Opis:
An iron spearhead accidentally found in 2020 in the woods of Rudnik nad Sanem, was initially described as a piece of the spear and dated, on the basis of its shape, back to the Middle Ages, most probably to 10th–13th century. In the course of conservation work the remains of wood from the socket were restored. Wood species analysis revealed that the shaft was made of maple tree. C14 dating shows that it originated from Modern Period, most likely from the 17th century. In light of these discoveries one should conclude that the spearhead was not part of a spear, but of a javelin used as a hunting weapon, probably in the 17th century.

Archaeological explorations carried out inside the crypts of Catholic churches typically deliver a wealth of movable historical artefacts, including numerous devotional objects such as pilgrim souvenirs. During excavation works in the crypts of Końskowola parish church of The Discovery of The Holy Cross and St. Andrew the Apostle, two wooden crosses made of dark wood were found. Looking at the history of devotionalism and the pilgrimage movement, it became possible to define the role of the described objects when they reached Końskowola. Type analysis of the material used in the production of the objects can help in further studies on wooden objects brought to Poland over the centuries.

An archaeological exploration conducted in 2019 in the crypts of the post-Bernardine church of the Elevation of the Cross in Łuków brought various finds of burial goods, excavated in fragments, probably transferred together with human remains in the 19th century to ossuaries located in the crypt. The artefacts included fragments of three kontush sashes, being the most indispensable and splendid element of the Polish national costume. The analysis of these objects, both in terms of ornamentation and technology, helped us to estimate their probable manufacturing location.

Opis:
The reviewed book is an extensive study devoted to criminal trial as conducted in the towns of Southern Poland of early modern period. The author relied on particularly rich source material composed of norm-setting acts, writings of lawyers engaged in theoretical analysis and a large number of court books referring to penal cases, both those presented in the form of manuscripts as well as those that appeared in print. The significance of the study consists in the exploitation by its author of the sources illustrative of legal practice. The author investigated, with a particular precision, the factual course that the municipal criminal trial used to take in more serious penal cases. He laid a particular emphasis on the fairly well source-supported evidentiary proceedings. Worthy of note is his analysis devoted to the substantial law basis according to which the judgements were passed. The analysis showed that in the 16th through 18th centuries, in the municipal courts the local customary law played significant role, apart from that played by the Saxon and Magdeburg legal systems. On the basis of the research that he made the author suggests a conclusion that, despite the differences detectable in the practice of the respective towns, there functioned a uniform municipal penal procedure. The latter was characterized by certain features. These were: 1) the absence – in general – of individualized inquiry that would precede the judicial part of proceedings; 2) the instituting and conducting the judicial proceedings through ex officio method being regarded as something absolutely exceptional; 3) the proceedings were – as a rule – instituted due to the proposal of the plaintiff although sometimes they were instituted through the handing one of the accused to the court; 4) the varying role of the parties engaged in the trial, this being dependant on the specific court; 5) a significant role played by the defence counsels; 6) the lack of limitations that might be imposed on evidentiary proceedings with respect to the specific stage of the trial; 7) the evaluation of evidence based on common sense and not on rigid rules; 8) a slight significance of the appeal proceedings, this might be due to the influence of inquisitional type of procedure. While highly appreciating the practice of criminal courts, the author arrived at a conclusion that remarkably large number of elements of accusatorial and adversary nature that are found in the discussed proceedings locates the criminal trial conducted in the Polish towns of the modern era on the position of the accusatorial and adversary model, the modern elements of inquisitional origin being also detectable in it.

The separation of the material into different types of cloth was quite painstaking and lengthy. Only one of the grave robes has survived in an almost intact condition. It was a simple grave robe without a back. During the analysis of the skeletal remains, it was matched to the red stained skeleton of an infant.

The article contrasts two chronologically distinct groups of artifacts: painted ceramics from the Hallstatt period and the so-called white ceramics, produced until the end of modernity. They are related by means of the technique of covering a bright surface with colorful patterns and the stylistic similarity of certain geometric motifs. However, the ideas behind creating these pictorial representations were completely different. In the article, painted vessels from the Hallstatt period and modernity will be the starting point for detailed studies on magical and rational thinking about the world. It was in the Renaissance that, according to the concept of the sociologist and philosopher Max Weber (1864‒1920), a “disenchantment of the world”, took place ‒ e.g. the departure from the magical understanding of reality. Early Iron Age and Modernity ceramics will illustrate this process.

