Henry James was not a sentimental writer. However, in his later books we can find traces of repressed emotions and melancholy. One of the most intriguing literary documents showing the nostalgic strain in James is his collection The American Scene (1907), a record of the novelist’s return to the USA after a twenty-years-old absence. It contains various manifestations of James’s nostalgia – for example, his memories of New York and his melancholic recollections of the places connected with his youth. Also, it shows James’s convoluted rhetoric of memory as a space of repression and displacement as well as his unwillingness to address these issues in a direct fashion.

The article examines the notion of bovarism which can be seen in the work of the most outstanding Russian writers of the second half of the 19th century, for example Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Anton Chekhov. It seems that the source of bovaristic attitude, which is culturally, socially and psychologically motivated, is the extremity of the Russian character prone to self-sacrifice, offering and suffering, as well as cruelty and sadism. A Russian variant of bovarism is boredom and melancholy.

The article is an attempt of a comparative theoretical reflection on melancholy, showing how this theme exists in the literature of different nations. The considerations were included in the form of “excerpts” on the model of the Czeslaw Milosz’s work Excerpts from Useful Tomes. Each excerpt is preceded by a brief interpretive-informing comment, which just throws light on the text and gives voice to the poems themselves. Due to the specifics of this form of expression, only poetic texts were included in the area of research. The aim of this article is to draw attention to the omnipresence of melancholy and show different varieties of melancholy writing taking into account the convergences and divergences in the poetic representations of this theme in the world literature.

The article discusses the theme of melancholy in Polish prose of the 21st century, using four contemporary novels – Pokolenie Ikea [The IKEA generation](2012) by Piotr C., Wszyscy jesteśmy hipsterami [We are all hipsters] (2016) by Dariusz Radecki, Melanżeria [Melangery] (2011) by Anna Klara Majewska and Za pięć rewolta [Five minutes to a revolt] (2011) by Dawid Kain – as conspicuous examples of its presence. The author suggests that due to the increased pace of social and technological changes the generation of thirty-year-olds experiences a feeling of melancholy, formerly characteristic for elderly people and analyses the protagonists of the novels selected to present how they cope with a reality that does not fulfil them.

Analiza relacji transtekstualnych (Genette), a w szczególności roli motta „Pani Bovary to ja” w Postrzyżynach Bohumila Hrabala, wskazuje na obecność motywów charakterystycznych dla melancholii. Cytat z Flauberta całkowicie zmienia interpretacyjną optykę i pozwala patrzeć na główną bohaterkę powieści Hrabala również jako alter ego Emmy. W tym osobowościowym rozchwianiu przejawia się bowaryzm, czyli „zdolność postrzegania siebie innym, niż się jest” (de Gaultier), w którym zawiera się narracyjna strategia czeskiego pisarza.

The aim of the analysis is to present the film (Late Afternoon) by Gilles Renard as a study of melancholy. Both the plot and the cinematographic means used to shape the form of this short film correspond with the theoretical texts by Julia Kristeva and Melanie Klein on depression in women. The author of the text considers Late Afternoon as a feminist and affirmative film, strongly inspired by the aesthetics of Krzysztof Kieślowski’s cinematic output.

The article “(…) for I am still able to scatter and collect myself”. On the poetry of Roman Honet is not a compilation of texts written so far on the output of the author of piąte królestwo. Neither is it an attempt at general analysis of his poetry. In this poetry, a significant motif (since the collection „serce”) is loss – it is a point of departure to take up considerations and show how it functions in the poetry of Roman Honet. The author of the sketch focuses mainly on three poem collections: „serce”, baw się… and piąte królestwo. These are author interpretations.

W moim artykule proponuję spojrzenie na zjawisko samotności w kulturze, jako nie tylko możliwość badania doświadczenia intymnego, przeżywanego w liczbie pojedynczej, z odwołaniem do licznych w kulturze opisów tego stanu. Chciałabym raczej zastanowić się, czy mając wiedzę na temat tego doświadczenia, nabywamy kompetencje na temat kultury, w której zaistniała samotność? Wsparciem w opisywaniu przestrzeni samotności w kulturze jest dla mnie dyskurs melancholijny, dla którego naturalnym środowiskiem była przestrzeń samotności oraz konfrontacja z ostatecznością. Dla potrzeb refleksji uruchamiam moją definicję samotności, jako przestrzeni między życiem i śmiercią. Owa przestrzeń daje możliwość jednostce odczuwania energii życia i obecności śmierci. Nawet w takich monetach życia człowieka (młodość), kiedy jednostka nie jest do końca świadoma swojej roli w społeczeństwie, a jest na etapie krystalizacji swojej tożsamości. W tym wypadku samotność, jako przestrzeń między byłaby pewnym stanem zawieszenia, który przygotowuje jednak do aktywnego, samodzielnego życia we wspólnocie. W artykule odwołuję się do postulatu niemieckiego kulturoznawcy Thomasa Macho, aby traktować doświadczenie samotności jako kontekst, sposobność, praktykowania technik kulturowych, oraz do przestrzeni heterotopijnej w ujęciu Michela Foucaulta.
In my article I suggest looking at the phenomenon of solitude in culture not only as an opportunity to study an intimate and individual experience, to which numerous descriptions refer. I would rather consider whether possessing knowledge about this experience we acquire competencies regarding the culture in which this solitude has occurred. The discourse of melancholy, for which the space of solitude and confrontation with the ultimate has been the natural environment, supports me in describing the space of solitude in culture. For the purposes of reflection, I initiate my own definition of solitude as a space between life and death. That space allows the individual to feel the energy of life and the presence of death, even in such moments of human life (youth) when the individual is not fully aware of their role in society, and is in the process of crystallizing their identity. In this case, solitude as a space between would be a state of suspension, which, however, prepares for active, independent life in the community. In this article, I refer to the postulate of the German culture researcher Thomas Macho in order to treat the experience of solitude as a context, an opportunity to practise techniques of culture, as well as to heterotopic space as defined by Michel Foucault.

