The harpsichord Italian music repertoire at the turn of the 16th and 17th century. The aim of this text is to present the basic issues of the harpsichord performance practice of the Italian music at the turn of the 16th and 17th century. The article contains a lot of advice on how to study a piece of music, starting with research of source materials, instruments, aspects of compositions and performance practice, including issues of musical expression and ornamentation. The article also provides compendious information about the repertoire of the discussed music, its authors, musical forms and types.

This article develops a three-part argument with respect to the ongoing discussion in Germany whether the Digital revolution has been led to an extension or a dissolution or another change of the notion of music. The first part defines the original notion of New Music by four distinctions in respect to classical music, other arts, popular music and life-world experiences. The second part describes how and why these initial boundaries have been crossed in New Music’s history. The third part contends that the possibility to pass these borderlines does not result in an extended notion nor a dissolved notion of music but in a reflexive notion of art music.

„…to help the organists” – Fiori musicali by Girolam Frescobaldi. The subject of the article is the famous collection of organ pieces of Girolam Frescobaldi, entitled Fiori musicali, which since its publication in 1635 has been continuously generating great interest of musicians and listeners. The text presents a wide context of this work’s creation and focuses on the composer’s original concept, which was obliterated as a result of the Second Vatican Council reforms. The reforms removed the music created for the purpose of The Roman Rite from the liturgy and now such music mainly serves the concert and pedagogical purposes. Frescobaldi’s intentions become clear thanks to the confrontation of the content of Musical flowers with the regulations from the times before the Second Vatican Council governing the use of organs during liturgy. The preface, written by the composer himself, quoted in full, is also the source of valuable information, as well as his intriguing comments to several pieces in the collection discussed in the article. In spite of all that, there are many questions that still remain unanswered, which opens the way to further speculations and interpretations.

François Bayle’s theoretical and technological experiments in the perception and nature of sound went hand in hand with incredibly profound and syste- matic work. He composed over 100 works – many of them (such as his renow- ned series entitled L’Expérience Acoustique 1969–1972; Son Vitesse-Lumière, 1980–1983) are oft en mentioned in the same breath as Ferrari’s Presque Rien, Parmegani’s De Natura Sonorum, Xenakis’s Concret PH, and Henry’s Le Voy- age. His work epitomizes the modernist quest for the new in the world of sound, from musique concrète, through electroacoustics, acousmatics and octophony which examine the relation between sound and space, to the theory of the nature and perception of sound, which explores the notion of time in music (light speed sound, images-of-sound).

In the circle of religious music and oratorios of a great Pole and a patriot – Feliks Nowowiejski. Feliks Nowowiejski is one of the most outstanding representatives of the Polish religious music of the first half of the twentieth century. Extensive achievements of the composer in this respect include both liturgical and non-liturgical works, pieces inspired by religious themes, from simple devotional songs, multi-vocal, vocal-instrumental and organ compositions. Great impact on Nowowiejski’s religious works came from his family home as well as from attending church educational institutions – the Music School in Święta Lipka and the School of Church Music in Ratisbon. The most important and most widely known religious works by Nowowiejski are oratorios (including Quo vadis, The Discovery of the Holy Cross), masses (including Missa pro pace, Missa Stella Maris), symphonies and concerts for solo organ, numerous choral and solo songs, psalms, hymns and motets. This paper synthetically characterizes religious works by Nowowiejski, taking into account the historical volume of the works, the characteristic elements of composer’s skills as well as their presence in Polish culture.

It seems that in the face of the current situation of Polish Church, in the context of social and political transformations and all the years following the ending aggiornamento of the II Vatican Council, and while observing the decline of “dominicantes”, it is high time we dealt with the spiritual formation of those who greatly contribute to the creation of liturgy at our churches. Such a formation is a necessity of the present time! It is our pastoral duty, which we have to carry out by the force of holy orders as priests or bishops. It also seems it is the natural consequence of the Church life, the most important work of which has been deepening the faith of Christ’s followers and leading them to salvation, as The Catechism of The Catholic Church teaches us (cf. Mt 28, 19–20; The Catechism… – Preface). There are many people who cooperate with us at parishes. It is thus important not to treat all of these organized groups, their members and organists in an instrumental way. We should avoid noticing them and their work only then when we need them for our liturgical celebrations, to forget them afterwards. We should make a continuous effort to form their spirituality. Only then will their participation in liturgy be fruitful and complete so they could, through singing, organ playing, but also through their conduct, give the testimony of their strengthened faith. Clergymen need retreat and meditation, so as to more explicitly preach Jesus, but secular Catholics, our associates need them as well. Let us appreciate the possibility of influencing believers, helping them in deepening their faith, all done by good and valuable music. Let us avoid ignoring this charisma which has been given to us. Another, perhaps still little valued, possibility of pastoral influencing believers is good liturgical music, or church music in general. We can preach the mystery of faith through sounds. What we need the is to learn how to treat music in liturgy seriously. Not as a complementary element of silent moments of celebration, but as an integral part of it. Music can help us raise our hearts towards God, it can teach faith, bolster up hope, teach the spiritual way of everyday life. Liturgical music is then the pastoral way of Church doings. To sum up, it is worth to cite the words of Pope Benedict XVI: I encourage all shepherds to do their best so as to emanate with authentic Eucharistic Christian spirituality. The care for music and musicians should be the pastoral care of the Church.

The author presents the figure of Aleksander Zatajewicz (1869–1936), famous Russian/Soviet ethnographer and composer. Zatajewicz was of Polish descent, in years 1904–1915 he worked in Warsaw. He became a part of history of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, as he was the first to take on the challenge to collect the Kazakh and Kyrgyz melodies and folk songs and to write them down in notation. Zatajewicz zeal in this difficult task can be best illustrated by numbers. In 16 years (1920–1936) he has collected and written down 2 600 melodies and folk songs from Central Asia, Altai and Siberia, and affixed them with his own commentaries. His work is recognized and respected in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan even today
Autorka przybliża postać Aleksandra Zatajewicza (1869–1936), słynnego rosyjskiego/radzieckiego etnografa i kompozytora. Zatajewicz miał polskie korzenie, a w latach 1904–1915 pracował w Warszawie. Bohater artykułu zapisał się w historii Kazachstanu i Kirgistanu, gdyż jako pierwszy podjął się wyzwania zebrania i zapisania w nutach kazachskich oraz kirgiskich melodii oraz pieśni ludowych. Gorliwość Zatajewicza w tym trudnym zadaniu obrazują liczby. Przez 16 lat swojej działalności (do 1920 do 1936 r.) zebrał i zapisał 2 600 melodii i pieśni narodów Azji Środkowej, Ałtaju i Syberii, opatrzywszy je własnym komentarzem. Jego działalność do dziś cieszy się uznaniem w Kazachstanie oraz Kirgistanie.
