Opis:
Maritime transportation is the essence of international economy. Today, around ninety percent of world trade happens by maritime transportation via 50,000 merchant ships. These ships transport various types of cargo and manned by over a million mariners around the world. Majority of these ships are propelled by marine diesel engines, hereafter referred to as main engine, due to its reliability and fuel efficiency. Yet numerous accidents take place due to failure of main engine at sea, the main cause of this being inappropriate maintenance plan. To arrive at an optimal maintenance plan, it is necessary to assess the reliability of the main engine. At present the main engine on board vessels have a Planned Maintenance System (PMS), designed by the ship management companies, considering, advise of the engine manufacturers and/or ship’s chief engineers and masters. Following PMS amounts to carrying out maintenance of a main engine components at specified running hours, without taking into consideration the assessment of the health of the component/s in question. Furthermore, shipping companies have a limited technical ability to record the data properly and use them effectively. In this study, relevant data collected from various sources are analysed to identify the most appropriate failure model representing specific component. The data collected, and model developed will be very useful to assess the reliability of the marine engines and to plan the maintenance activities on-board the ship. This could lead to a decrease in the failure of marine engine, ultimately contributing to the reduction of accidents in the shipping industry.

Opis:
The article proposes valuating the operation of an arbitrary diesel engine, based on the sample case of a ship’s main engine in which energy conversion processes take place in a given time. The above operation is understood as the energy transfer to the screw propeller in the given time in which the energy conversion into work and/or heat and its further transmission take place. The here proposed method for evaluating the operation of the main engines installed in marine power plants consists in comparing the operation of these engines to a physical quantity the measuring unit of which is the joule-second (joule×second). A new term is introduced which bears the name of the theoretical engine operation and is the standard (ideal) operation which can be compared to the operation of real engines revealing different levels of wear. It was shown that the calculations of the theoretical operation defined in the above way cannot make direct use of commonly known theoretical Diesel and Sabathe cycles. Instead they should use the cycles modified by heat abstraction taking place in accordance with the isobaric, or isothermal process. Other new terms introduced in the article are: the degree of excellence of energy conversion to work, considered as the measure of excellence of engine operation, and the degree of engine operation dissipation, being the measure of its real operation. It is shown that if in time t of engine operation the case takes place that: Li = idem and Le = idem, then the engine operation dissipation is equal to its mechanical efficiency.

Safe operation of a merchant vessel is dependent on the reliability of the vessel’s main propulsion engine. Reliability of the main propulsion engine is interdependent on the reliability of several subsystems including lubricating oil system, fuel oil system, cooling water system and scavenge air system. Turbochargers form part of the scavenge sub system and play a vital role in the operation of the main engine. Failure of turbochargers can lead to disastrous consequences and immobilisation of the main engine. Hence due consideration need to be given to the reliability assessment of the scavenge system while assessing the reliability of the main engine. This paper presents integration of Markov model (for constant failure components) and Weibull failure model (for wearing out components) to estimate the reliability of the main propulsion engine. This integrated model will provide more realistic and practical analysis. It will serve as a useful tool to estimate the reliability of the vessel’s main propulsion engine and make efficient and effective maintenance decisions. A case study of turbocharger failure and its impact on the main engine is also discussed.

Opis:
The main engine of the ship is a complex technical object, which provides propulsion of the screw and ensures the safety of a ship at sea. It consists of a number of control systems such as lube oil temperature control, temperature control of the cooling water, fuel viscosity control or adjustable speed control of the main engine. Each of the main propulsion control system affects the safety of the ship. Continuous automation systems are built with standard transducer of measured quantity, the controller and actuator. The actuator is responsible for the direct setting of the size of the control object. The actuator is connected to the control valve and the actuator position change translates into a change in the flow rate of the working medium. Thus, the operating element is required to operate in the linear characteristics of the standard signal range. From the other hand, the control valve provides flow characteristics linear or of equal percentage. This control principle of medium flow is used in various control systems. The actuator of the control valve is always equipped with a positioner, which corrects errors in the position of the valve relative to the input signal. The presented design of the motorized valve is an analog system. Using the technique of converting multiple digital signal causes the system complexity and predisposition to damage. Eliminating the intermediate elements can improve the quality control and system safety. Then it is beneficial to have a design of the operating element based on the direct digital processing unit. The aim of paper has been to present design of the valve actuator, which completely abandons the digital-to-analogue convertor. The new design should increase the level of security of the system and quality control. The design layout is presented in the article. The new actuator is on-off valves, which control, directly from the digital bits, the form of the output signal. The control signal may use the control algorithms to be used or developed individually to the actuator design.

