torque. An increase in the NOx emissions was recorded for the remaining loads.

The impact of high levels of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) has been well documented to decrease fuel consumption and reduce emissions of spark ignition engines. But there are also many limitations associated with this technology like EGR control and tolerance, which can reduce the potential efficiency improvements. A new concept called D-EGR has been presented in which the exhaust from a sub group of power cylinders is channeled back to the intake of all the cylinders. In this literature review both experimental and numerical analysis of this technology is shown. In the former case experiments were performed on 2.0 L PFI engine with gasoline as a fuel in part and high load conditions and the results show that at part loads the D-EGR engine can lead to lower Brake Specific Fuel Consumption, lower HC and CO emissions and higher brake thermal efficiency. At high load operations the results show improved combustion stability and superior knock tolerance. In the numerical studies it shows comparable thermal efficiency with conventional spark ignition (SI) engines and reduction in NOX emissions.

Opis:
At diesel engines with fuel direct injection, the problems with toxic exhaust compounds concern mainly nitrogen oxides (NOx) and Particulate Matter (PM). For reduction of the NOx's, the exhaust gases are feedback to the combustion chamber. This results with a lower combustion temperature and decrease the emission of NOx gasses. The mass of the recirculated gases cannot be too high because it might lead to an increase in the PM emission. In nonroad vehicle engine the component responsible for the exhaust gases recirculation is most a two state (open/close) EGR Valve. Another problem in this type of combustion engines is volatility of its ecological parameters during exploitation. The reasons are various operation conditions of the engine, fuel quality ect. So, according to the proposed solutions, the engine controller must track these variations. The mass of recirculated gasses must also be corrected. In the proposed solution the EGR valve is a prototype construction of an electronically controlled EGR. The openness of the valve is freely programmable and is controlled by adaptive algorithm saved in the ECU (Electronic Control Unit). As feedback signal to control the openness of EGR valve is used an NOx sensor placed at engine outlet pipe. The paper describe an control circuit of EGR Valve and include research results of nonroad vehicle diesel emissions (NOx and PM missions). The proposed adaptive control of EGR Valve shows potential to reduce especially NOx emissions in aspect to fulfill further emission regulation TIER/Euro

Opis:
Multi-phase flow is one of the types of flow which is frequently observed in natural phenomena and engineering applications. Circulating fluidized beds constitute an important application of multi-phase flow. The combustion and emission behaviours in circulating fluidized beds are determined by hydrodynamic of bearing. The most appropriate combustion can be provided with the hydrodynamic structure of bearing, taking into account fuel and operating parameters. Therefore, the hydrodynamic structure of circulating fluidized beds should be displayed with mathematical/physical modelling and simulation approach for its analysis and synthesis. Mathematical analysis in today's conditions is very difficult or impossible because of excessive turbulence, unstable and two-phase flow characteristics of the bed. Therefore, the most effective way to do this is the use the physical modelling and simulation approach. In this study, 8 MW circulating fluidized bed hydrodynamic analysis are made by ANSYS-FLUENT R14 commercial CFD code and then combustion and emissions analysis are made with hydrodynamic analysis results. These analysis results show that combustion chamber exit mean NO_x emission was 38.5 ppm and combustion chamber exit mean temperature was 1123 K.

Opis:
The paper presents some results of examination of DF CI engine fuelled with kerosene-based fuel (Jet A-1) and propane. The aim was to obtain the maximum engine thermal and overall efficiency and checking the engine emissions for the application of significant share of propane as a main source of energy. The fuel which initiates the ignition was Jet A-1 provided by common rail system during the beginning of compression stroke. Propane was provided to inlet manifold in a gas phase. The method of providing of both fuels to the engine cylinder allowed to create nearly homogeneous mixture and realized HCCI process for dual fuelling with Jet A-1 and propane. It was possible to compare two combustion strategies PCCI and HCCI for fuelling of CI engine with single fuel (Jet A-1) and dual fuelling with Jet A-1 and propane. The results of experiment show that the NOx and soot emissions are much lower than for standard CI or SI engines. The results also show very interesting potential role of propane in control of HCCI dual fuel combustion process which gives the new perspective of dual fuel engine development. The low levels of toxic components in exhaust gases encourage to test and develop this type of fuelling which could radically confine the negative influence on the environment as well as enable to apply an alternative fuels.

