    The article elaborates on the debate that took place between 2008 and 2017 about, firstly,  the original assumptions of the Museum of the Second World War and, secondly, about its permanent exhibition. The author’s view is that the conflict results from different perceptions of Polish identity and patriotism. This is a conflict between the perception of the nation as an ethno-emotional community and the definition of the nation as a civil society. At the same time the debate takes place between those who support an affirmative attitude towards history, which makes them feel proud about their nation, and those who claim that the essence of history is to be critical about the past.
    W artykule omówiono dyskusję z lat 2008–2017 wywołaną początkowo przez wstępne założenia Muzeum II Wojny Światowej, a następnie przez samą ekspozycję. Autor stawia tezę, że spór ten wynika z różnicy postrzegania polskiej tożsamości i polskiego patriotyzmu, konfliktu między polskością rozumianą jako etniczno-emocjonalna wspólnota narodowa a państwową polskością obywatelską. Jest to też jednocześnie spór między zwolennikami historii afirmatywnej, wywołującej poczucie narodowej dumy, a tymi, którzy uważają, że istotą historii jest krytyczna refleksja nad przeszłością.

    Two stances of Polish historians present a nuanced methodological view of the socially controversial problem of the investment entitled the Museum of the Second World War. Building the museum, the discussions concerning the form of its permanent exhibition – apart from their ad hoc political context – touched on key issues for museology: the autonomy of cultural institutions, the authorial rights of the team preparing the exhibition, but most of all, the challenge posed by the attempt to present the various social expectations typical of communities with diverse historical sensitivities in the exhibition. The two stances presented continue this discussion which is being held on the basis of history and museology.
    Dwugłos dwóch polskich historyków prezentuje zniuansowane metodologicznie spojrzenia na żywy społecznie problem, jakim była inwestycja pn. Muzeum II Wojny Światowej w Gdańsku. Budowa tego muzeum, dyskusje o kształcie ekspozycji stałej – niezależnie od ich doraźnego politycznego kontekstu – dotykały kwestii dla muzealnictwa kluczowych: autonomii instytucji kultury, praw autorskich zespołu przygotowującego wystawę, ale przede wszystkim – wyzwania, jakim jest próba zaprezentowania na wystawie różnorodnych społecznych oczekiwań charakterystycznych dla zbiorowości o zróżnicowanych historycznych wrażliwościach. Prezentowany dwugłos jest tej dyskusji kontynuacją, prowadzoną na gruncie historii i muzeologii.

    This article aims to demonstrate the applicability of grounded theory in the analysis of the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk in terms of political science. The fundamental question is how to examine the sources which exhibit the ideological character of the space of public museums? In order to answer this question, the concepts by Kathy Charmaz and Adela Clarke are referred to, which have been noticed to offer unused potential for qualitative research conducted in the field of political science. This meant departing from the “classical” versions of grounded theory, created by Barney G. Glaser and Anselm L. Strauss, in favor of what is called “a postmodern turn,” and approaches which synthesize constructivism and social constructionism. Data obtained from primary and secondary sources concerning the main axis of the core exhibition were analyzed. The starting point was my own field research, the results of which were compared with the data from an interview with the museum’s architects and the transcription of a photograph. Inspired by procedures compliant with the non-classical versions of grounded theory, it was demonstrated that the main axis of the core exhibition was designed as a liberal manifesto of freedom. This determined the subject of analysis to be a part of the research field of political science. The spatial solutions applied testified to their designers’ intention to provide visitors with freedom of movement and assembly. They were considered as conceptual categories, related to the absence of a dedicated sightseeing route and the vastness of the space left for visitors. A comparative analysis of codes and categories, however, made it possible to identify yet another interpretative trope, related to the identification of freedom with alienation. In this way, “liberty” has become problematized.
    Celem tekstu jest wykazanie użyteczności teorii ugruntowanej w politologicznej analizie Muzeum II Wojny Światowej w Gdańsku. Pytanie podstawowe sprowadza się do tego, jak badać źródła świadczące o zideologizowaniu przestrzeni muzeum publicznego? Aby na nie odpowiedzieć odwołano się do koncepcji Kathy Charmaz i Adeli Clarke, dostrzegając w nich niewykorzystany potencjał dla badań jakościowych prowadzonych na gruncie nauk o polityce. Oznaczało to odejście od „klasycznych” wersji teorii ugruntowanej, stworzonych przez Barney’a G. Glasera i Anselma L. Straussa, na rzecz podejść uwzględniających tzw. zwrot postmodernistyczny oraz syntezujących konstruktywizm i konstrukcjonizm społeczny. Analizie poddano dane pozyskane ze źródeł pierwotnych i wtórnych, dotyczących osi głównej wystawy stałej. Punktem wyjścia były terenowe badania własne, których wyniki porównano z danymi z wywiadu z architektami muzeum oraz z transkrypcji fotografii. Inspirując się procedurami zgodnymi z nieklasycznymi wersjami teorii ugruntowanej wykazano, że oś główna wystawy stałej zaprojektowana została jako liberalny manifest wolności. Przesądziło to o przynależności przedmiotu analizy do pola badawczego politologii. Zastosowane rozwiązania przestrzenne stanowiły świadectwo woli twórców, aby zwiedzającym zapewnić swobodę przemieszczania i gromadzenia się. Uznano je za kategorie konceptualne, powiązane z brakiem dedykowanej trasy zwiedzania oraz ogromem przestrzeni będącej w dyspozycji zwiedzających. Analiza porównawcza kodów i kategorii doprowadziła jednak do wygenerowania jeszcze innego tropu interpretacyjnego, związanego z utożsamieniem wolności z alienacją. „Swoboda” uległa, tym samym, problematyzacji.

