Incorporating aquatic motifs into his novel Pathologies, Zakhar Prilepin ascribes different functions to them. Firstly, in ‘Chechen story’, water takes the form of rain that constitutes an ordinary, thought irritating, atmospheric phenomenon. However, when the young protagonists fight under siege in Chechnya, water acquires a symbolic meaning, becoming a dire portent of death. In the final scenes, set in Chechnya, water changes its connotation and saves the survivor Russian soldier’s lives. Besides, water plays in Prilepin’s novel (Epilogue) the role of catharsis: it is the river’s water where the author is reborn and ‘baptized’ so that soul was purified of the past sins related to upbringing and care for his adoptive son.

Opis:
The article describes the heraldic motifs of Lviv in poetry and historiographical works of J.B. Zimorowic. It’s goal is to explain by what means, why and what for they are used by the poet. The important factor is an allegorical tradition of the bucolic, which heraldry is a part of. The author quotes and discusses poems and inscriptions by Zimorowic, known only through his work Leopolis [...] obsessa, that was originally placed on the gates of the Lviv (including emblems). Zimorowic had a deep knowledge of the history and coat of arms of Lviv, as he was a great admirer of the city. During his lifetime he was recognized by readers and residents of Lviv as familiar and local poet. The references to various aspects of Lviv that appear in his works are part of an overall strategy (poetic as well as lifetime one) – by writing about his family and local matters he hoped to improve Lviv.

Opis:
The authors focus how Byzantine motifs are presented in the teaching of humanities subjects. The question of the presence of Byzantine motifs is essentially one about the presence of Byzantine heritage in Polish culture. With reference to two school subjects – Polish and History – the authors seek to establish what Polish school students are taught about the reach of Byzantine culture. Present-day teaching of both political and cultural history is underpinned by Occidentalism. Only occasionally is attention paid to the “Eastern” features of Poland’s past. A good example of this is the treatment of one of the most important Polish literary texts, the school perennial, Bogurodzica. This draws on Greek religious hymns, contain words originating in the Greek liturgy, and also alludes to a particular type of icon. Accordingly, the connections between the oldest Polish literary text and Byzantine culture are very clear. However, when classroom teachers discuss Bogurodzica with their pupils, detailing the above-mentioned features, are they aware that this text is an epitome of the presence of Byzantine motifs in Polish literature? Apparently not. With regard to the teaching of history, Byzantine motifs can be approached from at least three angles; in terms of imperial political events, in terms of religious (Eastern rite) aspects of Byzantine culture, and finally in terms of awareness of connections between Polish culture and Eastern rite Christianity, as well as Eastern nations and states viewed as heirs of Byzantine culture. In Polish history there has been a side-lining of the nation’s break with Eastern Christianity even though during certain periods this was the faith of half the Commonwealth’s inhabitants. The marginalisation of this topic does not simply impose a limit on knowledge but it prevents the understanding of particular aspects of our history.

By carefully examining the works of Emerson, a well-known American poet and a look at his poetry and literature, themes and motifs, the influence of one of the great Iranian poets, Saadi Shirazi, can be made clear and confident. Emerson, who was recognized as the founder of the literary school of transcendentalism in American literature, was particularly interested in Sheikh Ajil Saadi, and in his opinion Sa'di was one of the world's greatest poets. The American poet was immersed in Saadi's poetry, tailoring it to his needs. This article tries to investigate Sa'di's contribution to Emerson's works. A poet like Emerson was immersed in Sa'di, loved Saadi, and repeatedly acknowledged that he would love to be like Sa'di and make poetry like his. In order to disseminate his philosophic belief, he needed viable sources from non-European countries. Emerson wanted to criticize the weaknesses of American culture by referring to other rich cultures. It is possible to demonstrate the part Saadi plays in Emerson’s poetry. Sa'di's poetic philosophy has also been embedded in his writings; hence, the sources which shows Emerson has benefited from Sa'di should not be overlooked, since these sources can prove Emerson's being influenced by Sa'di in this research.

