Opis:
Considering the changes in media and in society that have occurred since the heyday of the Democratic Corporatist Model, with its strong emphasis on institutionalized self-regulation of the press (Hallin & Mancini, 2004), this article examines changes in attitudes towards media accountability measures among policymakers. Attitudes prevalent in the peak years of political pressure on the media system in the Democratic Corporatist countries are compared with the attitudes existing today. The data studied are printed minutes of media debates in the Swedish Parliament in the 1960s and similar debates in recent years, Sweden being a typical country for the model. The comparison indicates that both the views on media defi ciencies and the views on remedies have changed over the last 40 years. Accountability measures are still in demand, although more through governance than from government.

Opis:
News coverage has a major impact on the interpretation of news events and the response towards these events by public and policy makers. The study intended to investigate the extent of children's rights representation in newspapers in Pakistan. The aim was to determine the coverage, type of the News and level of placement in four selected newspapers (Dawn, The Express Tribune, Jang, and Nawa-i-waqt). A content analysis of 316 news editions of selected samples was conducted over the duration of one year (November 2017 to October 2018). The purpose of content analysis is to provide advocates with a comprehensive basis for how children’s problems are presented in the news. A systematic sampling technique is used for the collection of data. The Nawa-i-waqt newspaper covered the maximum news stories (792 in number) as compared to the other dailies. Furthermore, most of the stories about children were found on the inside pages of newspapers which shows that children’s issues received minimal coverage. This paper argues that the press should take more responsibility by adequately informing children and making them aware, so that the attention of the government and the public can be aimed at tackling child problems in society.

Wybory prezydenckie w USA w 2020 r. przeszły do historii. Cechowały je: rekordowa frekwencja, rekordowa liczba głosów korespondencyjnych oraz ogłoszenie zwycięstwa przez przegranego kandydata – wówczas jeszcze urzędującego prezydenta. Media amerykańskie, spodziewając się dezinformacji wyborczej, wykazały się odpowiedzialnością i konsekwentnie informowały o braku zwycięzcy w sytuacji niepoliczenia znacznej liczby głosów w kluczowych stanach. Twitter za sprawą D. Trumpa stał się jedną z głównych form komunikacji prezydenta ze społeczeństwem. Stąd szczególnie istotne były zabezpieczenia wprowadzone przez ten portal dotyczące przedwczesnego ogłoszenia zwycięstwa. Artykuł, wykorzystując krytyczną analizę dyskursu, na podstawie materiałów głównych stacji telewizyjnych (CNN, Fox News) oraz twittów Trumpa, bada tezę, że odpowiedzialność mediów tradycyjnych oraz społecznościowych w 2020 roku uniemożliwiła doprowadzenie do ogromnych niepokojów społecznych oraz doprowadziła do pokojowej zmiany władzy.
The U.S. presidential elections in 2020 went down in history for many reasons, including the record turnout, the record number of mail votes, and the announcement of victory by the losing candidate, the incumbent president. The American media expected this post-election disinformation and behaved responsibly by consistently reporting the lack of a winner when a significant number of votes remained uncounted in the key states. Twitter, thanks to D. Trump, became one of the main forms of communication between the president and the public. Therefore, the precautions introduced by this portal regarding the premature announcement of victory were particularly important. The analysis is based on the broadcasts of the main American TV stations (CNN, Fox News) and Trump’s tweets. Using critical discourse analysis, we examine the thesis that the responsibility of traditional and social media in 2020 made enormous social unrest impossible and led to a peaceful change of power.

John Paul II emphasized the role of culture in the process of integration in Europe. It is culture and values that allow to find and strengthen the common identity of Europe. John Paul II believed them to be more important than economics and institutional ways of integration. Mass media play the important part in today’s culture. The press, radio, television and other electronic media are sources of knowledge, places for exchanging ideas and sharing experiences. The most important collocations of media in papal thought are: service (duty), responsibility, dialogue and formation. Media should serve people by showing them the objective truth, defending human rights, promoting freedom, justice, solidarity and peace. The responsibility of mass media concerns reliability and integrity, care for customers, especially young and disdained. Dialogue, as John Paul II perceived it, has several dimensions: exchanging ideas and finding the best way of development, sharing experiences and abolishing discriminatory stereotypes, ecumenical and inter-religious meetings. Those assignments should be conducted by personal development of a journalist, which includes professional skills and formation: ethical and spiritual, courage and wisdom. John Paul II saw a great role of social communication in the process of integration, especially in the important task of uniting Europe. The truth and dialogue provided by responsible and reliable media should help people abolish the walls in people’s hearts and establish united Europe open to all inhabitants, who differ but are connected by love, values and culture.

The paper contains an attempt to reconstruct Tomasz Goban-Klas´ views on the ethics of journalism and media. What was first discussed was the central element of the theoretical construction of the ethical field of the media - the triangle: freedom, responsibility and professionalism. Then the evolution of this idea in the context of evolution and social-communication metamorphosis of the media was traced. It has been found that subjectivity of the human being and media institutions has currently changed to such an extent that the most appropriate description and assessment of media ethics will be to show it in the logic of non-zero-sum games as referred to the collective entity creating the media communication system.