    The article discusses the transformation of Ukraine from a peripheral colony to a European nation-state. It examines changes in the interpretation of UkrainianRussian relations in historiography, public perceptions, and museum exhibitions related to the ongoing war. It demonstrates that since 24 February 2022, Ukraine’s politics of memory has exclusively followed a continuously expanding anti-colonial perspective. The article highlights a shift in Ukrainian society’s view of its past, with growing interest in the country’s history and a move away from the Soviet perspective. Museums are crucial in shaping these narrative changes and fostering Ukrainian national identity. The article also explores societal transformations since 1991, showing an increased identification with the state and a gradual distancing from Russia. This is accompanied by a westward turn in geopolitical orientation and a desire to join the European Union. The National Museum of History of Ukraine in the Second World War in Kyiv serves as an example of these processes, reflecting a nuanced portrayal of the war and of its human dimension. The museum’s commitment can be seen as a pillar of a nation-state building project, with symbolic identification shifting from the East to the West, towards the EU and NATO.

    The author analyzes the narrative of the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk using the category of moral capital, which is defined as a supply of moral stories influencing the moral status of the collective entity described as perpetrator or victim of a given event. The author considers that the decision, in 2008, to create the museum was one of the most important initiatives of Polish historical policy. From the beginning, the idea of the museum was the source of disputes, primarily concerning the shape of the Polish narrative about the war. Discussions on the subject and divisions in the political scene led to a spectacular “takeover” of the museum shortly after its opening in 2017. The management was changed and numerous alterations to the main exhibitions were made. The first version of the exhibition stressed the universalism of the experiences of civilians, including Poles, as victims of war-time terror, poverty, fear, occupation, forced labor, or extermination. After analyzing the narrative content of the exhibition opened in March 2019, the author of the article claims that in the modified version we can observe the (re)construction of a heroic narrative, aimed at reinforcing the moral capital of Poles.

    This article contains the findings of a study of the narrative of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War in Kiev as a form of contemporary realization of a historical policy. In independent Ukraine, the Museum departed from the Soviet heroic-romantic narrative and replaced it with a story of war as a universal human cataclysm. At the same time, there was a clear Ukrainization of the narrative, for the pragmatic purpose of building a nation state. Simultaneously, the Museum is engaged in commemorative and propaganda activities concerning the ongoing war with Russia.The author decodes the palimpsest of symbols and narratives. He analyzes forms of remembrance, the organization of exhibitions, and ways of managing the Soviet heritage and symbolism. He analyzes the narrative about the war in Donbass in categories of familiarity and otherness.