Such supernatural beings from South Slavic traditional conceptionsof the world have been largely associated with the pre-Christian deities and their degradations, based on the observed real attributes of the vegetal and animal species. The role of coins is not limited only to a means of payment, but through the various iconographic and epigraphic contents they contain, coins are also a means of cultural communication. The obverse and reverse of coins are a specific form of image, which includes motifs understood as a repeating decorative element that is also a pattern or an iconographic element expressing specific symbolism and themes. Archaeological motifs reflect archaeological monuments or their elements, and their themes commemorate not only the monument itself, but also related aspects studied by archaeologists, e.g. the broadly understood context. The aim of the considerations was to examine the numismatic form of commemorating and popularizing archaeological heritage on the example of selected motifs referring to monuments of Mediterranean archeology appearing on European coins in the years 1990–2005. First, the motifs were analyzed in terms of the form of their depiction on coins, then the archaeological theme with which themotifs were connected was determined and, on its basis, axiological considerations were carried out, the aim of which was to learn a potential answer to the question – why a given motif was placed on a coin.

Creation of petroglyphs has a long history in Iran and are widespread in most parts of the country. The area of study in this essay is Beyram plain which is located in Larestan city in the southern part of Fars province. During archaeological systematic survey in this area, some petroglyphs with various animal motifs were detected and recorded, that can be considered as a part of art and memorials of residents in this settlements. The relative chronology of these motifs is based on analogy and comparative studies with obtained samples from adjacent areas. This research has been performed through both field study and library method. It used the descriptive-analytical methods in order to present, describe, design and compare the newly discovered petroglyphs at Beyram plain. In order to have a detailed analysis of the motifs, ethnographic studies and talking with shepherds and natives were done. And based on these studies, a possible function will be suggested for these kinds of motifs.

The above similarities can be testified not only by distinct macabre motifs but also a very peculiar way the narrator constructs his narrative that can be concluded as an attempt at establishing a particular bond between the protagonist and the reader. Works written by the Poznań based expressionists Stanisław Kubicki and Józef Wittlin provide the appropriate context for the poem.

The creative principles and techniques of Anton Chekhov have proved attractive to modern writers. A connection with Chekhov is evident in the development of the theme of a mental institution, its doctors and patients (Makanin, Pelevin). Also the Chekhovian principle of refusal to categorically judge the words and deeds of the characters gains fundamental importance (Dovlatov). It is from Chekhov that modern writers have learnt to present serious psychological issues and world-view questions through commonplace imagery.

The paper concerns Zuzanna Ginczanka’s floristic signatures (trees, flowers and fruits), which are used by the poet to construct literary tropes. It shows how, by means of these signatures, the following oppositions are introduced: life/death, surface/depth, outside/inside, form/substance, phenomenon/essence. The crux of the argument is that in Ginczanka’s poetry there is a conflict concerning the value of phenomenology, i.e. what is really important: the phenomena (trees, flowers, fruits) or the hidden essences („the Questions of Root”)? I go on to argue that the poet’s thinking corresponds to Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy, in which the subject’s experience is considered to be related to his life environment and the philosophy of the body is identified with the phenomenology of perception. Emphasizing „the Questions of Root” in the very title of the paper indicates what is most problematic for Ginczanka and, at the same time, what determines her recognition of poetry as an expression of unattainable desires.

Opis:
Context and style modifications of contemporary philosophical lyrics are centered on axiological issues. Young artists’ poetry is represented by a harmonious combination of topical themes with aesthetic form. The phenomenon of "spiritual hunger" of the transitional period leads to a search for guidance; therefore, appeal to the sacred truths is permanent in modern reflective lyrics. As Christianity has been the standard of moral virtues for the Ukrainians for a long time, the work of young artists is full of allusions to the Scriptures. Aside from the historical function, biblical images and motifs are the methods of presentation of the poets’ personal, intuitive and existential experiences. Therefore, their works are full of innovative explorations and experiments in description of sustainable images. In particular, the style of M. Kiyanowska’s poems is characterized by a combination of truths from the Old and New Testaments, sometimes at the level of quite unexpected associations. For the lyrical heroine of M. Savka’s poetry the biblical truths provide examples for a life of wisdom which is sanctified by kindness and love to one’s neighbor, and for B. Matiyash the whole world has sacred meaning. The purpose of the paper is to identify the features of the functioning of sacred images in modern Ukrainian poetry, and in particular in philosophical lyrics. This article uses general scientific (analysis, synthesis, induction) and literary methods (drawn from philological, comparative, typological, hermeneutic and psychological studies). Innovative qualities of the writings of the poets of the late 20th and early 21st century are analyzed involving basic approaches of receptive aesthetics and intertextual analysis of the text. The novelty of the research lies in the fact that for the first time in Ukrainian literary studies the work of the young poets provides the basis for a modern interpretation of biblical images and motifs. The results of this research are important for further study of the specific qualities of biblical reception in modern Ukrainian poetry. Practical importance of the results achieved is the ability to use them in teaching the courses on literary theory, modern Ukrainian literature, Ukrainian philosophical lyric, and courses entitled “Literature as a synthesis of religion, philosophy and art” and “The practice of poetry”.

