Multiculturalism
Opis:
The paper presents a synthesis of multiple topics and issues of problems of multiculturalism under conditions of globalization and European integration. The carrier of the term 'multiculturalism' is shortly reminded here, with its way from the vocabulary of political correctness to a theoretical term and a special key of interpreting changes in culture of Western world. There are two main contexts of using the notion 'multiculturalism': first, making the Other equal, Western culture tends to deprivation of itself; and second, it makes a therapy of itself in this way, reminding fundaments of the whole Western culture.

In the era of globalisation, the notion of multiculturalism is encountered more and more often. Today, we often hear about migrations, as well as the functioning of an ethnic or racial diversified population within one territory. However, these are not the only determinants of a multicultural society. Nevertheless, in order to comprehend what multiculturalism really is, the identification of this notion and its essence should be carried out. This issues are particularly interesting due to the fact that there are more and more societies in which diversity has become widespread. This publication is an attempt to explain the concept of multiculturalism and present its essence in the contemporary world.

Opis:
In the past centuries, Gypsies, today known as the Romani people, contributed to the multiculturalism of societies, mostly in Central and Eastern Europe. With the passing of time, owing to the activities of national administrative authorities, this multiculturalism was limited. Te activities which were undertaken not only aimed at the assimilation of Gypsies but they also pertained to other minorities. Te change in the attitude to others occurred in the second part of the 20th century when the idea of multiculturalism emerged in the West. In this paper, three types of multiculturalism, referring to the real conditions of various societies, have been distinguished and characterised. Tese are: natural multiculturalism, rational multiculturalism and celebrated multiculturalism. Multiculturalism which is propagated at present is celebrated multiculturalism. It focuses on the rights of an individual and not on the rights of a group and it has little in common with natural multiculturalism which allowed an individual to fully participate in minority culture and respected the co-existence of diferent cultures in society. In the light of the assumptions, Programme for the Romani community in Poland aims at integrating the Romani people into modern Polish society. As emerges from the analyses, it can contribute to the mobility of particular Romani people within society and – at the same time – it can endanger the maintenance of Romani identity.

Opis:
For the last decade there are characteristic two processes, which are mutually supplemented but directed on a miscellaneous: globalization process and the process of division, individualization. These processes play an important role not only in global economy, but also in everyday life. We collide with increasing amount of opinions, values, and methods of activity organizations. In a context of two complementary processes - globalization and division, the problems of cultures variety and identity are considered. The problem of mutual understanding and dialogue between the cultures becomes acuteness in modern conditions of development. In the society, where the problem of cultures variety is not just the academic problem, but requires decision in everyday life, becomes ripe a question: is that possible to consider non-European cultures equal to European? What are the criterions of an estimation of culture equivalence, by what parameters is it possible to estimate? Certainly the parameter of tolerance to the differences belongs to the strongest parameters, and we consider our culture mature, because it tolerantly concerns differences, but those representatives of our culture, that don't do that we consider as barbarians. The world is doomed for cultures variety which is a great gift for all of us. This term has a lot of measurements and forms of contacts between cultures, that that conducts to creation of absolutely new culture. Variety cultures pawn the tolerance first of all for variety-ethnic societies, so the possibility of dialogue, necessity of mutual trust creation, as a basis of global society creation. Only the joint activity makes some chances for the global problems resolving, and it is possible in borders of historical integration of Europe, including liquidation of division on "two Europe" - western and eastern.

