The article offers a study of two Proustian metaphors: “a living barometer” and “the little barometric figure”. After a brief reminder of the role of time in The Search for Lost Time, we move on to an analysis, sometimes intratextual, sometimes psychoanalytic, of the two metaphors, which places it in the context of family relationships and illness. Indeed, the barometric figure triggers a whole series of imaginary mechanisms which refer to the sensitivity and the constitutive versatility of the Search on the one hand, and to the writing itself on the other hand, but above all root this image in a complex game of identity tensions.

This article analyses the transformative infl uence of Marcel Proust’s fi ction on early works of Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz (1925–1927) in the light of the short story Nowa miłość [A New Love]. The article argues – on the basis of a reconstruction of the order in which Iwaszkiewicz read the volumes of In Search of Lost Time – that the date of its composition has be to revised and proceeds to explore the affi nity between the two writers. The analyses, which draw on Harold Bloom’s infl uence theory, compare and contrast their handling of scenes and narratives, relations of analogy and visions of love. The article claims that Iwaszkiewicz was keen to enter into dialogue with the French author and adopted some of Proust’s techniques, yet without compromising his own creative autonomy. In the course of that dialogue he developed a notion of Proust’s literary art which, it is argued, provides the key to the interpretation of homoeroticism and narcissism in Nowa miłość.

Taking up Antoine Compagnon’s thesis, according to which Sodom and Gomorrah constitutes a privileged place to look at the whole Proustian cycle, the article focuses on the social dimension of the novel, as well as on cruelty. In this context, the image of Jews and servants, and the role of the baron de Charlus are studied in particular. For the author also discusses the vision of love, especially homosexual, to show how Proust’s approach stems from sadism and masochism.

Artykuł w pierwszej części pokazuje wielkie ambicje rodu Mniszchów (umocnione wyniesieniem Maryny Mniszech do godności carycy), widoczne w programach architektonicznych i wyposażeniu wnętrz kolejnych rezydencji rodu. Druga część poświęcona jest wątkowi wielmożności w biografii i publikacjach marszałka wielkiego koronnego Michała Mniszcha (XVIII wiek). W części trzeciej omówiono niektóre echa świetności tego polskiego rodu magnackiego w twórczości i korespondencji pisarzy francuskich, Balzaka i Prousta. Zakończenie dotyczy podobnych motywów w twórczości i korespondencji Rainera Marii Rilkego oraz Maryny Cwietajewej, która otrzymała takie imię na cześć owej pochodzącej z polskiego rodu carycy.
The first part of the article shows the great ambitions of the Mniszech family (strengthened by the elevation of Maryna Mniszech to the dignity of the Tsarina), visible in the architectural programs and interior furnishings of the subsequent family residences. The second part is devoted to the thread of greatness in the biography and publications of the Grand Marshal of the Crown, Michał Mniszech (18th century). The third part discusses some echoes of the greatness of this Polish magnate family in the work and correspondence of the French writers Balzac and Proust. The ending concerns similar themes in the works and correspondence of Rainer Maria Rilke and Marina Tsvetaeva, who received her first name in honor of the said tsarina from the Polish family.