Badania prowadzono w warunkach laboratoryjnych (testy stanowiskowe) w cyklach badawczych składających się z czterech faz. Zastosowano paliwo celowo zanieczyszczone chlorem.
In paper the impact of intentionally chlorine-contaminated fuel on nitrogen oxides emission control elements in compression engine was described. The quality of fuel used is of key importance for the failure-free operation of the engine. Fuel contamination can occur mainly at the transport or storage stage. The main attention was paid to the EGR heat exchanger, which is used for exhaust gases recirculation, being one of the ways to reduce the emission of harmful NOx. The tests were conducted under laboratory conditions (research engine stand tests) in cycles consisting of four phases. The fuel used was intentionally contaminated with chlorine. The test was interrupted after 250 hours at the engine failure and deposits appearance at the EGR heat exchanger. Test results of chemical composition of deposits, analytical methods used and sources and the cause of deposits appearance were described in present paper.

Opis:
Air pollution has become an important worldwide problem. The European Commission credits road and water transport as the major source of NOx pollution, and of being responsible for around 50% of the total air pollution in urban areas. In Poland, around 45% of the country NOx emissions are attributed to transportation. During the last decade, the use of SCR technologies have gained popularity as a method for NOx reduction, the technology is widely considered as one of the solutions for road transport emissions. SCR technology had previously been employed in stationary plants, maritime transportation and other installations using combustion processes in which exhaust conditions are easier to control. The advance on the technology led to the introduction of the first heavy-duty vehicle with an SCR system into the market in 2004. New technologies and applications are constantly appearing, for example, SCR exhaust gas cleaning systems for reciprocating engines are still under development and compression ignition engines can be found in a number of different applications. The technology still needs to be studied and improved as constant problems and knowledge is required in issues such as urea injection, crystallization and NOx reduction efficiency. Moreover, the designs intended for heavy duty vehicles need to meet vehicle limitations and EURO emissions restrictions. This paper presents a review of the different SCR system designs derived from the various factors and regulations in the automotive industry, which have influenced the technology, along with a parametric study of a proprietary SCR system for heavy-duty application.

W artykule omówiony został system selektywnej redukcji tlenków azotu w układzie oczyszczania spalin silnika o zapłonie samoczynnym, spełniającym limity normy emisji Euro VI i przeznaczonym do napędu pojazdów ciężarowych oraz autobusów.
The NOx emission aftertreatment of compressed ignition engines has always been a point of concern. The legislative emission limits for heavy duty vehicles constantly tighten the requirements for emissions of NOx. Nowadays it is believed that the most effective and reliable method of NOx reduction is a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system. The reducing agent of the system is ammonia, delivered and stored on a vehicle as Adblue, an aqueous urea solution. As all catalyst based clean-up systems, SCR activates only when a certain temperature is achieved. Nevertheless, once the system is started, the reduction efficiency of up to 99% can be achieved.