Opis:
The aim of this article is presentation the problem of protection of multiculturalism in the European Union after its enlargement. There are two aspects of the issue: protection of cultural diversity within one community and within the space of the EU. The first part refers to the Polish and foreign regulations connected with the problem of protection of cultural pluralism. Special attention is paid to the rules of the Polish Constitution from 2nd April 1997 concerning to the liberty of conscience and religion. In addition, Austrian, German and French constitutional solutions referring to the liberty of religion are shortly presented. The second part of this article is presentation the EU programmes Culture 2000, MEDIA Plus and eContent. Analysis of these programmes shows that they promote the cultural diversity in Europe, which results from the cultural policy of the UE. In this context, it must be emphasized that article 151 part 4 of the consolidate version of the Treaty establishing the European Community states that the Community shall respect the diversity of its cultures. The EU programmes give the great opportunity to participate in the formation of the cultural policy of the EuropeanUnion. It is particularly important for Poland which should actively participate in these programmes. In conclusion, the author ascertains that the liberty of settling down in the EU inserts new norms and values into national cultures. Therefore, national minorities must have lawfully guaranteed the right to preserve their own religion, mother tongue and tradition. It must be stressed that this right is very well protected by Polish constitutional regulations. At the same time, the cultural policy of the European Union intends to encourage development of national cultures and promotion of inter-cultural dialogue. Consequently, one cannot agree with the statement that the process of integration of Europe will annihilate the cultural diversity in Europe. In particular, the entry of Poland to the European Union will not destroy Polish cultural identity. The EU s money will afford possibilities for quicker than ever development of Polish culture.

One of the main problems associated with the phenomenon of multiculturalism of modern society is the question of intercultural education and its role in preparing secondary school graduates and employees to work and coexist in a multicultural environment. A particularly important aspect of its activities is in the sphere of the development of appropriate human attitudes and cultural and legal awareness, as well as respect for the standards and the rules of social interaction arising from cultural diversity. Developing intercultural competence including improving knowledge, developing skills and attitudes regarding relationships and human functioning in a culturally diverse society is therefore an important area of activity in schools, universities and centres of postgraduate education. The aim of this paper is to discuss issues related to multicultural societies and the challenges for education and lifelong learning that result from the phenomenon of multiculturalism.

Opis:
Today’s world is undergoing many processes of global significance. The most important of them are globalization and metropolisation causing, among others, an increase in the number of migrations and the contemporary nomadism. There is a number of reasons why migrations occur, the primary ones including the enormous variation in the level of civilization development that can be observed in various parts of the world. A tangible result of contemporary migrations is the ethnic and cultural diversity of many social spaces, some of which eventually become multicultural. Multicultural spaces are by no means a novel phenomenon, yet they are undergoing a great revival. There are currently two countries whose policies are based on the formally embraced principles of multiculturalism: Canada and Australia. Multiculturalism is a big challenge for today’s world and the example of Canada will be used in this article to show its social complexity.

Wielokulturowość
Opis:
Australian multiculturalism - a policy strategy aimed at facilitating effective social integration of non-British immigrants and managing cultural diversity - was devised in the 1950s and 60s, and adopted as government policy in the 1970s. As a number of recent publications in the European and Australian media suggest, this form of multiculturalism has been misunderstood and confused with ethnic pluralism and assimilationist, ‘melting pot’ approaches. These confusions seem particularly widespread in Europe. This is hardly surprising considering the scarcity of public clarifications of what multiculturalism is, the strong political backlash against uncontrolled migrations, and the paucity of informed debate about long term strategies of migrant settlement and adaptation. The paper outlines the principles of Australian multiculturalism, identifies its theoretical foundations, and highlights some of the widespread confusions about its meaning, focus and objectives.

UNITED KINGDOM
Opis:
As multiculturalism in the United Kingdom passes to a ‘post’ phase of existence, at least in academic and political discourse, it is important to consider the lingering impact of over fifty years of its presence in the form of Race Relations and integration measures. This article aims at a critical reassessment of the overarching strategies that have developed over the last half-century in relation to the integration of immigrants by putting the legacy of British multiculturalism into a firm historical and socio-political context; by marrying immigration and integration policies with normative models of integration in the hope of drawing a certain causality between them; and finally by highlighting the changes that have taken shape amidst the continuity of certain shared principles or frames of reference. The first part of the article looks at immigration and integration policies in Britain through a historical perspective; the second section delves into the concept of integration itself and its complex manifestations in British politics and policies; finally, a critical review of the development of these policies and their 21st century manifestations and outcomes are discussed in the third section. The analysis shows that the United Kingdom has, over the last decade, seen an ever-stronger intertwining of immigration and integration policies towards a robust civic integration approach, made evident in the introduction of citizenship and language testing schemes and strict pre-conditions on entry. Meanwhile, the turn in anti-discrimination legislation has been rather subtler. It has extended its reach to other areas of inequality, focusing on more pressing, or less contentious minority group support, such as women and LGBT rights, whilst retaining a measure of ethnic and national minority protection.