The motif of death and the maiden, so popular in literature and painting, is referred to directly in Samuel Beckett’s All that Fall, when Franz Schubert’s piece of music, under such a title, is heard at the end of this radio drama. When discussing the vision of human existence, as consistently presented in this great Irishman’s oeuvre, it is advisable to become acquainted with the basic concepts of Martin Heidegger’s philosophy, and also with Beckett’s essay Proust in which he discusses human life, characterised by suffering as “the expiation for the eternal sin of having been born.” This article discusses death in the Beckettland of suffering. Death hardly ever comes to young characters, the majority of Beckett’s characters being either old or, at least, middle-aged, are all still longing for their end to come. Despite finding different kinds of pastimes to make their waiting less oppressive, time seems to be, as it were, at a standstill, and, to use Vladimir’s words from Waiting for Godot, they “have time to grow old.”
Motyw śmierci i dziewczyny, popularny w literaturze i malarstwie, pojawia się w sztuce radiowej Samuela Becketta Którzy upadają, na końcu której słychać utwór Franza Szuberta pod takim tytułem. Kiedy przystępuje się do analizy krytycznej dotyczącej twórczości wielkiego Noblisty, warto jest zapoznać się z filozofią Heideggera oraz esejem Becketta analizującym powieść Prousta W poszukiwaniu utraconego czasu. W rozprawie o Proustcie dramaturg przedstawia swoją koncepcję ludzkiej egzystencji, która jest cierpieniem jako odkupieniem „za wieczny grzech narodzin.” Artykuł zajmuje się przedstawieniem śmierci w twórczości Irlandczyka. W jego utworach śmierć rzadko przychodzi do postaci młodych, ale również jest długo oczekiwana przez bohaterów w wieku średnim albo nawet starszych, którzy nie mogą się jej doczekać. Mimo że stosują oni różne sposoby na skrócenie oczekiwania na kres swego życia, co wydaje się zmniejszać ich cierpienie, odnoszą wrażenie, że czas zatrzymał się, co stwierdza swoją wypowiedzią Vladimir w Czekając na Godota: „Mamy czas, aby się zestarzeć.”

Jan Błoński and the criticism of consciousnessThe research Błoński and Criticism of Consciousness (in the field of Polish literary research ‘thematic criticism’) considers the presence of this particular French tradition, very important to Błoński, in terms of his critical approach and conceptions and in his very critical practise. Błoński was the translator and the editor of the selection of philosophical-critical texts of Gaston Bachelard and George Poulet (i.a.). Especially the last one made a significant impact on critical imagination of the Polish literary scholar. The author of this essay collating the theses from Błoński’s book on Proust and excerpts from his translations from Poulet’s Time, shows the resemblance of the „thematic” presumptions, arguments and conclusions, that both critics apply to the work of Proust.

The translation of La Bible d’Amiens and Sesame et les Lys was a way for Proust to take an interest in religious art, but also to cultivate his own vision of art. Ruskin was for Proust a guide who participated in the support of his artistic self by transfering a certain number of aesthetic conceptions to which his mind would never have been able to access on its own. Proust succeeds in recognizing the decisive dimension of the Christian religion and its implications for Ruskin's aesthetics. Transcending the religious dimension, Proust realizes that Christian architecture, as understood by Ruskin, acquires a meaning other than religious, namely that of a past sublimated by the powers of art. Thus the historical dimension is annihilated in favor of an aesthetic perception of works from the past. Our article therefore aims to show how this experience of translation allowed Proust to deconstruct the aesthetic vision of the author of the translated text, while constructing a vision of art that is his own.

The article concerns the reception of Marcel Proust’s novels by Anna Iwaszkiewiczowa (1897–1979) — an excellent expert in literature, music and painting, polyglot, erudite, humanist with a predilection for the exact sciences. She was the first translator of, In Search of Lost Time into Polish; the excerpts she translated testify not only to her outstanding talents at translation, but also to her reading insight and a kind of closeness to Proust’s writing and thought. Iwaszkiewiczowa also translated important critical articles by foreign authors to familiarize Polish readers with European proustological discussions. In addition, she devoted a lot of attention to the French author in her private journals, but above all, she creates her own, inspiring interpretations of Proust’s work in literary essays. The juxtaposition of the writings of Marcel Proust and Joseph Conrad turns out to be particularly interesting and fresh, though surprising at first. This article analyzes these texts, presenting them in the context of contemporary aesthetic, philosophical and even physical concepts (including Witkacy’s “pure form”, Rudolf Otto’s “numinosum”, Hermann Minkowski’s “space-time”), to which Iwaszkiewiczowa referred directly or indirectly. Parallel reading of both types of her considerations — those scattered in dailies, where she noted private impressions, as well as those announced in the form of carefully prepared articles — brings an interesting and unique image of Proust and of Iwaszkiewicz herself. The article is an attempt to give the floor to Anna Iwaszkiewicz, who is commonly perceived as the wife of a well-known writer. The author of the article argues that the figure and creative output of Anna Iwaszkiewiczowa are worth careful reading and research analysis, and above all, a reminder.