Opis:
Operation of marine diesel engines causes signifi cant emission of sulphur and nitrogen oxides. It was noticed worldwide and the regulations concerning harmful emissions were introduced. There were several solutions elaborated; however, emission control for both SOx and NOx requires two distinctive processes realized in separated devices, which is problematic due to limited space on ship board and high overall costs. Therefore, the electron beam flue gas treatment (EBFGT) process was adopted to ensure the abatement of the problem of marine diesel off-gases. This novel solution combines two main processes: fi rst the fl ue gas is irradiated with electron beam where NO and SO2 are oxidized; the second stage is wet scrubbing to remove both pollutants with high efficiency. Laboratory tests showed that this process could be effectively applied to remove SO2 and NOx from diesel engine off-gases. Different compositions of absorbing solution with three different oxidants (NaClO, NaClO2 and NaClO3) were tested. The highest NOx removal efficiency (>96%) was obtained when seawater-NaClO2-NaOH was used as scrubber solution at 10.9 kGy dose. The process was further tested in real maritime conditions at Riga shipyard, Latvia. More than 45% NOx was removed at a 5.5 kGy dose, corresponding to 4800 Nm3 /h off-gases arising from ship emission. The operation of the plant was the first case of examination of the hybrid electron beam technology in real conditions. Taking into account the experiment conditions, good agreement was obtained with laboratory tests. The results obtained in Riga shipyard provided valuable information for the application of this technology for control of large cargo ship emission.

This paper reviews the emissions of reactive nitrogen compounds (RNCs) from modern vehicles fitted with spark ignition engines and three-way catalysts. Specific aspects of the pollutants involved - and their formation - are discussed. Cold start driving cycles are scenarios under which emissions of all four RNCs can be significant; the mechanisms behind emissions trends are explored. Experimental data obtained from two vehicles tested over two different cold start driving cycles are presented and analysed. The use of gravimetric and molar metrics are explored. Ammonia, a species which is currently not regulated for passenger cars in any automotive market, is identified as forming the majority of the RNC emissions over the entire driving cycle. While ammonia emissions are strongly linked to aftertreatment system warmup and periods of high load, significant ammonia emissions were also measured under certain hot-running, low load conditions, and even at idle. For the majority of the duration of the test procedures employed, the RNC profile was dominated by ammonia, which accounted for between 69% and 86% of measured RNCs in the exhaust gas. Emissions are compared to the available legislative precedents (i.e. emissions limits currently in force in various jurisdictions). Finally, possibilities for control of exhaust emissions of currently unregulated RNCs are briefly discussed.

The NOx reduction of recent HD-vehicle is performed mostly by means of the selective catalytic reduction SCR. There are some manufactures and some applications of SCR as retrofit systems (mostly for the low emission zones LEZ and in combination with a DPF). In charge of Swiss authorities AFHB investigated several SCR-systems, or (DPF+SCR)-systems on HD-vehicles and proposed a simplified quality test procedure of those systems. This procedure can especially be useful for the admission of retrofit systems but it can also be helpful for the quality check of OEM-systems. In the present paper the test procedures will be described and some examples of specific results will be presented. As general conclusions it can be stated: – the foundations for the quality verification procedures of SCR-systems are established, – the SCR-systems are not active at lower temperatures < 200°C, – SCR-testing on vehicle is a simple & low-cost tool for quality check, – the overall average NOx reduction rate depends on the operating profile of the vehicle – for low-load, for cold operation and for interrupted operation (HEV) there are lower NOx reduction efficiencies.

The aim of this study was to determine possibilities of the soot and NOx emissions reduction from an existing heavy-duty compression-ignition (CI) engine based only on in-cylinder techniques. To that end numerical simulations of such processes as a multiphase fuel flow through injector nozzles, a liquid fuel jet breakup and evaporation, combustion and emissions formation were performed in AVL Fire 3D CFD software. The combustion process was calculated with the ECFM-3Z model and with the detailed n-heptane oxidation scheme that consisted of 76 species and 349 reactions. Both approaches of combustion modeling were validated against experimental data from the existing engine working under 75% and 100% loads. As for the reduction of the NOx emission an introduction of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) was investigated. As for the soot concentration reduction such measures as an increased rail pressure, application of a post-injection and an increased injector nozzles conicity were investigated. Finally the ECFM-3Z model with emissions models, as well as the n-heptane mechanism predicted that it is possible to reach specified emissions limits with application of EGR, post-injection and increased nozzles conicity.