Opis:
The paper presents possibility of applying the theory of semi-Markov processes for probabilistic description of load spectrum for diesel engines employed for ship propulsion, so for main engines. The considerations include output power characteristics for this kind of engines. The characteristics have enabled formulating a four-member set of states of the process of load on the engines. The theory of semi-Markov processes has been applied for describing the real process of loads on the mentioned engines. This theory has made possible building a model of the engine loads in form of a continuous-time semi-Markov process with a four-state set of values. Properties of a Darboux continuous function, which allow considering the engine loads as the discrete-states and continuous-time processes, have been used to build the model. In consequence a limiting distribution of the occurring process of successive states of engine loads could be determined. The distribution is the probabilities of staying a sea-going ship main engine in successive states of load. The distribution is characterized by the spectrum of loads on this kind of engines. The presented model can be developed by taking into account many states of the process of main engines loading as the need is to make such a probabilistic description of the process that provides possibility of rational control of the operating process.

The article discusses the results of actions performed by marine engine manufacturers towards the reduction of emission of harmful substances in the exhaust gas from these engines. The discussion is limited to main engines produced by MAN B&W. A model is proposed to describe the process of emission of harmful substances from Diesel engines based on the semi-Markov process, discrete in states and continuous in the operating time. The states of this process are: engine ability state (s1) and engine inability state (s2). A method to calculate probabilities P1 and P2 of the appearance of states s1 and s2 is proposed. State s1 is interpreted as corresponding to the inequality ekek(dop), where ek represents the mass of harmful substances emitted by the engine during its operation and ek(dop) is the maximum mass of emission of these substances permitted by relevant regulations.

The power of main engine must be determined in such a way to let the seagoing ship reaches the predicted, in the agreement with the ship owner, service speed. Significant influence on the main engine power, apart from the ship 's speed, has a geometry shape and the dimensions of the ship's hull. Begins from the general form of Admiralition's equation, it is essential to establish the specific quantity parameter for the estimation of main engine power. That parameter can be described by the displacement, DWT, LBT, TEU number, the 14 tons TEU number etc. depends on the type of the seagoing vessel. The estimation of the specified maximum continuous rating SMCR based on the quantity parameter can be practicable in the preliminary design stage because of the small number of the known design data and the importance of the design decisions made at that level. The characteristic quantity parameter to establish the main engine power of the seagoing ship has been determined using the data of the contemporary container ships in operation. The research has been done in the whole range of the container capacity in TEU, where the combustion, reciprocation engines are used to propel the seagoing vessels. The statistical and regression tools have been utilized in the data analysis process to determine the quantity parameter.

This article presents the influence of various ship’s operational conditions occurring during manoeuvres related to entering and leaving the ports and mooring operations. Frequent starts and stops of the ship’s propulsion unit are then required, which affect the variability of the energetic loads of the ship’s power plant, causing accelerated, non-design wear of the ship’s main propulsion engine. The effects of cold start-ups of the main ship engine are the subject of this study. Conditions of the engine inlet valve damage process are discussed. The physics of the degradation process leading to air inlet valve damage was considered. Laboratory tests of structure continuity and their results are discussed, and the valve material defects were excluded as the cause of the damage. The causes of repeated damage to the inlet air valves were identified. The effectiveness of the performed corrective measures was confirmed by a documented control test of the engine start-up. The article is a utilitarian premise for the requirements of the Classification Society.

