Opis:
Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) - small sized, largely unrecognized, rudimentary, and an informal form of mining - occurs in more than 70 countries around the world and is mainly hailed for its socioeconomic benefits and reviled for its environmental devastation. As a result, many people are confused about the future of ASM. In Ghana, the government banned ASM in 2017 and formed a security taskforce drawn from the military and police to crack down on nomadic and local ASM workers who defy the ban. This approach is unsustainable, deals less with the fundamental problems, and increases poverty among the already impoverished local populations who depend on this type of mining as their only means of livelihood. To support the argument for sustainable reforms, revenue growth decomposition and growth accounting analyses were performed to determine the factors shaping ASM revenue over 25 years (1990-2016). Results show that production (gold output) is the most important factor that influences revenue growth from ASM, contrary to the usual view that the price of the metal is mainly responsible for the increase in revenue. Thus, increasing labor hours in ASM could significantly increase mining revenue, reduce unemployment, and improve local commerce. We strongly conclude that sustainable reforms such as increasing local participation in decision making, education and training, adoption of improved technology, strengthening regulatory institutions, legislation and enforcement of enactments, and the provision of technical support and logistics could ensure socio-environmental sustainability.

In this work, the establishment of a technology for HgI2 purification and crystal growth is described, aiming at a future application of this crystal as a room temperature radiation semiconductor detector. Two methods of crystal growth were studied in the development of this work: (1) physical vapor transport (PVT) and (2) saturated solution from dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) complexes. In order to evaluate the crystals obtained using each of these methods, systematic measurements were carried out for determining the stoichiometry, structure, orientation, surface morphology and impurity of the crystal. The influence of these physicochemical properties of the crystals developed was evaluated in terms of their performance as a radiation detector. The best response to radiation was found for the crystals grown by the PVT technique. Significant improvement in the performance of HgI2 radiation detector was found, purifying the crystal by means of two successive growths by the PVT technique.

Objectives The authors aimed to evaluate whether blood cadmium (B-Cd), lead (B-Pb) and mercury (B-Hg) in children differ regionally in 9 countries, and to identify factors correlating with exposure. Material and Methods The authors performed a cross-sectional study of children aged 7–14 years, living in 2007–2008 in urban, rural, or potentially polluted (“hot spot”) areas (ca. 50 children from each area, in total 1363 children) in 6 European and 3 non-European countries. The authors analysed Cd, Pb, and total Hg in blood and collected information on potential determinants of exposure through questionnaires. Regional differences in exposure levels were assessed within each country. Results Children living near industrial “hot-spots” had B-Cd 1.6 (95% CI: 1.4–1.9) times higher in the Czech Republic and 2.1 (95% CI:1.6–2.8) times higher in Poland, as compared to urban children in the same countries (geometric means [GM]: 0.13 μg/l and 0.15 μg/l, respectively). Correspondingly, B-Pb in the “hot spot” areas was 1.8 (95% CI: 1.6–2.1) times higher than in urban areas in Slovakia and 2.3 (95% CI: 1.9–2.7) times higher in Poland (urban GM: 19.4 μg/l and 16.3 μg/l, respectively). In China and Morocco, rural children had significantly lower B-Pb than urban ones (urban GM: 64 μg/l and 71 μg/l, respectively), suggesting urban exposure from leaded petrol, water pipes and/or coal-burning. Hg “hot spot” areas in China had B-Hg 3.1 (95% CI: 2.7–3.5) times higher, and Ecuador 1.5 (95% CI: 1.2–1.9) times higher, as compared to urban areas (urban GM: 2.45 μg/l and 3.23 μg/l, respectively). Besides industrial exposure, traffic correlated with B-Cd; male sex, environmental tobacco smoke, and offal consumption with B-Pb; and fish consumption and amalgam fillings with B-Hg. However, these correlations could only marginally explain regional differences. Conclusions These mainly European results indicate that some children experience about doubled exposures to toxic elements just because of where they live. These exposures are unsafe, identifiable, and preventable and therefore call for preventive actions.

In this study, an industrial fixed-bed for mercury adsorption from natural gas, was evaluated by mathematical models. Equilibrium isotherms, kinetics equations, and adsorption models were applied to available data to evaluate sorbent characteristics, and then study bed’s performance under different case studies. Models solutions are evaluated by linear-regression and coefficient of determination. The study confirmed that the system is characterized by irreversible equilibrium. Examining of kinetics equations indicated the inclusion of chemisorption and intra-particle diffusion as ratelimiting steps. Bohart-Adams model was found the best fitting model with good match between model’s assumptions and available bed’s information. Model prediction for bed’s design-basis was examined and found good match with manufacturer’s data-sheet.