The aim of the article is to present the theoretical framework used to prepare and realisation the research “Celebrating the creation and propagation of brands (national, local, regional) in local communities”. From the perspective of that research, the most important theoretical categories are: cultural diversity, multiculturalism and borderland. The analysis is primarily intended to show the extent to which multiculturalism can be treated as an important context for the creation of territorial brands in borderland communities. It requires a critical look at the sociological and social use of this category. The relation between multiculturalism and social relations on the borderlands is very complex and non-obvious. Therefore, the problem of forms of the presence of multiculturalism on the borderland is the second issue raised in the analysis. That means that not every understanding of multiculturalism, and not every aspect of its broad understanding, is treated as applicable to describe cultural relations on the borderland. The third part of the article – referring to the empirical material from the research – tries to show the locally observed use of multiculturalism.

The discourse on tolerance began over two centuries ago and yet is still unfinished. Was Voltaire in 1763 with his “Treatise on Tolerance”, condemned religious intolerance persuaded by religious fanaticism of the judgment of the Court of Toulouse. Although the idea of tolerance was born in Europe, it saw and still sees intolerance. Intolerance of yesterday reminds us wars, inquisitions and crusades, instead the modern Europe shows that even between globalization and multiculturalism often proves incapable of “import” different cultures. But from the legal point of view the term tolerance is far from that of secularism. It follows that individuals in a system that tolerates doesn’t enjoy equality their fundamental rights, because they are not legally placed on the same level. Legal Italian tolerance experience has been for many years a condition for the cults other than Catholic. The Albertine Statute in 1848 welcomed it in the article 1, and it was the task of the new Constitution outlining the principles of a State not only secular but also pluralistic.

Zamenhof was one of the few thinkers who noticed the impossibility of a just dispensation between ethnicities and religions in the Russian Empire. He aspired to present a social system where national actions could run in the most natural way and where no one has the right to rule on behalf of the nation. In Zamenhof ’s opinion multiculturalism composed of different ethnical groups inhabiting the same territory is a social phenomenon just as a class system. However, if class system relates to social antagonisms in the matter of possession, then ethnicity is the most important element of segmentation where neither ownership, class nor political criteria are distinctive as ethnicity is a natural and culturally established social bond. Zamenhof rejected all political Jewish programs of his age and created his own program called Hillelism (which was directed at Jews and which he later abandoned) which after modification was renamed as Humanitarianism. Precisely this proposition has many common characteristics with multiculturalism avant la letter.

Opis:
Szczególną wtedy rolę odgrywały środowiska intelektualne i polityczne Kanady i Australii, państw jednoznacznie deklarujących gotowość do konsekwentnej realizacji polityki wielokulturowości. Porażka ideologii asymilacyjnych w USA przyczyniła się do powstania wielu publikacji dotyczących wielokulturowości. Wielokulturowość ma wiele wymiarów, a dwa z nich opisał Janusz Mucha. Pierwszy to wielokulturowość etniczna, czyli identyfikacja oparta na cechach wynikających z dziedzi- ctwa przeszłości, a drugi – nieetniczna, stanowiącą rezultat demokratyzacji życia społecznego.
The contemporary debate on multiculturalism began at the beginning of the 1970s, but only on the territory of Canada and Australia. The failure of assimilation ideologies in the USA was the major cause of publication of many papers on multiculturalism, which was perceived as a panacea to any ethnic and cultural issues. Contemporary multiculturalism has many faces, two of which were described by in Janusz Mucha. He distinguishes the ethnic multiculturalism, namely the identification based on characteristics derived from historical heritage, and the non-ethnic one, resulting from democratization of social life. Similarly, Stanley Fish proposes a division into strong multiculturalism and boutique multiculturalism, the latter being characterized by its superficial or cosmetic relationship to the object of its affection. Acceptance of two different ways of understanding multiculturalism makes us realize that it is becoming more and more pervasive. Relations and interference of different traditions, patterns, ways of thinking and attitudes towards the world, God and other people have become something inevitable and irrevocable in contemporary reality.