The article refers to results and conclusions on post-emergency repairs of a turbo-charging system of a DEUTZ engine of the SBV 8M 628 type of 1715 kW – the main power unit of a cement carrier. The failure of the turbocharger led to severing of a part of the exhaust outlet valve head. In order to determine the cause of the turbocharger fault, parametric identification of the reference state of the turbocharging system interacting with the ship main power engine has been carried out. The post-emergency servicing of the turbocharger comprised mounting a new blade rim of expansive instruments of smaller capacity than the so far used. Control measurement results of the power system after the replacement of the turbocharger turbine nozzle have been presented. Limitations of correct engine operation have been noted in the range of maximum load with continuous power (MCR). A range of corrective maintenance servicing of fuel equipment has been presented. Using the values of measured torque at the propeller shaft, incorrect interaction between the shaft and the main engine has been noted. A new propeller, adequate to the design operational parameters of the engine characteristics, has been chosen and mounted. The correctness of turbine expansive instrument replacement has been verified by correct interaction between the elements of the power system: propeller – main engine – turbocharging system. Thus, a wider range of economically acceptable ship operation has been obtained.

This article aims to compile, describe and compare three different models taken from the literature describing the causes of explosions in the crankcases of marine engines. Each of the models has a different level of detail and was prepared with a different purpose. However, the same process, explosions in crankcases, was analyzed in all cases. A statistical evaluation of the frequency of events leading to explosions, a model built using failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and a model based on fault tree analysis (FTA) are described in turn. The FTA model drawn from the literature formed the basis for further analysis. Values of important measures of all elementary events of the fault tree were calculated using the Birnbaum reliability measure, Vesely-Fussell measure, Birnbaum structural measure, criticality measure and improvement potential. The percentage importance values of all events determined using these importance measures were compared. The results obtained from the application of each model were evaluated. The results of the models were compared with each other, and an approach using all three models supplemented with diversion analysis was proposed.

Effective and efficient maintenance is essential to ensure reliability of a ship's main propulsion system, which in turn is interdependent on the reliability of a number of associated sub- systems. A primary step in evaluating the reliability of the ship's propulsion system will be to evaluate the reliability of each of the sub- system. This paper discusses the methodology adopted to quantify reliability of one of the vital sub-system viz. the lubricating oil system, and development of a model, based on Markov analysis thereof. Having developed the model, means to improve reliability of the system should be considered. The cost of the incremental reliability should be measured to evaluate cost benefits. A maintenance plan can then be devised to achieve the higher level of reliability. Similar approach could be considered to evaluate the reliability of all other sub-systems. This will finally lead to development of a model to evaluate and improve the reliability of the main propulsion system.

Opis:
Permanent growth of the container shipbuilding has led to the need of research - developing activities with references to design and ship building process. The requirements for the container vessels have been modified and changed compared with the ships built in the eighties of the past century. The ships capacity have been increased up to and even above 10 000 twenty feet containers (TEU) with the service speed above 25 knots. For such a giant sea going vessels with the overall length above 300 meters and draught above 10 meters the ship hull resistance characteristics have been modified. Those conditions bring to the situation where the propulsion power for the seagoing ships reached 80 MW. The estimation of the main engine power relation in the preliminary design stage is the main aim of the paper. The problem is such important as in that stage the most important design decisions with relatively low investment costs are determined. Moreover, the preliminary design stage distinguishes that the designer possesses just a few design parameters given by the ship owner of the future vessel. That is why the correct choice of the main engine power is difficult to determine. Determination of the main propulsion power impacts the electric and heat energy amount and the production way of both energy forms. The main engine equation has been determined based on the container ship's parameters for the entire range of container vessels load capacity (TEU). The values of the design parameters have came from author 's data base for the contemporary container vessels.

One such factor herein proposed is the exoergic efficiency. The method for the determination of this factor for the main engine is presented. In the subject-matter literature detail data on stiffness of the crankshaft foundation connected with the frame of marine main engine are still lacking. Thermal deformation models of the engine’s casing, proposed by engine producers, are excessively simplified. However the parameters are crucial for the shaft-line alignment analysis as well as for the analysis of interactions between the shaft-line and engine crankshaft, especially in the case of high power engines. This paper presents a determination method of the marine engine body characteristics as well as results of example computations performed for a Sulzer 7 RTA 84 C engine installed on a ~3000 TEU container ship. It has been demonstrated that the producer’s assumption about parallel displacement of the crankshaft axis in thermal working conditions is too rough. The thermal deformation of the engine is of hogging character, which results in significant change of the moment load exerted on the crankshaft and shaft line. The stiffness parameters recommended by the producers for the shaft-line alignment are estimated correctly, however they represent only engine’s body flexibility, without taking into account ship’s hull flexibility.