Application of phytoremediation process for the purification of the environment, particularly of surface water (running or standing) may be a future alternative to existing standard purification methods, in particular for heavy metal removal. Numerous hyperaccumulators are known which can be used for the purification of water, soil or sediment such as Salvinia or Lemna lemnids, occurring in temperate climates, and thus on the territory of Poland. Ability of mercury accumulation by Salvinia natans and Lemna minor was analyzed. The phytoremediation ability of lemnids was compared depending on their origin - commercial (artificial) cultures and those obtained from the natural environment. Phytoremediation process was carried out for a period of 14 days for the concentration of 0.15 mg Hg/dm3 and 0.2 mg Hg/dm3. It was found that both Salvinia natans and Lemna minor show a significant increase in biomass in the presence of mercury, even up to 76% for Lemna minor and 40% for Salvinia natans. The result of this increase was incorporation a considerable amount of mercury in the tissues of plant. The quantity of mercury in plants biomass was in the range of 41.16-115.28 mg Hg/kg DM, while in the control samples - only 0.2-0.6 mg Hg/kg DM.

In this paper, we describe the characterization and application of adsorbent derived from the pyrolysis of cocoa shells, which is a natural source of adsorbent materials. The adsorbent that was used in this experiment is an environmentally friendly adsorbent that was prepared by the pyrolysis of cocoa shells. For 1.5 hours, the pyrolysis process was carried out at temperatures ranging from 300 to 380 °C. The adsorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and analysis with an X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyzer. Water-ash content and iodine absorption capacity were also determined in accordance with SNI 06-3730-1995. At a contact time of 90 minutes, the adsorption capacity of mercury ions was found to be 0.106 mg/gram. In this study, the adsorption of mercury ions with the adsorbent followed pseudo-second-order models with an R2 value of 0.9929.

Given the imminent deterioration of environmental quality, the accumulation of heavy metals in agricultural soil is one of the main concerns worldwide. Therefore, this research aimed to evaluate the adsorption potential of mercury and zinc by Sphagneticola trilobata. After 60 days, the distribution of heavy metals in the roots and the leaves of the plants was determined. As a result, the plant adsorbed mercury between 43.49 and 59.22%, and zinc between 32.68 and 64.37%. According to the bioconcentration and translocation factors of Sphagneticola trilobata obtained in the present work, the phytostabilizing capacity of mercury and zinc is like Eichhornia crassipes and Sorghum bicolor.

Exposure of concrete to high temperatures affects its mechanical properties by reducing the compressive strength, bending… etc. Factors reducing these properties have been focused on by several studies over the years, producing conflicting results. This article interested an important factor, that is the type of aggregates. For this, an experimental study on the behavior of concrete based on different types of aggregates: calcareous, siliceous and silico-calcareous subjected to high temperatures. In addition, the particle size distribution of the aggregates was chosen to be almost identical so that the latter does not affect the behavior of the concrete. Aggregates and concrete samples were subjected to a heating/cooling cycle of 300, 600 and 800°C at a speed of 1°C/ min. The mechanical and physical properties of concrete before and after exposure to high temperatures were studied. In addition, a microstructural study using a scanning electron microscope and a mercury porosimeter was performed. Thus, a comparative study between various researches on the mechanical properties of concrete exposed to high temperatures containing different types of aggregates was carried out. The compressive strength test results showed that the concrete based on siliceous aggregates (C-S) has better mechanical performance up to 300°C. However, above 300°C, the compressive strength decreases faster compared to calcareous-based concrete (C-C). According to the mercury porosimeter test, at 600°C, C-SC and C-S concretes have the highest number of pores compared to C-C concretes. The microstructure of concrete at high temperatures was influenced mainly by the aggregate’s types and the paste-aggregate transition zone. This study reinforces the importance of standardizing test procedures related to the properties of concrete in a fire situation so that all the results obtained are reproducible and applicable in other research.

Mercury is among the heavy metals that have been reported to cause devastating health problems worldwide. The present work was aimed at investigating the effects of mercury chloride on the cytomorphology of the peritoneal macrophages of rat. The current study characterizes the mechanism by which mercury, a toxic metal, induces death in rat macrophages. In mercury treated group significant numbers of peritoneal macrophages were found to be pyknotic. The cellular death was confirmed by membrane blebbing and membrane rupture. Percentages of cells showing membrane blebbing was increased significantly after treatment. The result indicated mercury induced toxicity may affect macrophage mediated immunity. So macrophage activation during heavy metal mediated reaction is an interesting area to be explored in future researches.