Many of biochemical paths and processes require some metal ions to occur. There are also known the negative effects of the presence of metal ions in the organism. The both sides of metal ions interactions on the living organism require specific regulations and cannot be left without supervision and control of the organism itself. One of the strategy to keep the control on metal ions are cystein-rich proteins that play crucial role in detoxication of metal ions that are dangerous for human organism as well as they help to maintain homeostasis of essential metal ions. Matallothioneins are one of the well known, but still not fully understood, cysteine- rich proteins. They are small proteins but may contain up to 30% of cysteine residues in the sequence, and what makes them very special from chemical point of view - all of the thiols present there are reduced [1]. This property makes these proteins very tempting for coordination of various metal ions. The most efficient binding to metallothionein is observed for the ions belonging to a Group 11 and 12. Cu+, Zn2+ and Cd2+ represent these metal ions [2]. Besides of the lack of disulfide bridges, metallothioneins show also the absence or low amount of aromatic amino acid residues in the sequence [1]. Studies of the metallothioneins and their isoforms among different organisms show that the position of cysteine residues is very conservative [3]. Considering this aspect of metallothionein structure, some specific motifs of cysteine residues arrangement can be found in the sequence of these proteins. Most of the common polythiol motifs are CXC, CXXC, CXXXC, CC – where C is a cysteine residue and X is random α-amino acid residue (other than cysteine) [3–5]. The influence of the cysteine residues organization on the specificity of metal ions binding was intensively studied. The differences observed for specificity of metal ions binding by metallothioneins and selected polythiol motifs are reviewed in this paper – with strong emphasis on the effect of the cysteine residues topography.

The aim of the essay is to analyse selected images and the ways in which food functions in films. The author attempts to demonstrate how durable and intense are the connections between food and film. The text constitutes a type of a catalogue presenting examples of culinary meanings in film, which are as diverse as possible, although the provided examples certainly do not exhaust the topic and their selection is to some extent subjective. The text is written from the perspective of film studies, with some important consequences thereof. Primarily, description decidedly dominates over analysis and interpretation, the possible directions of which are only signalled. The author demonstrates that culinary issues in films often carry a metaphorical and symbolic potential, thus becoming a carrier of information regarding the cultural and socio-political context in which the film was made. As a film specialist, she is interested in the manner in which culinary themes (i.e. food and various actions related to it) constitute an element of a film’s narration by defining the presented world, providing the characterisation of the protagonists and their interrelationships, creating moods, evoking emotions etc. Both types of filmic culinaries, i.e. those inside and outside the film itself, are described and signalled in the context of concrete films (or scenes).

In this way, we can have an idea of the mutual references that are made between all those works, and of the different usage that they show.

The article discusses the references to Faust by Johann Wolfgang Goethe present in the works of Czesław Miłosz. They appear in his poems, as well as in essays and non-literary texts, e.g. interviews. The references to Goethe in Miłosz’s work are also of interest, especially included in autobiographical statements. The article attempts to indicate certain regularities concerning the occurrence of intertextual references to Goethe’s tragedy, related to the poet’s worldview, his aesthetic choices and biographical context. The considerations included in the article lead to the conclusion that the hero of the tragedy symbolises the content which, after World War II, made it possible to name and understand the processes that led to the catastrophe of war and the rejection of humanity. Faust can be a tool for self-characterisation or an accusation against German culture and the cult of science and progress, leading to the alienation of the individual.