The symbolic imaginary of counterculture was fostered by dissent towards the cultural roots of the Western world, by a challenge to traditional norms, values and symbols, and by the rejection of historical identity and national sovereignty. This article aims to discuss some of the aftermaths of the counterculture of the 1960s as resulting from the transformations of its symbolic imaginary. The transformation of the symbolic imaginary of the counterculture is reflected in specific historical changes which had a profound impact on social relations, manners of perceiving or experiencing the world, and the shape of the public sphere within modern society. The dissent of the 1960s is framed in terms of its ability to take over and impose symbolic power, along with transformations of a given cultural model, a process which has roots in the concept of historicity and a new symbolic universe. Special attention is given to the institutionalization of multiculturalism, one of the most important outcomes of the transformation of the symbolic imaginary of counterculture and the normalization of countercultural radicalism. The aftermaths of the radicalism of the 1960s, when presented against the background of the transformation of the symbolic imaginary, underscore a ubiquitous and profound transformation of the entire culture and ideological dynamics in Western societies.

The aim of the presented paper is to show the history of the development of research on social minorities in the environment of Bialystok sociologists. This research center, located on the north-eastern borderland of Poland, was one of the first in Poland to develop research in the field of borderland sociology. With time, the research subject has been expanded, from the analysis of the assimilation of the Belarusian minority to the contemporary face of the idea of a multicultural society, discussing not only nationality, religiosity, but also non-heteronormities.

A young Chinese immigrant’s aversion to his Chinese origin and his self-identifi cation as purely American gives much food for thought to the author: Whoand what American edu-cation has been aiming to educate its students to be and what is impeding multiculturalism from being cultivated in education. The article points out that American schools have long been serving to Americanize its immigrant population regardless of where they are originally from, ethnically, linguistically, culturally, and religiously, and in spite of the country’s long--standing and ever-growing diversity. Without challenging the structural inequality inherent in “assimilation”, true multiculturalism will not be realized in education.

In my work the sociological perspective is accompanied with pedagogical one. I point out that aesthetics may be considered as space for identity formation. While analysing multicultural aesthetics in Polish public discourse, I focus on several phenomena. First, I describe invisibility of multicultural aesthetics in art discourse, as well as in educational discourse, and analyse the representations of multicultural aesthetics. I reconstruct the discourse of superiority of The Global North civilisation, and a parallel discourse of primitivism of the Global South. Next, I describe the proces ses of commercialisation and folklorization of multicultural aesthetics occurring in public sphere, especially in mass culture. Finally I reconstruct types of identities formed in the analysed material. The papers concludes with reference to Edward Said's demand for a constant critical reading o f culture.

The Katowice conurbation took shape from the end of the 18th century in the borderlands of two states, Poland and Germany. In this sense, it was an area on both their peripheries. Permanent and dynamic interactions between different national-ethnic groups resulted in cultural intermingling. From the middle of the twentieth century, this complex settlement system was already at the centre of socio-economic development on a supra-regional scale. As a result of multidirectional migration, influenced by intensive industrialisation, social relations evolved between the migrants and the local (indigenous) population, as well as between the migrants themselves. The aim of this paper is to analyse the early multicultural nature of selected cities in the Katowice conurbation against a methodological and terminological background and to indicate the extent to which this feature might be an asset in present day socio-economic transformations in this area. The temporal and spatial overlapping of various origins of socio-cultural links and relations leads the authors to formulate the concepts of cultural genotype and primary and secondary cultural genotype, and to exemplify the formation of cultural genotypes in the Katowice conurbation.