This paper aims to present a theoretically-empirical reflection on the citizen-oriented model of journalism developed from the social responsibility of the media paradigm. The main indicator of that model is the significant attention paid by journalists to the current perspective of the citizens (in terms of their expectations, demands, actions), to educate citizens about their rights and obligations, as well as to encourage people to actively participate in public debate. The study was conducted under the framework of the international comparative project “Journalistic Role Performance Around the Globe”, launched and coordinated by C. Mellado and L. Hellmueller from Texas State University, USA (www.journalisticperformance.org). The results of empirical research (an analysis of the contents of four Polish daily newspapers) revealed that Polish journalism insufficiently incorporates the model of civic service, one of whose most rudimentary aims is the support, education and representation of the citizens’ interests.

Kodeksy etyki dziennikarskiej nie zostały napisane na czasy globalnego zagrożenia dla zdrowia i życia wielu ludzi. Nie ma w nich prostych i jasnych wskazówek, jak relacjonować wydarzenia, takie jak pandemia koronawirusa. A wyzwań jest mnóstwo, bo newsy to teraz opowieść o walce lekarzy i pacjentów z chorobą, o walce z czasem, by znaleźć szczepionkę; o walce pracodawców i rządów, by powstrzymać kryzys gospodarczy. Rzetelne, uczciwe i odpowiedzialne dziennikarstwo jest teraz ważne być może bardziej niż kiedykolwiek wcześniej. W artykule przedstawiono główne zagrożenia i wymagania etyczne dla dziennikarzy pracujących w czasach epidemii.
Codes of journalistic ethics were not written for the times of global threat to the lives and health of many people. There are no clear and straightforward words of advice on how to report on coronavirus pandemic. There are however many challenges, as news services nowadays are a story about medical staff and patients fighting the disease, about race with time to find a vaccine, and about employers and governments battling to stop the economic crisis. Reliable, honest and responsible journalism is perhaps more important now than it ever was. This article presents the main risks and ethical challenges that journalists are facing in times of pandemic.

The main purpose of this article is a brief presentation of the conception of the new media in contrast to the traditional media, such as press, the radio and television. The author follows to show the advantages of the new media as devices in interpersonal communication, information distribution, shaping of viewpoints, entertainment. The new media are also a stimulus to take social actions. The article shortly presents the main ideas of Corporate Social Responsibility and its influence on business actions taken to contribute to increasing social awareness and benefits coming from such actions taken by companies and global corporations.
Głównym celem poniższego artykułu jest ogólna charakterystyka nowych mediów oraz wymienienie cech, które odróżniają je od tzw. mediów tradycyjnych, wykazując obszary do których nowe media są w stanie dotrzeć skuteczniej. Autor stara się także zwięźle scharakteryzować wybrane zagadnienia CSR Corporate Social Responsibility, które są istotne dla budowania nowoczesnej gospodarki, polityki społecznej oraz polityki ekologicznej. Wskazuje także informacyjną oraz stymulującą rolę nowych mediów w wspieraniu działań polityki CSR oraz podaje wybrane działania w ramach CSR podejmowane przez firmy i globalne korporacje.

Our perception of reality is subjective. Each person perceives reality in a different way, experiencing only a fraction of it. And yet we believe, or rather we want to believe, that there is an objective reality. Today one needs an extensive knowledge so as not to get lost in the hotchpotch of information provided by the modern media, and to find the information essential for us. Subconsciously, we are looking for an authority to provide us with an interpretation of reality, explanation, personal opinions and even instructions on how to understand it. Mass media have taken up this role in the modern, technologically developed society. The belief in the omniscient media drives people to perceive the media-generated images and news as more real than their own life experiences. Not without a reason the media consciously resort to manipulation. There is a conviction that one can rule over people by gaining power over their imagination. An average receiver of the 21st century media is a perfect target for the modern television, Internet, video games, etc; overworked, tired and stressed, s/he will trust the media and the information they provide. And again we come back to the question of whether it is the media that create the world, or is it the world that shapes the mass media? Whatever the answer, we arrive at further questions: the question of responsibility in the communication process, responsibility for spreading honest and reliable information, and responsibility for creating social relationships.

Analizowana przez autora realizacja przez media prawa do krytyki władzy napotyka w praktyce na spore trudności. Niezależnie od powszechnie akceptowanej i gwarantowanej konstytucyjnie wolności słowa istnieje jednak wiele barier ograniczających dziennikarską swobodę wypowiedzi. Chodzi przede wszystkim o bariery prawne oraz etyczne. Koncepcja materialnej (absolutnej) wolności mediów nie została bowiem zrealizowana przez ustawodawstwo żadnego z krajów europejskich. W opinii autora odpowiedzialność karna za nadużywanie wolności wypowiedzi nie ogranicza prawa obywateli do krytyki władzy, ale czyni je znacznie bardziej skutecznym, jeśli towarzyszy jej odpowiedzialność za słowo.
In the article the author analyzes the implementation of the media right to criticize the government. This regulation faces in practice considerable difficulties. Regardless of the widely accepted and constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech, there are many barriers for the journalistic freedom of expression. It is all about the legal and ethical barriers. The concept of material freedom of the media was not in fact implemented by the legislation of the European states. In the author’s opinion, the threat of criminal liability for the abuse of freedom of expression, does not limit the right of citizens to criticize the government, but it makes the right to criticize much more effective if is accompanied by a responsibility for word.