The title “Kraszewski’s Armchair” refers to the name of the rock located in the ravine of the river Teteriv commemorating the writer’s stay in Zhytomyr, where Józef Ignacy Kraszewski would spend long hours seeking inspiration for literary and artistic work as well as rest. This thread serves as a starting point to reflect on the meanings offered by the theme of the river in abundant works of the writer: from the first poetic (Dumanie nad Horyniem, Szatan i kobieta) and prosaic attempts (Życie sieroty and other), through novels from the periods of Vilnius and Zhytomyr and theoretical works (on the landscape), and travel writings, to the notes created at the end of life. The core of reviewing some of the problems related to the forms of the writer’s literary imagination as well as world perception and feeling is the theme of metamorphoses and passing directly combined with the element of the river.

Novels with the intention to create a comprehensive and recapitulative “chronicle” picture of Czech society in contemporary history present one of the productive thematic tendencies in Czech fiction. Their plots are usually based on confrontations between political events and private stories. In dramatic clashes between “big” and “small” histories, sex and eroticism come to play an important role. They are also essential elements in the novel Most přes řeku zapomnění (The Bridge over the River of Oblivion) (2015) by Jaroslav Čejka. The story tracks the life of the protagonist (and that of his brother) over the course of several decades and shows how numerous love affairs and erotic escapades frame his political career. The present analytical essay focuses on the erotic motifs as realisation of the erotic mode in Čejka’s fictional picture of the “normalization” period during the communist era.

A martyr and a woman saint – hagiographic motifs in the plays by Krystyn OstrowskiThe article makes an attempt to examine two plays by Krystyn Ostrowski based on hagiographic motifs. Święty Wojciech męczennik [Saint Adalbert the Martyr] presents the history of the Bishop of Prague from the noble familyoftheSlavniks, beginning from his miraculous healingin his infancy and ending with his martyrdom. The text Święta Elżbieta Węgierska [Saint Elizabeth of Hungary] shows such episodes as the arrival of the juvenile Hungarian princess to the Wartburg Castle, her marriage with Ludwig, the miracle of change of bread into roses, the exile and death of the saint. Although the portraits of Wojciech and the duchessof Thuringia were built in reference to earlier hagiographic works devoted to them, and therefore, essentially, to conventionalized elements of hagiographies, Ostrowski actually creates a modern image of the saints. He has also consistently connected the structure of vita with the scheme of passio, while the miracula were only used slightly. The characters, stripped of magnificence and pathos, have been brought somewhat closer to the level of perception typical to a 19th-century reader or viewer.

Podjęta w artykule tematyka dotyczy zagadnień historycznych, geograficzno-lingwistycznych oraz onomastycznych. W świetle zebranego materiału źródłowego wynika, iż słowiańskie nazwy terenowe występowały powszechnie we wsiach wschodniej części Dolnych Łużyc i były używane przez miejscową ludność.
The article addresses historical, geo-linguistic, and onomastic issues. As the gathered sources show, Slavic topographic names were common and widely used in the villages of eastern parts of Lower Lusatia. They were saved through the writings of the 19th century regionalists and explorers of the Silesian-Lusatian border area. Most of them testify to the usage of the Lower Sorbian language in the villages of the discussed region till 1945. For centuries, adequate nomenclature has facilitated orientation in the neighbourhood, which helped ’tame’ the landscape. Germans, who colonized Lusatia through centuries, frequently created formatives in such a way that Slavic elements have been preserved to this day, for example, in the names of villages and towns or in topographic nomenclature.

The Bulla issued by Clement IV on 26 March 1267 is the official document in which Saint Hedwig of Silesia was declared a Saint of the Catholic Church. An analysis of the papal document reveals that it is permeated with biblical spirit. This is manifested by numerous biblical references in the form of short citations, paraphrases of the excerpts from the Holy Scripture, biblical metaphors and mentions of biblical characters. The author of the Bulla used all those biblical references to outline the spiritual profile of Saint Hedwig and describe her role as a Saint who intercedes in Heavens for those who live on Earth. In the light of the Bulla, Saint Hedwig appears as a woman whose life was firmly grounded in the biblical foundations.

