Mary Shelley’s iconic Frankenstein is a pivotal work in the Western canon. Since its publication in 1818, the novel has been re-written and adapted many times. Shelley’s magnum opus sublimely evokes the postlapsarian condition of the fallen, while also capturing the imminent fear of technology, scientific progress and artificial procreation. The paper aims to explore the Frankenstein legacy and the development of Frankensteinian motifs in Atwood’s speculative fiction. More precisely, the paper focuses on The Handmaid’s Tale (1985), The MaddAddam Trilogy – Oryx and Crake (2003), The Year of the Flood (2009), MaddAddam (2013), and The Heart Goes Last (2015), analyzing how postmodern literature recycles and incorporates elements from Frankenstein to reflect (on) contemporary anxieties and to insist on the fluid discursivity of monstrosity.

Powieść ta może stanowić kontekst interpretacyjny podczas omawiania tekstów pochodzących ze starożytności.
The protagonists created by the Canadian writer Margaret Atwood are characterized by a constant struggle for survival, searching for identity and the voice that was taken away from them for various reasons. One of such protagonists is Penelope, immortalized in history thanks to Homer and addicted to the story of a man – her husband Odysseus. The article aims to present Penelopiada not only as a reinterpretation of a myth but also as an interesting reading proposal for high school students, which can be presented as an interpretative context when discussing texts from antiquity.

In her fifth dystopian novel, The Heart Goes Last, Margaret Atwood portrays North America in the not so far future, in the wake of a global economic crisis. Parts of the country are in the state of complete chaos, subjected to a ruthless gang rule. The solution to the system's breakdown comes in the form of the socio-economic experiment that requires from its participants relinquishing their freedom as every other month they will spend in prison. The seemingly preposterous experimental project enables Atwood to explore principal questions about the limits of our freedom in the times of an economic crisis or a neoliberal model of economy. The satirical form the novel takes, especially towards its end, helps the writer to decry people's over-willingness to give away their freedom and civil liberties in exchange for happy, uninterrupted consumption. The following article aims to demonstrate that the notion of freedom and free will permeate The Heart Goes Last, which is, in that respect, a politically and socially engaged satire.

This paper examines four discursive strategies: colonizing, animalizing, infantalizing and (plant) vegetative that characters in Margaret Atwood’s MaddAddam trilogy use to name the Crakers, post-humans with modified DNA structure. In discussing them, I expose a dehumanizing effect this seemingly neutral processes of naming and describing have. The interpretative findings discussed in this paper constitute a response to largely anthropocentrically oriented extensive criticism on Atwood’s writing. By questioning the neutrality of the narrative through a postcolonial reading of the trilogy, I argue that MaddAddam challenges the divisions between human and non-human. The paper investigates whether these dehumanizing discursive tactics of animalization, colonization, infantilism or vegetation, which are fundamentally oppressive, can become a means of resistance.

A critical essay on Margaret Atwood's 'The Penelopiad.The Myth of Penelope and Odysseus'. An attempt made by Atwood to reread the myth of Penelope might be easily disregarded as a trivial postmodernist pastiche bearing too much resemblance to school assignments. Yet it is argued here that the novel deserves more serious consideration as belonging to the genre of 'historicizing writings' instead of being a mere literary game, since its true value lies in Atwood's ability to evoke the problems of the present by referring to the past.

The Handmaid’s Tale is a story where women’s rights have been revoked, and thus women are back in gender roles taken to the extreme, with no rights, no opinions, and no cosmetics or beauty products of any kind. A once independent woman is turned into an object, a ‘vessel’ whose sole purpose is to bear children to save the population. It is a dystopian nightmare which subjugates and subdues women to the point of sexual slavery, language impacts and indoctrinates them in a psychologically-damaging manner, and denies them the basic freedoms which most women in Western civilization take for granted (Porfert 1). The aim of this paper is to arguing the representation of feminist dystopia and the issues related to female predicament, their submissiveness to men in the novels. It will draw a final picture of women’s struggle for freedom. It has been asserted that woman's identity is pushed aside and even erased in the patriarchal social structure of theocratic states.

In her dystopian dark comedy The Heart Goes Last (2015), Margaret Atwood openly refers to Jeremy Bentham’s concept of the Panopticon. The future world depicted in her novel is filled with violence and deprived of both human bonds and hope. Hence, being contained, monitored and - after Foucault - disciplined and punished appears to be the characters’ last resort. Surveillance tempts both sexes as it is politically correct and universal, and it does not privilege one group of people over the other. The article discusses the dystopian vision of the near future as created by Atwood in her 2015 novel, with direct references to the conception of the Panopticon, both in its original meaning proposed by Bentham, and - more significantly - in Michel Foucault’s reading of this idea as a metaphor of the way western societies are organized.