Opis:
This article places into a broader scope of the research over the image of Gdańsk and its inhabitants in chronicles that are carried out by the authoress. It deals with the analysis of the historiographical sources originating from beyond Gdańsk. The majority of chronicles’ excerpts dedicated to Gdańsk deals with its political and trade activity. The authoress is particularly interested in the criteria, put forward by the chroniclers from 15th to 16th c., which decided on Gdańsk’s urban character, or indicated its value as a city and made it worth a visit. It was a period of intense development of this centre. The purpose of the analyses is to, i.a., check whether the contemporary chroniclers observed these changes and how they evaluated them. The issue has not yet been addressed in the literature of the subject. The analyses, referring to Hans Werner-Goetz’s methodology concerning the representations in chronicles (so-called Vorstellungsgeschichte), were carried out on various chronicles, relations and records, i.a. travel records (Gilbert de Lannoy and Mikołaj Wimann), Polish chronicles (Annales by Jan Długosz, chronicles by Bernard Wapowski, Joachim Bielski, Polonia by Marcin Kromer), foreign chronicles Germania by Eneas Silvius Piccolomini, Wandalia by Albert Krantz), or universal chronicles (Cosmographia by Sebastian Münster). The analysis shows that in the first half of the 15th century the contemporaneous authors did not stand out of other towns in the region (Jan Długosz, Gilbert de Lannoy, Eneas Silvius Piccolomini). Their assessment was made while they pondered on the city’s fortifications, geographical location and building material. It was not until the Thirteen Years War (1454–1466) and subsequent expansion of the city that the chronicles of the 16th c. noticed the ongoing change (especially Albrecht Krantz and Sebastian Münster). They described the “civilizational leap” that took place in Gdańsk in short time, namely during the life of one man. In their opinion, the changes were particularly noticeable in the fast pace of replacing wooden buildings with brick ones. The image of Gdańsk in the foreign chronicles does not contain elements of the descriptions of the city characteristic of Gdańsk records, which the authoress analyzed elsewhere – there are no references to specific buildings, streets and squares, that is, the living space of the city’s inhabitants.

One of the medieval trials by ordeal, the cold water ordeal, regained popularity in the Early Modern Period and served as an important element in witchcraft trials. Floating on water was seen as a decisive proof of guilt and resulted in the accused being handed over to the torturer. This paper discusses the use of the water ordeal in Poland in the sixteenth–eighteenth century, primarily by municipal courts. Among the issues mentioned in the paper there is also the question of the stage of the trial in which the water ordeal was used and whether the accused were undressed before being subjected to the ordeal.

W artykule omówiono pięć traktatów napisanych przez wielkich architektów i wynalazców włoskiego renesansu, szczególną uwagę poświęcając problematyce konstrukcji mostów. Twórcy renesansu wykorzystywali dorobek starożytności przywołując kanony budownictwa tego okresu. Oprócz nowej myśli w zakresie architektury, przestrzeni miejskiej, ogrodów, wojskowości zawartej w nowożytnych traktatach powstawały projekty studialne mostów, które znajdziemy w szkicach Leonarda da Vinci, traktatach Fausto Veranzio, innych twórców doby renesansu. Koncepcje te wykraczały ponad możliwości techniczne epoki, stąd mogły być realizowane dopiero po wielu, wielu latach.
The article discusses five treatises written by great Italian Renaissance architects and inventors with a focus on bridge structures. Renaissance creators made use of the achievements of antiquity by restoring the canons of building of that period. At the same time Leonardo da Vinci or Fausto Veranzio produced bridge designs that were beyond the technical capabilities of their age. Centuries had to pass before those ideas were put into practice.