Opis:
In the study the author focuses on the legacy of folktales as represented in a wide scope of traditional and „artistic folktales“ originally aimed at children listeners/readers. In the texts by Pavol Dobsinsky and Samuel Czambel, the author attempted to identify the parallel ideas and also mythological-fairytale parallels related to the themes of selected fairytales and rich in the motifs of truth, justice and also lies and injustice. Characterwise, attention has also been paid to linguistic and stylistic means. Further attention has been paid to pre-set functions of characters in fantasy, heroic and family-social fairytales; the author compared them with more realistic fairytales which often reflect social-economic phenomena as well as attitudes to lies and truth. When characterising the phenomenon of Truth, the author gravely relied on the basic ethical principles of fairytales and these were applied on the well-known fairytale Či jesto pravda na svete (Is there any Truth in the world?) which later served as a prototext for an artistic poetic prose of Milan Rufus. The poet affirmatively processes the prototext, creatively using ethical and humane ideas. Other analysed texts include a modern parodic and nonsense artistic fairytale entitled Rozprávky uja Klobásu (Mr. Saussage‘s Fairytales) by Julius Satinsky, where Lie is a predominant narrator´s standpoint in order to purposely mystify the reader.

The paper focuses on the song as a syncretic, literary-musical genre. The appearance of song quotes in a novel (Cudzoziemka by Maria Kuncewiczowa) represents an interesting case, which may nevertheless be examined from purely literary perspective. However, a more profound interdisciplinary reading, which combines the elements of analysis of a piece of prose and a piece of music, enables a better interpretation of this particular motif in the novel.

Opis:
Przykłady takiego motywu można znaleźć w dwóch dziełach wybitnych literatów tej epoki: w powieści Şemsettina Samiego Taaşşuk-ı Talat ve Fitnat i w dramacie Namıka Kemala Vatan yahut Silistre.
The focus of the article revolves around the examination of the role of attire within the early works of the Tanzimat period. Significant focus was directed towards the motif of women enrobing male attire and vice versa. Illustrative instances of this motif are discerned in two seminal works authored by prominent writers of the era: Namık Kemal’s drama Vatan yahut Silistre and Şemsettin Sami’s novel Taaşşuk-ı Talat ve Fitnat. The introductory segment delineates the epoch of reform, spanning the latter half of the 19th century, followed by an exposition of the literary landscape of the period, accentuating the pivotal role of garb within the narrative framework. Subsequently, succinct biographies are presented, followed by a discourse on themes associated with disguise. In Taaşşuk-ı Talat ve Fitnat, the eponymous character, Talat, assumes female garb, imperiling his reputation, to gain access to the abode of his beloved. Conversely, in Vatan yahut Silistre, Zekiye dons masculine attire to pursue her beloved who has departed for war, set against the backdrop of the Crimean War. Both works serve as a plea for greater freedom of association between individuals bound by affection.

Opis:
The literary works discussed in this article exploit the motif of Fryderyk Chopin and his oeuvre in a variety of ways. The earliest novel is Lucrezia Floriani (1846), penned by the French writer George Sand, Chopin’s companion. The creation of Prince Karol (Chopin’s name in the novel), as if “detached” from the Polish composer’s biography, is an interesting, although none too original (even within the context of Sand’s oeuvre) example of the Romantic hero. Popular output, aimed at a readership seeking above all scandal and emotion, is represented by the German writer Hermann Richter’s novel Drei Frauen um Chopin (1935) and the contemporary thriller of collective authorship The Chopin Manuscript (2008). In these works, the composer is a tool designed to give readers the illusion of becoming acquainted with his biography or to interest sensation-seekers. Artistically the most interesting novel is Preludes, by the Danish writer Peer Hultberg (1989). Besides its original artistic form, the author is the only one to deal with musical material, attempting to present in prose that which ought to form the heart of every work about the brilliant musician, but which was achieved only by Cyprian Norwid in Fortepian Szopena [Chopin’s piano].

