    Opis:
    The article provides an analysis of trends and approaches to researching foreign language learning problems, social and psychological adaptation, and the integration of migrant children in the multiethnic educational institutions of Russia. Showing new actual directions of scientific research: methodology of elementary education in foreign language of middle-school and older migrant children, learning, emotional expression of migrant children and development of their emotional intelligence. It indicates other necessary areas of international research and development in migrant children, a stable identification with the host country, and support for the psychological feeling of security to counter involvement in terrorism.

    Opis:
    Migrations of women lead to changes in identity, which is subject to constant construction and verification. This text shows the problem of foreign labour migration of women living in the region of Opole. The main idea of the paper is to show the changes that lead to the redefinition of the identity of the migrants, and the transformations of their axiological systems as a consequence of their stay abroad. Each woman contributes to the culture of the foreign country by the fact of her being a foreigner. At the same time, through adaptation processes, each woman internalizes the values representative of the country to which she migrated. The analysis presented in the article draws upon the interviews held in 2007 and 2008 with the women who migrated from the region of Opole in search of labour. Also analysed are their diaries, which are a rich reservoir of their experiences, feelings and reflections. Finally, the analysis also relies on multidimensional quantitative research. The research reveals that some women, even though they stay in the foreign country for short, try their best to assimilate with the new social environment. They seem to ignore the cost of such an assimilation - that is the loss of what was important to them prior to migration, as regards patterns of their behaviour and traditions of their motherland. At the same time, finding an efficient mode of living among others enables building effective social relationships. Women are not always loyal to their husbands, and the reasons for their cheating on the spouses are various. Their stay abroad helps women feel more self-reliant, independent, self-confident and open to contacts with others.

    Opis:
    Researching migrants' social identity is considered by the author as a technically and organizationally complicated undertaking, but foremost as a significant intellectual challenge in both the theoretical and methodological dimensions. The article presents and discusses a number of recommendations concerning engagement in such research. The most important include: grounding the research in middle-range theories; moving beyond methodological nationalism; taking an interdisciplinary approach and a historical and processual perspective; resorting to fieldwork, which flexibly employs so-called soft research techniąues, including observation, which requires a longer stay in the field; applying grounding and triangulation procedures in the process of collecting empirical data.

    Opis:
    Gazeta Polska w Berlinie was launched at the end of the 19th century, a time when the Polish migrant community in Berlin became sufficiently strong to be able to support its own newspaper. Published between 1890 and 1897, its aim was to keep alive and foster the migrants’ Polish identity and to report on current events in Poland and worldwide. Although the Gazeta Polska w Berlinie cultivated a decidedly patriotic tone, it was not very popular with its target audience. As a result it never got out of financial straits and eventually had to close in 1897.

    This paper addresses the issue of language and belonging in the transnational context of migration. It draws on two research projects with first-generation children of Polish labour migrants in Scotland. The paper examines the role that language plays in fostering multiple ways of being and belonging, and in understanding how children make sense of their identity. It suggests that language should take a more central place in debates about cultural connectivity and transnational migration. Findings point to the need for a more holistic approach to supporting migrant children, including the explicit recognition of family cultural and language capital in the host society.

    In this essay I will examine the characteristics of narrative strategy used by Nigerian writer and activist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie in her novel „Americanah” with special reference to Igbo language. The paper provides examples of several expressions in Igbo taken from the novel such as phrases, sentences, proverbs and other lexical items. Using the concept of the migrant identity for my analysis I argue that her narrative strategy including certain Igbo context as base for recognition could be interpreted as the method of manifestation of different self-identifications, global identities and a dynamic sense of belonging from a perspective of Nigerian writer living in the United States.

    The author undertakes an effort to answer the question whether the observable, contemporary migrant movements – excluding coerced migration – is a specific trend in order to be labeled contemporary wanderers i.e. digital nomads. Further, she speculates upon the question of identity in flux (the process of emancipation and settlement), and in her description, she employs the ideas of ‘foraging’ and ‘dispersal’. The presented deliberations lead to an inevitable new identity model of ‘world citizen’.
    Autorka podejmuje próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy współcześnie obserwowalne ruchy migracyjne poza migracją „przymusową” nie stanowią swoistej mody na przyjęcie statusu współczesnego wędrowcy (cyfrowego nomady). W dalszej kolejności spekuluje nad kwestią tożsamości „w ruchu” (proces emancypacji, zakorzenienia) i w jej opisie posługuje się figurą „zbieractwa” i „rozproszenia”. Przedstawione rozważania pozwalają na konkluzję o nieuchronności nowego modelu „obywatela świata”.
    Die Autorin unternimmt den Versuch, eine Antwort auf die Frage zu finden, ob die derzeit zu beobachtenden Migrationsbewegungen mit Ausnahme der „Zwangsmigration“ eine gewisse Mode für die Annahme des Status eines modernen Wanderers (digitalen Nomaden) darstellen. Im Weiteren spekuliert sie über die Frage der Identität „in Bewegung“ (Emanzipationsprozess, Verwurzelung). In ihre  Beschreibung bedient sie sich der Figuren „Sammlertum“ und „Zerstreuung“. Diese Überlegungen lassen als Konklusion den Bedarfnach einem neuen Modell des „Weltbürgers“ zu.