The topic of this paper is a non-invasive research case study of a protected monument mound in Krzczonów, Świętokrzyskie voivodeship in Lesser Poland. It explores the possibilities of noninvasive methodological approaches in the recognition of archaeological sources by asking whether it is possible to procure relevant information without conducting excavations. A new interpretation of the mound’s function and chronology is based on data derived from multimethod field surveys including remote sensing (satellite imagery, UAV, light aircraft, ALS), geophysical (magnetic gradiometry, earth resistance), total station measurements and analytical field walking prospection along with comparison of archival field-walking data. We would like to hypothesize that, contrary to the protected monument list, the Krzczonów earthwork is not a prehistoric feature but could be related to the end of 14th up to the beginning of the 16th century. In this case it could be understood as a remnant of a motte-type castle

The research undertaken in the article is put in the context of the social, administrative and economic transformations undergone by Chełmno (Kulm), which had been a bishop’s town since 1505. These changes also had a significant impact on the organisation of the town’s chancery, which carried out tasks and duties entrusted by municipal authorities. This was reflected in an increase in the number of town officials working in the chancery, to which court secretaries belonged. They formed a professional group, which was characterised by their economic, political and cultural activity against the background of Chełmno community in the early modern period. The main research objective of the article is to create a comprehensive picture of the social environment of Chełmno town chancery from the sixteenth century until 1772, the personnel of which constituted the intellectual elite of the town, and to present the characteristic traits of this group. At the same time, the text presents the profiles of town secretaries and clerks previously unknown or rarely mentioned in the scholarly literature. Methods applied in the research involve critical analysis of the preserved town books and individual documents, both manuscript and edited. On the basis of data collected from the primary sources, a prosopographical analysis has also been conducted. The result of the studies is an overview picture of the professional group formed by the secretaries and clerks of early modern Chełmno, which includes their social origins, family ties, non-professional activity and wealth.

During archaeological supervision carried out in 2010 and 2011 around John Paul II Square in Ciechanów remains of the building complex of the mid-market-square block were excavated. The scale of the research is unprecedented among historic towns founded in Mazovia. Relics of the foundations of the brick town hall, the weigh or the cropping house as well as a series of the relics of light wooden structures – probably stalls or butcheries, forming a quadrangle of the compact building block in the central part of the square, were recorded. The study of portable finds indicates that the town hall and the accompanying buildings were probably erected in the 16th century and they ceased to exist after mid-17th century.

Opis:
The early modern goldsmithery in Chojnice (Konitz) has so far been outside the main area of scholarly research. The search in archives and libraries conducted for the purposes of the article, as well as the analysis of preserved works crafted by local masters, has therefore brought a lot of new, previously unknown information on the subject. Chojnice is a typical, small centre of goldsmithery, which remained overshadowed by Gdansk, a powerful hub of crafts located nearby. For nearly whole of the eighteenth century only a single workshop operated in the town, and a new master usually appeared only after the death of his predecessor. The research yielded information about five goldsmiths operating in Chojnice in that century, as well as one apprentice who died before becoming a master. Nearly all of them were connected by various family ties. Only a few works of art created in the Chojnice workshops were identified, but they bear the signatures of only two masters who were active in the last third of the eighteenth century. Johann Friedrich Felsch I (1744–1808) made several items for the churches nearby: an incense boat in Chojnice, a monstrance in Bysław, a monstrance base in Wiele and a reliquary cross in Tuchola, as well as a set of six spoons, currently stored in the collection of the Malbork Castle Museum. It is worth noting that his works, apart from the master’s mark, bore a sign that proved he was a member of the guild of goldsmiths in Malbork. Johann Gottlieb Jantzen (1742–1772), Felsch’s brother-in-law, delivered a monstrance to the church in Jeleńcz (now in Tuchola), and a frame for the worshipped statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary to the Bernardine Church in Zamarte (now missing). All these items represent an average level of artistry, and show considerable dependence on the style developed by the masters from Gdansk, where both goldsmiths active in Chojnice studied their craft.

The article discusses witch trials in the court of the village head [sołtys] in Kowalewo (Pomorskie) in the Early Modern period. It is the first scientific study referring to the subject matter. The description of witch trials in the court in Kowalewo was possible thanks to the preserved books of the town council, which included the information concerning trials, accusations or sometimes only sentences. The course of the trials indicates that in Kowalewo and the vicinities it was strongly believed that witches serving the devil existed. The belief increased in the times of economic and social crises, which were quite abundant in Poland in the 16th–18th centuries.

