Opis:
Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his/her own potential, can cope with the normal stress of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his/her community (World Health Organization, 2004). War and disasters have the greatest impact on mental health and psychosocial well-being. A considerable number of child refugees enter Europe to seek refuge from ongoing conflict and war in their home countries. Refugee children are at greater risk of psychological distress than non-refugee children and they may develop symptoms such as depression, PTSD, anxiety, physical problems or become aggressive. Trauma can impact the children’s physical well-being, cognitive development and psychological/emotional well-being and behavior. Therefore, these children are identified as having unique; however, urgent mental health needs requiring timely interventions. According to these findings, in this article the author is trying to explain the mental health problems and interventions among two refugee children (brother and sister) who stayed in the Transit Centre “Vinojug” in Gevgelija, Republic of Macedonia, two years ago. They had significant psychological disturbances such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, because they lost their home and their father. They have been here only with their pregnant mother. At the beginning they needed individual psychiatric or psychological support, but later also group psycho-social support. Verbal, art and game-based interventions proved effective in reducing the PTSD symptoms and depression. After that, the children showed positive emotions such as gratitude, hope, happiness, and optimism. At the same time they started to attend the local school and the first words in Macedonian language were: “Hello, how are you?” They have already learned the Macedonian language and counted in Macedonian; they knew how to ask for water and learned the basic terms. Hence, when they left the Transit Center with their mother, they were very sad: “Here we have many new friends who help and love us”. Our study provides a strong evidence base regarding the use of verbal and clinical interventions for PTSD and emotional and behavioral difficulties, respectively. Also, the main goal of the psychological workshop is stimulation of the copy strategies, resilience and psychosocial development through structured playful activities such as voice, movement, painting, drawing, song, sound.

The family can be a background of health crises and – at the same time – the greatest source of support for a child. It plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of disorders and increasing the psychological immunity of teenagers. The article presents a number of threats to the mental health of young people, derived from different research. Its main goal is to present the importance of the support system for parents and families in protection of children's mental health. Against this background, some parental errors and deficiencies are analysed as the reasons for ignoring the first symptoms of a child’s crisis. Support for the youth and their families should be provided not only from parents but also from teachers, pedagogues and their wider social environment. Many institutions, including medical staff, schools, governmental and non-governmental organisations may effectively support parents and caregivers in prevention and intervention in a situation of mental crisis. The article discusses the determinants of effective help for families experiencing mental health crises of children.

Purpose: To assess knowledge and attitude on mental disorder among adults in Putalibazar Municipality of Syangja district. Materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among adults of the aged group (18-64 years) in Putalibazar Municipality of Syangja district of Nepal. A semi-structured questionnaire was prepared for data collection. Similarly, the Likert scale was used to assess respondent’s attitude levels. SPSS 20 version and MS-Excel were used to analyze the data. The questionnaire was translated into the Nepali language during data collection. Results: The majority (57.3%) respondents responded mental disorder is a health condition involving changes in feeling and emotions. More than half (54.7%) respondents were having poor knowledge and the rest (45.3%) respondents were having a good level of knowledge on mental disorders. Respondents involved in a private job, government job and NGO/INGO have the highest, and housewives have the lowest level of knowledge regarding the mental disorder. Three-fifth respondents (59.7%) were having a negative attitude and the rest two-fifth respondents (40.3%) were having a positive attitude towards mental disorders. Also, the level of knowledge was having a statistically significant relationship with the education (p=0.02) and occupation (p=<0.001) of the respondents. The level of attitude was having a statistically significant relationship with the level of knowledge of the respondents (p=0.004). Conclusions: Good level of knowledge regarding mental disorders was lagging among respondents and a negative attitude seems high. There is an urgent need for public awareness among the adults living in this location. Mass media and anti-stigma campaigns can equally play a vital role to bring change in the attitude level of the respondents.

Abstract Background Representatives of helping professions who are working with socially maladjusted youths and children with developmental disorders are particularly exposed to occupational stress. The aim of the study was to evaluate mental and physical well-being, as well as their correlates and predictors in a group of employees working at youth educational centres and sociotherapy centres. Materials and Methods A total of 96 employees working at youth educational centres and sociotherapy centres took part in the study. The following psychometric tools were used: the Psychosocial Working Conditions Questionnaire, the Mini-COPE, the LOT-R, and the GSES. Results The results obtained indicate that people working in helping professions experience mental and physical health problems. Only 3% of the subjects declared they sleep all night. Over 40% and over 35% of the subjects estimate they suffer from low mood and irritation episodes, respectively, rather frequently or continually. Subjects with poorer mental health are more likely to use Helplessness, Avoidance behaviours, or Turning to religion to cope with stress. The strongest predictor of mental well-being is the sense of self-efficacy. Whereas, the strongest predictor of physical well-being is the ability to cope with stress by giving into the feeling of Helplessness.   Conclusions The study demonstrated poor mental and physical well-being of the subjects. A statistically significant correlation was found between sex and the level of mental and physical health. Employees working at youth educational centres and sociotherapy centres with better mental and physical well-being had a stronger sense of self-efficacy and a higher level of life optimism.