High concentrations of mercury (Hg), reaching astonishing values in two cases, have recently been detected in Middle and Late Triassic fossil reptile bones, housed for over 100 years in several Polish museum collections. Since no correlation between either the life modes of these taxa or their burial environment was observed, the studied contaminations seem to be associated with housing conditions. The specimens were kept for an extended amount of time in boxes, in which they were stored soon after finding. A proximity of mercury-containing materials, like mercury fulminate, and unstandardized conditions of storage and conservation of the remains may result in contamination of porous bone with mercury. A detailed knowledge about the housing history of old museum collections has great importance to their prospective studies.

Opis:
According to literature, intensive use of roads increases the level of soil pollution with individual metals and its extent depends on the type of soil, depth of sampling, and decreases with distance from the road. Supposition of possible soil contamination with mercury in the immediate vicinity of transportation routes results from reported mercury content in crude oil and the observed phenomenon of co-occurrence of mercury and oil-derived substances in soil. This work presents and analyses the results of research on mercury content in the surface layer of soil taken from the immediate vicinity of the southern Krakow ring road. Observations were conducted from 2003–2012 which allowed to show variability of mercury content in the soil over many years. The studies indicated varied distribution of mercury content in the soil, however, mercury content is generally at the same level on both sides of the road. Points with limited exposure to the impact of traffic, i.e. locations elevated above the road and those outside the acoustic screens were excluded from the analysis. Taking into account only the points in heavy traffic impact, slow accumulation of mercury in the top layers of the soil at a depth of 0.4–0.6 m was observed. This was particularly evident in the section of the road from Balice to Swoszowice, which has been located in an area of intense traffic for about 20 years. Average mercury content for all points ranged from 0.025 mg/kg in 2003 to 0.041 mg/kg in 2012. Averaged mercury content in soils from all points collected from other parts of the ring road also showed an upward trend and ranged from 0.026 mg/kg in 2003 to 0.036 mg/kg in 2012. Mercury content in soils collected at points with limited exposure to pollution and at a point with short exposure indicate no fluctuation over the years. Its content is low and is generally from 0.01 to 0.02 mg/kg in the areas that are not in the vicinity of the traffic. Studies of samples from a slightly greater depth of 0.8–1.0 m do not show any characteristic trend in mercury content in the soil. At this stage, long-term studies of soil in the vicinity of Krakow southern ring road do not allow to formulate conclusions regarding the estimation of the migration rate of mercury compounds in the aeration zone profile. They rather suggest the possibility of slow accumulation in the top layers of soil or very slow migration into the layers. In view of the entire research, it may be said that there are hints pointing to a very slow increase in the mercury content in the areas of long-term impact of heavy traffic. Interpretation of the research results, however, is definitely ambiguous. The observed values may be due to either the impact of heavy traffic, to other industrial factors or to natural heterogeneity of soil.

Mining and processing of the different natural resources like the coal has been started in the end of 18th century. Unfortunately, industry development without knowledge about its influence on the environment has been caused pollution on the environment. Unskillful after-processing waste management has been responsible for environment condition going worse, too. Results of these activities are present until now. Mercury is one of the most toxic chemical element which is very dangerous for natural environment and living organisms. Concentration of mercury from anthropogenic activity is especially high in the Silesian region, despite the tendency to decrease gases emission from the active heat and power stations. Silesian Voivodeship is still on the top of the list of voivodeships emitting toxic gases with mercury. Because mercury from air, soil and water has a negative effect on the human and animals life quality, we must to proceed with it a special way during its whole life cycle.

Opis:
Due to the toxicity of mercury a reduction of its emission is the objective of many legislative actions. In the case of power plants, there are well-known methods allowing for the removal of mercury from flue gases (post-combustion). In the case of households and small-scale combustion installations these methods are not used, which is caused by high investment costs. The most effective solution for this group of customers is the removal of mercury from coal (pre-combustion). This can be obtained in the washing and deshaling processes. The coal-cleaning processes which is commonly used in Polish coal preparation plants were analyzed, i.e. dense media separation, grain and fine coal jigging, flotation, as well as dry deshaling using the pneumatic vibrating FGX type separator. The first four are the washing processes and the last one is the dry separation process. The effectiveness of the coal cleaning process was assessed with the use of the RF factor (the ratio of the mercury content in the rejects to the mercury content in the feed coal). The obtained values of the RF factors show that mercury has a tendency to remain in the rejects, while higher values of the RF factors were obtained for the dry deshaling process (from 0.83 to 2.82 with the average of 1.15) than for the washing process (from 0.53 to 2.24 with the average of 1.50). This shows the possibility of the effective removal of mercury occurring in the adventitious inorganic constituents of the analyzed Polish hard coals. However, it should be noted, that the obtained results varied within a relatively high range, which should be explained by the difference in the mode of mercury occurrence in individual coals.