In his novel cycle Á la recherche du temps perdu (1913-1927), Marcel Proust takes up a long-lasting process of psychological analysis carried on in the first person. This person represents, in a way, human nature and the reader's thought as well. Therefore, it seems that the question of national stereotypes should not have found its place in this kind of work, in which the fundamental psychological project did not allow the author to caricature national particularisms. Yet, they do find their incarnations in the whole series of characters (Poznań archives enable us to show even the hidden source of one of them) in order to subject this stereotypical vision to analysis and more profound criticism. What is peculiar, however, is that in the final analysis, prejudices against foreign nations are positively re-assessed because they help to understand the nature of the novelist's vision and literary activity.

Szymański rozważa w swoim eseju, co łączy powieść Marcela Prousta W poszukiwaniu straconego czasu oraz film Andrieja Tarkowskiego Zwierciadło, a co pozwala uznać oba te arcydzieła za Deleuzjańskie co innego, a przecież jedno i to samo. Podstawowym impulsem twórczym było dla Prousta i Tarkowskiego podjęcie trudu konfrontacji z problemem czasowości i przemijania. Pamięci i swoich dzieł używali oni jako środków do odzyskania czasu utraconego. Akt przypominania nie był jednak celem samym w sobie – wspomnienia i wrażenia miały służyć odkrywaniu prawdy o świecie i o „ja”. Rezultatem egzystencjalnego i artystycznego wysiłku odzyskiwania przeszłości było więc rozpoznanie prawdziwego, pozaczasowego „ja” oraz umiejętność jego twórczego wyrażenia (tym samym „przypominać sobie” znaczyło: „tworzyć”). Dzieła życia Prousta i Tarkowskiego – uwierzytelnione autentyzmem doświadczenia twórców – mają być też wzorem „drogi zbawienia”, „świecką ewangelią” dla czytelników i widzów.
Szymański considers in his essay what connects Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time and Andrei Tarkovsky’s The Mirror, and what allows one to consider these masterpieces to be Deleuzian something else, and yet one and the same. The primary creative impulse for Proust and Tarkovsky was the need to tackle the problem of temporality and transience. They used memory and their works of art in order to recover the time lost. The act of remembering was not an end in itself – memories and impressions were supposed to aid discovering the truth about the world and “ego”. The result of the existential and artistic effort to recover the past was the discovery of true and timeless “ego” and the ability of its creative expression (where “remembering” also meant “creating”). The works of Proust and Tarkovsky, made authentic by the experience of their creators, are to be “a way of salvation”, and a “secular gospel” for readers and viewers.

Artykuł poświęcony jest analizie eseju francuskiego współczesnego pisarza, Philippe’a Sollersa, stanowiącego komentarz do rysunków Marcela Prousta pochodzących z jego prywatnej korespondencji oraz z manuskryptów. Wychodząc od zapożyczonej przez Sollersa od Georges’a Bataille’a idei „doświadczenia wewnętrznego”, poddana zostaje dyskusji idealistyczna interpretacja proustowskiego spojrzenia wyrażająca się w metaforze książki-narzędzia optycznego. This article analyzes an essay by the contemporary French writer Philippe Sollers in which Sollers analyzes Marcel Proust’s drawings found in the French writer’s private letters and manuscripts. I draw on Sollers’s notion of “inner experience,” which he, in turn, borrowed from Georges Bataille, and discuss the idealistic interpretations of Proust’s eye/gaze as found in the metaphor of the book as an “optic instrument.” Then, referring to the Derridean category of “the specter,” I analyze the significance of Proust’s drawings for the understanding of his legacy in contemporary literature.