Today, the more trainers are satisfied with their work, the more they are encouraged to work harder and also the more the efficiency of schools rises. On the other hand, dissatisfaction and low levels of the performances of teachers derive in turn from their lack of satisfaction. As previous researches show, dissatisfied employees give up their jobs and leave the organization. And satisfied employees enjoy mental health and live longer, and being satisfied and happy can affect the employees beyond their offices and have an effect on their personal lives. On that account, this research aims to examine the impact that job satisfaction has on the mental health of teachers. The method used in this study was a descriptive-explanatory one. The research sample consists of 332 teachers in the province of Mazandaran, Iran. The dare were collected using questionnaires and the results showed that there is a meaningful relationship between job satisfaction and mental health of the studied teachers.

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between workaholism and mental health among 126 Polish academic workers. The participantsʼ mean age was 45.9 years, 51.6% of them were women. The participants completed 2 questionnaires: the work addiction risk test and the general health questionnaire. Even though 66% of the subjects were classified in the group of moderate-to-high risk of workaholism, the overall state of mental health was categorized as average. The results revealed that workaholism was associated with poorer mental health. Employees with higher levels of workaholism had worse state of health, i.e., more somatic symptoms, higher levels of anxiety, insomnia, social dysfunction and symptoms of depression. Emotional arousal/perfectionism was the strongest predictor of the state of general health and was mostly responsible for harmful effects on mental health. However, the general effect of workaholism on health was not as strong as expected.

There are data showing clinical experience as disadvantageous for the quality of mental health assessment. On the other hand, according to American Psychological Association standards of evidence-based practice in psychology, clinical experience is one of the fundamental factors in professional psychological practice. The paper presents this controversy in the context of relevant psychological knowledge and empirical data. The conclusions are as follows: (1) the valuable input that clinical experience may bring to mental health assessment is intuitive thinking; (2) habitual cognitive errors and mindlessness, which are the possible side effects of long-lasting diagnostic practice, can be reduced by means of careful self-monitoring of the assessment process. A practical self-monitoring procedure is suggested.

Adolescence is a time of particular susceptibility to mental disorders. A programme aimed at facilitating emotional development in teenagers might be an important element of prophylactic psychopathology targeting young people. The activities proposed here are group activities and have several aims: to develop the ability to become self-aware regarding one's emotions and regulate their intensity; to foster an attitude of caring for oneself; and to teach problem-solving. What is of particular significance is shaping young people’s habits in being proactive in their personal development.

In order to help and save the lives of seafarers, the researchers conducted a developmental research to formally create a booklet in e-copy that is a simple, situational, and handy source of knowledge. This study aimed to identify the component of the booklet based on the study of Sarinas et al. [1] in terms of the factors affecting the seafarers’ mental health and strategies they applied to counteract these issues. The ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) model was utilized to develop a booklet. A content validated researcher-made instruments were used to measure the satisfaction of seafarers over the booklet and the acceptability of the experts on the booklet with a reliability index of 0.91 using Cronbach alpha. The content analysis was employed to determine the factors affecting seafarers’ mental health and the strategies to counteract these factors. Meanwhile, frequency, percentage, rank, mean, and standard deviation were used as the statistical tools. Results revealed that, there are 30 factors included in the booklet in the Analysis phase with various situational strategies to combat the factors affecting the mental health of seafarers. Moreover, in the Design phase, there were 10 factors added with corresponding strategies emanated from instructors who were seafarers previously and from experts in mental health. In the Development phase, the booklet made use of the 4 E (Engage, Explore, Explain, and Evaluation) while for the Implementation phase, the e-copy of booklets were given to seafarers as well as the evaluation form for them to assess the booklet and indicate their level of satisfaction. In the Evaluation phase, it shows that seafarers’ level of satisfaction towards the booklet is “Very High” which means that seafarers find the overall appearance and content of the supplemental learning material excellent.