    The purpose of this paper is to explore adult migrants’ learning in light of their life experiences and transitions, drawing from the narratives of two migrant learners who attended ‘Odysseus’ solidarity school in Greece. The presented research harnesses the biographical learning theory and adopts a Bakhtinian, dialogical way of presenting the data under three themes: wars and identity struggles, religious beliefs, migration and language learning in the host country. The findings revealed that adult migrants’ life experiences and transitions constitute a learning process, which enhances transformative learning of ‘being’, through a process of ‘perspective and identity struggles’. It is also found that the accumulated experiences and transitions as well as adult migrant learners’ previous educational capital are in constant relation to the way they experience language learning in the programme.
    Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zbadanie procesu uczenia się dorosłych migrantów w świetle ich życiowych doświadczeń i tranzycji, opierając się na narracji dwóch uczących się osób, które uczęszczały do szkoły solidarnościowej „Odysseus” w Grecji. W przedstawionych badaniach wykorzystano teorię uczenia się biograficznego, a także przyjęto bachtinowski, dialogiczny sposób prezentowania danych, w ramach trzech wątków: wojny i zmagania się z tożsamością, przekonań religijnych, migracji i nauki języka w kraju przyjmującym. Na podstawie wyników ustalono, że życiowe doświadczenia i tranzycje dorosłych migrantów stanowią proces uczenia się, który wzmacnia transformatywne uczenie się „bycia” poprzez proces „zmagań z perspektywą i tożsamością”. Stwierdzono również, że zgromadzone doświadczenia oraz tranzycje, a także wcześniejszy kapitał edukacyjny uczących się dorosłych migrantów, pozostają w stałym związku ze sposobem, w jaki doświadczają oni nauki języków w ramach programu.

    The qualitative study presented here was carried out in 2008 as a graduate diploma thesis in Psychology. It was aimed at examining Poles’ experience of living in the United States of America and two European countries, viz. Italy and the United Kingdom. The data consisted of online interviews with ten Poles: 4 from the US, 3 from Italy, and 3 in the UK. The sample was made up of nine females and one male living in the countries in question between 4 months and 17 years (age range 23–36) who had moved from Poland for reasons other than purely economic and, unlike subjects of similar studies on Polish migrants, were also able to speak the host language fluently. The analysis was carried out by means of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (Smith, 2003) that allowed to examine the participants’ individual experience of adapting to new social and cultural environments. The results were further analysed and discussed with reference to the relevant literature on the subject of individualistic and collectivist societies (Hofstede, 2001), acculturation (Berry, 2003) and migrants’ identities, as well as earlier studies carried out in the States (Boski, 1992) or in European countries (e.g. Kosic, 2006). The findings were that, regardless of gender and age, the interviewed Poles tended to express respect for the host culture and people and a strong level of identification with Poles in Poland.     Nadine Fresco in her research on exiled Holocaust survivors uses the term diaspora des cendres (1981) to depict the status of Jewish migrants whose lives are forever marked by their tragic experience as well as a conviction that “the[ir] place of origins has gone up in ashes” (Hirsch 243). As a result, Jewish migrants and their children have frequently resorted to storytelling treated as a means of transferring their memories, postmemories and their condition of exile from the destroyed Eastern Europe into the New World. Since “[l]iterature of Australians of Polish-Jewish descent holds a special place in Australian culture” (Kwapisz Williams 125), the aim of this paper is to look at selected texts by one of the greatest Jewish-Australian storytellers of our time: Arnold Zable and analyse them according to the paradigm of an exiled flâneur whose life concentrates on wandering the world, sitting in a Melbourne café, invoking afterimages of the lost homeland as well as positioning one’s status on a map of contemporary Jewish migrants. The analyses of Zable’s Jewels and Ashes (1991) and Cafe Scheherazade (2001) would locate Zable as a memoirist as well as his fi ctional characters within the Australian community of migrants who are immersed in discussing their un/belonging and up/rootedness. The analysis also comprises discussions on mapping the past within the context of the new territory and the value of storytelling.