The paper Sex and Oppresion in Cyberspace: A Speculative Vision in Margaret Atwood’s “Oryx and Crake” Novel analyzes Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake in reference to the issues of violence and sex as present in the cyberspace. Before focusing on these two problems, generic outline is introduced, starting from the commonly used categories of utopia/eutopia/dystopia to those more closely associated with Atwood herself, i.e. speculative fiction and utopia. Violent internet games and explicit pornography act in the novel as sign of ethical reevaluation, which in the long run leads the novel’s world to the verge of a total catastrophe. At the same time, the overabundance of such on-line stimuli becomes synonymous with our contemporary culture of exhaustion.

Niniejsze studium to socjologiczna analiza dystopii literackich  kanadyjskiej powieściopisarki Margaret Atwood: trylogii MaddAddam, Opowieści podręcznej a także jej kontynuacji, opublikowanych w 2020 roku  Testamentów. Za kluczowe przyjmuje się tu te  zagadnienia i konteksty,  które w sposób wyraźny i jednoznaczny budują obraz świata społecznego zarysowanego w powieściach kanadyjskiej pisarki, odczytywane będą przez pryzmat socjologii literatury. Zaś podstawowym pytanie brzmi – jak przedstawia się struktura świata społecznego w omawianych powieściach? Odpowiedzi na nie autorka będzie poszukiwała odwołując się, między innymi do koncepcji Roberta K. Mertona odnoszącej się do typów indywidualnego przystosowania się jednostek do zmieniających się warunków struktury społecznej.
This article presents a sociological analysis of the literary dystopias of Canadian novelist Margaret Atwood: the MaddAddam trilogy and The Handmaid’s Tale and its 2020 sequel Testaments. Maria Anna Banaś regards as key issues and contexts those that clearly and unambiguously build Atwood’s image of the social world, and which Banaś reads through the prism of the sociology of literature. The basic question is, What is the structure of the social world in Atwood’s works? Banaś seeks answers by referring, among other ideas, to Robert K. Merton’s types of adaptation of individuals to the changing social structure.

The aim of the following paper is to analyse Margaret Atwood’s 2009 speculative fiction novel The Year of the Flood, drawing from the theories of such ecofeminist critics as Maria Mies and Karen Warren. The paper discusses the parallels between the exploitation of nature and animals as well as the oppression of women in the capitalist patriarchy. It explores the construction of women, nature and animals as dominated Others. Special attention is paid to the metaphors binding women and nature as well as to the development of ecological consciousness in female characters. Atwood undoubtedly criticises capitalism as well as genetic engineering, which contribute to the pollution and devastation of nature as well as have negative impact on human beings.

Niniejsza interpretacja dwóch kanadyjskich klasyków – opowiadania Margaret Atwood pt. „Śmierć na tle krajobrazu” i powieści Emmy Donoghue zatytułowanej „Pokój” – jest w rzeczywistości pretekstem do rozważań o kanadyjskiej tęsknocie za, i strachu przed otwartą przestrzenią. The article presents the results of a comparative analysis of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale and essays written by Herta Müller, the most famous Romanian dissident and the recipient of the 2009 Noble Prize in literature. The point of departure for the analysis is the reference to the Romanian regime of Ceaușescu contained in the Historical Notes on The Handmaid’s Tale, which constitute an integral part of Atwood’s novel. Juxtaposing the aforementioned novel with Herta Müller’s essays, the article reveals conspicuous parallels between the actual experience of living under a regime, omnipresent in the texts of the Romanian-born German author, and the dystopian narrative of Offred, the protagonist of The Handmaid’s Tale. The article examines the texts through the lens of the poetics of experience, that is, it treats them as a record of an individual experience which has the power to influence the reader through emphatic involvement.

Opis:
Taking into account the broadness of the SF genre, the article commences with examining the difference between speculative fiction and science fiction, as outlined specifically by Donna J. Haraway and Margaret Atwood. Drawing on Atwood’s understanding of speculative genre, the paper analyses two separate but intertwined artistic forms: a classic short story with embedded dialogue and a comic book / graphic novel based upon the extended version of the earlier narrative. The short story “Oursonette” was written by Atwood as a part of a national project of artists commemorating the sesquicentennial anniversary of the Canadian Confederation. It depicts Victory in Europe Day, 8 May 1945, from the perspective of Canada and its impact upon the publishing of “Canadian whites,” otherwise known as WECA comic books. Partially black-and white War Bears (2019), referring to the tradition of “Canadian whites” comics, is a modern graphic novel, co-authored with Ken Steacy, which essentially uses the plot of Atwood’s “Oursonette” as the foundation for drawing an expanded story that precedes and follows the original. The narrative is not simply elaborated, a new dimension of visual imagery and a significant layer of intersectionality have changed its meaning to a large extent. The article analyses those alterations in detail to come to a conclusion as to whether they are beneficial or redundant to the original form and content. Thematically, the paper probes the gendered dimension of Atwood’s (and partly Steacy’s) rendering of the superheroine subcategory, with regard to SF genre and its literary convention. The article compares how this issue is represented in both examined literary genres: a narrative by Atwood and a comic book / graphic novel by Atwood and Steacy.