Opis:
W zbiorach Biblioteki Raczyńskich w Poznaniu znajduje się inkunabuł Epistolae św. Hieronima wydrukowany w 1470 roku w mogunckiej oficynie Petera Schöffera (sygn. Inc. I 11). Analogie formalne ze znanym z literatury inkunabułem Inc. 829 z Biblioteki Jagiellońskiej skłaniają jednak do alternatywnej atrybucji – anonimowemu twórcy krakowskiemu (zwanemu Iluminatorem Dekretaliów).
The collections of the Raczyński Library in Poznań include the incunabulum Epistolae by Saint Hieronimus published in the printing office of Peter Schöffer in Mainz in 1470 (call number: Inc. I 11). This work is relatively richly illuminated, having a number of decorated ornamented initials (rubrics, delicate initials and illuminated initials) as well as a border illuminations – a row of fleuron ornaments depicting a deer, two little monkeys and a bird. An analysis of the zoomorphic motifs has revealed that the zoomorphic motifs are directly related to the content of the book. An analysis of the formal features of the enlarged and decorated capital letters and the first letters of a section of the text made it possible to establish that its originator represented typical German book illumination tradition, and possibly even cooperated with the Mainz-based printing office of Peter Schöffer. A number of certain formal analogies with the incunabulum Inc. 829, currently held at the Jagiellonian Library and widely addressed in the literature, suggest however an alternative attribution, namely that of an anonymous Cracow-based artist (known as the Illuminator of the Decretalia).

Pierwsze wiadomości zawierała relacja Marco Polo z podróży do Chin. A do XVI w. zaczęły docierać obiekty eksportowane przez Portugalczyków i Holendrów. Wzbudzały zachwyt kolekcjonerów i dostarczały inspiracji. Od XV w. podejmowano prace zmierzające do wynalezienia europejskiej porcelany. Udało się to z chwilą założenia w 1710 r. Królewskiej Manufaktury Porcelany w Miśni, a później dość licznych wytwórni m.in.: w Wiedniu, Berlinie, Nymphenburgu, Ludwigsburgu, Sèvres oraz polskich w Korcu i Baranówce. Dekoracje wczesnych wyrobów naśladowały porcelanę chińską i japońską, a jednym z popularnych motywów – malowanych emaliami ceramicznymi – były formy floralne, w tym kwiaty mające w sztuce orientalnej znaczenie symboliczne. Artykuł prezentuje historyczny rozwój form i rodzajów motywów kwiatowych wykorzystywanych w dekoracji wyrobów ceramicznych. Omówiono różnorodne źródła inspiracji motywami florystycznymi i zmieniającą się stylistykę dekoracji, która odpowiadała aktualnym prądom artystycznym (od rokoka do art deco).
The homeland of porcelain is China, where it was produced in the times of the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.–220 A.D.) and improved during the reign of the Tang Dynasty (618–906) and the Song Dynasty (960–1279). In Europe, porcelain appeared only after centuries. The first news came with Marco Polo’s account of his trip to China. In the 16th century objects exported by the Portuguese and the Dutch appeared. They aroused delight among the collectors and provided inspiration. From the 15th century work aimed at inventing European porcelain was undertaken. The success came with the foundation of the Royal porcelain factory in Meissen in 1710, and subsequently with quite a number of manufactories in Vienna, Berlin, Nymphenburg, Ludwigsburg, Sèvres and Polish factories in Korzec and Baranówka. Decoration of the early products imitated Chinese and Japanese porcelain, and one of the popular motifs – painted with ceramic enamels – were floral forms, including flowers having symbolic meaning in Oriental art. The article presents the historical development of the forms and types of floral motifs used in the decoration of ceramic products. It discusses various sources of inspiration evoked by floristic motifs, and the changing style of decoration, which corresponded to the current artistic styles (from rococo to art deco).

The aim behind this study was to identify the plants which are the floristic motifs of ornaments inside of Church of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven in Kraków. The art techniques used in ornaments submitted to the analysis were: paintings, sculptures and stained glass-works. The analysis was based on the photographs of various parts of the St. Mary's Basilica taken between 2017 and 2018. Identified species of plants were presented in the table. In the analysis performed here, the author was focused on the symbolism of chosen floral art motifs, since the artist’s botanical knowledge was not the only inspiration for utilising such decorations. Due to its symbolism, the motif of flowers was commonly used in the religious art, highlighting the dignity and majesty of this beautiful place of worship. Even though the meaning of plants as a symbol often depends on the cultural basis in which the work is done, there are some examples of plants that are widely known as religious symbols by everyone.