Opis:
The article concerns the presence of nature in pre-industrial towns. I address here the problems I encountered when recreating the urban layout of Dolsk, an averagesized town in Greater Poland belonging to the bishops of Poznan in the Old Polish period, at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. This problem concerned showing the socio-economic character of the city. The reproduction constitutes part of Greater Poland’s volume of the series of the Historical Atlas of Poland. The search for the presence of nature in cities was based on a query in written sources from the first half of the 17th century and on the basis of the oldest known and preserved city map from the end of the 18th century. The reference to natural elements in Dolsk is associated with the presence of home gardens, which constitute a kind of natural arrangement. Most often they appear when describing a real estate that was the subject of purchase/sale transactions between burghers of Dolsk or when loans were secured on a real estate. Gardens were located on plots, which constituted the basic unit of the ownership division of the urban space. However, they were not always mentioned in the descriptions of transactions. Most often they appeared at the houses that were built on plots limited from the back by the lakes surrounding Dolsk or passed into suburban areas. However, also in the case of plots that bordered with other plots from the back, one may find information about the presence of a garden on such a plot. The presence of gardens at the back of the plots in Dolsk was also registered on the oldest preserved city map of 1794–1796. Both this fact and the forwarding of elements of nature inside town walls on plans of perspective towns from the early modern period means that marking gardens on the reconstruction of the spatial arrangement seems necessary, especially in the case of towns of the size and character of Dolsk. This makes it necessary to reflect upon the methodology of creating historical maps of old towns. The simplest solution would be to create a generalized, simplified visualization of the urban space based on data taken from the oldest town plan, but not merely from a simple redrawing of the border between the residential-economic zone and the garden zone. However, not being able to mark these borders precisely on the basis of data from written sources from the 17th century, one should adopt a conventional method of marking these zones. However, this requires further reflection on the methodological concepts of modern cartography and their use to create historical maps showing the reconstruction of spatial systems of towns in the pre-industrial period. It seems that further work on a similar way of marking the space of urban plots in average-size and small towns will allow to develop a model of cartographic presentation that will better reflect the character of the space of towns such as Dolsk.

Opis:
Kościuszko Street in Rzeszów, leading from the market square to the main promenade, is considered to be one of the oldest streets in the city. In the late Middle Ages and the early Modern Period, it connected the city centre with the parish church, where the first owners of Rzeszów rest. In the course of the archaeological watching brief conducted during the reconstruction of the street, it was possible to collect a significant number of artefacts related to the everyday life of the city (e.g. tiles, glass objects, coins, horseshoes). The subject matter of this article is a selection of footwear pieces and the items directly related to them. The research gives an opportunity to get to know better the material culture and tastes of the inhabitants of Rzeszów.