The article presents the author’s considerations relating to the current and common problem of multiculturalism. Nowadays “multiculturalism” can be defined as co-existence – in the determined physical, social and political sphere as well as in a concrete historical period of time – of many ethnic groups representing different axiological and normative systems. The social created by multiplicity of ethnic groups is very often a result of migration processes which totally formed such states as Canada or Australia. The sources of the European multiculturalism were, on the one hand, the officially accepted workforce as Federal Republic of Germany, on the other one – immigration being the effect of the colonial past of such states as France, Holland or Britain. All these countries took up more or less advanced actions towards being able to deal with the deepening ethnic diversification. There appeared political project – multiculturalism.

Opis:
Diaspora commonly refers to different kinds of migrant groups who have left their homeland but who continue to share a religious, ethno-national, or national identity. Since the mid-1980s, and through the 1990s, diaspora has expanded in meaning, to include more groups of people and placing more importance to the non-center and hybridity as central to diasporic identities. Asylum-seekers, refugees, exiles, forced migrants, immigrants, expatriates, guest workers, trading communities, and ethnic communities of various kinds, have come to be described as in diaspora or as tokens of a single diaspora. Some scholars have tried to retain a sense of consistency to a word, described as stretched to the point of potential irrelevance. The inequities of a liberal multiculturalism arise not from its weak commitment to difference but from its even stronger vision of national cohesion. Multicultural ideologies thus serve to reinforce liberal regimes through which nostalgia for an authentic past becomes an important driving force behind the construction of citizenship and political subjectivity.

In the course of the analysis carried out, the following questions, among others, were asked: into which concepts of cultural processes does the reporting on migrants from Poland in Germany in the context of culture inscribe itself; how are they constructed discursively; which discursive strategies and which aspects of cultural and migration policy do they reveal? The article presents the central results of the analysis and discusses the selected visible and invisible logics of the German press discourse in the context of migration and culture.

The main goal of the article is to show the possible ways of thinking about the relation between multiculturalism and liberal democracy. Author of the article tries to present some troubles with reconciliation of such political culture and elements of multicultural ideology which supports rights of member of foreign (nonwestern) communities to manifest their cultural convictions freely. In his opinion that would be a little bit naïve to think that all elements of political culture connected with liberal democracy can be accepted by members of the communities in questions. That is why he articulates the thesis that some conflicts between them and people faithful to the ideas of liberal democracy are inevitable and that it cannot be found possible solution of these conflicts which can be gladly accepted by all sides. Someone will have to give up some parts of cultural heritage of a given community if we are supposed to live in peace together. Although the author of the article believes that this resignation should not be limited to only one side of the potential conflict he argues that a political culture of liberal democracy is so precious that its defenders should not abandon it for the sake of ideas of multicultural society even if this brings about some pain on the side of their interlocutors.

It is reflected, among other things, in the megatrends of the 21st century, one of the most significant of which is the drive towards the transition from mono- to multiculturalism. Against such a background the contemporary issues of cultural linguistics and communication are outlined. The main thesis of the paper is that intercultural foreign communication is not a simple transfer of the knowledge of a new culture, but it consists in developing abilities to understand it, to combat prejudice and negative stereotypes with reference to one’s own culture, as well as to the foreign one which is being acquired.