Vietnamese blue and white ware has recently become an object of scientific scholarly interest. In the beginning, this kind of pottery was overshadowed by Chinese products, but later on it experienced a boom in the 15th and 16th centuries. In this paper, I analyse the development of ceramics on the territory of modern Vietnam, including its shape, decorative motifs and ornament symbolism while focusing on the unique national character of this category of products. Despite strong Chinese influences which are clearly visible in the technological borrowings and symbolism of depictions, Vietnamese pottery shows a skilful mixture of tradition and foreign inspirations. Unlike their Chinese counterparts, Vietnamese painting styles clearly give the Vietnamese pottery of this period a unique, individual form. The blue and white vessels are no longer copies or imitations but local products of high artistic value.

Aim of the research. An attempt to discover how the literature of former eras is perceived by first-year high school pupils, and to use the information obtained to improve the teaching the Polish language. Methodology. The basis for the diagnosis was the results of a survey among first-year high school pupils in Wielkopolska at the end of the 2017-8 school year. The analysis of the material obtained was preceded by a diagnosis of the presence of the literature itself in the program requirements for the first class, as well as an analysis of the requirements set by the "new" high school diploma. The last stage of considerations, based on the results of students' surveys, was formulated from the perspective of the possibilities of an anthropological and cultural approach to the school literature of former eras. Results. Analysis of the students' responses has shown that the literature is not a frequent reference point for students finishing their first year of high school. Information gathered during the year-long study on the subject of the Polish language oscillate between the issues of visuality of the era and individual preferences. However, they are not directly connected with the subject. They are closer to the student reception of popular culture or general associations, which make it impossible to positively assess pupil competence in the reception and understanding of literary epochs. Conclusion. The anthropological view of student reflections allows for the preliminary development of working methods which postpone old tests beyond the space of obligatory content preceding "real" literary lessons. On the contrary, the life of a man of ancient times, entangled in his culture, is not strictly distant from student experience.

Opis:
Morphology is the study of the form, shape and structure of an organism. The connection between the morphology and symbolism of trees is associated with the spirituals bonds existing between humans and trees. The common terms, such as „tree”, „trunk”, „branch”, „root”, „fruit”, „flower”, „leaf” have a specific meaning in botany. In addition these terms carry various symbolic meanings. This article attempts to analyse symbolic plant motifs which were based on the morphological structure of trees. The symbolic significance of trees is associated with their specific structure: the crown represents the mystical heaven, the trunk symbolizes the earthly world, the roots extend deep into the underworld. Possibly the best known cosmic tree (arbor mundi) is the Scandinavian Ash or Yggdrasil. It also represents the axis mundi – the centre of the world. Tree-like diagrams which graphically illustrate genealogies refer to the structure of trees as well (e.g. the tree of Jesse). Trees are the largest and longest living organisms on our planet. Among the tallest trees in the world are: Sequoia sempervirens „Hyperion” from California (measuring 115,5 m), and Eucalyptus regnans „Icarus Dream” from Tasmania (97 m high). The largest tree in terms of total volume is Sequoiadendron giganteum „General Sherman” in California (1500 cubic meters). The myth of the Ultimate Lotus Tree Sidrat al-Muntaha – that marks the end of the seventh heaven is a reference to a very large tree (probably Zizyphus lotus, however its specimen are not so large). The oldest known living specimen is the „Methuselah”, a bristle cone pine Pinus longaeva in California, which is estimated to be about 5000 years old. Taxus baccata from Henryków Lubański is the oldest tree (1250 years-old) on record in Poland. Due to their long life span, trees can be seen as “monuments”, which remind the world of important events in history, eg. the sycamore tree destroyed during the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre on September 11, 2001, whose roots were used in preparation for the sculpture honoring St. Paul’s Church. Tree symbolism also relates to changes in the appearance of trees that result from their life cycle and phenology. Trees, which lose their leaves in winter and produce new ones in spring, symbolize rebirth after death. Therefore, the cosmic tree is also called the Tree of Life. In Japanese culture the seasonal changes in the appearance of trees indicated the passage of time. In many cultures around the world trees were held sacred because they were believed to be the homes of certain gods (e.g. Ficus sycomorus in ancient Egipt, oak trees in Slavic and German legends). It should be noted, however, that the trees themselves were not the objects of worship but the gods who were thought to dwell in these trees. Nowadays the respect people have for trees stems from other reasons.