Opis:
W części I artykułu omówiono wyniki badań archeologicznych w obrębie kościoła Wizytek. Celem części II jest próba opisowego odtworzenia pierwotnej formy architektonicznej świątyni, znalezienia inspiracji takiej, a nie innej formy, wreszcie próba wytypowania najbardziej prawdopodobnego architekta kościoła i całego zespołu, na podstawie dostępnych materiałów źródłowych oraz wyników badań wykopaliskowych. Zaledwie trzy przekazy pisane oraz dwa ikonograficzne można wykorzystać jako źródła informacji do ogólnej rekonstrukcji wyglądu kościoła i klasztoru od połowy XVIII do lat 30. XIX stulecia, to znaczy w okresie, kiedy nie zmienił on jeszcze w sposób zasadniczy pierwotnej swojej formy. Bryła klasztoru harmonijnie i w sposób zbliżony do doskonałości godziła surowe zalecenia budowlane reguły zakonnej z obowiązującymi wymogami późnobarokowej architektury sakralnej.
The first part of the article dealt with the results of archaeological excavations within the Visitationists' church. The aim of part II is an attempt at descriptive re-creation of the original architectonic form of the church, discovering the inspiration of such a form, and finally an attempt to name the most likely architect who designed the church and the whole complex, on the basis of available source materials and results of excavation research. Only three written and two iconographic records can be used as sources of information for the general reconstruction of the appearance of the church and convent between the mid-18th century and the 1830s, i.e. in the period when it did not radically change its original form. Record analysis and the results of field research allowed for defining generally the architectonic shape of the church. It was a one-nave church, with a short porch, the three-bay nave lined by several shallow side chapels on the east and west side (which are imitated by the currently existing articulation of walls) and a one-bay almost square presbytery. Interior arrangement resembled both the slightly earlier erected Capuchin Church in Lublin, and the half-a-century older Church of the Visitationists in Krakow. It seems, that the articulation of the main facade of the church of the Visitationists, with its pairs of pilasters on the sides of the entrance portal, the traces of which were discovered during archaeological research, and a finial in the shape of a triangular pediment also resembled the middle section of the facade of the nearby Capuchin church. The space of the inner sacrum, which comprises the church itself and monastic choirs on the sides of the presbytery, was laid on the plan in the shape of a letter 'T', absolutely unique among Polish monastic churches. Both choirs divide the interior of the claustrum into three garths, and the corner rounded risalits turn the Visitationist complex into an exceptionally compact cubic layout, to which the shape of the church was also subordinated. As K. Majewski has rightly pointed out, the complex as a whole, although it was constructed for over two decades, was built as a result of one spatial concept which was consequently realized throughout that period. Harmoniously and in a way close to perfection the bulk of the monastery combined strict building guidelines of the monastic rule with the binding requirements of the late Baroque sacred architecture. There seems to be no need to look for remote in space and time allusions to the architectonic shape of the church and convent of the Visitationists. They were perfectly well inscribed into the then tendencies in Lublin architecture, animated by a small but influential circle of outstanding artists, and primarily two architects from Warszawa then (i.e. around 1730) operating also in the Lublin region: Paweł Antoni Fontana and Karol Bay. While considering possible designers of the project of the monastery, those two names are most aptly mentioned, since they were the most eminent architects associated with the Lublin region at that time. However, because all the stylistic details in the monastery have been stripped off (with the exception of the so called lamus), one can only hypothetically indicate one designer. Significant clues seem to weigh in favour of Karol Bay as the author of the project of the Visitationist monastery, though it is clear that can never be certain.

Opis:
The number of archaeological explorations of churches has increased in recent years. Inside medieval or Baroque temples, researchers report much more favourable conditions for the preservation of various kinds of artefacts which have been placed inside coffins as grave goods, in particular organic materials such as silk, leather, and wood). Exploring the northern crypt of St. Nicolas church in Gniew, the researchers’ attention was focused on a child burial (aged 10–14). Despite the large number of exceptional finds supplied by this site, this one stood out as all the entire coffin space had been filled with silk bands and ribbons with green corrosion products on their surfaces. Preliminary examination showed that they were bunches of metal bands which had originally been meant to imitate plant branches. The decision was made to expand traditional technological analyses of archaeometrical tests of both textiles and metal appliqués. The material presented below is the first part of these analyses.

The article presents the results of archaeological field survey carried out by the Archaeological – Conservator’s Studio Alina Jaszewska on site 20 in Bnin in 2013. In the area with the width of 65 m, length: 75 m 60 features were uncovered related to population settlement of the Lusatian Culture (45), the Przeworsk culture (5) and from the early Middle Ages (10) and the modern times (2). The oldest phase of inhabiting this land alls in the Neolithic period, which links only single pieces of ceramics. The next, dated to the 5th EB and HaC, contains most numerous features forming a compact utility zone of the settlement and a set of 342 fragments of dishes. Late Roman period is the period of the residential feature and several utility buildings open in dispersion and 104 pieces of dishes. With regard to the early Middle Ages two phases are distinguished: older, connecting at least 5 features in a period from the 2nd half of the 7th –1 half of the 8th century, earlier to the 2nd half of the 8th century and 1st half of the 9th century. Dating an early medieval settlement uses the 14C analysis.