They are tales with appended commentaries in the form of conversations between the authoress and the therapist. Already in her debut novel ‘The fairytale is life’, Suchowierska tackles several difficult subjects and poses important questions such as : how can one see the world?; how to be free?; how to find the essence of things? In ‘Prince the Snow-White”, written a few years later, those questions take on the form of reflection on the woman’s cultural condition. The volume contains new versions of traditional fairytales in which men and women switch their roles. This simple gambit lays bare the power of gender stereotypes and manifests the degree to which contemporary culture allows (or disallows) women to do attractive/enjoyable things traditionally reserved for men only. The third book penned by Suchowierska ‘Mat and the world’ was published in 2015. In as much as the potential target readers of her tales are either young people or adults, the last book is dedicated to still younger readers. It tells the story of a plush teddy-bear, manufactured in China, which, due to a curious twist of circumstances, travels around the world. The bear’s journey becomes a pretext for revealing social inequities as well as presenting different cultures and religions. Mat, the bear, is characterized by optimism, activity and self-control in times of crisis. The propagated attitudes and models of upbringing presented in the story are no truisms. The little volume was awarded The Book of 2015 Literary Prize of the Polish section of IBBY.

What happens when people of different cultures, values, religion live together? Sociological studies on immigrative phenomenon often swing between immigration and integration policies. These policies actually reveal the difficulty of the host society to institutionalize new models of social differences accompanying multiculturalism. Immigrants who “arrive” continue their life in a place where they do not passively participate in the passing of time, but become actors. Pressed by the hegemonic culture of the host society to adapt, do not cease to practice their religious and origin cultural expressions, often in conditions of urban spatial and social marginalization, they resist assimilation with ethnic persistence strategies. Considering the impact of religion and origin cultural values on expression of differences, it is important to consider their role in the integration process. And, above all-facilitate or hinder integration? These dynamics have been analyzed in a research study on immigrants’ integration process in Palermo. The main results are presented in this paper. In this case study, the research’s data hypothesizes a theoretical model of integration in which immigrants, free to express their religious and cultural differences, tend to reduce their perception of minority

Podlasie, a historical and geographical region in north-eastern Poland, serves as both an external (interstate, European Union) and internal (ethnic, religious, linguistic, cultural) borderland. The primary aim of the article is to present historical and political conditions, national and cultural diversification of the Podlasie region, an analysis of current changes in ethnic and religious structure of the inhabitants as well as analysis of the consequences of changes of geopolitical circumstances in mutual relationships between different communities. Borderlands, especially those highly diverse in terms of nationality, religion, language and culture, are often identified with unstable, conflict-prone areas with past and present antagonism between nations sharing them. This belief has intensified over the last few decades when nationalisms, separatist tendencies and historical conflicts got sparked again in numerous regions of Central and Eastern Europe. However, not all European borderlands have to be stereotypically identified with areas of conflict, resentment and even hatred among the peoples inhabiting them. This is the case, among others, in Podlasie, where there are centuries-old traditions of cohabitation of diverse communities.

Opis:
The analytical method used in the text refers to the article by Ryszard Nycz, Intertextual Poetics: Traditions and Perspectives, in which he defines intertextuality as a category defining the construction and meaning of the text (work of art), making its creation and reception dependent on the presence of other texts and architexts. Philip Glass’ Symphony No. 5 “Requiem, Bardo and Nirmanakaya” is noted for the presence of numerous other texts and architexts. These are the ideas of Tibetan Buddhism and Hinduism, multiculturalism, the reference to the ideas of Romanticism, and to the oratorio genres. The relationship of the 5th Symphony with the ideas of Tibetan Buddhism is reflected, among others, by the use of the texts from The Tibetan Book of the Dead and Shantideva’s Bodhicaryavatara (A Guide to the Boddhisattva’s Way of Life). The connection with the Hindu tradition manifests itself in the use of the texts from the Rig Veda, the Bhagavad Gita, and The Vishnu-Purana. The multiculturalism of Symphony No. 5 is reflected in the use of literary texts taken from a number of different sources. The reference to Romantic style in the Symphony No. 5 is manifested in such features as: melodious vocal parts, neotonality, varied formal structures, predominant use of homophony, contrasting various types of expression in different movements, and the occurrence of great culminations. In the “macroform” of the work the idea of the three parts is highlighted, which binds it to the cyclical form typical of the symphony. As noted by R. Maycock (2002), the sequence of the three themes discussed in the symphony: (1) creation and pre-creation myths, (2) fundamental problems of life and death, (3) visions of apocalypse and paradise and reference to the future, is reflected in the three sections of the composition plan. The relationship with the oratorio genre is demonstrated by setting the piece in 12 vocal-instrumental movements and the important role of the choir.