In Fellini’s Roma, the famous sequence in which ancient frescoes are discovered during the construction of the subway is a key scene and an allegory of his filmic and artistic approach. But Fellini’s boldness goes further. During the sequence, the filmmaker, using a somewhat fantastic shortcut, breaks through the wall that separates the world of the living and the forgotten world of ancient figures. He thus uses metalepsis at the heart of the film. Figures who were about to fade away under the effect of the outside world come again to life in his film, just as, in Virgil, the souls of the dead, grouped on the banks of the river Lethe, are waiting in the hope of returning to the world of the living. The film has often been compared to a patchwork, or a mosaic, imaging a complex and stratified city. But rather than a mosaic, we should speak of threshold crossings, that is to say rhetorical effects, amongst which the main one could be metalepsis. Fellini’s Roma is not only a melancholic and hectic fresco of a visionary director, but also an ever-moving network of initiatory paths. Through the Fellinian shifts and transgressions, it is the incessant renewal of Rome which is shown.

This article presents characteristics of the selected aspects of the creative potential in older persons. In addition to  specific aptitudes or gifts, cognitive qualities such as intelligence, knowledge and experience have been indicated as  the components of creative potential. Furthermore, the importance of a developed lifestyle at earlier stages of life has been highlighted,  along with the attitude towards one’s  aging, spiritual sensibility and motivation for  creative work. An attempt has been made to illustrate distinguishing characteristics of works by outstanding creators in the latter parts of  their lives. More often than not, critics cited the following characteristics of creative persons: individualism, inclination towards harkening back to the past, melancholic spirits and thought orientation regarding transcendent reality

The present article is divided into two parts: the first focuses on the affections of the soul in general, while the second part investigates the case of melancholy, as it is studied from Aristotle and the Stoics to Galen. The main point of the first part is an analysis of the Chrysippean treatise On the Affections of the Soul as it appears in the Galenic treatise On the Doctrines of Hippocrates and Plato. The analysis identifies several Chrysippean influences from Plato and Aristotle regarding the psyche. In the second part, the case of melancholy is analyzed through the pseudo-Aristotelian treatise Problem XXX 1. The discussion shows the common points between the Aristotelian text and the Chrysippean fragments regarding the issue of melancholy. This article aims to bring to light the evolution of the phenomenon of melancholy in Galen’s thought, which is connected with the study of both medical and philosophical texts already existing before him.

Niniejszy artykuł stanowi krótki przegląd dyskursów melancholii, mając na szczególnym względzie omówienie obecności i roli kobiet w tym dyskursie. Autorka artykułu omawia m.in. książkę Urszuli Chowaniec Melancholic Migrating Bodies in Contemporary Polish Women’s Writing (2015), rozpatrywaną jako tekst w pewnej mierze inspirowany własnymi przeżyciami, w której przedstawiona została współczesna polska literatura kobieca, a szczególnie motywy ciał nomadycznych, melancholijnych i „zrujnowanych”. Artykuł podsumowano, przedstawiając pokrótce propozycję Judith Butler dotyczącą melancholii płci jako alternatywny dyskurs o kobiecej melancholii.
The paper constitutes a brief overview of the history of melancholy, with a particular focus given to the presence and the role of women in melancholy discourses. It also includes a discussion of the book Melancholic Migrating Bodies in Contemporary Polish Women’s Writing (2015), in which the author Urszula Chowaniec examines the contemporary Polish women’s fiction, in particular the motifs of nomadic, melancholic and „ruined” bodies. Moreover, Judith Butler’s concept of gender melancholy is also invoked as an alternative discourse of melancholy and femininity.

Until the 18th century, melancholy functioned in people’s consciousness like a disease or a genetic condition. During the Enlightenment, some changes allowed to perceive it as emotional states, without any medical connotations. Among the many works, in which melancholy is mentioned, one can find several types of it, although everyone describing it, treated it in a personal way. A few of the most common new terms are sweet melancholy (douce mélancolie), boredom (ennui ), vapours (vapeurs), spleen, consomption, reverie (rêverie). Thanks to the sensitivity that was fashionable in the 18th century, emotional dilemmas were perceived not only negatively, and sometimes even desirable.

The paper aims at showing the link between Andrzej Stasiuk’s selected prose texts and the beauty of melancholy. The way in which melancholy functions in literature in the period of postmodernity was the starting point for our considerations. We have focused on the way this notion has been radically changed by postmodernism and how it has been deprived of its spiritual importance. The beauty of melancholy is part of Stasiuk’s novel in two ways. First and foremost, this concerns the texts about travelling in which it seems to be a reflection on reality and is inextricably linked with the categories of memory and existence. As stressed by Stasiuk, melancholy has its root in suspicion concerning reality tactics. It may be regarded as ‘melancholy of the way’ and in this sense it is accompanied by a spiritual burden directed against postmodernism. In turn, in Opowieści galicyjskie and Zima it is equated with the boredom and humdrum nature of small-town life. Deprived of its spiritual being it manifests itself as an example of existential torpor and stagnation which are part and parcel of Stasiuk’s characters who – in turn – are painfully stricken by bad fate and function thoughtlessly in lives which they fail to run away from.