The cultural security of Poland is a multifaceted state inscribed in widely understood national security and security of social unit. It is also a state, which should be considered from material and non-material perspective based on components of culture, shaping cultural peculiarities of nation and guiding its development directions. The analysis of factors related to the cultural security of Poland allows to perceive this state not only from the perspective of historically shaped, relatively constant components of culture, but also from the perspective of threats occurring in endogenous and exogenous environment. It is primarily concerned with cultural change, particularly modifying value systems, and national identity of Poles, which is extremely difficult and unmeasurable subject of research.

Amulticultural society, moving from a reaction to differentiation to conscious cognition, understanding, dialogue, negotiation as well as cooperation and collaboration, creates multiculturalism. Relationships between representatives of various social and cultural environments as well as national, ethnic or religious groups are treated as a manifestation of the disappearance of social distance and one of the best indicators of integration. London’s multicultural environment, in which there is a clear tendency to collectively integrate cultural identity, enables the creation of intercultural relationships with their own cultural identity. This phenomenon includes various strategies of the acculturation process and mutual adaptation of people from different countries, cultures, religions and speaking different languages. The multicultural identity of mixed relationships is determined, interalia, by the obligations of marriage resulting from the fulfilment of marital roles and compliance with the marital identity. Identity sets internal boundaries between spouses and regulates contacts with family and friends in the family, local, neighbourhood, and global environment.

The modern Maya movement is an example of a new sort of indigenous cultural activism. The long lasting struggle for indigenous rights had finally led to the renegotiation of the social, legal and political order in countries like Guatemala and Mexico. Today we witness a vibrant indigenous activism in many fields, like education for example. This paper deals with the issue of multicultural education in the mentioned countries, but also it presents critical problems of a wider process – i.e. regaining cultural freedom after 500 years of marginalization.

Faith institutions play a vital role in shaping social structure, social capital and social cohesion. Both religious and citizenship education can contribute to making good citizens. The latter is more political oriented, while the former is focused on faith, spirituality and morality. The English model of religious education is oriented towards a multi-faith dialogue, without the aspects of worship and confession. The phenomenological approach assures that every child, regardless of their religious background, is obligated to attend religious education. Today, the UK is facing many challenges, including secularization and cultural differentiation of the society. Thus, the educational institutions revise curricula and aims of learning. The aim of the paper is to present and analyze the main premises of educational policy in the context of religious education in public schools in England. I will also attempt to reconstruct the social and political ongoing debate on the aims of RE.

Opis:
Literary renditions of cities have always gravitated towards the spatial imagination and its ethical counterpart outside the textual space. This paper explores the multicultural geography of the North Indian city Allahabad (recently renamed Prayagraj) observed through Neelum Saran Gour’s postcolonial narratives Allahabad Aria and Invisible Ink, projecting the narrative alignment of spatial aesthetics and cultural ethics. Interrogating the spatial dimensions of a “narrative world” within narrative theory (Ryan) and its interdisciplinary crossover with cultural geography (Sauer; Mitchell; Anderson et al.), the article seeks to examine Gour’s literary city not simply as an objective homogeneous representation, but as a “kshetra” of spatio-cultural cosmos of lived traditions, memories, experiences and collective attitudes of its people, in the context of E. V. Ramakrishnan’s theoretical reflections. The article proposes new possibilities of adapting the Indian concept “kshetra” to spatial literary studies; its aim is also to suggest a new source of knowledge about the city of Allahabad through a community introspection of “doing culture” in the texts, bringing into view people’s shared experiences, beliefs, religious practices and traditions as offshoots of the postcolonial ethos. The article aims to re-contextualize the city’s longstanding multicultural ethics in the contemporary times of crisis, which may affect a shift in the city’s relevance: from regional concern to large-scale significance within ethnically diverse South Asian countries and beyond.
